Out of the Rabbit Hole is a memoir, written from a child's point of view, of a little girl who manages to survive an environment of alcoholism and violence. She finds escape in the world of movies and records. Starting at age three, being left alone becomes the norm; by four, the movie theater becomes her babysitter. As she grows, so do her views and observations that enable her to climb Out of the Rabbit Hole into the real world with insight and solidity. In Out of the Rabbit Hole, a beautifully written memoir, Kathy Wilson describes a life that would undo most children. That she came through it at all is a wonder. Having written about it so powerfully is a testament to both her character and her talent. You won’t be able to put it down. ―Cathi Stoler, author of The Hard Way Kathy Wilson’s Out of the Rabbit Hole is a harrowing tale of family dysfunction, set against the backdrop of post-Depression-era America. It’s about what it’s like, viscerally, to be raised in a culture of family violence and alcoholism. Ultimately, it recounts one woman’s recovery of her own life and reintegration into the world. This book heals. ―Frazier Russell, author of Lush Kathy Wilson’s Out of the Rabbit Hole is a wonderful coming of age story. Beautifully written, poignant, sensitive and with attention to detail, it evokes the sights, smells and sounds of the 1940s and 1950s. I loved every page. ―Hannah S. Hess, author of Honest Deceptions

By Conrad Hamanaka Amazon-Out of the Rabbit Hole is an honest and moving account of a young girl’s early years in New Jersey during World War II and the early 1950’s in a dysfunctional family, where her mother was an alcoholic and her father was physically abusive. Her mother had theatrical ambitions until she got pregnant out of wedlock. She married the author’s father, a talented chef and a restauranteur. After suffering physical abuse at the hands of her new husband, she started drinking and never stopped. The author is half Lithuanian and half Italian, and the book has revealing details of both cultures (this is one of the few memoires of women from the tristate area). Ms. Wilson’s sensitive depiction of nature, family life (even providing several recipes!) and customs of her parents’ relatives provides a heart warming read. Her memoire shows the interior life of an artistic little girl who was often neglected, forced to fend for herself, and despite all odds, developed into a strong, loving mother herself. Most of us survive childhood traumas with the support of our parents. This is not so for the millions of neglected children of parents with substance abuse problems. Their chances roll with the dice, and this memoire is an eye opening work, full of impactful, dramatic insight and scenes.

By Silvia Luna Out of the Rabbit Hole is a non fiction memoir written with the fascinated characteristics of a fiction book. The author has the ability to describe the entire world around her childhood, that as a reader, I could picture her in my mind. I could see her in every detailed scenario she presents, and around everyone involve in the story. I could see her growing older in her own world of fantasy and reality. The subject of the story is dramatic and traumatic, but the author exposes it in a such of sensible and lovely way that, the reader at the end does not end up with the taste of anger, frustration and sadness usually provide by those books of child abandonment, and child abuse, and dis functional families. The postscript of the book give a slight view of what became the life of the girl in the book. I wonder if the author has in mind a second book telling us the story of the woman who overcome the very particular childhood described in Out of the Rabbit Hole.Silvia Luna

Kathy is more concerned about her loved ones than she is about her own circumstances By Marie What impressed me most about this book is Kathy's ability to forgive. She loves unconditionally and is able to move forward in life despite incredible odds. Kathy is more concerned about her loved ones than she is about her own circumstances. Other children experiencing the childhood that Kathy describes may become bitter, and engage in negative behaviors. Kathy is a dedicated sister and daughter and writes her story with insight and strength. I recommend this book for readers who want to experience another person's life without becoming judgmental.
