Excursions, by Ralph Waldo Emerson, Henry David Thoreau

Review "Presents newly edited texts of nine essays--including some of Thoreau's most popular and engaging works--drawing from his writing career between 1842 and 1862. The collection highlights Thoreau's early use of themes and approaches that recur throughout his work, including explorations of internal and external geography."--Times Higher Education"Students of textual editing should study this production as a model of the meticulous layers of investigation required to reach the highest standards of their craft. Thanks to Moldenhauer and the many others who assisted with this work, scholars and general readers now have, at long last, a critical text of Thoreau's beloved nature essays, a text that reproduces as closely as possible Thoreau's authorial intentions."--Laura Dassow Walls, New England Quarterly"We are grateful to Moldenhauer and Princeton University Press for their continuing dedication to providing modern readers with editions of Thoreau's writings that are sound, beautifully-produced and enduring pieces of scholarship in their own right."--François Specq, Transatlantica"Because of Moldenhauer's hard work, we know, in so far as it can be known, that when we read his text, we are reading Thoreau. The text is pure Thoreau, but Moldenhauer deserves a world of credit for making it what it is."--Robert DeMaria, Amherst Magazine"These essays are bound to have a growing impact on American culture. It is a pleasure to have them in this historically informative and scrupulously edited new edition."--David M. Robinson, Thoreau Society Bulletin

'There was an excellent wisdom in him, proper to a rare class of men, which showed him the material world as a means and symbol… he had in a short life exhausted the capabilities of this world; wherever there is knowledge, wherever there is virtue, wherever there is beauty, he will find a home.' —Ralph Waldo Emerson, from his Biographical Sketch

From the Back Cover 'There was an excellent wisdom in him, proper to a rare class of men, which showed him the material world as a means and symbol... he had in a short life exhausted the capabilities of this world; wherever there is knowledge, wherever there is virtue, wherever there is beauty, he will find a home.' Ralph Waldo Emerson, from his Biographical Sketch A selection of ruminative nature writing on walking and the beauty of New England, here Thoreau's characteristically wide-ranging and philosophical style offers a multitude of fascinating observations. Excursions presents Thoreau's most studied and expansive collection of writing on the natural world. An early advocate of conservationism, he discusses here, in mesmerising prose, the complex but essential relationship between man and nature. This edition includes a remarkable Biographical Sketch by Thoreau's great contemporary and mentor Ralph Waldo Emerson. This choice collection of Thoreau's nature writing includes the essays 'The Succession of Forest Trees', 'Walking', and 'Autumnal Tints' - each one an explorative reach into the heart of the natural world. Thoreau's travels through the woods of New England are not only physical journeys through some of the most awe-inspiring landscapes in America but also spiritual excursions of the mind. Henry David Thoreau (1817-1862) was an American author, naturalist, transcendentalist, tax resister, development critic, and philosopher. His many publications include such classics as Walden and Civil Disobedience. Jeffrey S. Cramer is Editor of Walden: A Fully Annotated Edition and I to Myself: An Annotated Selection from the Journal of Henry D. Thoreau, both published by Yale University Press.

For Thoreau fans By Schuyler This is not a book for the first-time or even second-time reader of Thoreau, but for Thoreau fans, especially those familiar with the Princeton University Press edition of the Writings of Henry David Thoreau, the publication of this book is an event. The Princeton series, for those not familiar with it, is the definitive edition of the writings, with exhaustively researched texts and detailed textual introductions and notes, in this case for each of the essays included in this volume. "Excursions" is a welcome addition to the series. There are relatively few notes identifying named individuals and quotations in the text, and for that kind of annotation I would recommend the Library of America edition of the Essays and Poems, another excellent volume.

Dahle I enjoy reading Henry David Thoreau and have a number of his books and articles on my shelves, but since buying a Kindle, I thought it would be nice to have some of his works available on the Kindle, and it is, but I think maybe it's worth it to pay a little bit for a version that has a clickable table of contents and so forth.

