About the Author Z. Z. Boone's fiction has appeared in many literary magazines, and his story "The Buddy System" was one of the Notables in The Best American Nonrequired Reading 2014. His film (written under the name Bill Bozzone) include Full Moon in Blue Water and The Last Elephant, and his produced plays (also written under the Bill Bozzone) include Rose Cottages, House Arrest, Korea, and Buck Fever. Mr. Boone lives with novelist Tricia Bauer and their daughter, and he teaches writing at Western Connecticut State University.

Like Finding Folding Money By Martin Rosen's kid brother I was going to begin with some cerebral and perhaps cleverly insightful bit of literary commentary, but then I decided to start with an expression of my gut-level, first impression of this collection of short stories, just to get it out of the way: Wow(!). I realize that’s not a sentiment or an expression one is likely to find among the pages of NORTH AMERICAN REVIEW, but I believe it is still a valid observation, and one worth repeating occasionally. In fact, I think I’ll go ahead and say it again. Wow. I love a good short story. Here, I love the whole bunch. They take me “Off Somewhere.”For a long time, I have maintained that there is a short list of things that some writers do that pushes their writing over the line between good writing and great writing. One of those things is this: I, the reader, am word surfing along, enjoying a perfectly good story, and suddenly—bang!—there’s this line that stops me, makes me re-read it (sometimes out loud), evokes a certain measure of envy in that I find myself wishing I had written it, and then, having had its way with me, launches me back aboard the story line express. It’s a wow-moment bonus; no extra charge. Something about the experience reminds me of finding folding money in a grocery store parking lot. We have all found our share of pennies or even the occasional dime or quarter. It’s nice. Whatever whim of the cosmos is responsible for such delightful little discoveries, I thank you. But…how often have you found a twenty? A fifty? A hundred dollar bill? In my life, I have found two twenties, one fifty, and one hundred dollar bill. In each case, I felt momentarily rich(!), and I can tell you exactly when and where each happened. One of the hallmarks of great writing is that the writer takes a perfectly good story and smoothly drops these “folding money” lines within the storytelling. I don’t know that that’s a teachable skill; I suspect that either you can do it or you can’t.OFF SOMEWHERE by ZZ Boone is a collection of REALLY good stories—stories so good that you want to share them with someone else just so that you can ask them later which ones they liked the most—but it’s more than that. Boone has that natural ability to take really good stories and make them memorable by planting those wonderful “folding money” lines within story after story in the collection. Here are a few of my favorites:“That girl wouldn’t know the truth if it stood up in her soup.”“…that suppressed lip-fart laugh that adolescent girls learn to master.”“I can feel myself unraveling like that rope you’ve seen in the adventure movies.”“…a brainy girl with a voice like the right side of a harmonica.”“It didn’t take skill. … A trained bear with a decent pair of walking shoes could do it.”“There are no outward threats—that would be unchristian—but there is disappointment and embarrassment, two major ingredients in the baking of the Catholic cake.”Wow. But you go find your own favorites. I promise you this: By the end of the collection you’ll be a much richer reader.

By Amazon Customer Tales of the mundane colliding with the macabre, doused with a liberal dose of the dark humor that provides the only prism through which one can stare reality in the face without crying. I'm sure that Eugene Ionesco, Jack Kerouac and the Marx Brothers would all have been fans. This book is way cool. Don't miss it!

ZZ Boone provides detailed and suprising snapshots into the fringes of contemporary American life. Highly recommended for anyone who loves short stories, or, simply, great writing.
