37 of 39 people found the following review helpful. Utterly Unputdownable By bilko This is a well-paced and truly insightful account of royal life, or life as it was in the days of Diana. All the characters - the noble and the not-so-noble - are brought together in a superb tale which neatly unites those two crucial elements of a cracking story: conflict and glamour. It moved me; I loved it. Richly entertaining,nicely-delivered anecdotes form the flesh on a spine of poignancy and ultimate tragedy. It's strange as I noticed a couple of poor reviews for this book, so maybe it's not for everyone. Though why moan about the gossip? The British royal family has always been the subject of gossip and long may that continue. Wasn't it the gossips who told us about Diana's troubles while the Palace continued to issue swift and sniffy denials? Sure, this is a book for the gossip lover, but just as it is a book for anyone who savours the wicked intricacies of romance and relationships. This isn't the first book I've read by Chris Hutchins, and I like his style. Poor Diana. I think she would have enjoyed it.

The story is a rambling jumble of events that skips from one person to the next across various time periods. What I found to bet the most disturbing was the end of the book. There is no conclusion or any type of an ending. It is as though the author put down the pen (or left the computer) and walked out of the room mid-thought. This is not worth the time to read as a free book let alone the asking price of $8.49.

By Happyslapper While not the best book I have ever read on the subject; it does have one thing going for it; it does not go for the tabloid sleaze that so many books on famous women aim for.We are aware of both Diana and Charles' affairs, and yes, though wrong, they both no doubt had their reasons. However, to focus so much on Camilla and James Hewitt and to eliminate many of the other aspects of Diana's life left me wanting more details into her relationship with the family. Isn't that what the book is called? Something is also confusing - is this paperback edition was edited in 2011, why did it not include Diana's tragic untimely death and the family's reaction to that?For a book that I would deem to be only slightly better than others written about the late Princess of Wales, I would say you could live without it. Although it does provide an excellent history on British royalty, what does this have to do with her relationship to the family? In other words, title sort of doesn't go with contents of the book, in my opinion.And what's with that ending? Wherein Prince William looks at his mother's picture on the door at Ludgrove School and replies, "jolly nice". Well, we would hope all our kids find us "jolly nice". What does that have to do with "Diana's Nightmare: The Family".?

Alice is playing with a white kitten (whom she calls "Snowdrop") and a black kitten (whom she calls "Kitty")—the offspring of Dinah, Alice's cat in Alice's Adventures in Wonderland—when she ponders what the world is like on the other side of a mirror's reflection. Climbing up on the fireplace mantel, she pokes at the wall-hung mirror behind the fireplace and discovers, to her surprise, that she is able to step through it to an alternative world. In this reflected version of her own house, she finds a book with looking-glass poetry, "Jabberwocky", whose reversed printing she can read only by holding it up to the mirror. She also observes that the chess pieces have come to life, though they remain small enough for her to pick up. Upon leaving the house (where it had been a cold, snowy night), she enters a sunny spring garden where the flowers have the power of human speech; they perceive Alice as being a "flower that can move about." Elsewhere in the garden, Alice meets the Red Queen, who is now human-sized, and who impresses Alice with her ability to run at breathtaking speeds. This is a reference to the chess rule that queens are able to move any number of vacant squares at once, in any direction, which makes them the most "agile" of pieces. The Red Queen reveals to Alice that the entire countryside is laid out in squares, like a gigantic chessboard, and offers to make Alice a queen if she can move all the way to the eighth rank/row in a chess match. This is a reference to the chess rule of Promotion. Alice is placed in the second rank as one of the White Queen's pawns, and begins her journey across the chessboard by boarding a train that literally jumps over the third row and directly into the fourth rank, thus acting on the rule that pawns can advance two spaces on their first move. After reciting the long poem "The Walrus and the Carpenter", the Tweedles draw Alice's attention to the Red King—loudly snoring away under a nearby tree—and maliciously provoke her with idle philosophical banter that she exists only as an imaginary figure in the Red King's dreams (thereby implying that she will cease to exist the instant he wakes up). Finally, the brothers begin acting out their nursery-rhyme by suiting up for battle, only to be frightened away by an enormous crow, as the nursery rhyme about them predicts. Tenniel illustration of the White Knight. 1871 Alice next meets the White Queen, who is very absent-minded but boasts of (and demonstrates) her ability to remember future events before they have happened. Alice and the White Queen advance into the chessboard's fifth rank by crossing over a brook together, but at the very moment of the crossing, the Queen transforms into a talking Sheep in a small shop. Alice soon finds herself struggling to handle the oars of a small rowboat, where the Sheep annoys her with (seemingly) nonsensical shouting about "crabs" and "feathers". Unknown to Alice, these are standard terms in the jargon of rowing. Thus (for a change) the Queen/Sheep was speaking in a perfectly logical and meaningful way.