Varied Collection By Amazon Customer This is a collection of essays and travelogues written by Thoreau reprinted mainly from journals such as the Atlantic Monthly to which Thoreau was a frequent contributor. The contents are:--A Yankee in Concord--Natural History of Massachusetts--A Walk to Wachusett--The Landlord--A Winter Walk--The Succession of Forest Trees--Walking--Autumnal Tints--Wild Apples--Night and Moonlight--May Days--Days and Nights in ConcordThe first essay is a longish travelogue about a short trip to Quebec City, in which Thoreau describes his experiences during the trip, such as how he traveled, with whom he stayed, and notes on the flora and fauna he encountered along the way. The other essays are more concerned with the observations of Thoreau as a naturalist, while there is often a significant philosophical content as well.Certainly, Thoreau was very observant, and the scientific accuracy of essays such as The Succession of Trees is remarkable, given what was generally known about the topic at the time. On observation, Thoreau writes "Wisdom does not inspect, but behold....We do not learn by inference and deduction and the application of mathematics to philosophy, but by direct intercourse and sympathy." On enjoying the golden colors of the fall, he notes "Wealth indoors may be the inheritance of few, but it is equally distributed on the Common." He instructs "Objects are concealed from our view, not so much because they are out of the course of our visual ray as because we do not bring our minds and eyes to bear on them; for there is no power to see in the eye itself, any more than in any jelly...There is just as much beauty visible to us in the landscape as we are prepared to appreciate,--not a grain more." All in all, this collection of essays is well chosen, and includes many of Thoreau's well-known short works.

His place in history as one of the greatest minds of 20th-century science is, unfortunately, vastly underrated. As a writer he is captivating and heartwarming, even when he writes of sad nostalgia or career-related frustrations. His grace and graciousness come alive in these pages. His love for his family is beautiful. The depth of his struggle to push the boundaries of knowledge leaves you just as frustrated. This journal offers a rare glimpse into a non-stoned spiritual mind of the 1970's. Then the 1980's arrive and you're left waiting for volume 3.This book is more of a document of Vallee's interesting career and devoted mind than a book about UFOs, remote viewing, or even science. Chances are this won't be the first Vallee book you read, but if it is you will hopefully seek out his others. It was with extreme pleasure that I learned of this book's recent publication. His insights into the parapsychology research at Stanford in the 1970s are priceless, and his anecdotes of Anton LaVey are original as well. But it is really Jacques' humbleness that makes this a great read even if you are not interested in any of these topics.Worth the cover price and then some. A true living legend.

Reinckens II This book is an excellent work from SO many perspectives. Vallee's behind-the-scenes experiences belie the claim that the U.S. military and intelligence community abandoned all interest in the UFO phenomenon after the Condon Report. His descriptions of nature, interacting with his family, etc., show the soul of a poet--with the literary talent to match.Vallee also discusses with an insider's knowledge why the various major UFO organizations of the 1960's and early 70's gradually fell apart, with personal insights about many of the "major players".For those interested in the origins of the Internet, natural-language databases, electronic conferencing, and *especially* the political wrangling that takes place in companies faced with a paradigm shift from technology and why systems ultimately do or don't get accepted, this is a goldmine.Vallee also corrects a lot of misinformation that has circulated as fact for years in technical circles. As he points out, most of the people writing about the early history of modern computers, networking and the Internet were children when a lot of these things occurred and a lot of facts have been obscured by myths. For instance, the computer mouse was not developed at Xerox PARC, it was developed almost a *decade* earlier. It is also fascinating to see Vallee's 30-year old comments about how "some day there will be electronic networking communities and people will form social networks through computers". But then, again, as he points out, some people told him ... "Nah, that's never gonna happen."Vallee also discusses quite a bit about military psychic research about remote viewing, psychokinesis, efforts to kill by "thought" power, etc. He points out that the U.S. military was concerned about the possibility that someone with telekinetic powers could trigger a nuclear weapon.I was also quite surprised how many famous people Vallee didn't simply meet but got to be fairly friendly with, including Anton Levay, Timothy Leary, Ira Einhorn, Doug Engelbart, Uri Geller, Andria Puharich and many others.

