As the Second World War wound down, five-year-old Jenny Lloyd began a new life with her parents and baby brother on a farm in a remote area of Cornwall. With no telephone, electricity or indoor plumbing, the family—who had been separated for much of the war—now spent days together, experiencing the hardships and delights of English existence in the mid-twentieth century. In a series of verbal snapshots, Jenny describes her youth in England in the 1940s and 50s—her memories of World War II, her life on the farm, and her experiences at boarding school. Written in vividly descriptive prose, her story provides a fascinating portrait of an unusual childhood and adolescence.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Couldn't put it down By Lara Beth An interesting and well written coming of age narrative. The narrator is a "good girl"—not prone to getting into trouble—but that does not make for dull reading. I read a lot of memoirs, but this was the first time in a long time that I got caught up in the story and didn't want to put it down at night.Lloyd uses a linear structure, mostly written in exposition, focusing heavily on the interior of the narrator but with vivid details. Her willingness to look at her own shortcomings keeps this from being sentimental. Lloyd was really able to make the time and place come alive for me, and she grew up very differently than I did. I particularly liked how she was able to describe hardship without bitterness—she didn't whitewash her childhood but also didn't dwell on the negative either.

A Real Gem of a Memoir, Not to Be Missed By Kiva Wyandotte In this book, Jenny Lloyd has made the transition from scholarly historian to successful memoir author as she recounts her childhood and shares a truly entertaining story of family and the culture of the times. Being neither British nor a child of the post war years, I still found In My Mind's Eye gentle, compelling and in depth... just the way I like my pleasure reading. Highly recommended!

I grew up on a farm By MCW Received this book as a Christmas presents and absolutely devoured it. Perfectly paced and engaging. The review on the back cover compared this work to a James Herriot book and it certainly did not disappoint. I grew up on a farm too and strongly related to her stories- the experiences are timeless.I sincerely hope there is a sequel!

Marmion is an epic poem by Walter Scott about the Battle of Flodden (1513). It was published in 1808. Scott started writing Marmion, his second major work, in November 1806. When Archibald Constable, the publisher, learnt of this, he offered a thousand guineas for the copyright unseen. William Miller and John Murray each agreed to take a 25% share in the project. Murray observed: "We both view it as honourable, profitable, and glorious to be concerned in the publication of a new poem by Walter Scott." Scott later said that he thoroughly enjoyed writing the work. He told his son-in-law, Lockhart, "Oh, man, I had many a grand gallop among these braes when I was thinking of Marmion." In 1807 Scott practised manoeuvres with the Light Horse Volunteers (formed to defend an invasion from France) in order to polish his description of Flodden. Marmion was finished on January 22 and published on 22 February 1808 in a quarto first edition of two thousand copies. This edition, priced one and a half guineas, sold out in a month. It was followed by twelve octavo editions between 1808 and 1825.

Marmion, by Walter Scott

About the Author Sir Walter Scott was a Scottish novelist, playwright and poet who earned worldwide celebrity for his writing in the early nineteenth century. Born and educated in Edinburgh, Scott s first literary success came when a childhood friend established a printing house and offered to publish his poetry. Despite earning some success as a poet, Scott decided to publish his first novel anonymously, and released Waverly in 1814. As The Author of Waverly, Scott went on to publish dozens of novels, short stories, and poems, including Ivanhoe, Rob Roy, and The Lady of the Lake. He died in 1832 at the age of 61.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Poetry from another time. By Donald H. Banks I bought the Kindle version of Marmion, a great story of the Battle of Flodden Field fought long ago in the year 1513. Easier to read than most poetry even with the British English. Walter Scott's Marmion (published in 1808) is filled with unrequited love, deceit and conspiracy, I recommend it for a great read.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Heavy Going By Brian Feit It's the tale of James IV battle against the English at Flodden Field told from the point of view of a miscreant knight, Baron Marmion. Though brave and bold he was, his poor behavior to women is not up to the standards of chivalry. And so he dies despite his being on the winning (English) side.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Latest Reviews. Thank You! By Henry I fully agree with Bukowski Lover's concise review. John Hulse does, indeed evoke the wordplay of the Late CB, but he brings an honesty and openness way to beautiful and fragile, so that you'll weep every time that pure sweetness meets the mean streets of this Reality we all share. He'll make you yearn for its Deliverance, and then, suddenly, you'll know what you must do to save it. ... and you're not alone... even if you feel like it. Hulse evokes here a sort of Matthew 5: 1-12 Beatitudes for our times, through deep-diving, immersive views into the world of Empathy and Mercy, and Compassion that are spell-binding in their simplicity. This book should be included in the "Welcome to Humanity" Packets for all newcomers. His poetry will go on being read and studied for years to come. From his pillowcases with magical powers, the consequences of a man coming home five minutes too late, or a Marine platoon in Vietnam making a left turn instead of turning right. The poems build upon one another with lines of creation, then of destruction. Then start all over again with the next poem and the next line. It will wear you down. An overwhelming presence here. And while you are reading, starvation seems inevitable. Survival unsure. An emotional rollercoaster. Soon to be a cult classic.Kristina Betts, Lapel ReviewIt made me blow the dust off my copy of Orwell’s 1984. An amazing compilation.Susan Hampton, Edgewood JournalJohn Hulse is a true Master of the Word, and most tender of Champions for the Human Condition. It made me blow the dust off my copy of Orwell’s 1984. An amazing compilation.Susan Hampton, Edgewood JournalAn emotional rollercoaster. Soon to be a cult classic.Kristina Betts, Lapel ReviewMr. Hulse displays a mastery of the foibles of humanity—specifically men. He’s got a sharp wit, a fresh an interesting take on relationships, and isn’t afraid to push the envelope with his content. His bio discusses his world travels and myriad life experiences, and this reader can’t help but notice how his past very obviously affects his work. It appears to be an organic evolution, because growth in technique, word selection, and image creation is evident throughout. A thoroughly entertaining jaunt through the mind of a man who is without doubt as interesting as his work.Whenever I’ve had the opportunity to read Mr. Hulse’s work, I am always struck by the mix of brutal honesty and humorous socialcommentary. He hasn’t failed to impress with this latest release. His jabs at the evil of corporate America, his insights into the dichotomousnature of public America, and his humble and hilarious comments on his personal life never disappoint. His raison d’être is poetry, and this dedication is obvious. With the loss of so many great poets in the last 10 or 15 years, I am glad another voice is there to contribute to the art.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. A Sheer Delight!!! By Golden Oldie This slim sheaf of poems is a sheer delight. Like Tigger, these poems are bouncy, flouncy, trouncy. Her work often has an almost Seussian beat to it, light and whimsical, like a wisp of smoke on a gentle autumn day. The author still retains a childlike awe and reverence for life. She takes the average, ordinary things in life, the things we take for granted---a twirly dress, time alone at home, her cat---and transforms them into something mystical, magical, and memorable. And just like life, there are a few moments here that are sad and tragic, and evoke a sense of loss and longing. But they always end with hope and a resounding affirmation of love. By all means, buy this book!

