It ended too soon, so I re-read it & I'll continue to re-read it. It's simply wonderful, like breathing fresh air after being underground for too long. It's delightfully insightful, and the prose, at times, truly moved me. Highly recommended!Highlights:HomageI went all Santiago once on asunfish that weighed nearly a pound long before I knew of Hemmingway the power of wordsthe pull of the waterI battled the monsteras only a nine-year old could; with every fiber of my being strained to matching tautness of six-pound-test line at the end of my bent, shiny balsawood pole with cork handleSummers at Horseshoe Lakewere the defining milieu of my life where the rest-of-the-year city kid I was discovered the majesty of woods, water the adrenaline rush of a loon's call, the scent of pine, the calming sounds of wind through birch leaves and wood-framed window screensThe summer I was nineI went all Santiago on a sunfish weighing nearly a poundErnest would be proud.FrogsNow that I am all grown upit would be unseemly to play with frogsHad I known that fact in my youthful summers perhaps I wouldn't havegotten to know them so well.A Minnesota First LoveI was a good friend of her brother - he knows, but has never said a wordOn the rare occasions we still meet he smiles a knowledgeable, unbelieving, remembering grin and I always wonder, after all the years that have passed, just how much she has told him...or if he figured it all out on his own just watching her face during family dinner-table reminisces about those even warmer summers at the lake.Gated CommunitiesNever have I been further from my youth than when I returned to the scene of its places, people, things change time, people, lives elapseGoing home is ametaphor smorgasbord; abandoned cabin overgrown with woods, withered by age dirt roads now paved familiar sights still sturdy though showing some age roadside greasy spoons now trendily featuring salads locals speak of 'amenities'Places grow up, people change or vice versa; who can tell? The rustic poem stories of growing up in Minnesota drew fantastical pictures of a lake, sitting on the dock, and orange soda. I would highly recommend this book to anyone.
