The writer ( Joseph) writes about his feelings of God and his faith which I find so many of us struggle with (man or woman) He faces the truth of his feelings which the reader can relate to. Serious yet funny.......I love books that reflect over life and come out on the positive side of that life!

Step into a world of yellow fever and family secrets, where even the most upstanding of Southern gentlemen may not be as perfect as they seem and the strongest of marriages can have their cracks. The year is 1880, and another steamy summer has arrived in New Orleans. Beautiful, spirited, and not yet twenty years old, Liliana Mirabeau Patterson has settled into a comfortable existence within the boundaries of the city’s Garden District. There is no denying that she and her husband, Joshua, come from two contrasting—if not contradictory—sectors of Southern society. She is a member of an established Creole family, while he is a native of Georgia with strong Scotch-Irish roots. Despite their differences and the disapproval of the old Louisiana aristocracy, however, the two are fully devoted to each other and to their infant son, Gabriel. Then an unwelcome guest barrels through the Pattersons’ door, embarking on a rampage that will change their happy household forever. The name of that guest is Yellow Jack, and his visit will tear the young family apart in more ways than one. And the Roses Bloomed Yellow is the story of his conquest. It is also the story of the faith, love, and loyalty that he calls into question—and the clash of cultures that he brings to the fore.

From School Library Journal Grade 4 Up?If only the superior production values of this audiobook were in service to a better story. The fine vocal characterizations by the actors and actresses really bring the characters to life. To children unaccustomed to read-aloud tapes, using several readers instead of only one will help listeners distinguish who is who. The entire text of the book is narrated, including "he said" and "she said," which allows the tape to be used as a read-along when paired with a copy of the book. Too bad this title is one of Baum's least compelling, even though there are several action scenes. The Emerald City of Oz begins at a snail's pace with the introduction of the villain, Nome King, who wants to destroy the Emerald City and retrieve his magic belt. The beginning also reintroduces Dorothy, Auntie Em, and Uncle Henry. We can look forward to other releases by Piglet Press if they are produced with such a fine cast of actors.Penny Peck, San Leandro Public Library, CACopyright 1996 Reed Business Information, Inc.

22 of 22 people found the following review helpful. best oz book By A Customer Though I loved the original Wizard of Oz, and have enjoyed all the Oz books for more than 20 years (back to when my mother first read them to me), Emerald City ranks as my all-time favorite. It's full of adventure, suspense and humor. Who could forget the ridiculous roly-poly Nomes and their quixotic plan to conquer Oz with the help of some rather bizarre allies? Or the village where every house and fence (not to mention every inhabitant) was edible? As I write this, my week-old son sleeps in my lap. I can't wait to read him this book when he's old enough to appreciate it.

16 of 16 people found the following review helpful. Still my favorite Oz book By Daniel Rosenberg I just read The Emerald City of Oz to my little boy, who's almost five (see my earlier review of the book from 2000 which I wrote when he was about a week old!), and he and I both enjoyed it immensely. We're reading all the Oz books in order, and are now on our eighth (Tik-Tok of Oz). My son is a huge Oz fan.One cautionary note to those who wish to read this book to their young children: My little one was actually quite upset and frightened at the prospect of Oz being invaded and possibly destroyed by the Nomes and their ferocious allies. A number of times I had to soothe him by explaining that Ozma was sure to find some way to save her country. Perhaps this is a better book for older children.

9 of 9 people found the following review helpful. One of my favorite Oz books By frumiousb In this sixth Oz book, Baum makes an effort to close down the series and tie up all the various loose ends. Dorothy, driven by financial disaster, brings Aunty Em and Uncle Henry to Oz to live out the rest of their lives in peace with Ozma in the palace. At the same time, Roquat the Red (the old foe of the girls) decides to lay waste to Oz once and for all to retrieve his magic belt. The middle of the book meanders a bit, as Dorothy takes Aunt Em and Uncle Henry on a tour of some of the stranger parts of Oz. The various towns (Cuttenclips, Fuddles, Utensia, etc.) are half puns, half morality plays, but still clever for all of that. Dorothy is a well-written enough character that she can raise a smile even in a ridiculous scene like the one in Bunbury where she is offered a stale wheelbarrow to eat instead of the lunch she was looking for.The Neill illustrations in this Oz book are particularly magical. For example, the big paste heads of the Whimsies have stuck in my head all the years since I have read it for the first time.I have read all the Oz books multiple times, and this is one of the three which have proven the most memorable. (The other two are The Road to Oz and Ozma of Oz) It gets a high recommendation despite any minor flaws.

