They were raised inseparable, twin baby girls cut from the same cloth of love and loyalty. But while their affections for each other only continue to grow, Allerton and Leah have begun to see the world through different sets of eyes.
In the contentious atmosphere of the post-segregation South, one is instilled with conventional attitudes of racial fear and distrust, while the other feels a sadness, a painful emptiness and longing she is unable to explain.
Unknown to them, these conflicting feelings may trace back to a dark and tragic past—the carefully hidden event that originally brought the sisters together. Faced with the consequences of his secrecy, Allerton’s father finally shares some pieces of the puzzle, leaving his daughter guilt-ridden and in a desperate search for the truth.
As Allerton travels back to her true hometown of Marianna, Florida, she must come face-to-face with the reality behind their family history as she encounters a number of locals with various connections to the girls’ pasts: a young sheriff taken by Allerton’s beauty, a prisoner serving time for murder, and a congressman dealing with his share of personal demons.

"Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere" Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. By just my opinion It's evident that the author cares deeply about race relations. My favorite genre is historical fiction and I frequently find myself gravitating towards this period of time as it fascinates me that the atrocities that occurred then can both break your heart and inspire you at the same time. And this is what the author accomplished with her novel. Her depiction of the injustices and horrors that were inflicted on people solely because of the color of their skin left me near tears repeatedly. Then, the resolve and faith shown by many of the victims and victim's friends and families in the book brought me renewed hope in the goodness of human nature. That's why I would recommend this novel, especially now at a time when our Nation is currently facing entirely new, yet related, forms of hatred based on race/religion/ethnicity: It's the same wolf, just in an updated coat.I hear many people say that they feel the world is becoming such a horrible place and that there is more evil prevalent now than good. One needs only to look back in our history to see evil peaks and valleys and that righteousness does rally and overcome for the most part. Ms Vietor's book reminds of this. With that being said, it's important to note that this is a work of fiction and not a drudging history lesson. I found myself staying up much later than I had planned just to read "a few more pages". Some of the characters were better developed than others and you certainly came to hate some and adore a few. It was an easy, yet thought provoking read and I look forward to her next novel.

It is a deeply involved story about the days of segregation and eventual integration, focusing on both black and white families and their children. It is so well written that it has given me an education about those days of our American history. The Author has beautifully created all of the characters involved in this story so that I felt that I knew them, felt their happiness and their pain, their hopes and dreams, and their anger. I found I loved some of the characters and detested other ones. It's a story about love, a story about hatred, a story about murder, and yes, there is some sex in it. As I said, it holds your interest throughout.I highly recommend it.

The author used a lot of detail to describe the characters and events; I felt as if I were there. Also, the story seemed very real, as the characters dealt with issues of today, such as racial injustice, mental illness, and heartbreak. I enjoyed reading every page of this book, and highly recommend.
