About the Author Zane Kotker has published four novels: Bodies in Motion, A Certain Man, White Rising and Try To Remember. She has won a fiction grant from the National Endowment for the Arts and enjoyed residences at the MacDowell Colony and Yaddo. She and her late husband Norman Kotker left Manhattan for western Massachusetts in 1978 with their two children, now grown.

A Quiet but Powerful Book By jvonhartz This is a stealth book that creeps up on readers and leaves them with a series of vivid memories and experiences, Although I'm familiar with Ms. Kotker's writing, I had missed this book when it was first published. Not to worry. I read it in the Kindle edition and it was a fresh revelation.Set in the 70s, the story is as relevant today as it was then. In this case a wife and mother's scratching for time to write while being faithful to domestic duties that seem to fall automatically on a married woman. But this is not just a tale of the struggle for artistic expression. It is a thorough examination of a life under a very common form of pressure, one that is not always related with such telling points. It's the accumulation of detail that distinguishes this work, the cumulative affect of which is to leave the reader feeling satisfied while still wishing for more. This may have been labeled a "feminist novel" when it first appeared. But it is clear now that *universal experience" is a truer label. Ms.Kotker is a highly skilled practitioner and that is the only category that counts.

When I re read the book recently it brought back so many memories of being a young mother in the late 60's and early 70's. The claustrophobic world of the 60's housewife caught between child rearing and her artistic outlet is rendered beautifully...and is as relevant today as it was then. Woman are as caught between work and motherhood maybe in different ways then the 60's and 70's, but the question today reads "can women have it all" expressing the same dilemma..

I still own my old copy, which I loved, and now I can give it as gifts, especially to new mothers. It's set a generation ago, but none of the important things have changed: the same dramas in the playground and the bedroom, the same humor and truths, the same difficulties and joys.NS
