London has lost nothing in power. He has gained in sweetness. There is something brutally strong in Martin Eden. Then there is a gentler background. Someone says Martin is London's self. Maybe in part. Maybe wholly. Martin Eden is concretely explicit and yet potently symbolistic. Here was a man who undertook to civilize himself and only half succeeded. And here also a woman who undertook to uncivilize herself, only half succeeded. How the spirit grew in Martin, and how the flesh grew in Ruth, will bear looked at frankly from both sides.Notice: This Book is published by Historical Books Limited (www.publicdomain.org.uk) as a Public Domain Book, if you have any inquiries, requests or need any help you can just send an email to publications@publicdomain.org.uk This book is found as a public domain and free book based on various online catalogs, if you think there are any problems regard copyright issues please contact us immediately via DMCA@publicdomain.org.uk

From the Inside Flap Martin Eden, Jack London's semiautobiographical novel about a struggling young writer, is considered by many to be the author's most mature work. Personifying London's own dreams of education and literary fame as a young man in San Francisco, Martin Eden's impassioned but ultimately ineffective battle to overcome his bleak circumstances makes him one of the most memorable and poignant characters Jack London ever created. As Paul Berman points out in his Introduction, "In Martin, [London] created one of the great twisted heroes of American literature . . . a hero doomed from the outset because his own passions are bigger and more complicated than any man could bear."

A Neglected American Classic of Weight and Depth By oh_pete MARTIN EDEN follows the rise and fall of a young sailor who by sheer force of will educates himself and succeeds in becoming a famous writer (this is London's autobiographical novel, published in 1909, when he was thirty-three and the most popular living writer in the world). Few readers liked it then, they found it dark and depressing after a certain point; they wanted the entertainment they were used to from London ("Come on, Jack, give us another story with dogs and snow in it!"). Not as many read it now as should, and London himself disdained the fact that it inspired many young writers without talent to follow Martin Eden's example. But it is also a valuable story about a young man maturing in his conception of love as regards the opposite sex:"Ambition soared on mad wings, and he saw himself climbing the heights with her, pleasuring in beautiful and noble things with her. It was a soul-possession he dreamed, refined beyond any grossness, a free comradeship of spirit that he could not put into definite thought." -- The youth becomes a man.London's prose is straightforward and vibrant, much like the author at his best. Martin Eden falls victim to the vicissitudes of his fame and fortune, much like the author at his worst (too much hard living is often given as the reason for London's death at forty). London spends a lot of time in this book criticizing American materialism in the way that materialism ought to be criticized. He also displays a certain kind of American work ethic (five hours of sleep a night, perseverance through failure, etc.) that sometimes doesn't know what to do with itself once it achieves success. We should all have that problem--just hope that we deal with it better than young Martin Eden does. A very worthwhile read.

Although I don't find the excitement within that was apparent in "Sea Wolf," the passion is certainly evident. I have read that "Martin Eden" inspired more bad writers to sequester themselves with paper and pencil in unheated attics than any other book, and it is easy to determine why. Eden's obsession with learning and then creating the immortal printed word -- after falling for a woman above his class in society/socialist-conscious San Francisco -- is a powerful force that London expounds convincingly. Then, without warning, the sage advice "be careful what you wish for, it may come true," rears its ugly head. London also includes a line about ghosts that should be a classic, but isn't, and his description of a suicide ranks as the best of its kind. A WORD OF WARNING: Do not read the foreward until after. It tells too much of the story and robs some of the author's intended suprises. This is unforgivable. May the publisher rot in hell.