I knew it'd help her By Amazon Customer I read this short book of poems from cover to cover in one sitting! The poems are so authenticate; relate to everyday life so well. I cried and laughed, each poem evoking an emotion from things we all go through. I immediately sent one poem off to a friend who is dealing with losing a loved one. I knew it'd help her. This little gem with be my Christmas present to many of my family and friends this year.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Though its written 150 years ago, the ideas are quite modern By A Customer Recognizing the precariousness of arguements from authority and supernatural proofs in light of both science and historical critical understandings of the Bible, Parker wishes to re-establish religion on a surer ground, one consistent with the expansion of knowledge and modernity. He does this by looking at various world religions, history of religions and there development, but continually refers to the religious sentiment to be found in every place. The creeds, scripture, Jesus miracles, etc. are all additions and pale in comparison to the basic truths accessible to all. His use of historical criticism to relook at all the dogmas of Christianity with the intent of revising faith not attacking it, is probably a first among American writers. His theory of religions is remarkably similar to the arguement made by John Hick. Some of his remarks, especially trust in progress may seem very 19th century but the book has a modern quality well written

5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. Review of Driven West, Taken East: A World War II Memoir of the Eastern Front By Amazon Customer Driven West, Taken East is the remarkable narrative of a Latvian student’s survival during World War II from 1939-50 when Eastern Europe, specifically the Baltic States, was torn apart by German fascism and Soviet communism. Vilnis Bankovics recounts in evocative detail, without bitterness or rancor, how he and his classmates at a teacher’s college in Latvia are impressed into service by the Nazis and eventually forced to fight against the Soviets. Bankovics’ memoir is unique among World War II accounts because it is told from the perspective of a young man whose hope for return to his family and an independent nation sustains him in combat, captivity by the Soviets, and transport to the Gulag where he is forced with other prisoners to build their own hard labor camp north of the arctic circle.Bankovics makes vivid how two similar oppressive powers grind up their own armies and commit atrocities against their captors, including political refugees and those from countries along the Eastern Front who are coerced into fighting a war in which their only claim is to protect themselves. Bankovics witnesses the death by starvation and disease of many of his countrymen and fellow humans as they are buffeted by eastern and western forces. He documents the ravages of parasites and sickness in the prisons and camps, the paltry ingredients of the “bread” they are given to eat, the often absurd and pointless work they are required to engage in, and the resourceful ways that prisoners devise to survive. Bankovics is fortunate to have the practical skills of a surveyor and is able to employ his skills in the prisons and camps into which he is driven. His ability to provide skilled labor, combined with his unflagging hope and congenial spirit, sustain him during the war and after in the Gulag.Maris Roze, translator and Latvian émigré, ably renders this matter of fact and timely memoir. Driven West, Taken East reminds us that World War II on the Eastern Front was complicated and tragic. It also reminds us that the results of this war are still evident today in the fluid configuration of Eastern European countries and in the ongoing external ideological and political pressures on individual nations.