Jacques Vallee's journals continue in California By The Guardian The second volume of Jacques Vallee's personal journals (revised edition published 2009) takes up the narrative in summer 1970, when following the publication of `Passport to Magonia' the author moved his young family to Northern California and took a job with Stanford University's nascent computer department as an information retrieval specialist. The book finishes in 1980 with the publication of `Messengers of Deception'.On p485, the author muses "A diary is the record of an age...history is a set of harmonious curves, while a diary plots individual points around the curve, precisely," an excellent summary. Within these pages are detailed narratives recording Vallee's involvement with the remote viewing and psi-research programs at SRI (financed by the CIA) and his dealings with people like Ingo Swann, Uri Geller and Apollo 14 astronaut Edgar Mitchell; his continuing relationships with people like Allen Hynek, Peter Sturrock and Aime Michel; the invention of the computer mouse (by Vallee's colleague Douglas Engelbert) and development of networks from which grew the internet; and observations about political and societal trends in the USA and Europe. Vallee also gets to know Steven Spielberg, with whom he discusses the alien-contact scenario postulated in the film `Close Encounters of the Third Kind' (Spielberg based the character played in the film by Francois Truffaut on Vallee himself, and invited Jacques and Janine to the premiere).California in 1970 was at the leading edge of the `hippie movement' summarised by Vallee as "...an age that defied all conventions but failed miserably to set new standards" (p463). Jacques was definitely not a fan of `mind-expanding drugs' or of the `sexual revolution':"As revolutions go, this one is pathetic. America struggles with an emotional heritage heavy with puritanical repression...history is full of examples of morally permissive political dictatorships...I see the US moving in a short time from hypocritical puritanism to hypocritical promiscuity" (p39).Working with computer networks in Northern California in the early 1970s, Vallee was at the forefront of the IT revolution and surrounded by cyber-visionaries who foresaw the internet age 20 years ahead of its actuality:"This project prefigures a network-based society which will not be attained for another 10, 20 or 30 years...Engelbart's vision is of instantaneous exchanges over wires of intelligence, of a vast pool of information available to everyone..." (p123)Jacques discourses warmly on family matters and his children as they grow up, recounts many anecdotes of life in North California during these years and the Vallees' various house moves, and his extensive travels to Europe and elsewhere.`FS volume 2' also contains accounts of the author's personal experiences of telepathy and prophetic dreams and a great deal of material about his investigation of cults and esoteric movements including the Rosicrucians, `Bo and Peep', Melchizedek and the life and work of British occultist Aleister Crowley. Don Hanlon, who in Chicago in the 1960s introduced Vallee to the idea that some aspects of the UFO phenomenon superficially resembled Marian apparitions and traditional European fairy tales (the source material for PtM) became a disciple of Crowley and stimulated Vallee's interest in this whole area of human experience, later explored in his 1979 book `Messengers of Deception'. Vallee admits his own exploration of the UFO phenomenon has gone up a blind alley but retains a refreshingly open mind:"...my search, so far, has been a failure. If I ever lose everything, I hope to keep one thing the longest, namely the ability to doubt my own theories, question my own beliefs" (p281).With detailed accounts of `The Invisible College' and the contemporaneous `Edge of Reality' projects, FS2 is almost - but not quite - up to the page-turning standard of FS1. Unfortunately Vallee's scorn for those who don't completely share his views (which turns out to be just about everybody) shines a little too strongly, and towards the end of these journals the arrogance - there's no other word for it - frankly becomes tiresome. For this reason I would award this second volume four stars instead of five, but its 491 pages still make for a deeply engaging and (mostly) intelligent, thought-provoking read.On one of Aime Michel's visits to the Vallees in California, we learn of his far-sighted vision of an internet-dominated future and the only viable life-philosophy of how to deal with it:"Aime said the only good strategy in life was to know and participate, to share in the knowledge, and then retire in silence and denial to some faraway place, turning inside, refusing to adapt: `In the information-rich world, the only people who will survive will be the invisibles, the very poor, and those who cannot or will not communicate'" (p137) - from a 2013 perspective, this looks prophetic indeed.