27 of 30 people found the following review helpful. Martin Eden: A Journey into the Interior By A Customer If you are looking for pleasant summer reading, pass this one by. It ain't pretty and it ain't pleasant, but it ranks as one of the Great American novels of all time. Was it autobiographical? You betcha. More so than most airbrushed autobiographies of our time. Jack London was the first author to awaken in me the love of the printed word. I was 9 years old. The title that awakened me was Call of the Wild. I, like Marcia and everyone else, thought that Jack London was just an aborigine, wandering around in the vast metropolis and utterly lost. Years later I read The Sea Wolf, and my opinion changed.I no longer thought of Jack as an aborigine, but as a refined young man, rudely abducted from the civilized world and forced to accept the law of the strongest. Later still, I read Martin Eden, and I was devastated by the tortured visions of that same young man who was tranfigured by that experience and who was no longer acceptable as a member of civilized society. There's a whole lot of bitterness in Martin Eden, folks! And, the more I read of Jack's life, the more I am convinced that it is autobiographical. The fact is that Jack became a monster. At the same time, he became the most successul novelist of his time. In terms of money, we can only gasp at the financial success he enjoyed. He turned out novel after novel, and each of them was gobbled up by a hungry public. In the end, the SAME PEOPLE who had rejected him because of his crude mannerisms and calloused knuckles sought him out because of his MONEY. Do you really want the brutal truth about Jack London? And are you really prepared to weep for one of America's great sons? If so, then read Martin Eden. Otherwise, pass it by.

As revolution rocks the nation of Costaguana, the seemingly incorruptible Nostromo is entrusted with the safekeeping and international sale of silver from his employer’s mine. But when the boat transporting Nostromo and his cargo is sunk by rebels, Nostromo’s decision to hide the silver on a deserted island comes to haunt him for the remainder of his life.

Nostromo, by Joseph Conrad

From Library Journal This involved, philosophical novel is not for the casual listener, especially one who is supposed to be concentrating on the road ahead. Writing in 1904, Conrad invented a complex South American country with a turbulent history and a potentially explosive population, ranging from the wealthy gringo running the Sulaco silver mine to the poorest worker loading cargo on the docks. Although the story teems with lively characters, the dazzling figure of Nostromo eclipses them all. A natural leader?brave, handsome, and incorruptible?he naturally becomes the epicenter of the revolution that soon devastates Sulaco. With characteristic eloquence, Conrad has focused on the dramatic action of the revolution to explore challenging themes: capitalism, imperialism, revolution, and social justice. Unfortunately, this audio program, read by Frederick Davidson, is disappointing. Despite fine dramatic characterizations, the narrator's posh British accent is so pronounced that it often detracts from the text. Since Nostromo has also been narrated by Frank Muller (Recorded Books) and Wolfram Kandinsky (Books on TapeR), perhaps this version may not be the best choice.?Jo Carr, Sarasota, Fla.Copyright 1997 Reed Business Information, Inc.

Review

“Ruth Nadelhaft’s new edition of Nostromo is a timely addition to the Broadview Editions series. Without neglecting the traditional critical and biographical approaches, the supplementary materials and lucid introduction place Conrad’s difficult masterpiece fully and clearly within its contemporary contexts (especially the events surrounding the Panama Canal project), and in relation to our own debates about imperialism, colonials, and alleged racism in Conrad’s work. Broadview’s Nostromo, like its companion volumes, is truly a text for the way we teach now.” ― David Latané Jr., Virginia Commonwealth University

“Nadelhaft negotiates the impasse between existential and political responses to the book. In reaffirming that the personal is the political, she demonstrates how Nostromo represents the process whereby ‘imperialism transmits the virus of alienation.’ Joined with the historical apparatus so characteristic of Broadview Editions, such theorizing genuinely reopens a book that hasn’t yet received its due.” ― Michael Coyle, Colgate University