Sweet & dark tales By Maria Haskins ‘Tales From The Cacao Tree’ is the latest installment in the Mind’s Eye Series, a series of anthologies containing poetry and short stories inspired by, and accompanied by, photographs. This fourth book in the series, as you may gather from the title and the delectable cover, is all about chocolate.Just like the other Mind’s Eye books, ‘Tales From The Cacao Tree’ is an eclectic and enjoyable blend of different genres and writing styles, and as a reader you get to experience chocolate in every imaginable (and unimaginable!) way. There really is a bit of everything here: beautiful and evocative (and sometimes playful) poetry by Ben Ditmars, Helle Gade, and Richard Weatherly, and short stories by Darcia Helle, Maria Savva, Julie Elizabeth Powell, and J. Michael Radcliffe. Many of the stories inspired by the accompanying chocolaty pictures involve nefarious and violent crimes: so, obviously, chocolate has a dark side…The fantastic photos in the anthology were taken by Helle Gade, Kim Stapf, and Martin David Porter. And reader beware, you will probably end up craving chocolate while you’re reading!A highly recommended anthology, bringing something sweet, something bitter, some darkness and some light. Good stuff all around.

There was fantasy, suspense, contemporary romance and a variety of eclectic poetry - something there for everyone. The authors and poets did a great job working decadent dark and milk chocolate into their stories giving the collection an unusual spin. Kudos to Kim Stapf, Helle Gade, and Martin David Porter for the photography accompanying each story or poem. It was a nice touch.

And it's not just the stories either. There is some interesting poetry in there too. The book truly comes together though with the wonderful photography. And EVERYTHING is about chocolate. Sure, chocolate is sweet; but some of these stories aren't sweet at all - and they're all the better for it. Hey! Dragons cherish chocolate...who knew!?!

