Excellent German analysis of tactics during the Great War By Terence Wynne Excellent German analysis of tactics during the Great War, translated into English in the early 1920's at Ft. Leavenworth, so the nuances of the technical terminology are captured correctly. A great antidote to anyone still under the illusion that British points of view on how the Great War was fought are representative. An excellent bridge between the pre-war field regulations and the Reichswehr-era Truppenfuehrung.

Reviews, by Oscar Wilde, Robert Baldwin Ross

About the Author Oscar Wilde was born on October 16, 1854, to the Irish nationalist and writer Speranza Wilde and the doctor William Wilde. After graduating from Oxford in 1878, Wilde moved to London, where he became notorious for his sharp wit and flamboyant style of dress. Though he was publishing plays and poems throughout the 1880s, it wasn t until the late 1880s and early 1890s that his work started to be received positively. In 1895, Oscar Wilde was tried for homosexuality and was convicted and sentenced to two years in prison. Tragically, this downfall came at the height of his career, as his plays, An Ideal Husband "and The Importance of Being Earnest, "were playing to full houses in London. He was greatly weakened by the privations of prison life, and moved to Paris after his sentence. Wilde died in a hotel room, either of syphilis or complications from ear surgery, in Paris, on November 30, 1900.

It was mined (without acknowledgement) by Richard Ellman, who included about a third of these pieces in The Artist as Critic: Critical Writings of Oscar Wilde, but he left a lot of gold in this 450 pp. mountain.Since I can't imitate Oscar Wilde's sparkling wit, may I at least imitate him in the use of plenty of quotations from whatever books are under review- be it poetry, novels, histories of Greece, biographies:A steady course of Balzac reduces our living friends to shadows, and our acquaintances to the shadows of shades. Who would care to go out to an evening party to meet Tomkins, the friend of one's boyhood, when one can sit at home with Lucien de Rubempré? It is pleasanter to have the entrée to Balzac's society than to receive cards from all the duchesses in May fair.[...]K. E. V.'s little volume is a series of poems on the Saints. Each poem is preceded by a brief biography of the Saint it celebrates--which is a very necessary precaution, as few of them ever existed. It does not display much poetic power, and such lines as these on St. Stephen,--Did ever man before so fall asleep?A cruel shower of stones his only bed,For lullaby the curses loud and deep,His covering with blood red--may be said to add another horror to martyrdom. Still it is a thoroughly well-intentioned book and eminently suitable for invalids.[...]For my own part, I must confess that it was not until I heard Sarah Bernhardt in Phèdre that I absolutely realised the sweetness of the music of Racine. As for Mr. Birrell's statement that actors have the words of literature for ever on their lips, but none of its truths engraved on their hearts, all that one can say is that, if it be true, it is a defect which actors share with the majority of literary critics.Such a rich and wide-ranging collection should not be read straight through, although there is no table of contents, indexed or otherwise- one reason I call this mountain 'solid.' Two of the best reviews (of Chuang Tzu and Walter Pater) are at the very end. A recommended supplement to the somewhat mislabeled Delphi Complete Works of Oscar Wilde (Illustrated)

It is not "some sort of novel," as another reviewer wrote. So, if you like Wilde and are interested in his occasional writing, you might very well enjoy this collection, free on Kindle.

