About the Author As a young man, Brian Kindall was undone by love. Oh, was she ever divine! Dark hair. Blue eyes. The smile of an angel. But then it all fell to ruin. Paul Has a more bumbling, good-natured, ever-resourceful hero ever been thrust into the jaws of perditious prophecy than Didier Rain? It is 1854 and Rain, a “versifier, word collector, would-be entrepreneur,” and closet philosopher sets out on an epic journey from Independence, Missouri to deliver a tiny bundle of a baby called Virtue to the prophet Nehi of The Church of the Restructured Truth in the Territories near The City of Rocks. Equipped with little more than two horses and a she-goat, Rain commences a cross-country journey through the deepest, darkest secrets of family life, unrequited guilt, and Oedipal meanderings.In Delivering Virtue, his first full-length adult novel, Brian Kindall whisks his readers along on a magic carpet ride of surreal darkness and light as Rain encounters a collection of characters some of whom steal his heart, others who prefer to steal his clothes and his manhood. Kindall uses words like magic wands, turning them inside out in beautifully unexpected ways. He paints a dark canvass with clouds of laugh-out-loud humor and tender humanity. "Now I was used to the state of stupor; I had visited there many times before. And as a curious fellow, I have always been intrigued that something so basic could come with so much variety. I had known drunken stupor – feverish stupor – weary stupor – falling-off-your-horse-into-the-mud stupor – the stupor of sensual arousal – as well as a pocketful of other stupors, all more or less similar in their sensation and general wooziness. But never had I been stupefied by way of the butt of a Hawken. It was largely unpleasant, causing a sensational agony in my cranial nut, and yet it did open a certain window that I might not otherwise have noticed. I peered through said window, and stepped into a scene that was bucolic and most inviting."This novel could never survive on only the twists and turns of the plot, clever as they are. But in tandem with an out-of-this-world cast of characters and vivid imagery stuffed with symbolism and sarcasm, the substantial forces come together in a terrific gale of a novel. This is grown-up fantasy fiction, steeped in biblical overtones of right and wrong, innocence and depravity, and ever-hopeful desire to see the bumbling hero fulfill, if not the mission he takes on, the mission that takes him on.

Kindall allows his imagination to whirl out of control in this page-turner of an adventure…and I enjoyed the ride. He’s a master of sesquipedalianism (big words), so be prepared for plenty of “verbalistic flotsam” (this is one of many delightful phrases that appear in Kindall’s tale). And get ready to giggle AND groan. He’s fearless when it comes to describing embarrassing topics, like “malodorous intestinal wind,” and venturing into the dark hole of disturbing behaviors – which leads me to a disclaimer: This book is not for the whole family. Rain, the central character, engages in a number of “spelunkulatory adventures” that will make some conservative readers cringe. Admittedly, I had to rush through a couple of those scenes, but overall, I couldn’t put the book down. “Delivering Virtue” is one of the most creative and hilarious books I’ve read in a long time. I’m a fan.

A strange, off-kilter, funny Western in the vein of TRUE GRIT and THE SISTERS BROTHERS By Josh Mauthe It's fairly obvious that Delivering Virtue is inspired by Charles Portis's superb True Grit (or at least Patrick DeWitt's The Sisters Brothers, itself heavily inspired by that great book). Both are picaresque Westerns narrated by an overly verbose characters; both follow long journeys across the West; and both are filled with any number of strange and odd encounters along the way. Yes, the particulars are different - the trip here follows our "hero" Rain as he brings a child bride across the great wilderness to meet her husband-to-be, a religious prophet - but there's no denying the DNA here - the writing populated with rich flourishes, the dry sense of humor, the sense that we're seeing the West in the days after the fame and fortune had dried up. Luckily for Brian Kendall, his writing is up to the task, creating a rich, entertaining narrator whose running commentary makes the book a blast to read, whether he's justifying his decision to meet up with a lover (despite being warned not to), befriending his horses, or using farm animals to feed the little girl in a way that probably shouldn't be encouraged. There are some oddities in Kendall's book, though, and they both intrigue and frustrate me. Just how old is young Miss Virtue, who starts the book in diapers and ends up speaking in full sentences by the end, after what doesn't seem like that long of a journey? Why are other people punished every time Rain strays from the directions he's been given? And what to make of that odd, odd ending? Delivering Virtue feels ultimately incomplete, a parable where the lesson has been omitted, and while I somewhat admire that, giving the whole tale a cryptic feel, I can't deny that it also left me a bit frustrated, and kept me from loving the book as much as I wish I did. (I feel this most applies to the ending, which left me more baffled than moved.) Nonetheless, it's a delightfully odd Western, with an off-kilter sensibility that I loved, some bizarre and entertaining adventures along the way, and a great sense of style to the whole thing.