48 of 50 people found the following review helpful. "Costaguana will always be run by butchers and tyrants." By Mary Whipple Often regarded as Conrad's masterwork, Nostromo is also Conrad's darkest novel, filled with betrayals at all levels and offering little hope for man's redemption. A novel of huge scope and political intrigue, it is also a novel in which no character actually wins. All must accept the ironies which fate has dealt them. Setting the novel in the imaginary South American country of Costaguana, the story centers around a silver mine in the mountains outside of the capital, Sulaco, vividly depicting its allure and the price each character pays for its success. When Charles Gould, returns from England to claim and reopen the rich silver mine he has inherited from his father, he has good intentions-- to provide jobs for the peasants and contribute to the economy of the town at the same time that he also profits. Soon, however, he becomes obsessed with wealth and power, and as the political climate gets hotter, he must pay off government officials, bandits, the church, and various armed revolutionaries to be able to work. Each of these groups is vividly depicted as working for its own ends and not for the good of the people, and with their goals focused on the real world, these characters have no self-awareness, nor do they develop it during the novel. In contrast to these "unrealized" humans, Conrad presents several characters who develop some self-awareness through their experiences. Nostromo, a local legend, is a man of principle who has always kept his word. Martin Decoud, a newspaper man, is a nihilist who has editorialized against the revolution, though he has yet to test himself. Dr. Monygham, captured during a past revolution, broke under torture, and is now seeking absolution by fighting against this revolution. And the good and long-suffering wife of Charles Gould, Dona Emilia, who has lost her husband to his silver mine, now devotes her life to helping others. When Nostromo agrees to protect a load of silver from revolutionaries by taking it out to sea, he takes Decoud with him, leaving him on an island with the silver when they almost sink. Decoud's reaction to his isolation, and Nostromo's reaction to the treasure that is suddenly "his," provide a dark commentary on idealism and human nature. In the conclusion, which includes a love story that feels tacked on, Conrad's darkest self is revealed, offering little hope of change and even less hope for man's redemption. Rich in atmosphere, vibrant in description, filled with characters representing all walks of life and philosophy, and set in a country where revolution is a way of life, the novel is full of dark portents and bleak political outcomes. Mary Whipple

58 of 65 people found the following review helpful. masterwork from a master writer By Bruce Kendall Conrad is my favorite 20th century author, so I am biased. The reviewer who compared him to Tolstoy was on the money. Both lived lives that gave them fodder for their fiction; Tolstoy as a soldier in the Crimean war, an aristocrat facing the turbulence of the political and social upheavals of fin-de-siecle Russia, and Conrad as a mariner and a Polish transplant who carved out a language and a career for himself in England. Nostromo contains some of the most vividly realized characterization, plot, and sensory detail of any novel ever written in the English language, period. Do not pay any attention to a customer whose review is based on listening to the audio tape version. It doesn't do the book justice and is indeed labored to the extreme. I would also hope that readers do not form their opinions from the BBC film. It is infinitely shallow by comparison to this rich work. While the "eponymous" character remains purposefully enigmatic, the other inhabitants of Costaguena are stereoscopically fleshed out. We are on intimate terms with the Goulds. We know Decoud's innermost thoughts. It's true that Decoud is the central character of this novel. His isolation and mental defragmentation is Conrad's arguement for and refuation of existentialism. We are all islands, yet no man is in island. Take your pick. This is a very large piece of fiction. Do not approch it as you would some best seller. It's not going to entertain you on every page. What it will do is reward you in riches that can never come cheaply. Yet it is not like Finnegan's Wake, where you have to have your Boedekker's guide to see you along your journey. It's also a great adventure story, with a larger than life hero. If I could suggest one book to represent the most finely crafted novel of its era, this would be it.

