Le Rêve (French Edition), by Emile Zola

About the Author ?mile Zola was a French writer who is recognized as an exemplar of literary naturalism and for his contributions to the development of theatrical naturalism. Zola s best-known literary works include the twenty-volume Les Rougon-Macquart, an epic work that examined the influences of violence, alcohol and prostitution on French society through the experiences of two families, the Rougons and the Macquarts. Other remarkable works by Zola include Contes ? Ninon, Les Myst?res de Marseille, and Th?r?se Raquin.

In addition to his literary contributions, Zola played a key role in the Dreyfus Affair of the late nineteenth and early twentieth century. His newspaper article J Accuse accused the highest levels of the French military and government of obstruction of justice and anti-semitism, for which he was convicted of libel in 1898. After a brief period of exile in England, Zola returned to France where he died in 1902. ?mile Zola is buried in the Panth?on alongside other esteemed literary figures Victor Hugo and Alexandre Dumas.

I'm afraid I don't have answers to these questions, but perhaps when I've finished the series, I willLe Reve is such a departure from the series, which I'm attempting to read in chronological order of the events of the series. Le Reve is only very tangentially related to the events in the series so far. The main character in the story, a young woman living in a cathedral town north of Paris, is the illegitimate daughter of Sidonie Rougon, the owner of the piano and lace shop and professional meddler featured in La Curee and L'Argent. She is also the sister of Saccard, the swindler who is the main character in those two novels, particularly in L'Argent.Angelique is an orphan who was adopted by the Huberts, a childless couple who embroider sacred objects. Angelique learns their trade but is hampered by an extreme temper no doubt caused by the years of deprivation and abuse in her past when she was passed from institution to foster families. The main thrust of the story is a romance between Angelique and Felicien, the son of the local Monseigneur. It has been Angelique's dream to be carried off by a handsome prince. Naturally, reality and politics interfere, as Felicien is the scion of a noble and wealthy family, and Angelique is at best from the artisan class and at worst a bastard of unknown origin.I had very mixed feelings about this book; I found Angelique's vacillations between her natural passion and temper and her wish to be like Saint Agnes hard to swallow. It made me feel as if Zola knew very little about what is really in young women's minds. I have to admit that I don't know how different young women of the 19th century are from young women of my day, but Angelique didn't ring true to me.Angelique's response to being deprived of the love of her life rang equally hollow. I won't reveal it here, as it would spoil some of the interest of the book. The Huberts rang much truer to me, as being ordinary people burdened with a complicated past and having a complicated response to it. Once more, though, the struggle between virtue and vice is a little forced in my mind. It seems possible that people back in the day would believe that disobeying a parent would result in infertility, but part of me remained sceptical. It was a relief to have characters in the forefront who are trying to do their best to live a decent life and made a refreshing change from La Curee and L'Argent, but the book left me puzzled.

A Unicorn of a Different Color By Reviewer Most readers in France and other Catholic-majority nations in the 19th C would have been acquainted with the Legenda Aurea, the "Golden Legend", the compendium of the lives of saints that had been universally popular since the Middle Ages. The Legends are rich in fantasy, like all fairy tales replete with both the gruesome and the delightful. La Reve (The Dream) is intentionally such a tale of implausible enchantment, a 'fairy tale' novella inserted into the often didactic naturalism of Emile Zola's 20-volume Rougon-Macquart chronicle of society during the Second Empire. The central character, Angelique, springs straight from the pages of the Golden Legend, which in fact she reads avidly and upon which she models the fantasies that control her behavior. Much of the imagery in La Reve, and even some of the odd archaic syntax, comes from hagiography. Zola always excels at description, at scene setting, and in this book he gives his descriptive powers free rein to visualize the cathedral and the cathedral community of Beaumont: the Gothic sculpture, the picturesque old houses and gardens, the heirloom furniture, the embroidered liturgical garments and the workshop where the adopted waif Angelique practices the delicate artisanry of embroidering the chasubles and stolls of her religion of spiritual splendor. Zola is completely in control of his style here, completely restrained from any urge to interpret or extrapolate; this is indeed a 'golden' dream of romance. And yet, somewhere toward the middle of this tale of enchanting innocence, one's heart begins to palpitate, one starts to perceive a looming tragedy, a bittersweet denouement, as if too much happiness cannot be other than a dream even in the enchanted precincts of a cathedral garden.Angelique is an abandoned child, a runaway from an abusive foster home. She is found nearly frozen to death on the porch of the cathedral by the Huberts, a childless couple who take her in and eventually adopt her. The Huberts are the heirs of generations of artisanry in the making of liturgical garments and banners, which they teach the girl. Nothing could more vividly symbolize the antique simplicity and stability of pre-modern traditional culture than such an anonymous art. The girl grows from a wildly erratic, temperamental waif into a beautiful maiden, gifted at her art but completely sheltered from 'contemporary' reality. She lives in the Hubert's ancient dwelling, nestled between the buttresses of the cathedral, isolated even from the bustling commercial lower town of Beaumont. She dreams of a prince charming -- naturally, in the way of fairy tales, one WILL appear -- and of her own transcendence of her shameful birth as a princess of bliss. She also dreams of sainthood, of martyrdom, of the renunciation of worldly happiness achieved by her idolized Saint Agnes. Two such dreams must inevitably clash. There's almost nothing explicit in this novel of Zola's comprehensive theories of heredity and its import in human character. If one happened to read La Reve alone, without any exposure to the rest of Zola's writings, without the context of the whole Rougon-Macquart saga, one might take it to be a quaint, melodramatic, almost operatic love story. But Angelique carries with her a secret that she herself doesn't know. At the time of her adoption, father Hubert goes to Paris to uncover the identity of her birth mother. What he learns is the only linkage of this novella with the other Rougon-Macquart books, and he never reveals his discovery to Angelique or even to his wife. The girl is the illegitimate daughter, given up at birth, of Sidonie Rougon, the daughter of the opportunistic scoundrel Pierre Rougon who founded the wealth of the Rougons. In other words, Angelique could have been a child of prosperity, in Paris, the niece of a powerful cabinet minister, rather than a humble village maiden. There is a huge irony implicit in this 'charming' love story, which only readers of the whole saga will perceive. The question of Angelique's hereditary nature isn't asked in so many words, but her capacity for emotional 'excess' MUST be, for Zola, part of her Rougon inheritance. Zola's subtle irony extends to his portrayal of the provincial values of the cathedral town of Beaumont, a fast-vanishing enclave of the 'ancien regime' of religious certainty. Those values are so pure, so sublime ... and for the lovers in this tale, so cruel and sterile. The generous integrity of traditional France, even if it survives in rural pockets, is "the dream" in the title of this book.

