About the Author Dr. Palm, a retired New York City psychologist, used August each year to travel with her husband to many countries in Europe and Asia. Why did they never go to Germany? Why did they route their trips not to land at a German airport? These questions haunted her and kept her from dealing with her feelings about Germany. She joined an organization called Generations After, a group of adult children of Holocaust survivors in Phoenix, Arizona. The group members shared their stories of growing up with parents who had survived the Holocaust. Dr. Palm was born in Newark, New Jersey, months before the Nazis deported her grandparents from Germany to Poland. Gratefully, when she was eight years old and the war was over, the family was reunited. Friends and family visited and the harrowing stories of their survival were told and retold. Dr. Palm began to understand how her parents’ fears of Germany were transmitted to her. She was then able to research the stories about the Holocaust she had heard when she was a child and to travel to Germany to follow her family’s footsteps before, during and after the war. Dr. Palm is the author of the memoir titled Put That Knife Away - Alzheimer’s, Marriage and My Transformation from Wife to Caregiver. She divides her time between New York City and Mesa, Arizona.

Inspiring story By Sandra The author’s grandparents fled the Nazis and travelled from Germany to Poland to Uzbekistan and eventually to America to become US Citizens . The story takes place from the 1930”s to the 1960’s. Adolph, the grandfather, was in the burlap business and earlier he and his wife Eva sent their three children out of Germany in response to anti-Semitic laws. Given two hours to vacate their apartment they make their long journey primarily on foot, living in the forest and scrounging for food from farmers. The author describes her mother’s anguish not knowing her parents whereabouts for several years all the while sending food packages to their last address in Frankfurt. Interwoven is the story of the author who grew up in New Jersey and had to deal as a youngster with the charged emotional climate of the household affected by relatives involved in the Holocaust. Detailed definitions of German words, maps and questions for discussions add to the reader’s understanding of the events. The title alludes to the artifacts that played a role in the grandparents’ survival and adds to the concept of luck so important in this and everyone’s story. Even those who are not directly or indirectly involved with the Holocaust will find the couple’s story inspiring.

I felt as though Phyllis took me along on herjourney. I saw all the places she visited and the people she met along the way. I read the book in the evening as I was sitting in bed,I do my best reading at that time, when I'm relaxed. I found myself looking forward to going to bed, so I could continue on the journey.Keep up the good work, my friend.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. A page-turner...captures the experience of living through WWII By Karen Greenberg-Perkus I think it's a wonderful book. It's filled with such warmth and concern for all the people in it. I'm learning all about German-Jewish family life, the close attachment of relatives, the role of the father, what upper middle class life was like, and of course the harrowing experiences of the author's grandparents during WWII. It's a real page-turner, and Dr. Palm clearly extracted the essentials of their experience.