15 of 16 people found the following review helpful. A story of the silver coast By A.J. Joseph Conrad is one of the most effortlessly cosmopolitan writers in the English language, and "Nostromo" finds him in a fictitious South American country called Costaguana whose mountains are a bountiful resource of silver. And Conrad is probably the only writer who can transform his novel's hero from an all-around tough guy to a heroic savior to a sneaky thief to a tragic victim of mistaken identity through plausible twists of fate without ever letting the story fall into disarray. The main action of the novel takes place towards the end of the nineteenth century in a town called Sulaco, which is the base of operations for the San Tome silver mine up in the nearby mountains. The administrator of the mine is an Englishman named Charles Gould, whose primary challenge is to find American and European speculators to invest money to keep the mine in business. The other problem he faces is a civil war between the present government and a faction of rebels led by a general named Montero. Gould's wife Emilia is a prominent figure in town, an elegant matron with a philanthropic attitude towards the downtrodden native mine workers and townspeople. The hero, Nostromo, is an Italian sailor who settled in Costaguana for more lucrative work and is now in charge of keeping the dockworkers -- the "cargadores" -- in line. When Montero's troops invade Sulaco, Nostromo and Martin Decoud, an aristocratic Frenchman who runs Sulaco's newspaper, escape on a boat with the town's silver treasury to protect it from the marauders. Their boat is sideswiped and damaged by a ship commanded by a rebel colonel named Sotillo, and they are forced to moor on a nearby island and bury the treasure there. This island is the future site of a lighthouse to be maintained by the Violas, an Italian family whose patriarch, Giorgio, once supported Garibaldi and still reveres the man like a deity. There is obviously much more to the plot, too much to reveal in this review, and there are many additional important characters, but these are best left for the potential reader to discover.Narratively, Conrad keeps the story moving with plenty of action and suspense combined with the typical excellence of his prose. Structurally, though, is how Conrad's novel intrigues its reader: He frequently shifts viewpoints, in both place and time, to give the effect of different perspectives of both the immediate events and the long-term history of Sulaco. Contemporary reviewers of the novel apparently saw this technique as an artistic flaw; in retrospect, it seems well ahead of its time.Thematically, the novel presents a debate about the benefits and problems of imperialism and colonization, using Costaguano as a model colony and the Gould Concession as model imperialists. When Sotillo accuses foreigners of robbing his country of its wealth, Gould suggests to him that a country's resources (i.e., Costaguana's silver) can be used as an asset only from the cooperation of the native workers and the capital and technical knowledge of the colonists. Such a concept seems relevant to global economic development throughout the twentieth century.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. The History of San Jose By Maureen This is a great resource for anyone who wants to see how San Jose's business elite viewed San Jose's past. Written in 1870, a major focus of the work is the legal disputes over land titles in San Jose's pueblo lands. The information in it appears to be an accurate account, based on knowledge I have from archival sources. It is a valuable source in gauging the voice of boosterism as San Jose moved from town to city.

Bodies in Motion takes us back to Manhattan’s Upper West Side and a culture just beginning to crack, as women dared to want more than the standard choice—children or career. Young, single Sonya works as a science photographer for children’s books and lives in a fanciful world of her own observation. She marries the appealing but sometimes oblivious Victor. Soon Peter is born. At first mother and baby wheel contentedly about the “glens and shadowy places” of nearby Riverside Park. As her son learns to walk, Sonya takes him into a playground to be socialized. Here natural forces and social customs reveal themselves to Sonya, though she no longer packs a camera. Olivia is born. At the sandbox Sonya notices how female and male programming appear and are fostered. Back in her apartment she finds herself sinking into the traditional female role. Will she retain her own curious eye? Will she ever get her camera out of the closet? The culture has changed since 1972 when Bodies in Motion was first published, but the work of raising children remains the same.

A Quiet but Powerful Book By jvonhartz This is a stealth book that creeps up on readers and leaves them with a series of vivid memories and experiences, Although I'm familiar with Ms. Kotker's writing, I had missed this book when it was first published. Not to worry. I read it in the Kindle edition and it was a fresh revelation.Set in the 70s, the story is as relevant today as it was then. In this case a wife and mother's scratching for time to write while being faithful to domestic duties that seem to fall automatically on a married woman. But this is not just a tale of the struggle for artistic expression. It is a thorough examination of a life under a very common form of pressure, one that is not always related with such telling points. It's the accumulation of detail that distinguishes this work, the cumulative affect of which is to leave the reader feeling satisfied while still wishing for more. This may have been labeled a "feminist novel" when it first appeared. But it is clear now that *universal experience" is a truer label. Ms.Kotker is a highly skilled practitioner and that is the only category that counts.

When I re read the book recently it brought back so many memories of being a young mother in the late 60's and early 70's. The claustrophobic world of the 60's housewife caught between child rearing and her artistic outlet is rendered beautifully...and is as relevant today as it was then. Woman are as caught between work and motherhood maybe in different ways then the 60's and 70's, but the question today reads "can women have it all" expressing the same dilemma..