Grit and determination bring Zip his own fame as he becomes the wackiest local TV sportscaster in America. Longing for love, Zip ricochets from redheads to reporters to runners, from friends to flings to fiancees until he finally finds the woman who shows him every moment matters. Inspired, Zip drops the microphone and rolls up his sleeves to serve those in sheltered workshops, inner city dwellings, and foster homes. Finally, a miracle from Our Lady of Guadalupe delivers Zip a new calling to use his media savvy to feed today's spiritually starved souls. With echoes of St. Augustine's The Confessions and Thomas Merton's The Seven Story Mountain, For A Greater Purpose is the heartbreaking and triumphant saga of a dynamic 21st century man who discovers that the purpose of life is written in the Palm of God's Hand.

Especially for the sports lover, this page-turner is full of Zip's trials and triumphs throughout the years. His work in the world of philanthropy/charity is truly inspirational, as his "greater purpose" in life becomes ever clearer. I highly recommend this book.

I should preface my remarks with two statements. First, I have been privileged to be a friend of Zip Rzeppa's for eight years. Second, I am a professional writer, a punctilious grammarian, and a ruthlessly honest critic. This is an interesting, insightful, and inspiring autobiography. Zip has led, and will continue to lead, a blessed and most importantly, real, life. He has known the thrill of victory and the agony of defeat (to borrow a phrase). "For A Greater Purpose" is a book for sports fans, self-help aficionados, Catholics (and indeed, all Christians), old and young, and those who seek their greater purpose.I received the book last night and read it this morning. It was so engaging that I truly lost track of time. Zip's media company, Mater Media, is focused upon producing positive work with an enduring and hopeful message that is ineluctably needed in order to sustain our Faith, our Republic, and our culture in these tumultuous times. As much as this is a work that is sorely needed at present, I opine that Zip has written a "book for all seasons." I cannot wait to read the next offering from Mater Media, as I have certitude that it will be spiritual and spectacular. Please read "For A Greater Purpose" and recommend/disseminate it and "My Rock and Salvation" (Zip's novel) to your friends, family, and associates. "For A Greater Purpose" will touch your heart and soul. For all of you tough guys and tough gals out there, I dare you to read this book without getting misty. It cannot be done. So often we say, "there's nothing positive out there" in roundly bemoaning the ongoing cultural war in our nation and throughout the world. This is your notice - here is something positive and uplifting. Please read it, provide your imprimatur, and spread the joy!

His realism and candor is humble, courageous, gritty, humorous and lovable. His story is loaded with virtues, each taking front stage at different times in his life. His ups and downs corroborate conventional wisdom that hard work and a cycle of failures and triumphs often accompany the road to success (especially in high profile careers). Zip’s life journey is a medley of amazing short stories that will soften hearts and inspire souls, but the steady unfolding and realization of how they fit together for God’s “Greater Purpose” is what makes this book so special. Great job Zip!

Review ''At the end we are steeped through and through with the genius, the vehemence, the indignation of Charlotte Bronte.'' --Virginia Woolf

Review "At the end we are steeped through and through with the genius, the vehemence, the indignation of Charlotte Brontë."—Virginia Woolf

From the Publisher Charlotte Bronte's impassioned novel is the love story of Jane Eyre, a plain yet spirited governess, and her arrogant, brooding Mr. Rochester. Published in 1847, under the pseudonym of Currer Bell, the book heralded a new kind of heroine--one whose virtuous integrity, keen intellect and tireless perseverance broke through class barriers to win equal stature with the man she loved. Hailed by William Makepeace Thackeray as "the masterwork of great genius," Jane Eyre is still regarded, over a century later, as one of the finest novels in English literature.

