Diagnosed with Hodgkin's lymphoma three weeks after his thirtieth birthday, Juan Alvarado Valdivia finds himself immersed in Cancerlandia--oncology appointments, waiting rooms, and chemotherapy infusions at San Francisco General Hospital. Afraid that the illness will destroy his fledgling relationship and writing aspirations, Alvarado Valdivia tries to lead a normal life. He bikes three miles to his treatments while listening to heavy metal, attends writing workshops, and continues his hard-partying ways. When his girlfriend Paola ends their on-again, off-again relationship after a particularly troubling episode of binge drinking, he begins to acknowledge his anger and alcohol abuse.

Comic and unsparing, ¡Cancerlandia! chronicles Alvarado Valdivia's journey as he not only fights to survive his personified adversary, Mr. Hodgkins, but also struggles with his own self-destructive spirit.

"In this frank and often humorous memoir, [Alvarado Valdivia] documents the yearlong battle he waged against the disease, making his way through chemotherapy and radiation while endeavoring to come to terms with his own private demons. As he faces down the evil foe he dubs 'Mr. Hodgkins,' Valdivia works his way to health and a newfound understanding of himself."--San Jose Mercury News

Balancing treatment, a part-time job, completing his MFA and maintaining a relationship, the memoir is a study in courage. When faced with a devastating diagnosis an individual must decide to either dissolve into self-pity or find within themselves the strength to do what needs to be done. Not only for one's self but for our loved ones as well. It is not easy. Although somewhat immature at the time of his 30th birthday Juan was handed the cancer dilemma and for the next several months through his own tenacity, and the love and support of his parents was able to come out the other side with a clean bill of health. I particularly admire his decision to ride his bicycle to treatment even in the early hours of the morning. Speaking from my own experience, the weather in San Francisco in January, no less, can be unpredictable and brutally cold. Juan was determined not to let his illness dictate his daily activities. Having lost loved ones of my own to cancer, I appreciate the opportunity to learn about certain aspects of the chemo and radiation treatments which I had not previously been aware of, and had not wanted to ask about. For example, the shields used in the radiation phase. My only criticism of the book would be all the time devoted to his relationship with Paola. While I understand that it was crucial to include this with regard to Juan's own inner growth and maturity I just feel there was too much time spent on the see/saw of events. The woman did not deserve him anyway. I love Juan's writing style and hope to read more from him in the future.

A powerful, poignant, passionate, and profane memoir By R.Nye I can't remember the last time I devoured a book the way I tore through Juan Alvarado Valdivia 's memoir, ¡Cancerlandia! It's powerful, profound, profane, poignant, passionate, personal, praiseworthy, and other things that don't start with the letter "P." His is a unique voice, unwavering in its willingness to expose his vulnerabilities as well as his determination as he deals with the unfortunate hand he was dealt with Hodgkin's disease. Diagnosed at age 30, just as he began an MFA program, Alvarado Valdivia must go through the exhausting gauntlet of treatment, and doesn't hold back from sharing the details of his experience. Far from a "how to" book for surviving chemotherapy and radiation, Alvarado Valdivia candidly takes the reader along on his adventures with "Mr. Hodgkins," and brings a deeper understanding of what it's like to be overwhelmed by the world of cancer: Cancerlandia, a world he enters reluctantly, then must come to accept. The author not only survives, but defeats his nemesis-- and the beauty of his story is in the details.