A loosely autobiographical novel, this was Goethe's first major success, turning him from an unknown into a celebrated author practically overnight. The majority of the story is a collection of letters written by Werther, a young artist with a very sensitive and passionate temperament, sent to his friend Wilhelm. In these letters Werther gives a very intimate account of his stay in the fictive village Wahlheim, where he meets and falls in love with Charlotte, who is, however, already engaged to an older man named Albert. Despite the pain this causes Werther, he spends the next several months cultivating a close friendship with both of them. Translated by R.D. 3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. great literature By Mei Johann Wolfgang von Goethe (1749-1832) published this book in 1874. Most of the book is written as a epistolary novel in the form of letters written by the 'me' (Werther) to his friend Wilhelm. This book is typical for the 'Sturm und Drang'-period, which is a type of German literature written mainly in the period 1767-1785. It is a reaction to the rationalism of the Enlightenment and advocates listening to your heart, feelings take precedence. In this book the student Werther falls in love with Lotte, who looks after her brothers and sisters after the death of her mother. Lotte is engaged to Albert. Werther becomes friends with Lotte and Albert, even though it hurts him that they are engaged. After a while his pain becomes too much and he leaves town, but later decides to go back. I won't tell what happens then because I don't want to give away the ending, but there is a lot of emotions, feelings, hurt and desperation before this book ends. This version is the translation by R.D. Boyan and was edited by Nathen Haskell Dole. The printed edition has 117 pages, this is 1585 locations in this Kindle version. This book is in the public domain, so even if Amazon does not offer this book in your area, you can still get it for free from several websites. At the moment of writing Amazon also offers this book for free in German. This book is a major literary work, and I recommend it to everyone who loves reading good literature. As a sample I copy the first few sentences of this book:How happy I am that I am gone! My dear friend, what a thing is the heartof man! To leave you, from whom I have been inseparable, whom I loveso dearly, and yet to feel happy! I know you will forgive me. Have notother attachments been specially appointed by fate to torment a headlike mine? Poor Leonora! and yet I was not to blame. Was it my fault, that, whilst the peculiar charms of her sister afforded me an agreeableentertainment, a passion for me was engendered in her feeble heart? Andyet am I wholly blameless? Did I not encourage her emotions?[...]

One small flaw I noticed is the variability of the font used for the dates of Werther's letters. Some dates are bolded (a majority) so when one is not bolded, the reader may be confused. Nothing too bad for a free text, and an extremely enjoyable piece of literature.

Sometimes, I truly appreciate great classics, for themselves as works of art, not just as for artifacts of culture. But sometimes, I can't make the breakthrough and get really involved with a work -- I observe it, rather than experience it. "The Sorrows of Young Werther", for me, was such a book. I am glad I finally read it (I have certainly read enough about it, over the years) but I won't do so again. Perhaps if I read German, or perhaps if I were a third as old as I am ----- .

