How was I to have known a simple question asked by an inquisitive young Grandson would rekindle a long postponed dream and start a cascade of ruminations on war, marriage, working class conflicts and boat building? "Grampa, what is that thing hanging up there?" "A boat I've been building for a long time," I said. "Why don't you bring it down and work on it?” My Grandson asked. Looking into his deep brown eyes I realized I could not intellectualize these questions away. His curious questions troubled me deeply. I lowered the unfinished hull the next day but, it was months before I could begin to fathom how many interwoven and unresolved remnants of my life would crop up as I dragged out the tattered boat building blueprints, dusty cedar boards and tarnished bronze screws and fasteners. This story details the interwoven threads of building a classic small wooden boat with the ways life experience, relationships and personal change come together. In the end they all make this boat building project more of an adventure than the author ever expected.

A stirring and heartfelt memoir about life, love, determination, dreams, and building a boat.As soon as I began reading, I was swept away by Paul Marshall's adventurous spirit and longing for the something more (often manifested by the sea). The story begins with an innocent question asked by the author's grandson, and then takes readers on a journey that seeks to answer that question. We follow Paul as he wanders lost in the Philippines, an unwilling part of the U.S. Navy, and then as he wanders lost in his old hometown after the war. Drawn by the ocean, he finds excitement and purpose in his dream of building a boat. As he works on his project, he learns about boat-building, but he also learns about who he is and the life he has lived over the years. The ending is one of peaceful triumph, like a boat setting sail on a calm tide.Quotes, poetry, and photographs interspersed throughout the narrative give the story context and life. The voice is strong and compelling, and the story fascinating. Recommended especially for those who hold the sea close to their hearts.

Great job exploring a young man's questioning past in light of building a more mature emotional outlook in conjunction with the physical building of a beautiful boat. I really enjoyed reading the juxtaposition of all of the elements of raw emotions, realizations, physical labor, boat building calculations and the final "sea change" resolution. Really an exciting read for all who have realized the expansive nature of the sea and the resultant emotional tranquility.

We learn a thing or two about building a boat, but more about the bright, life-experienced writerwho finally put his dream afloat! Inspired, yet, by a grandson's question. His candor and gratitude refreshed this reader. Thank you, Mr. Marshall.