Excerpt from The McClung Genealogy: A Genealogical and Biographical Record of the McClung Family From the Time of Their Emigration to the Year 1904Fifteen years ago I began to search for the descendants of my father's eldest uncle - James McClung. I searched eight years and a half before I succeeded in finding them. While searching for these, however, I discovered several hundred other McClungs, of whom I had never heard before. At first I had no thought of publishing the results of my research, but as time passed and the genealogical data began to accumulate, the necessity for preserving it in a more permanent form and giving it a wider circulation became apparent. The record will be found to lack uniformity, owing to the fact that my system of registration was not complete when the work began, but developed as the work proceeded. The record begins with the earliest known ancestor and traces the descendants of his eldest son down to date, then traces the descendants of the second son and then the third, and so on to the youngest. Two numbers, separated by a hyphen, precede each name. The first number represents the number of the child in the family. The second number represents the generation to which he belongs. The volume contains a record of nine generations, including the names of about 3,500 McClungs, exclusive of those who have acquired the name by marriage into the family. The length of the biographical sketches does not represent the relative merit of the individuals. Many who deserve extensive mention do not receive it because either they or their kindred have neglected my repeated requests for information concerning them. No attempt has been made either to flatter or to slander any one.The names of the various branches are chosen arbitrarily. They are neither inclusive nor exclusive. For example, the Pittsburgh branch does not include all the McClungs who live in Pittsburgh. On the other hand, some who belong to the Pittsburgh branch do not live in Pittsburgh or even in the State of Pennsylvania. Again, the Texas branch constitutes but a very small proportion of those bearing the name McClung who live in Texas.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. By Diana The McClung family information in this book is excellent, though I am not a geneaologist and cannot confirm information, I believe that most of it is probably reliable, as it is unlikely the author had an reason to do other than be as factual as possible. The book was written in 1904. We were thrilled to find my husband's grandparents marriage record there. This is the first time my husband has known his grandfather's correct given name - he only knew a nickname. He also learned who his great and great-great grandfathers (and further back) were and where their families are buried so that we can visit their gravesites. The hardback version of this book, which I gave my brother-in-law for his birthday, has excellent, clear copies of the manuscript's pages. This paperback version that I ordered later for my husband and his sisters does not. That is why I gave the book only 4 stars. Print is faded and very difficult to read. Though the softback's cover is very nicely done and the book's content is complete, it would be worth the additional cost to have a book that one can read more easily. If price really does deter you from getting the thirty dollars + hardback, then this book will certainly do, and you can make out the print, just be aware that it is more than a bit frustrating to read. I am going to buy my husband a hardback copy.

Crappy Printer By Pixote McClung I think my printer at the house is better than the printer that they use. & to top that there are ads in the first few pages. I will NEVER buy anything from them. The ads are NOT appropriate for a book to keep in the family.

By Sylvia Wadlington The History of the Peloponnesian War by Thucydides is a joy to read because it is so well structured and written, even though it is several thousand years old. Don't mistake this for some antique text that is full of the romantic past, if you changed the people and place names it could have been written last week. The analysis of the political problems that led to this war are so clearly and well reported by the writer that even beyond its historical value is the value of its literary quality. Today's journalists and historians would do well to study this work, if not to improve their own work or to use as an example, but for the sheer pleasure of reading something so well formed and thought out.

A Review of the Barnes & Noble Edition By QT I'm very much in agreement with the other reviewers in term of Thucydides' great writing and the timeless lessons about human nature. I will instead review this Barnes & Noble edition. B&N Classics is known for publishing old translations that are now public property or commissioning relatively unknown translators (sometimes those who have only a Master's in the field they are translating) and then having some well known specialists to either edit or write the introduction to lend some credential to the work. The translating quality might or might not be of a high caliber. This particular edition of The History of the Peloponnesian is translated by Richard Crawley. Crawley's translation is a master work. The language flows easily and fluidly. It's easy to comprehend and a joy to read. It's a modern translation so no Victorian words to stump you. You can really jump right in and read without any problem. One problem with this translation, as with most translations, is that it does not contain enough maps. Thucydides meticulously details and records each location that major or minor events took place. It's extremely necessary to have maps of these locations in order to understand their strategic significance, not only their military significance, but also what these places mean for the people who are fighting over it. It would be like studying the Nazi invasion of Russia without knowing the where Russia is, what its geographical layout looks like, and what kind of climate it has. Richard Crawley is also the translator for the "Landmark Thucydides" which is two times more expensive than this edition. That particular edition contains extensive notes and maps that will make non-experts have a true experience of Thucydides. Overall, the B&N is an excellent bare bone edition to just read. And finally, the paper quality is quite good for such an inexpensive edition. It's much better quality than Penguin or some of the other publishers out there. It will last on your shelf a lot longer than some other editions.

