"Live Yankees in a Coastal Maine Utopia" By Christian Potholm Elijah Kellogg, a very famous Bowdoin College graduate of the early 19th century, was the minister of the local Congregational church (which is now named for him) in Harpswell, Maine from 1844-1954. In addition, he was also a farmer and often gave away his produce to the poor. But Kellogg still found time to write a number of books, including a highly popular series about "Elm Island" in Casco Bay. His quotation early in the narrative very aptly captures the "can-do" spirit of the "live" Yankees after the American Revolution: "Three live Yankees in whom all the shrewd, inventive genius of the race has been stimulated by necessity." The protagonist, Ben, falls in love with an island girl named Sally and despite having his master's sailing license, he doesn't want to roam the world of the sea, but rather farm on the wilderness of Elm Island. Sally, who wouldn't marry him if he were a sea captain, and Ben marry and "fling themselves at hardship" by move to the island, building their own cabin with their own logs, eat coot stew and raccoon and shoot seals for oil to light their lamps and use clam shells for lime to make cement. This ode to the pioneer spirit concludes that while there are poor in America, but to see "real poverty," one has to go to Liverpool.

Simplistic mid-19th century morality with detailed cultural history By Three if by Space Those who knew Americans well from the last part of the 19th century are likely to recognize the superficial assignment of people as "mostly good, industrious and loving" vs. "mostly bad, lazy and mean". Ambiguous, innovative or licentious behavior is glossed. This makes for reading closer to schoolroom moralizing than to storytelling.For modern cultural historians and linguists studying early America however, Kellogg has accurate, detailed and compelling descriptions of frontier life in Maine. You could make a convincing sketch of the log cabin he describes. You'd have a good idea of what people ate. Of what they purchased, vs. what they made.Much time is spent discussing how much game Lion Ben's "big gun" could take down -- when possibly in those days it was cheaper and easier to catch fish, dig for clams, or grow fruits and vegetables. There was very little income, spending it was sometimes planned out years in advance. Perforce, there was little for ammunition, which was a consumable. This frontier attitude connecting the importance of a man with his gun seems to persist today, when few people shoot any of their food. "Lion Ben" is perhaps an early infatuation with technology where the "gee whiz" factor somewhat outweighed measured utility.However Kellogg develops characters in later books. The reading is easy and short, although heavily descriptive at the beginning. Two of the three full page plates in my edition are so poorly executed, they might as well have been omitted.Recommended for social historians, and not much of anybody else.