The tinkle of an antique servant bell announced my arrival. The shop was so cluttered with priceless art and centuries-old furniture that maneuvering among them was impossible. I stood in place, hoping someone would come to my rescue. Sixty seconds later, she did. I did not hear the opening or closing of a door, and there was nothing to indicate how she had entered the room. Had she been watching me from behind the ceiling-height Asian room divider she would have seen me grasping for distractions—my cell phone, my reporter's notebook, a feigned interest in a chalk drawing that hung on the wall.Nothing I had read could do Lily Goldman justice. She was in her midfifties, but she could have passed for forty-five. Her eyebrows were tweezed in an arched manner, and her blond hair was expertly coiffed in a tame bouffant that looked as if she had come from a salon. Her face was small and refined save for a prominent nose that belonged on a woman twice her size. It was her most striking feature, one that a less self-confident woman of means would have done away with years ago through plastic surgery."May I help you?" Lily asked. Her voice was surprisingly low, and it had a hint of a lady who smoked too much—though I was certain Lily had never picked up a cigarette in her life. Her breeding was too fine for that.I discreetly rubbed my right hand on my pant leg, hoping to dry it. I reached over an antique oak writing desk, where my proffered hand hung in the air. She looked at it blankly."Yes, I'm Thomas Cleary. I'm a reporter, for the Times"For the first time she made eye contact, and I thought I detected a slightly favorable response, but then:"I hate reporters. I never speak to the press," she said."You must be Ms. Goldman." Phil Rubenstein, my editor, had warned me about Lily Goldman's disdain for journalists before sending me on this mission. I got the distinct impression he thought it would be fruitless. She looked away, focusing on a bronze candlestick in the shape of a bird. She rotated the bird one hundred eighty degrees."Birds don't migrate north, they migrate south. It is autumn, after all. This place is such a mess. I need to speak to the staff. Where did you go to school, Mr. Cleary?""You can call me Thomas. I went to Harvard.""At Harvard I bet they taught you that birds migrate south for the winter, north for the summer.""I recall picking up that tidbit at St. Mary's, my grade school in Milwaukee.""A Catholic boy," she said with a wry smile. She waited for me to respond, but I didn't. I was nervous because I was on what I hoped was my big-break assignment. It was my first and only story on the entertainment beat—a short retrospective on Joel Goldman, who had just passed away.Despite the fact that we were only steps away from one of Los Angeles's most bustling intersections, it was strangely quiet in Lily's shop. I had come here straight from the paper, which was alive with phones ringing, keyboards clicking and frantic deadlines being met. Here, there hadn't been a single phone call, not a single customer. No car had passed. There was a formal English garden in front, but its chaises were bare, and its birdbath and trees were devoid of birds."Were you taught by nuns in Milwaukee? I hear they can be terrible on the self-confidence," Lily said."I was," I said, nervously shifting my position. The reclaimed wood beneath me creaked. "It was Harvard that wiped away the self-confidence, though. The nuns weren't so bad in comparison.""Milwaukee to Harvard. Quite the journey. Let's just hope it was a one-way ticket out.""That's still uncertain," I replied—a gross understatement."And Los Angeles? Is this another layover or your final destination?""Yet to be determined, as well."Lily fixed her eyes directly on me. They were deep set and an extraordinary shade of green. "Do your parents miss you?""My mother passed away a year ago." The memory was still fresh and I forced down the lump that formed in my throat. "And, yes, my dad misses me. I'm an only child. He wants me to come home and work for the local paper. But a hundred thousand in student loans later I can't bear to take a U-turn like that.""I'm sorry to hear about your mother…and the student loans."I detected no judgment in Lily Goldman's words, but I suddenly felt embarrassed by the fact that I had referenced the death of my mother and my student loans in the same sentence."How old are you?" she asked."Twenty-six.""She died young, then?""She was forty-eight. Pancreatic cancer.""It must have been devastating."Few people had taken this level of interest in my life since my mom had died, and I almost forgot why I was there to see her. I wanted to sit down in the distressed leather chair to my right, light a cigarette and tell Lily Goldman everything—about my mother, who shriveled into a skeleton while I toiled on inconsequential stories thousands of miles away in Los Angeles, a city I hated; about my grade school piano teacher, Sister Cecilia, who whacked my knuckles with an iron ruler; about the kids who used to pick me last for Red Rover. And I wanted to tell her about Manhattan. What had happened there.Professor Grandy'sJournalism Rule Number One: Never let your subject change the subject."Enough about my situation. I apologize for taking so much of your time," I said. Even as a young boy I had always shunned attention, particularly from strangers, and here I was escorting Lily into the dark corners of my life rather than visiting hers. "I'm very sorry to hear of your father's passing. We're doing a piece on him, and I was hoping you could give me a quote or an anecdote, something that will make the reader know him better—something to remember him by.""Ah, yes, my father."At first that was all she said. I didn't blame her, because he was that kind of man. Joel Goldman's story was as legendary and epic as the movies he had brought to the screen. He had grown up in Nazi-occupied Poland, escaped the gas chamber, passed through Ellis Island as a boy with only a nickel in his pocket and within ten years catapulted his way from reading scripts in RKO's story department to creating one of the big movie studios.According to Joel Goldman's former business associates, Joel had been known for his micromanagement, and that was putting it kindly. When he stepped on set—which he did almost daily—he practiced lines with his leading ladies, he whispered in his directors' ears, he berated craft services for everything from dry strudel to weak coffee. In the age of typewriters, Joel had been known to tear up entire first acts and shred them to the floor while horrified scriptwriters looked on. He scoured expenses to the penny and had been a ruthless negotiator. As a former studio chairman had anonymously told me over the phone that afternoon, "IfJoel Goldman sat across from you and you dropped a penny on the floor, he would pick it up and put it in his own pocket and consider himself the luckier for it."My strongest trait as a journalist was not in asking, but in listening. So I waited."A hell of a man, my father," Lily finally said. "The first man to produce a movie that made a hundred million dollars. Can you believe it? He started a movie studio when he was only twenty-eight years old. That's unimaginable. Nowadays boys your age are pushing mail carts at talent agencies, not winning Academy Awards. That was the golden age of the cinema, of Hollywood. Bogie and Bacall used to come to our house in Cap d'Antibes for tea."She smiled at the memory, and then I lost her behind the Asian screen. "Have you been to Antibes?" she called."I can't say I have."Lily reemerged. She stared at an imaginary point in the distance through heavily leaded antique glass that distorted the outside garden. "We used to sit on the veranda, watch the boats and sip tea with rum. I know it sounds awful, but it's the most delightful drink. It was there that Bette Davis auditioned for What Ever Happened to Baby Jane? The sea there is incredible, so green—so different than the sea in Los Angeles.""It sounds wonderful," I said."The most exciting time of my life. I often think—well, it sounds silly—but I often think that if we go to Heaven we'll be allowed to live our lives again, fast-forwarding through the bad times, of course." She looked away, as if she might have revealed too much to a stranger. "I would go back there. To those times with my father in the South of France. I have no use for Hollywood. I only care for what it bought us."She glanced at the notebook, unopened in my hand. I hadn't written a thing. It might have been nerves, or maybe Lily's personal memories were like coins she had dropped to the ground by accident. Unlike her father, I could not pick them up while she was steps away from me. It would be stealing."Is that the sort of thing you're looking for?" she asked."What?""The quote.""Yes, that's perfect." I scribbled to catch up. "I figured as much. Intimacy—it's what we're all looking for."She focused squarely on me again, this time homing in on my clothes. I had picked up the shirt several years earlier in Cambridge at a discount store and had ironed the shirt and pants myself that morning. The result was deep creasing that was worse than if I had let the dryer have its way with them."How does the paper allow its reporters to dress like they just came from a late night of too much drink?"Lily wore all brown—sweater, knee-length skirt and two-inch pumps. But even in its singular color and simplicity the outfit bled money. The ensemble brought to mind a Parisian tailor on hands and knees with pins in her teeth. The only pizazz in the outfit was a substantial ivory necklace. I had only known Lily for a few minutes, but it already made sense. Diamonds could still be bought on the open market; elephant tusks could not.Lily made a small adjustment to my collar, and her hands rested on my upper spine. It had been a long time since a woman had touched me, and I tightened. As a reporter I was trained to see the tiniest of clues—those fragments and fingerprints others could only see under a microscope. There was, at that moment, a brief spark in Lily's green eyes. And then, just as quickly as her eyes bloomed, they withered and went almost black.I had thought that Lily had been the one to bare her soul in this interview, but instead she had set the course so I would be the subject who revealed too much."You're a very handsome young man. Don't let poor clothing choices get in the way of that," she said, before calling out to the other room, "Ethan, come here."A few seconds later a slight man around my age entered through the French doors in the back."Yes, Ms. Goldman." He spoke in little more than a whisper, and if his slim-fitting attire was off-the-rack it was off an expensive one."Thomas here is going to be attending dinner this evening. Please arrange with Kurt to pick him up.""Thank you for the invitation," I interjected. "But I have a deadline, and I'm not exactly the fastest typist.""That's one thing you'd think the nuns would have done right," Lily said. "It's a fabulous group—some of the guests worked with my father and are quite newsworthy in their own rights. I promise you won't be disappointed."In truth, I generally would have forgone a dinner party invitation, but if there was any opportunity for this dinner to beef up my story on Joel Goldman I knew I had to attend. I gave Ethan my address in Silver Lake, an area on the east side of Los Angeles known as a bastion for artists—all of them hipper than I. Ethan arranged for me to be picked up at seven o'clock sharp."Good. It's decided, then," Lily said. "Thomas, I'll see you soon. Ethan, make sure everything goes smoothly."Lily would soon disappear behind the Asian screen, but just before she did, she turned around and set her eyes on me one more time."Once again, I'm sorry about your mother, Thomas. You must be terribly lonely."Before I could respond, Lily had vanished among the antiques.TwoAnd so that was how it began. Simply, without the fanfare one comes to expect from an evening that turns life's course from left to right. I called Phil Rubenstein to let him know I would be late with the story. Rubenstein hated slipped deadlines, but once I informed him that I would be joining Lily and a "newsworthy" cast for dinner, he let this one slide a few hours to accommodate the extra research. He then shocked me by changing the story from a one-column to two.I had only one sport coat—a sales-rack special from a big-and-tall store in Milwaukee. I was tall and broad in the way Midwestern Germanic men are, but I was not big enough to fill out the coat properly, and its fit had always been loose. I was hoping Lily wouldn't notice. I splashed on some aftershave I had got for college graduation, and I slid my notebook and tape recorder into my jacket's interior pocket. At precisely seven o'clock, my building's downstairs buzzer rang. An Asian man of about fifty, with an expression stern as his handshake, stood at the door."I'm Kurt," he said in the same manner one might use to greet a girl not attractive enough to sleep with."I'm Thomas, from the Times" I added that last part as an afterthought, as if it somehow legitimized me.Kurt opened the back door of a silver Mercedes sedan and I slid in. It smelled of new leather. I suspected Lily was the type of woman whose cars always smelled of new leather. An Evian water and, coincidentally or not, today's Los Angeles Times rested in the seat pocket. I opened the paper to the Local section. My one-column article on the proposed 405 Freeway expansion was on page three.I put the paper back in the seat pocket as we headed west down Sunset Boulevard, toward the sea, as Lily Goldman had called it. I had never been driven by a private driver before and I didn't know if I was meant to make conversation or sit in silence. I decided to take Kurt's cue. He didn't address me once during the hour-long journey; he listened to classical music on the radio and never glanced into the rearview mirror unless it was to change lanes.