The Whispering City, by Sara Moliner

Review ''The Whispering City is not simply a magnificent thriller: it is a vivid and forensic dissection of an era cloaked in a tyranny of silence.'' --Marc Pastor, internationally bestselling author of Barcelona Shadows ''One of the most original, dynamic, convincing and addictive crime novels around today.'' --El Mundo (Spain) ''The plot…is embellished with ingenious twists and turns, and the concept of using linguistics as a detection tool is fascinating. Ana is given a crash course 'in what she was allowed to think and what she should keep quiet', and it is this evocation of an era when brutality and repression are the norm that gives real pause for thought.'' --Daily Mail ''An exciting, original an thoughtful thriller that paints a vivid picture of the awfulness of life in Barcelona, and indeed in the whole of Spain, during the fascist years.'' --Literary Review

By Raven The Whispering City by Sara MolinerBarcelona, 1952.General Francisco Franco’s fascist Government has Spain in a death grip. People are afraid, as those who oppose Franco are dealt with brutally. Once prosperous families now find themselves in menial jobs because they dared to oppose the regime.Mariona Sobrerroca, a wealthy socialite, has been discovered murdered in her home, with clear signs of a robbery. A suspect, Able Mendoza, is named on the very first page. The editor of the La Vanguardia newspaper which runs only by Franco’s largess needs a reporter to write the articles for the paper. Editor Mateo Sanvisens assigns female reporter Ana Martí Nogeur, and daughter of a newspaper publisher that Franco’s government ruined, to the case. She is to shadow Inspector Isidro Castro of the Criminal Investigation Brigade as he collects evidence. Castro is a product of the regime whose tactics run to intimidation, beatings, and torture. He only wants to close cases. The facts do not bother him as long as the case is closed and his bosses satisfied. But Martí has the hunger of an investigative reporter and her sleuthing, and consulting with former Professor Betriz Nogeur, her newfound cousin; leads to a stack of letters that could break the case. The letters show that more than one woman has been victimized, but are the women all dead, and are all the letters by the same man: that is the question. This book has a strange effect on me. I will say that it isn’t the best prose I’ve ever read. Sometimes it was like wading in molasses. At times I would get to the end of a chapter, and still wonder when, what, where, when, why and how.But here’s the thing. I kept reading. I couldn’t put the book down. The prose has a positive effect on the reader in that it is capable of mesmerizing one without one even realizing it.As one gets further into the prose, the historical insight on what it meant to be a reporter who feels the people have a right to know, and a policeman who is trying to do his job the best he can while under a Dictator who must be obeyed at all costs; makes for pretty good reading. The mystery is layered, and there is no closure that doesn’t lead to further questioning. Those deemed guilty are punished, but not necessarily because they were guilty. In rating this book I must rely on an age old standard. Is this novel written in such a way as to draw the reader in? That answer is an undisputed “Yes!” Sometimes the prose may be a little hard to wade through, but there is always a light and a beckoning finger that keeps you reading on to the end. That kind of talent doesn’t often come along. Sara Moliner, Bravo! I grant five out of five stars!Quoth the Raven…

