In the home of Jonas Prim, president of an Oakdale bank, a thief makes off with a servant's clothing and valuables belonging to Prim's daughter Abigail. Abigail is thought to be absent visiting Sam Benham, whom her parents want her to marry. Escaping, the thief later encounters a group of hobos and is taken for one of them, the Oskaloosa Kid. Two of the hobos attempt to murder the newcomer for the loot, who shoots at one and flees. Meanwhile, the Prims discover the theft and learn that Abigail never arrived at Benham's. The incidents are assumed to be connected to other crimes, the assault and robbery of John Baggs and the murder of Reginald Paynter, who had been seen with two men and a girl. The local paper speculates Abigail might have been involved with Paynter's murder. Mr. Prim hires a private eye. The thief encounters another vagrant, Bridge, and the two take refuge from a storm in the deserted Squibb house, site of an old murder. Nearby, a shot is heard from a passing car, from which a woman is thrown. The two take the unconscious woman into the house. There they discover a dead body and hear something in the cellar dragging a chain. They lock themselves in one of the rooms. The woman, reviving, reveals herself as the girl with Paynter. The other men in the car were Terry, the driver, and the Oskaloosa Kid. She says the Kid murdered Paynter and afterwards threw her from the car and shot at her when she wouldn't keep quiet.

About the Author Edgar Rice Burroughs (1875-1950) is the creator of Tarzan, one of the most popular fictional characters of all time, and John Carter, hero of the Barsoom science fiction series. Burroughs was a prolific author, writing almost 70 books before his death in 1950, and was one of the first authors to popularize a character across multiple media, as he did with Tarzan s appearance in comic strips, movies, and merchandise. Residing in Hawaii at the time of the attack on Pearl Harbour in 1941, Burroughs was drawn into the Second World War and became one of the oldest war correspondents at the time. Edgar Rice Burroughs s popularity continues to be memorialized through the community of Tarzana, California, which is named after the ranch he owned in the area, and through the Burrough crater on Mars, which was named in his honour.

A departure for ERB, has the feel of old style writing, a decent crime/mystery story By Jadecat I am a long time Burroughs fan, mainly Tarzan and his Mars series, so when I saw this one available for free on the kindle I snapped it up as I had never heard of it before. Unbeknown to me, it is the 3rd book in the Mucker series. Well, I found that out when I was 80% through the book, and I suppose it might have made the main character, Bridge, a little more understandable. Truthfully, if I had known it was the 3rd book, I wouldn't have read it, but now that I finished it, it really didn't matter. The book starts off with a bang, but you don't have much background information, so you slowly figure out who the people are as you go along. The book is the story of Bridge, a self proclaimed tramp/hobo, who comes across different people in one night and tries to help some and tries to protect others. It involves a haunted house, gypsies, bears and a variety of criminals and country folk. It is a crime story that gets solved in the last few pages. I think the storyline occurs over a span of 2 to 3 days. The style of writing gives the book an old feel to it, but I suppose it should. Not my favorite novel of ERB's, but it is a good story and goes quickly. Short and sweet.

I would call this a definite departure from the usual ERB fare in some ways, and in others more of the same. The style is much like everything else Burroughs wrote, however, rather than the exotic locales of Mars, Venus or the African jungle we are treated to a story from the American heartland.Bridge from the Mucker returns, making this somewhat of a sequel or spin-off. The story is predictable, but still fun to read. This is a definite period piece, from the settings to the characters to the dialog. Burroughs even gives us a gypsy. This one is just fun to read.P-)

However, this version of the book is incomplete. The previous reviewer stated the book jumped right into the action with no back story. That is because this version is missing the first several pages. I happened to have two versions on my Droid Kindle app. and accidentally switched to this version after starting the other. The other version is the complete Mucker trillogy for $0.99. Well worth the price for three very good books. If you want free, this version of the book will stand on it's own minus the back story, but if the back story is important to you, get the full version.