Ross treats his material reverently, abridging Carroll's chattiness, but seldom changing his words. The full-color cartoons are unmistakably Ross's, but they stick closely to the composition and content of Tenniel's original black-and-white drawings, with some additional pictures (the nonsense of the last banquet, for instance, proves irresistible). This version has a modern air with the slightly oversized pages and sly, humorous artwork that fits the illogical craziness of the story surprisingly well. This con-artist Walrus is unforgettable, and the empty oyster shells with feet sticking straight up in the air are most memorable. It's not true--despite Ross's otherwise sensible introduction--that all the humor is here (where are the ``six impossible things before breakfast''?); but his forthrightly honest approach (even the title page reads ``Abridged & Illustrated by...'' in caps) merits some indulgence, while even purists will enjoy comparing his witty, freely rendered caricatures with Tenniel's elegantly limned art--which Ross's frequently parodies. About the Author Lewis Carroll was the pen name of Charles Lutwidge Dodgson, an English writer, mathematician, Anglican deacon, and photographer. Best known for his classics Alice s Adventures in Wonderland, Through the Looking Glass, and Jabberwocky, Carroll was also an accomplished inventor who created an early version of what is today known as Scrabble. The publication of Alice s Adventures in Wonderland in 1865 brought Carroll a certain level of fame, although he continued to supplement his income through his work as a mathematics tutor at Christ Church, Oxford College. Carroll s whimsical characters and nonsensical verse resonated with Victorian-era readers, and his books continue to be enjoyed by numerous modern societies dedicated to his promoting his works.

About the Author Marine, social worker, carpet layer, janitor, bartender, race horse trainer, and college professor, McGarrah lives in Louisville, Kentucky, close enough to Churchill Downs to hear the crowd roar each year at the Kentucky Derby. Jim McGarrah's poems, essays, and stories appear frequently in literary journals such as Bayou Magazine, Breakwater, Cincinnati Review, Chamber Four, Connecticut Review, and North American Review. He is the author of three award-winning books of poetry: Running the Voodoo Down (Elixir Press, 2003); When the Stars Go Dark (Main Street Rag, 2009); and Breakfast at Denny's (Ink Brush Press, 2013). His memoir of war, A Temporary Sort of Peace (Indiana Historical Society Press, 2007) won the national Eric Hoffer Legacy Non-Fiction Award, and the sequel, The End of an Era, was published in 2011. He is editor, along with Tom Watson, of the anthology Home Again: Essays and Memoirs from Indiana and the former managing editor of Southern Indiana Review.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Compelling, Clever, and Soaked in Whiskey By Erin McCoy Fantastic journey back into what was both a simpler and more complex time. Jim McGarrah's poetic sensibilities are on display, bringing a gentle edge to the rough-hewn characters that pepper his memories of his time in the back of the race tracks. If you're an avid fan of the history of horse racing, you need to read this book in that it's an amusing (and educational) look at horse racing in the 1970s. Otherwise, McGarrah's *Off Track* resists the urge to just be an informative memoir of horses, PTSD, and colorful barn folk; universal themes of humanity - like family relationships, brotherhood, and the nuances of human existence - allow McGarrah's stories to take on a broader perspective. While seeming to be a collection of tall tales of the seedy underbelly of the horse-racing game, McGarrah's is able to reflect on his behavior as a young adult adrift in a sea of alcoholism and an America in transition - McGarrah is in transition too. His dry humor and often acerbic yarn-spinning abilities are on full display in this book, and it's a pretty enjoyable ride. This is a writer who can manage heavy subject matter with a half-smile; his reconciliation of his past invites you to look deeper into yourself, and smile back at times when you had little to do but hold on to, but you held on.

I highly recommend OFF TRACK by Jim McGarrah... A marvelous story teller! We are so fortunate that this Marine came back from Vietnam broken but able to pull himself together to share insights with all of us.

By Sage of the Age I am a tremendous admirer of Jim McGarrah's poetry, and I have never been anything but delighted by his previous memoirs and essays. "Off Track" is a very human account of the zigzag, tumbling, the trauma, the discovery, the loss,the lateral drift, and the absurdity that make up a colorful life. Even if you didn't live through these times and know little or nothing about horse racing culture you will be delighted by the emotionally honest and rich observations and the surefooted storytelling. McGarrah is both a lovable self-deprecating humorist and an existential cannonball of shocking commentary you cannot ignore. I have rarely been as entertained and edified by personal writing. Belongs on every must read soon list.

This trip with author Sam and his wife PJ was almost a complete south to north border trip of Arizona. Sam is not only a writer but also an artist, to be so fully engaged in recording this trip with painting and then with words is to me very admirable. It is a new way to record a trip, not with selfies or with photos but with words in a specific format and rhythm. Makes me think that even I could use this model for a simple but effective way to "journal" my travels.