By Jim Napier, mystery & crime fiction reviewer Barcelona, Spain, 1952: a thief picks a lock and stealthily enters a house in a fashionable neighbourhood, only to encounter a woman lying dead on the floor, beaten and then strangled. The house has been ransacked. The man flees, certain only that he doesn’t want to be any part of it.The victim is Mariona Sobrerroca. The widow of a wealthy man, Jerónimo Garmendia, the case is certain to attract public attention. But a Eucharistic Congress is to be held in the city in a month’s time, and the public prosecutor, Joaquín Grau, wants it solved before then. Before long journalist Ana Martí receives a call from her editor: he wants her to over the story. La Vanguardia has been handed an exclusive by the police in an effort to control press coverage. Inspector Isidro Castro of the Criminal Inspection Brigade in charge of the investigation. Marti is told to work closely with him, in effect publishing only the official police account of the case. Not an unusual turn of events in 1950’s Spain.Still, Martí is surprised by her assignment. Normally such prominent stories would go to her colleague, Carlos Belda, a man of some experience who covers the police beat. Was it due to her editor’s friendship with her father? One thing is certain: Belda will be angry when he learned she’d been handed the plum assignment. Belda is not nearly so angry as Inspector Castro, though, when he learns that an inexperienced reporter usually assigned to cover fashion and social events has been handed the case. He is openly contemptuous of her, and tells her so. Then he lays out the rule by which she will be allowed to work with him: she will work only from his notes. But the fledgling reporter insists she will cover the story herself. Thus begins a many-layered tale that includes not only a murder, but also a cat-an-mouse game between a headstrong reporter who senses her opportunity to move up and a police detective used to getting his way, played out against the intrigues of the shadowy world of Barcelona. It is a well-structured tale that can be enjoyed on many levels, not least in the authors’ ability to paint a revealing portrait of everyday life in Franco’s Spain.Employing multiple points of view and an informed awareness of Spanish life, THE WHISPERING CITY is the first novel of writing duo Rosa Ribas and Sabine Hoffman, and augurs well for their future work. There are several less-than-felicitous writing errors, but they are of little consequence; most readers will enjoy a well-told tale that could mark the debut of an intriguing series featuring the odd-couple duo of Ana Martí and Inspector Isidro Castro.________Since 2005 Jim Napier's reviews and interviews have appeared in several Canadian newspapers and on various crime fiction and literary websites, including his own award-winning site, Deadly Diversions. It is 1952 and Franco’s regime rules by means of terror and fear. Ana Marti is a young journalist, who chafes at having to write stories on the society parties and fashions of the day. Now, one of the socialites she reported on has been murdered. Mariona Sobrerroca, widow of a well known doctor, has been discovered in her husband’s office – pale, blonde, voluptuous and dead… With the normal crime writer away, Ana gets her chance to do some real reporting for once.Ana has to work under the rules of the Inspector assigned to the case. Isidro Castro is heavy handed and, like most of the men Ana comes into contact with, is not thrilled at the interference of a woman in his case. Castro is under pressure to solve the case before the Eucharistic Congress, which is going to be held in Barcelona the next month, so he is keen to track down the murderer. However, when Ana comes across a clue that everyone else has over looked, she begins to investigate herself. Along with Beatriz Noguer, a specialist in linguistics who is unable to work under the new regime, the two women discover the murder is not a simple interrupted burglary, as they first thought. This is a really interesting mystery, with great characters and an interesting background. The level of corruption and casual police violence is brilliantly written. Both Ana and Beatriz have suffered under the regime, the press are virtually dictated to and free speech is dangerous. The novel weaves various strands of storyline together really well and I really enjoyed the characters of both Ana and Beatriz and hope they appear in further novels. Lastly, I received a copy of this book from the publisher, via NetGalley, for review.

In the home of Jonas Prim, president of an Oakdale bank, a thief makes off with a servant's clothing and valuables belonging to Prim's daughter Abigail. Abigail is thought to be absent visiting Sam Benham, whom her parents want her to marry. Escaping, the thief later encounters a group of hobos and is taken for one of them, the Oskaloosa Kid. Two of the hobos attempt to murder the newcomer for the loot, who shoots at one and flees. Meanwhile, the Prims discover the theft and learn that Abigail never arrived at Benham's. The incidents are assumed to be connected to other crimes, the assault and robbery of John Baggs and the murder of Reginald Paynter, who had been seen with two men and a girl. The local paper speculates Abigail might have been involved with Paynter's murder. Mr. Prim hires a private eye. The thief encounters another vagrant, Bridge, and the two take refuge from a storm in the deserted Squibb house, site of an old murder. Nearby, a shot is heard from a passing car, from which a woman is thrown. The two take the unconscious woman into the house. There they discover a dead body and hear something in the cellar dragging a chain. They lock themselves in one of the rooms. The woman, reviving, reveals herself as the girl with Paynter. The other men in the car were Terry, the driver, and the Oskaloosa Kid. She says the Kid murdered Paynter and afterwards threw her from the car and shot at her when she wouldn't keep quiet.

