Review "Gloriously suspenseful...magnificent reading...Martin is superb."—RT Book Reviews

About the Author Kat Martin s bestselling novels include "Nothing But Velvet, Innocence Undone", and the Raines of Wind Canyon Series "Against the Wind, Against the Fire", and "Against the Law". She is a graduate of the University of California, where she majored in Anthropology and History, a background that helped to develop her interest in the past. "I love anything old," she says. After being wrongly accused of her ex-husband's murder, she jumps bail, gets a new identity and heads to Alaska to hide from the hit man hired to take her out. After two attempts on her life she's not about to hang around and wait for him to try again. Now she owns a diner, has a guard dog who's been expertly trained, and is slowly beginning to make friends in her new locale.Rafe Brodie owns a trio of charter boats and makes regular stops at Liv' s diner. All the women have the hots for him in spite of the fact he has no plans to settle down and commit himself to any one person. Olivia goes out of her way to avoid him. She's attracted to him, yes, but knows he's nothing but trouble given her circumstances. She's just beginning to get her life back together. The last thing she needs is a guy to complicate the situation even further. However, Rafe is a hard man to resist, especially when he wants something and he wants Olivia in the worst way. When a mutual friend is murdered, the two of them work together to try and find the man's killer. What they stumble across in the process puts them both in danger and threatens the very town they've come to love.Once I started this I couldn't put it down. It kept me turning the pages, anxious to find out what happens. There is plenty of action and suspense, a wide variety of characters that you quickly become involved with, and a hot, steamy romance that is sure to satisfy any dedicated reader of the genre. In my opinion, this was the best Brodie book yet. Kat Martin pulled out all the stops in taking you on a wild ride from the opening murder scene to the end of the book where you are sitting on pins and needles, waiting to see how the author is going to resolve Olivia' s situation once her secrets are exposed. Highly recommend!

By lep I received this book free from Net Galley and the publisher in exchange for an honest review. This is book 3 of the Brodies of Alaska series. I have everyone of Kat Martin's "Against" books and have enjoyed all of them. However, I absolutely love this book the best of them all. In fact, I read this book slowly because I wanted to savor it and didn't want it to end. This is Rafe Brody's story. Rafe is a little different from the rest of the heroes in this series because he is not only bigger and broader than the rest, but he is also more protective and more possessive than any of the other Brodies. Rafe owns several boats and a touring company that allows people to tour Valdez, Alaska, and experience such ocean activities as fishing. Even though this is a quiet, peaceful business, Rafe at one time was in the military.Rafe's heroine is Olivia "Liv" Chandler. Liv owns a restaurant in Valdes, Alaska where Rafe comes in daily to eat. He notices her, but he doesn't want to get involved. Liv also notices him but she too doesn't want to get involved. She has a secret that causes her to keep to herself.Unfortunately, one of Rafe's employees is found murdered near his boats. As it turns out, this young man was engaged to one of Liv's employees. So Liv and Rafe decide that it is their job to find the killer since the police seemed focused on the fiance's ex-boyfriend and don's seem to want to look further. At this point, the story becomes like a "Law and Order" story. This is because, even though the characters start out looking for a small-time murderer of one of their own, the mystery turns into something bigger and more powerful that could affect the entire country. Even Liv's secret becomes inconsequential compared to what could happen if not stopped. The action started pretty early in the book and didn't really let up until the end when all three problems are solved and, of course we get our happy ending.Kat Martin is a fantastic writer who has the ability to give wonderful descriptions and great depth to all of her characters. The plot is seamless, and the author has the ability to allow all three conflicts to work together without confusing her reader.Even though this book is part of a larger series, it works very well as a stand-alone because all of the past characters fit in very well to the plot even if you have never met them before. I have a feeling after reading this book, you will probably want to read the earlier books in this series. I, on the other hand, have to patiently wait for her next book to come out.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. good reading By LAS Reviewer Mystery, murder, a secretive beauty, and a “Freckin’ Hot” hero bring Against the Tide to life.Olivia Chandler hopes, after three years, her past is erased forever. She likes Valdez, Alaska. The people have befriended her. Here is where she’d like to make a life for herself. When an employee’s fiancé, is murdered, Olivia joins forces with Rafe Brodie, the one Katie, the waitress, calls “Freckin’ Hot.” As they and a few friends do their own investigation to clear one friend’s name and find the real murderer, Olivia and Rafe’s attraction to each other raises the heat level. Love scenes sizzle. However, Rafe senses all is not right with Olivia, who has a highly trained guard dog, plus she never speaks of her past and avoids his questions about it. He gets his brother Nick to check her out.As they deal with would-be terrorists, and the fallout from an innocent picture of a party posted on Facebook, plus the information Nick gleans, Olivia seems to get more boxed in minute by minute. How they deal with the situation makes breathtaking and, sometimes, adrenaline-pumping reading.Kat Martin weaves a tapestry of a tale with dark, dark, threads of antagonists on a mission that could create another “9-11” along with dark threads of a different shade from Olivia’s past. These dark threads threaten to overpower, but cannot dim the bright threads of friendship, love, and hope. Ms. Martin’s weaving shows the beauty of the Alaskan setting as she weaves in a few sub-plots that enhance the main plot while never ceasing to work in the bright golden threads of a love that has “toe-curling” moments. This captivating story sweeps the reader along with loyal friends and family, with danger that lurks, and, best of all, with love that finally sparkles with happiness. GOOD reading!originally posted at long and short reviews