Hamby I'm bumping this up to a 4 star from a three for a couple of reasons. First, Brunkhorst has a deft turn of phrase that is tight and doesn't waste words. Yet it also delivers some wonderful descriptive elements that start this story off to a bang. Second, because one of the elements is simply not to my taste. It is not bad in itself and certainly could appeal to people who do care for that type of stuff (i.e. instant romance). And third, it is pretty fast paced and the setting seems, well if not authentic (I have no idea if it is or not) nicely compelling to read about. It has plenty of glamour without feeling like the author is just dropping labels to create a involving sense of place. But it has flaws. First, there is plenty to give an authentic feel to the main character's place in the modern press. And yet at the same time, though there are plenty of references to put this in our current time, the huge incursions of modern technology on said media world, seem too vague and never really pressing save for a few early mentions. This in itself would not be a huge detraction save for the fact that as the main character finds himself delving deeper into the mystery that is Matilda, the story becomes a bit 'soft', lacking depth and things seem to fall into a single path way too easily. Having a bit more of a harder edged world would possibly have balanced that and even centered a story that just seemed to lose the wonderful punch the author started out with.I also found the romance element too sudden and almost glib. Without spoilers, Matilda and the author instantly coming together pretty much ignores or slides over some the oddness of getting involved with someone like her. There is too much of a 'this is so right' gooey cloying naivete about the whole matter that, when coupled with the otherwise smart self-awareness of the narrator, comes off as almost creepy. For me the romance dragged it down too much. I think it would have been more interesting if the main character went after the mystery of Matilda and not Matilda herself. The how did Matilda come to be is much much more interesting than who Matilda is. She seems flat and borders on being simpering. She is uninteresting as a character and lacks any real depth to explain why Thomas so instantly and perfectly falls for her.Overall, I felt it was well written, but just became rather bland a little more than halfway through. Thomas was very interesting but Matilda not so much. A problem with the type of book it turns into. A romance that is rather inexplicable and a boring one rather fast. But I do love parts of it. Brunkhorst captures the feeling of Hollywood luxury in a way that I found engrossing. Reminding of how the late Dominick Dunne used to write (fictionally) about the rich and privileged. I would love to see her focus more on that type of story and less on the too sweet and rather trite romance part.