The Oakdale Affair, by Edgar Rice Burroughs

About the Author Edgar Rice Burroughs (1875-1950) is the creator of Tarzan, one of the most popular fictional characters of all time, and John Carter, hero of the Barsoom science fiction series. Burroughs was a prolific author, writing almost 70 books before his death in 1950, and was one of the first authors to popularize a character across multiple media, as he did with Tarzan s appearance in comic strips, movies, and merchandise. Residing in Hawaii at the time of the attack on Pearl Harbour in 1941, Burroughs was drawn into the Second World War and became one of the oldest war correspondents at the time. Edgar Rice Burroughs s popularity continues to be memorialized through the community of Tarzana, California, which is named after the ranch he owned in the area, and through the Burrough crater on Mars, which was named in his honour.

A departure for ERB, has the feel of old style writing, a decent crime/mystery story By Jadecat I am a long time Burroughs fan, mainly Tarzan and his Mars series, so when I saw this one available for free on the kindle I snapped it up as I had never heard of it before. Unbeknown to me, it is the 3rd book in the Mucker series. Well, I found that out when I was 80% through the book, and I suppose it might have made the main character, Bridge, a little more understandable. Truthfully, if I had known it was the 3rd book, I wouldn't have read it, but now that I finished it, it really didn't matter. The book starts off with a bang, but you don't have much background information, so you slowly figure out who the people are as you go along. The book is the story of Bridge, a self proclaimed tramp/hobo, who comes across different people in one night and tries to help some and tries to protect others. It involves a haunted house, gypsies, bears and a variety of criminals and country folk. It is a crime story that gets solved in the last few pages. I think the storyline occurs over a span of 2 to 3 days. The style of writing gives the book an old feel to it, but I suppose it should. Not my favorite novel of ERB's, but it is a good story and goes quickly. Short and sweet.

I would call this a definite departure from the usual ERB fare in some ways, and in others more of the same. The style is much like everything else Burroughs wrote, however, rather than the exotic locales of Mars, Venus or the African jungle we are treated to a story from the American heartland.Bridge from the Mucker returns, making this somewhat of a sequel or spin-off. The story is predictable, but still fun to read. This is a definite period piece, from the settings to the characters to the dialog. Burroughs even gives us a gypsy. This one is just fun to read.P-)

However, this version of the book is incomplete. The previous reviewer stated the book jumped right into the action with no back story. That is because this version is missing the first several pages. I happened to have two versions on my Droid Kindle app. and accidentally switched to this version after starting the other. The other version is the complete Mucker trillogy for $0.99. Well worth the price for three very good books. If you want free, this version of the book will stand on it's own minus the back story, but if the back story is important to you, get the full version.

On the eve of World War II, the Saint is in Vienna, where his attentions are divided between a sensuous countess and some legendary diamonds - both of which he is trying to keep out of Nazi hands.

Leslie Charteris was born in Singapore and moved to England in 1919. He left Cambridge University early when his first novel was accepted for publication. He wrote novels about the Saint throughout his life, becoming one of the 20th century's most prolific and popular authors.

Although I was able to figure out one of the Unholy Ones right away, this still had a lot of surprises that kept me engaged.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Connected Chronology and Bible Understaning By JMichael Few moderns have the patience to read this book, much less write it. The author, Samuel Schuckman had such patience, and produces a volume that takes one patient bite at a time. Offhand, he connects biblical references to reasonable secular historical time-lines. In doing so, he answers searching questions about ancient pagan and modern religious beliefs. i.e., "Where did the idea of deifying Man get its credible start with brilliant ancients?" The key feature seems to be the chronological gap created by Noah's Flood, and the obviously stimulating chronology of Genesis 5, with its interlocking time-data for the first ten generations after Adam. I love it. I think a searching student of biblical records, anchored as they are by the doctrine of infallibility, drives a peg for measurable progress in historical, philosophical, spiritual, and theological knowledge. Wish we could talk about it! Have fun. I did, and I'm buying this volume pronto!