Cannot recommend Thucydides too highly By Marshall Lord Who should read Thucydides' History of the Peloponnesian War ?* Anyone who wants to understand how free societies can descend into tyranny:* Anyone who does not realise that merely holding free elections is not enough to preserve a society worth living in, especially if you don't combine democracy with the rule of law:* Anyone who needs to understand how two or more nations can stumble into a war devastating to both:* Anyone who imagines that genocide and ethnic cleansing were limited to our own era:* Anyone interested in reading one of the first works of true history ever written. In other words this history of a terrible war nearly two and half thousand years ago is as relevant in the first decade of the third millenium as it was when it was written, four centuries before the birth of Jesus Christ. If I had to nominate one historical work for my son and daughter to read, I would think carefully between this volume, Suetonius's "The 12 Caesars", and Herodotus's "Histories", but Thucydides "History of the Poloponnesian war" would edge it.You cannot take every word in this book for granted, but Herodotus and Thucydides came closer to an objective search for truth than any writer whose works survive and was writing before them or for centuries afterwards. The story of the tragic wars, initially between Athens and Sparta, which decimated Greek civilisation between 431BC and 404 BC is absolutely gripping, and Thucydides brings the story to life for me.The translation by Richard Crawley was written more than 130 years ago, and in some versions, slightly revised by R.C. Feetham in 1903. Despite being more than a century old, I found the translation to be accessible and easy to understand. I understand from those who know more about history than I do that Crawley's translation is now preferred by current experts to the rival Victorian translation by Benjamin Jowett which provides more of a general sense of Thucydides' writing but is less good at conveying the detail. The most irritating thing about Thucydides book is that it stops suddently in the middle of a sentence in 411 BC, shortly after the overthrow of democracy in Athens and the Athenian naval victory at the Dardanelles. E.g. well before the actual resolution of the conflict between Athens and Sparta, let alone the subsequent struggle between both cities and Thebes. If, like me, this leaves you wanting to learn more about what happened next, your best bet is to read Xenophon's "A history of my times" which was deliberately written to follow on from Thucydides, to such an extent that it actually starts with the words "And after this."The reputation of Xenophon among historians as a reliable source has fallen dramatically over the past few decades, and he is undoubtedly not in the same class as Thucydides as a historian, but he certainly is in the same class as a storyteller and he does complete the story of the war.

ON the 18th of August, 1883, his Holiness, Leo XIII, addressed a letter to Cardinals Antoninus de Luca, Vice-Chancellor, John Baptist Pitra, Librarian of the Holy Roman Church, and Joseph Hergenrother, Prefect of the Vatican Archives. In this important document, the Holy Father, knowing that many of the wide-spread evils of modern society spring not only from the abuse of philosophy and theology, but from a scarcely less fruitful source of error-ignorance or perversion of the truth of history-appeals to all, who love justice and abhor falsehood and misrepresentation, to look for the true story of the past where alone it can be found, in genuine and unadulterated records. He makes a strong protest against the injury done to the Holy See and to the Church at large by those conspirators against truth who, unmindful of the sublime mission of history, degrade the honoured name by connecting it with their idle legends and dishonest statements. To facilitate research and afford increased opportunities for the strictest inquiry, the Papal Archives, containing, among other stores of knowledge, the printed and manuscript treasures of the Vatican Library, are declared to be thrown open to all who are competent to explore such mines of historic wealth. His Holiness invites the most searching investigation, requiring but one condition to be scrupulously observed. Those who shall have access to the new sources of information must, above all things, bear in mind, "that the first duty of the historian is never to venture on a false statement; next, never to shrink from telling the truth; so that his writings may be free from all suspicion of favour or malice." The cordiality with which the Papal Letter has been received by the most intelligent organs of public opinion is very striking, and affords the consolation of finding that the love of truth, deep-seated in our nature, has not yet been eradicated even by those who have conspired against that priceless virtue. Whilst this powerful and high-toned document commanded the respect of all, it was received with admiration and delight by every loyal subject of His Holiness. The Press of every shade of political opinion, clerical, or anti-clerical, pronounced it worthy of the masterhand that penned it. Among the Catholic Prelates it awakened an echo which finds its fitting expression in the vigorous and eloquent pastoral of the late Cardinal Archbishop of Dublin. His Eminence, beyond all doubt, had special grounds of sympathy with the views of the 4th of October, 1883, of the Holy Father. He knew how history has been abused in the case of Ireland, and therefore complains that "if in search of historical information on questions connected with our country, its religion, or its relation to the Apostolic See, we consult books in general circulation, be they epitomes or volumes of pretentious form, we encounter almost in every chapter the most dishonest statements of the facts of history and of the doctrines and discipline of the Catholic Church. Long-exploded calumnies, dressed out anew, as if never refuted; authentic documents distorted, if not falsified; actions in themselves indifferent, if not to all appearances perfectly good, attributed, without a particle of justification, to motives the most criminal. Such are the materials from which is constructed the thing called history; and, on the testimony of such history, our country and our Church have suffered the direst wrongs."