Brunkhorst has a special flair and voice, an author to watch out for I think By Cheryl M-M Sometimes I come upon certain authors and I just know they have an exceptional talent. Brunkhorst is one of those authors, she has a certain je ne sais quoi.I was really surprised when I read the word internet about half a chapter in, I was certain the scene was set somewhere between 1920 and 1950. The golden age of movies and film stars. It has a specific feel to it. Very Gatsby meets Hollywood.Thomas finds his destiny inexplicably linked to and determined by Lily. She becomes not only a source, but also the door into a completely new world for Thomas. The world of the rich, the famous and the powerful. The people who pull the strings in town.It is never made quite clear in the book, whether Lily has a hidden agenda. Did she know what would happen? Was it her wish to see the golden bird freed from her gilded cage? Is Thomas merely the patsy or can Lily see something in him that is special enough to make her want to support him.Thomas finds this new world fascinating, despite being on the boundary of it, and he craves more of it and time with his new acquaintances. This new world leads him to Matilda.Matilda is an enigma, a young girl trapped in a time warp. She is kept hidden from the world like Rapunzel in a tower awaiting her prince. When he meets Matilda, Thomas forgets about his new connections and everything pales in comparison. No threat of failure, destruction or fall from grace can keep him away from the mysterious and innocent young woman. He is beguiled to the point of not being able to think straight. What happens next is the inevitability of life, of reality and of fairy-tales stripped of their mysticism.Brunkhorst is definitely an author to watch. I think it is safe to say this won't be the last we hear from her. She is an exquisite writer with the very rare talent of surrounding a story with an aura of a specific era. So much so that it never really leaves you as a reader, this feeling of being inside a story within a story. Watching and listening to something unfold in one era whilst being convinced it is taking place in another.I received a free copy of this book, courtesy of MiraUk and Harlequin UK.

5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. Every man has his price By Nitty's Mom Debut author Alex Brunkhorst certainly understands this territory and is able to fashion an evocative tale about the super wealthy Hollywood elite.Thomas Cleary is from a hard working Milwaukee family, who makes good and is able to attend Harvard University. While at college , Thomas decides to choose a profession that will not make him wealthy, Journalism. Now a reporter for the Los Angeles Times, he is sent on assignment to get some quotes for the obituary of a legendary film producer. Thomas makes an immediate connection with the film producer’s middle age daughter, Lily, who invites him into her inner circle. This inner circle includes a famous movie actress and her husband, a music mogul and his wife and David Duplaine “undisputedly Hollywood's most powerful man”. Nothing can prepare Thomas for the opulence that awaits him once he gains access into the world of Hollywood’s very rich and famous. He travels from one wealthy enclave to A- list functions. The glitter rubs off on him as well, as Thomas is now in the ideal position to cover the insider stories. When Thomas meets and falls in love with the mysterious and sheltered Matilda Duplaine, he comes to realize that his college professor might have been correct. “If a story’s handed to you on a silver platter, it's either not worth eating or will cause food poisoning later on”The author is at her best with the poetic description of both places and characters’ feelings. Thomas is an appealing narrator with a good heart, who longs to gain back some of the respect he lost from a previous plagiarism scandal while working at the New York Times. He also bears the scars from a relationship with a wealthy classmate who broke his heart. Always being the one on the outside looking in, how much will he now risk for love?It was interesting to watch Thomas, as he slowly begin to understand the essence of who Matilda is and untangle the secrets those who care for her have hidden in their attempt to protect her. Unfortunately, the love story itself did not match the intensity of the rest of the novel. I could not believe such a seemingly intelligent man would be so blinded by love, that he would not have realized certain foibles sooner. Perhaps that was the author’s intention, however, it never felt heartfelt or authentic. Still there was a lot to enjoy in this evocative and classically styled page-turner.