I still own my old copy, which I loved, and now I can give it as gifts, especially to new mothers. It's set a generation ago, but none of the important things have changed: the same dramas in the playground and the bedroom, the same humor and truths, the same difficulties and joys.NS

Kazakhstan – a country of extremes, of both culture and weather. This is an account of one person’s experience, coping with living and working in a strange environment where normal, day to day activities can turn out to be monumental in their execution and where any comfort zones are hard to find! My experiences far exceeded any expectations or anticipations I had had and I had to draw on reserves I never knew I even possessed. I describe living conditions and the difficulties I encountered both in the workplace – a drug treatment centre – and in forming relationships. I found myself caught up in a court case in which one of my interpreters had been charged with possession of illegal substances ( namely heroin). Having broken my arm I had the dubious privilege of intimate knowledge of a Kazakhstani hospital, and ended my year in a wild, isolated and basic farmhouse on the borders of Kazakhstan, Russia and China.

By Amazon Customer The reader is carried along with the author in this fascinating but challenging country and many times wonders why she stayed the course with all that was thrown at her. The images of the people and the country are so vivid that you almost feel you are there. Her bravery in the face of adversity in a country where few speak anything other than Russian, and her determination to try to use her skills to help those caught up in the horrors of drug addiction in the face of constant rebuff and incompetent and even corrupt management is to be praised. A thoroughly enjoyable and lively read made the more so from the comfort of the readers own home!

The Key, the Turtle and the Bottle of Schnapps: in honor of my parents and grandparents who survived the Holocaust, by Phyllis W. Palm PhD

About the Author Dr. Palm, a retired New York City psychologist, used August each year to travel with her husband to many countries in Europe and Asia. Why did they never go to Germany? Why did they route their trips not to land at a German airport? These questions haunted her and kept her from dealing with her feelings about Germany. She joined an organization called Generations After, a group of adult children of Holocaust survivors in Phoenix, Arizona. The group members shared their stories of growing up with parents who had survived the Holocaust. Dr. Palm was born in Newark, New Jersey, months before the Nazis deported her grandparents from Germany to Poland. Gratefully, when she was eight years old and the war was over, the family was reunited. Friends and family visited and the harrowing stories of their survival were told and retold. Dr. Palm began to understand how her parents’ fears of Germany were transmitted to her. She was then able to research the stories about the Holocaust she had heard when she was a child and to travel to Germany to follow her family’s footsteps before, during and after the war. Dr. Palm is the author of the memoir titled Put That Knife Away - Alzheimer’s, Marriage and My Transformation from Wife to Caregiver. She divides her time between New York City and Mesa, Arizona.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Inspiring story By Sandra The author’s grandparents fled the Nazis and travelled from Germany to Poland to Uzbekistan and eventually to America to become US Citizens . The story takes place from the 1930”s to the 1960’s. Adolph, the grandfather, was in the burlap business and earlier he and his wife Eva sent their three children out of Germany in response to anti-Semitic laws. Given two hours to vacate their apartment they make their long journey primarily on foot, living in the forest and scrounging for food from farmers. The author describes her mother’s anguish not knowing her parents whereabouts for several years all the while sending food packages to their last address in Frankfurt. Interwoven is the story of the author who grew up in New Jersey and had to deal as a youngster with the charged emotional climate of the household affected by relatives involved in the Holocaust. Detailed definitions of German words, maps and questions for discussions add to the reader’s understanding of the events. The title alludes to the artifacts that played a role in the grandparents’ survival and adds to the concept of luck so important in this and everyone’s story. Even those who are not directly or indirectly involved with the Holocaust will find the couple’s story inspiring.

I felt as though Phyllis took me along on herjourney. I saw all the places she visited and the people she met along the way. I read the book in the evening as I was sitting in bed,I do my best reading at that time, when I'm relaxed. I found myself looking forward to going to bed, so I could continue on the journey.Keep up the good work, my friend.