An older book, full to the brim with compelling data By Jeri I noticed this title in the index of one of Rodney Stark's books and was intrigued enough to buy a copy. . I'm so glad I did. It's almost five hundred pages of dense arguments proving the constant charity of the Catholic church. Some caveats: this was fist published in 1885, and the language is Victorian. And, given our own ecumenical times, Baluffi can seem downright scornful to non Catholics.Nevertheless, he's marshaled lots of compelling information. Tertullian describes how the church apportioned the money she collected, "not on banquets, but in burying the dead, in supporting the poor, in the relief of orphans, of old men, and of those who suffered shipwreck. A portion is given for the aid of Christians who were condemned for the faith to work in mines, or cast upon desert islands or thrown into prison" (p 8).In fact, from the very first documents of the early Church, in Paul's epistles, we see one community gathering alms to give to the aid of another. The church in Rome constantly sent alms to poorer Christian communities, not to mention relieving the poor in Rome. This stood in stark contrast to a pagan culture that had little regard for the poor. Early Christians visited their brethren in prison, bringing food and comfort. They organized help and money for widows and the indigent."Christian slaves who served pagan masters were the objects of special solicitude. Such victims were often ransomed by generous Christians at the sacrifice of their own freedom" (p 13). Carthage actually collected a hundred thousand sesterces in order to ransom Numidian Christians who were slaves. Two Roman prefects, Hermes and Chromatius freed all the slaves they owned on the day they were baptized - a total of about 2700 slaves.Christian charity - love - spread relentlessly across the empire. Unlike the Romans, Christians didn't flee a city when plague struck. To the stunned amazement of the pagans, Christians stayed to care for the sick. Most important for society was "the family reformation" (p 25), which insisted that men as well as women were to be faithful to their spouses. Just as with the Jews, abortion and infanticide was forbidden,"During the long succession of ages not a single philosopher asserted the natural equality of men)...It was reserved for Christianity...The Apostles proclaimed the dignity of man and the equality of all before God" ( p 31). St Ambrose denounced slavery. Melania spent her enormous fortune on purchasi8g the freedom of some 8,000 slaves before joining a convent (p 32).The ugly, bloody games were ended by Telemachus, a monk. He stopped two gladiators in the Colosseum from slaughtering each other by coming between them. The pagan crowd tore him to bits. But the murderous games stopped. As soon as Christianity was declared legal, hospitals and aids to the poor were started. In Constantinople, Zoticus founded the first Christian orphanage. The first real hospital for the sick was opened by Basil. The empire fell as surges of barbarian tribes flooded across Europe. The difference between the beliefs of the barbarian tribes and the Catholics is so great it is shocking; It took the church to talk "the Massagetae ...to stop eating old men, the Scythians of burying the living in the graves of their illustrious dead, the Hiorcanians and the inhabitants along the Caspian of feeding their dogs the flesh of dead men" (p 52).Baluffi argues that "the church educated barbarous Europe" and that the "Popes were universal peace makers" (p 80) in a dark age. "The greatest criminals, hitherto confined in public prisons, were consigned to monasteries to do penance for crimes" (p 111). At length, "The Church dissipated the darkness in which the world was plunged" (p 85) with science and art.It was "the monks, and the monks alone, who made a search for the few books that had not been burned or otherwise destroyed...Not only did they transcribe the Sacred Scriptures, but all the works of ancient literature" (p 121). Saving ancient knowledge was only one benefit of monasteries to society. They cleared swamps, grew crops and gave food and alms to the poor. There is no real index, and at times Baluffi jumps from one .era and country to another with not enough explanation. Yet this is a splendid book, worth the investment for anyone interested in the history of the Catholic church.