Babbitt, by Sinclair Lewis

From Publishers Weekly Lewis's tale of middle-class frustration, stress and success in the 1920s is brought to life by the L.A. Theatre Works 1987 full cast production featuring more than 30 actors, including Ed Asner (as Babbitt), Judge Reinhold, Ted Danson, Richard Dreyfuss, Helen Hunt and John Lithgow. With a deep and raspy voice and with great projection, Asner delivers a believable and amusing performance that securely anchors the entire production. Whether bullying his family or spouting politics with his friends at the club, Asner keeps the consistency of the self-aggrandizing character solid throughout. Jazz music segues well between scenes, though without any additional production sound beyond voices, it can at times feel out of place. While the full cast proves enjoyable in their individual parts, many take turns narrating the exposition throughout the production. At times, this is executed well, but sometimes it feels as if the director is just trying to give everyone more voice time. (Sept.) From Library Journal First published in 1922, Babbitt is an authentic modern American classic, a biting satire of middle-American values that retains much of its poignancy today. George F. Babbitt, Lewis's outwardly successful but inwardly unhappy real estate salesman, still seems real. His story makes engrossing reading and is ideal for audio listening. With Babbitt himself at the center of every scene, it is impossible for listeners plagued by frequent interruptions to lose track of the story line. Narrator Wolfram Kandinsky has a voice that many listeners may find grating; however, his reading here conveys an appropriate ironic tone that is especially apt when he reads Babbitt's own lines. Recommended for general fiction collections. Kent Rasmussen, Thousand Oaks, CACopyright 2002 Cahners Business Information, Inc.

Review "This is world-class radio theatre with, for once, an American label." -- Dan Sullivan, Los Angeles TimesSinclair Lewis' classic satire of the ignorantly entrapped entrepreneur gains relevance as a radio play. [T]his sumptuous production features such talents as Amy Irving, Marsha Mason, and Richard Dreyfuss. Edward Asner plays George F. Babbitt with the resolute gusto of the stereotypical American businessperson. . . . [T]his lavish recording sets a magnificent standard. -- Joseph Keppler, Booklist, October 15, 1989The paradigm for Babbitt on cassette remains the multi-voiced, unabridged performance by L.A. Highly Entertaining By Jeffrey Leach Sinclair Lewis wrote a series of satires that exposed the hypocrisy of early 20th century America. “Babbitt” is a snapshot of the life of George F. Babbitt, a somewhat prosperous middle class businessman who lives in Zenith, Ohio. Zenith has a population of 300,000+, and has an active business community. This community has its own rituals and ironclad rules. These rules consist of being one of the gang, being a member of all the right clubs and organizations, and never deviating from the ideals of business and money. These rules cause enormous difficulties for Babbitt when he goes through a midlife crisis at the end of the book and begins spouting liberal ideas and associating with the “wrong” crowd. This is my first encounter with Sinclair Lewis. I really don’t know why I chose to read “Babbitt” first, as I also have copies of “Main Street” and “Arrowsmith”. I think it was the unusual cover of the Penguin edition, which is a picture of a painting called “Booster” by Grant Wood. To me, that picture IS Babbitt, and I’ll always be able to see Babbitt in my head whenever I’m reminded of this book. There really isn’t a lot of symbolism here (and the symbolism that is here is pretty easy to decipher) and the prose is much closer to our present day writing and speech. This is brilliant satire, and you’ll laugh out loud at many of the situations Babbitt gets himself into. An especially hilarious incident occurs when one of the local millionaire businessmen finally accepts an invitation to dine with Babbitt. The evening goes badly because Babbitt is in a lower social class. Lewis then shows Babbitt going to a dinner at an old friends house who is in a lower class then him. It’s hilarious to see the similarities between the two events, and it brings home how class is strictly enforced in Zenith, and by extension, America.Babbitt is a person that I found myself both hating and liking, often within the space of one page. He’s ignorant, in that he is a major conformist who often repeats slogans and phrases merely because others in his circle say the same things. He’s a namedropper who refers to people he doesn’t even know as though they were his best friends. He’s also high volume. Babbitt is one of those people we all know who is always boisterous and noisy so they can hide their own insecurities or ignorance. Just when you think you can’t stand Babbitt for another second, Lewis tosses in a situation that makes you feel for the man. Babbitt is the boss at a real estate company, and he worries about his employees liking him. When a confrontation arises with one of his salesmen, Babbitt frets and doesn’t want to fire the guy, although the rules of business eventually force him to do exactly that. He wants all of his employees to like him. He also feels bad about cheating on his wife while she is away and worries about what his children will think of him when he comes in drunk after a night of carousing. Ultimately, although Babbitt can be a major heel, the reader is almost forced to sympathize with him. This is true especially at the end of the book, when Babbitt renounces his liberal ways and rejoins his old colleagues. His return to the pack is not quite complete, however. Babbitt is changed by his transgression, and has learned a few lessons that he imparts to his son on the last page of the book, thus ending the tale on an upbeat note.I would like to have seen a better section of explanatory notes in this Penguin edition. While some of the more obscure references are defined, many are not. Also, some of the language in the book is very 1920’s slang, and for a 21st century ear, it can be difficult to pick up on some of them. This book is both funny and sad, but well worth reading. Sinclair Lewis eventually won Pulitzer and Nobel prizes for his literary endeavors. It’s not hard to see why. Recommended.