"Live Yankees in a Coastal Maine Utopia" By Christian Potholm Elijah Kellogg, a very famous Bowdoin College graduate of the early 19th century, was the minister of the local Congregational church (which is now named for him) in Harpswell, Maine from 1844-1954. In addition, he was also a farmer and often gave away his produce to the poor. But Kellogg still found time to write a number of books, including a highly popular series about "Elm Island" in Casco Bay. His quotation early in the narrative very aptly captures the "can-do" spirit of the "live" Yankees after the American Revolution: "Three live Yankees in whom all the shrewd, inventive genius of the race has been stimulated by necessity." The protagonist, Ben, falls in love with an island girl named Sally and despite having his master's sailing license, he doesn't want to roam the world of the sea, but rather farm on the wilderness of Elm Island. Sally, who wouldn't marry him if he were a sea captain, and Ben marry and "fling themselves at hardship" by move to the island, building their own cabin with their own logs, eat coot stew and raccoon and shoot seals for oil to light their lamps and use clam shells for lime to make cement. This ode to the pioneer spirit concludes that while there are poor in America, but to see "real poverty," one has to go to Liverpool.

Simplistic mid-19th century morality with detailed cultural history By Three if by Space Those who knew Americans well from the last part of the 19th century are likely to recognize the superficial assignment of people as "mostly good, industrious and loving" vs. "mostly bad, lazy and mean". Ambiguous, innovative or licentious behavior is glossed. This makes for reading closer to schoolroom moralizing than to storytelling. For modern cultural historians and linguists studying early America however, Kellogg has accurate, detailed and compelling descriptions of frontier life in Maine. You could make a convincing sketch of the log cabin he describes. You'd have a good idea of what people ate. Of what they purchased, vs. what they made.Much time is spent discussing how much game Lion Ben's "big gun" could take down -- when possibly in those days it was cheaper and easier to catch fish, dig for clams, or grow fruits and vegetables. There was very little income, spending it was sometimes planned out years in advance. Perforce, there was little for ammunition, which was a consumable. This frontier attitude connecting the importance of a man with his gun seems to persist today, when few people shoot any of their food. "Lion Ben" is perhaps an early infatuation with technology where the "gee whiz" factor somewhat outweighed measured utility. However Kellogg develops characters in later books. The reading is easy and short, although heavily descriptive at the beginning. Two of the three full page plates in my edition are so poorly executed, they might as well have been omitted.Recommended for social historians, and not much of anybody else.

Possibly the most comprehensive book on the human condition By Sean Patton This is quite possibly the most comprehensive book ever written on the human condition, be it the dawn of the 20th century (when the book was written) or the dawn of the 21st century. This book sadly fell out of print a few years ago, and I am so happy that it is once again available and able to enlighten a whole new generation. Edward Carpenter was a turn-of-the-century poet and philosopher who collected his works into this magnificent volume. He writes about democracy, not in the political sense, but in the social sense. Writing on equality, love, hope and the need to express one's sense of joy in a world that holds so much, Carpenter opens the mind and heart to the true issues that are fundamental to all people.Carpenter's poetry and prose are inspirational and true to everyone's life, regardless of class, color or creed. He truly celebrates life the way it should be celebrated. A glorious tour-de-force, Towards Democracy is a book I would recommend to anyone and everyone.I was given this book in 1991 by a friend as a going away (to college) gift. I was going through many changes in my life, and facing massive depression because of them. He gave me the book after turning to a passage that directly related to my situation, and I have read it no less than five times cover-to-cover. I believe that fate sent him to that book, and in turn, brought it into my life.Any time I feel down-trodden or unable to focus on what is really important in my life, I read a little. It never fails to help. I have shared this book with friends, and they all think it is one of the most brilliant and eloquent books they've read.Don't get me wrong, this is not a book centered on religion, and many of the essays are descriptions of places Carpenter's seen. However, it is his unique vision of the world, his wonderful prose and immense respect of life that make this a book that belongs in every library.

England's Walt Whitman By Thomas Lapins There are certain people and particular pieces of literature that belong to the fabric of man's truest nature. This book, like "Leaves Of Grass" and "Walden" and Emerson's essays, belongs in that category. This is one of those books that are for those quiet moments when the inner space within needs nourishment. Carpenter is the type of man I long to talk to. He understands the fundamentals of the human experience. He is very different than W.W. yet very similar. W.W.'s poetry is more to my liking but Carpenter's temperament and perspective makes W.W. more poignant and relevant. Very powerful lives and natures entangled in the cosmic dance of life. They compliment one another. This is a book to be sipped and savoured in the quiet moments at either the beginning or end of one's day.