This character was created by Edgar Allan Poe; and "The Narrative of Arthur Gordon Pym of Nantucket" (1838) is his only complete novel, and one of the most translated of Poe's works. It is the tale of the young Arthur Gordon Pym, who stows away aboard a whaling ship called the Grampus. Various adventures and misadventures befall Pym, including shipwreck, mutiny, and cannibalism, before he is saved by the crew of the Jane Guy. Aboard this vessel, Pym and a sailor named Dirk Peters continue their adventures further south. Docking on land, they encounter hostile black-skinned natives before escaping back to the ocean. The novel ends abruptly as Pym and Peters continue towards the South Pole. Precisely because of the abrupt end, several authors have attempted at sequels. The two most famous, that we include in this volume, are the ones by Jules Verne and Charles Dake. Verne's An Antartic Mystery presents an imaginative work of fiction as a believable story by including accurate factual details. The two-volume novel explores the adventures of the Halbrane as its crew searches for answers to what became of Pym.

6 of 6 people found the following review helpful. Adventure/Science Fiction By The Old Prospector This is one of Jules Verne's lesser known works. The novel supposes that Edgar A. Poe's "The Narrative of A. Gordon Pym" was a true story. In "An Antarctic Mystery" a ship is searching for survivors of Pym's voyage. There was one problem with the Kindle version: "Quotation marks" were replaced with ???three question marks??? at each end of a quotation. This is a bit distracting. Other than that I liked the book.

9 of 10 people found the following review helpful. Great book - too many errors By e2ipiand1 The number of misspelled and missing words in this book make it very hard to read at times.I thoroughly enjoyed the story and will try to find a better copy.

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. Issues with digitizing. By Raymond E. Keeler When they digitized this book, the double quotation marks ("), apostrophes ('), ellipses (...), and degree symbols (°) were all replaced by one or more question marks. As a result, it was sometime difficult to read. Moreover, there are numerous optical character recognition (OCR) errors that were introduced during the digitizing process. These seem to get more numerous the further you get into the book. But the story is great and the price can't be beat.

Afraid that the illness will destroy his fledgling relationship and writing aspirations, Alvarado Valdivia tries to lead a normal life. He bikes three miles to his treatments while listening to heavy metal, attends writing workshops, and continues his hard-partying ways. When his girlfriend Paola ends their on-again, off-again relationship after a particularly troubling episode of binge drinking, he begins to acknowledge his anger and alcohol abuse.

Review

Balancing treatment, a part-time job, completing his MFA and maintaining a relationship, the memoir is a study in courage. When faced with a devastating diagnosis an individual must decide to either dissolve into self-pity or find within themselves the strength to do what needs to be done. Not only for one's self but for our loved ones as well. It is not easy. Although somewhat immature at the time of his 30th birthday Juan was handed the cancer dilemma and for the next several months through his own tenacity, and the love and support of his parents was able to come out the other side with a clean bill of health. I particularly admire his decision to ride his bicycle to treatment even in the early hours of the morning. Speaking from my own experience, the weather in San Francisco in January, no less, can be unpredictable and brutally cold. Juan was determined not to let his illness dictate his daily activities. Having lost loved ones of my own to cancer, I appreciate the opportunity to learn about certain aspects of the chemo and radiation treatments which I had not previously been aware of, and had not wanted to ask about. For example, the shields used in the radiation phase. My only criticism of the book would be all the time devoted to his relationship with Paola. While I understand that it was crucial to include this with regard to Juan's own inner growth and maturity I just feel there was too much time spent on the see/saw of events. The woman did not deserve him anyway. I love Juan's writing style and hope to read more from him in the future.

A powerful, poignant, passionate, and profane memoir By R.Nye I can't remember the last time I devoured a book the way I tore through Juan Alvarado Valdivia 's memoir, ¡Cancerlandia! It's powerful, profound, profane, poignant, passionate, personal, praiseworthy, and other things that don't start with the letter "P." His is a unique voice, unwavering in its willingness to expose his vulnerabilities as well as his determination as he deals with the unfortunate hand he was dealt with Hodgkin's disease. Diagnosed at age 30, just as he began an MFA program, Alvarado Valdivia must go through the exhausting gauntlet of treatment, and doesn't hold back from sharing the details of his experience. Far from a "how to" book for surviving chemotherapy and radiation, Alvarado Valdivia candidly takes the reader along on his adventures with "Mr. Hodgkins," and brings a deeper understanding of what it's like to be overwhelmed by the world of cancer: Cancerlandia, a world he enters reluctantly, then must come to accept. The author not only survives, but defeats his nemesis-- and the beauty of his story is in the details.