It's filled with such warmth and concern for all the people in it. I'm learning all about German-Jewish family life, the close attachment of relatives, the role of the father, what upper middle class life was like, and of course the harrowing experiences of the author's grandparents during WWII. It's a real page-turner, and Dr. Palm clearly extracted the essentials of their experience.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. A Beautiful Operatic Novel By hereswhatithink WOW...This is an amazing book. I can't do it justice or even put into words how good it is.As the title suggests, this is a story of Signa, an illigitimate orphan boy who is saved from death during a flood when he is about one year old. His two uncles find him clinging to the breast of his dead mother, and, afraid that the villagers might accuse the two brothers of murder, (its a long story), they let the floodwaters take her body away and tell everyone they found the unknown baby alone in the field. The boy is raised by his Uncle Lippo's family who mistreat him. But bruises can do no lasting harm to Signa for his head is in the clouds where the very angels whisper sweet music to him. He hears it in the wind, in the rustling apricot trees, the grapevines and the hills. While singing his songs or playing his lute he is content. Then one day he sees an old violin for sale in a shop window and asks to hold it ....Call him a protege, a genius, an artist, it makes no difference; for music is the very lifeblood and soul of Signa. But his kind uncle Bruno is deaf to Signa's genius. To him it is merely child's play and so Bruno slaves for nine years, building Signa a future there in the Tuscan hills, farming. When Signa kindly rejects his uncle's plans for him, Bruno stomps on Signa's prized violin, destroying it.There is so much more to this story. There are his childhood playmates, one kind and good peasant girl named Palma and her beautiful but selfish sister Gemma (whom Signa loves). Palma grows up, slaving for her father and idle brothers, never complaining, while Gemma runs away at age 10, seeking a life of luxury ...The story covers about 25 years so you learn what comes of all these characters and how their lives intertwine for good and for bad as well as the extremely high cost of fame.In many ways this book feels like an opera put into novel form and has an almost tragic fairytale cadence. Its beautifully poetic and emotive and while it doesn't neccesarily have a HEA, the story had some surprising twists and turns that were brilliantly thought out and I was ultimately satisfied. It really could only have ended in the way it did. Its opera, afterall. And I love it.Recommended for lovers of chunky, old fashioned, flowery, melodramatic reads.* Signa is available for free on Openlibrary but I suggest paying the $2.99 for this particular version on Amazon. The Openlibrary epub version is so riddled with typos it is almost unreadable. If buying the antique book (have fun with that!) be careful you're buying the complete 512 page book as it was often split into three volumes.

Out of the Rabbit Hole is a memoir, written from a child's point of view, of a little girl who manages to survive an environment of alcoholism and violence. She finds escape in the world of movies and records. Starting at age three, being left alone becomes the norm; by four, the movie theater becomes her babysitter. As she grows, so do her views and observations that enable her to climb Out of the Rabbit Hole into the real world with insight and solidity. In Out of the Rabbit Hole, a beautifully written memoir, Kathy Wilson describes a life that would undo most children. That she came through it at all is a wonder. Having written about it so powerfully is a testament to both her character and her talent. You won’t be able to put it down. ―Cathi Stoler, author of The Hard Way Kathy Wilson’s Out of the Rabbit Hole is a harrowing tale of family dysfunction, set against the backdrop of post-Depression-era America. It’s about what it’s like, viscerally, to be raised in a culture of family violence and alcoholism. Ultimately, it recounts one woman’s recovery of her own life and reintegration into the world. This book heals. ―Frazier Russell, author of Lush Kathy Wilson’s Out of the Rabbit Hole is a wonderful coming of age story. Beautifully written, poignant, sensitive and with attention to detail, it evokes the sights, smells and sounds of the 1940s and 1950s. I loved every page. ―Hannah S. Hess, author of Honest Deceptions