He lives in a medium-sized home in a medium-sized city in the Middle West. He's a middleman--he sells real estate. He went to a state university and depends on his secretary to fix the spelling and grammar in his letters. His children fight over who gets to use the car. His life is pretty straight and narrow, until he begins an affair when his wife is out of town and all of a sudden things aren't so middle-of-the-road anymore.Sound like anyone you know? But "Babbitt" was published--almost unbelievably--in 1922. Funny how little some things have changed. Lewis's satire on suburban life and its conformities was an instant hit. Even today, we know what a Babbitt is--a guy who's all show and no go--whose lifestyle and opinions have been furnished for him but maybe whose soul is a little out of whack. It's a pity that schools usually assign the much slower-paced "Main Street". Read "Main Street" to see what life used to be like. Read "Babbitt" to see how we got to where we are today.

Peppy All-American Booster Weathers Mid-Life Crisis By Bob Newman Sinclair Lewis and Thomas Hart Benton, the artist, were about the same age, they both focussed on the American Heartland, and as I read Lewis, I see that they both had something else in common. They both had a tendency to draw cartoonish characters. George F. Babbitt is the main character of a satire by the same name; you might even laugh aloud in some places. Lewis is skillful, but at times, heavy-handed. He has portrayed an average Joe of 1920, the pep- and vim-obsessed go-getting businessman who was the bedrock of our industrial age, hypocritical, materialist, crooked, conformist, even proto-fascist. Babbitt is a real estate agent, a family man surrounded by the wealth of material goods provided by thriving industrial capitalism. He belongs enthusiastically and unquestioningly to any organization dedicated to preserving his and his family's ready access to those goods---professional group (realtors association), Boosters, church, and set social circle. He spouts meaningless platitudes on every subject, knows nothing except the price of real estate and methods of collusion, and ignores his feelings, his family, and the rest of the world, all the while believing that his city, state, and country are the best in the world. The first 90-odd pages of BABBITT are pure genius; one of the best character portraits you are likely to find in American literature---but it is a caricature after all. Lewis' choice of names underlines his cartoonish glee in writing this brilliant novel---Vergil Gunch, Professor Pumphrey, Chet Laylock, Matt Penniman, Muriel Frink, Opal Mudge, Carrie Nork, and Miss McGoun---names that could have been annexed years later by MAD magazine ! "Babbitt" has long been a word in American English, signifying a conforming materialist citizen without a mind of his own. Perhaps this is not entirely fair.George goes through a mid-life crisis, rebels against his static, materialistic life with its know-nothing attitudes, its moral certitudes, and its boring routines. His closest friend (aren't there certain unspoken overtones of homosexual love ?) commits a dastardly deed, breaking George's heart. "On the rebound", he meets the fantastically-named Tanis Judique, femme fatale à la Midwest. Certain consequences arise, Lewis brings in his ever-present fear of American fascist tendencies, and there's a rather hopeful ending, also in the American tradition. If you are looking for a place to begin reading Sinclair Lewis, BABBITT is an excellent choice. If you already know other Lewis novels, don't miss this one. I would say that with "Main Street", "Elmer Gantry" and "Dodsworth", BABBITT is at the solid gold core of Sinclair Lewis' work. He certainly did deserve that Nobel Prize.

Images in the Pines is more than a book of photographs and poems. It is a book of memories of life in East Texas in the late 1800s and early 20th Century. Newton County, as this book illustrates, is unique within itself, yet so similar to all of East Texas in its history, its culture and its people. Even if you didn't grow up here, you'll find that these photographs and poems will rekindle memories and images of a simpler time, a time where the pace of life was slower and the world didn't seem so rushed or complicated. It is the hope of the authors that you will read and re-read these poems and look at the photographs, and each time you do, you will find a new meaning, new insight and inspiration in them. The ideas in this book should be a constant reminder of a part of Texas where the values of home, family, friends, hard work and community are as important today as they were yesterday.

Each image accompanied by a poetic essay. My personal memories come rushing in as I turn the pages; a time of family gathering on the old porch late in the evening hoping to catch a cool breeze, going to town once a week ,mom shopping for groceries and dad visiting with the other men catching up on the news. Playing outside, the woods and creeks our domain, not cell phones or xboxes. Running to the garden and picking a big juicy tomato, wiping it on my shirt and eating it on the spot! As I sit on my porch looking at the photos and reading the poems I want to go back in time, maybe just for a little while! Thanks guys for the memories!

Ely I know i'm related but I just want the opportunity to be the first one to say what a great story this is. The OLG is about an amazing patriot, husband, father, engineer, amateur golfer and writer. It is a wonderful love story about Bill and Helen Ely as they relive more than 100 years of love and devotion to each other, their families and their country. Their story will amaze, inspire, entertain and educate you. A true story of the classic American Dream coming true through hard work, commitment, perseverance and a little bit of luck.

I actually bought that game and even though it was listed as a seek and find true love game, I wanted to hear the story of this couple in their own words. I still have that game. I would GOOGLE this couple about once a year and when I read Mrs. Ely had passed away, I wrote in her memory book. Please buy this book - I read it in two days and I learned so much about history; however, the most important lesson I learned that every once in a while, two young people will meet, marry and spend 70+ years never once regretting their decision. I have not achieved this but I'm glad I got to know two people who did.
