0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. The author Wells Brown is one of the greatest writers in American history By Larry Delano Coleman This 1867 history of blacks in the Civil War is the earliest written in the subject. While it, obviously, does not cover all 459 engagements in which black troops participated, it imparts a broad-based perspective of their most significant campaigns in vivid imagery and detail abstracted from official record of the war, newspaper accounts, letters, and other sources. The author Wells Brown is one of the greatest writers in American history, even though he is a largely self-educated, former slave from Missouri, whose reading rudiments were bestowed by Elijah P. Lovejoy, the abolitionist newspaper editor, who was killed for his "radical" views by Missouri slaveholders.