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. A memorable insightful book. By Conrad Hamanaka Amazon-Out of the Rabbit Hole is an honest and moving account of a young girl’s early years in New Jersey during World War II and the early 1950’s in a dysfunctional family, where her mother was an alcoholic and her father was physically abusive. Her mother had theatrical ambitions until she got pregnant out of wedlock. She married the author’s father, a talented chef and a restauranteur. After suffering physical abuse at the hands of her new husband, she started drinking and never stopped. The author is half Lithuanian and half Italian, and the book has revealing details of both cultures (this is one of the few memoires of women from the tristate area). Ms. Wilson’s sensitive depiction of nature, family life (even providing several recipes!) and customs of her parents’ relatives provides a heart warming read. Her memoire shows the interior life of an artistic little girl who was often neglected, forced to fend for herself, and despite all odds, developed into a strong, loving mother herself. Most of us survive childhood traumas with the support of our parents. This is not so for the millions of neglected children of parents with substance abuse problems. Their chances roll with the dice, and this memoire is an eye opening work, full of impactful, dramatic insight and scenes.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Out of the Rabbit Hole is a non fiction memoir ... By Silvia Luna Out of the Rabbit Hole is a non fiction memoir written with the fascinated characteristics of a fiction book. The author has the ability to describe the entire world around her childhood, that as a reader, I could picture her in my mind. I could see her in every detailed scenario she presents, and around everyone involve in the story. I could see her growing older in her own world of fantasy and reality. The subject of the story is dramatic and traumatic, but the author exposes it in a such of sensible and lovely way that, the reader at the end does not end up with the taste of anger, frustration and sadness usually provide by those books of child abandonment, and child abuse, and dis functional families. The postscript of the book give a slight view of what became the life of the girl in the book. I wonder if the author has in mind a second book telling us the story of the woman who overcome the very particular childhood described in Out of the Rabbit Hole.Silvia Luna

Kathy is more concerned about her loved ones than she is about her own circumstances By Marie What impressed me most about this book is Kathy's ability to forgive. She loves unconditionally and is able to move forward in life despite incredible odds. Kathy is more concerned about her loved ones than she is about her own circumstances. Other children experiencing the childhood that Kathy describes may become bitter, and engage in negative behaviors. Kathy is a dedicated sister and daughter and writes her story with insight and strength. I recommend this book for readers who want to experience another person's life without becoming judgmental.

Growing up in a very small city of Natchitoches, Louisiana, the oldest one in the Louisiana Purchase, author, Bonita Grace Moses, was not only the youngest sibling but also the only girl, along with four brothers, born to Elena Moses. She was reared by her mother and her grandmother, Georgiana Moses, in a small three-room house. In Mama Shug: the Bridge Whom We Loved So Dearly, Moses shares her life story and how it was particularly influenced by her God-fearing grandmother, affectionately known as Mama Shug, who lived to the age of ninety-eight. This memoir narrates how Mama Shug quit school at age seven to care for her siblings, but she instilled the importance of a good education in her grandchildren. Full of wisdom, Moses' grandmother also preached how faith in the Lord was central to life. She was a woman who lived what she practiced. A testament to the strength, tenacity, spirituality, and love of Mama Shug, this memoir describes the life of one woman who paved the way and provided an important foundation helping her grandchildren achieve success.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. This is not a fascimilie printing of the book of same title by Peck By Nelson A. Logan I purchased this book from Amazon.com. But, the publisher apparently got confused and this is not a reprint of the 1905 book of the same title by Harry Thurston Peck, in spite of what it says on the cover. This is a reprint of the book of the same title by Rollo Ogden which was published in 1904. However, this book complements both the original 1864 biography by George Ticknor and the 1905 book by Harry Thurston Peck. I have been an admirer of Prescott for some time and I found a number of facts about Prescott in the Ogden book that were not included in the other books. The Table of Contents given at the Amazon.com site is that of Peck's book. The TOC of Ogden's book is:I. THE CROSSED SWORDSII. SCHOOL AND COLLEGEIII. `LE TRAVAIL D'AVEIGLE"IV. THE INWARD EYEV. PREPARATIONVI. BEGINNINGVII. THE QUEST OF A THEMEVIII. FERDINAND AND ISABELLAIX. AWAKING FAMOUSX. THE MAN OF LETTERSXI. THE CONQUEST OF MEXICOXII. THE CONQUEST OF PERUXIII. THE ENGLIASH VISITXIV. PERSONAL TRAITSXV. POLITICAL SYMPHATHIESXVI. PHILIP IIXVII. THE UNFINISHED WINDOW INDEX

0 of 1 people found the following review helpful. I thought it was something different, but liked it anyway By KindleReader Since it had no real description (and no reviews) I thought it was something completely different. What this book is - is a collection of fiction shorts, or sketches. I wish it had a linked index or something, though.
