This book was written just the way I like. The reader is drawn into the story. The author captures the place and the people of this small Arkansas town in the early 1980s. The people are presented in a compassionate but factual manner. I would love to see more true crime books from this author. If you like true crime books with "heart" read this book!

I started with lurid magazines like True Detective, back when such things were unacceptable but not politically incorrect. We didn’t have political incorrectness then. We had tacky and low-class, which True Detective certainly was. I graduated from those to more sophisticated books such as Ann Rule’s The Stranger Beside Me, Joe McGinniss’s Fatal Vision, and Tommy Thompson’s Blood and Money.Anita Paddock’s Blind Rage was not intended to be any of those, and people who criticize it because it isn’t need to revise their rigid views of what constitutes a true crime book. “True crime” is not limited to the journalistic kind of work some authors turn out. There have been many good true crime books written from a more personal perspective, and they, too, are excellent. In Cold Blood comes to mind—a true crime whose author became so intimate with his subject that his reporting of the events makes it seem as if were there.I doubt that Ms. Paddock set out to one-up Truman Capote, something not many writers can do, but she has nevertheless followed in his footsteps by creating a narrative that brings the people and places alive. No, she wasn’t there for every conversation. No, she didn’t lay out the many police and legal documents that no doubt accompanied the murder and ensuing trial. That doesn’t mean this isn’t a true crime book.Paddock's deep connection to the region and abiding respect for its denizens allows her to humanize the people involved in the life and death of Ruie Ann Park without absolving any of them of responsibility for their actions.Would I have liked more detail on Ruie Ann Park and her children? Yes, I probably would. But if you gave me a choice between a book chock full of details, delivered in a distant, objective style, and one with fewer details and a warmer, more personal narrative, I'll always choose the latter.Not every book we call "true crime" is designed to act as a reference work for the true crime junkie. Some are just well-written books that give us insight into other people without requiring us to have a degree in forensic science or police procedure. Blind Rage is one of those. Check it out.

I found it to be a quick read because of the things I have noted. I think the author is to be commended and I look forward to her next book.

Father Goriot or Old Goriot) is widely considered to be Balzac's greatest work, an assessment which is difficult to refute. Though this incredibly prolific author habitually churned out novels and stories of four-star quality or better, with this masterpiece he truly hit one out of the park.The novel opens with a detailed description of the Maison Vauquer, a squalid boarding house in a shabby neighborhood, populated by poor students on their way up and poor retirees on their way down. Here dwells Joachim Goriot, a retired pasta manufacturer, whom his housemates refer to, more derisively than affectionately, as "Father Goriot". Once incredibly wealthy, Goriot is slowly reducing himself to a state of destitution by gratifying the expensive whims of his two daughters, who court his adoration for their financial gain while simultaneously shunning him out of shame for the very poverty which they have caused. Goriot strikes up a friendship with fellow boarder Eugène de Rastignac, a law student from the provinces who sets himself upon the arduous task of landing a rich and influential mistress to aid him in climbing the ladder of Parisian society. As he fumbles his way through the labyrinthine conventions of the higher class, Eugène soon discovers that an increase in social status is not necessarily accompanied by an increase in wealth, and he struggles for a means of supporting his new lifestyle. Another inhabitant of the Maison Vauquer, Monsieur Vautrin, a shady character of unknown origin, tempts Eugène with a quick, expeditious means of attaining great wealth, causing the young man to question his deepest held values and reassess his personal ethics.Père Goriot is the keystone of the Comédie Humaine, a series of at least 90 interconnected works, linked by recurring characters, in which Balzac encapsulates the multiple facets of French society in the early 19th century. Nevertheless, the novel can be thoroughly enjoyed as a stand-alone piece, and it is not necessary to have read any of Balzac's other work. Nor is much prior historical knowledge required. Although it provides insightful commentary on the society of its time, the themes it presents are universal. Goriot's selfless love for his daughters, Eugène's blind ambition, and Vautrin's Machiavellian philosophy of life are just as relevant to today's audience as they were to the readers of almost two centuries ago.Though its frank and often ugly depictions of people and places may qualify this book as a precursor to naturalism, the characters and events take on the larger-than-life dimensions of a grand opera or a Shakespearean tragedy. Père Goriot exemplifies the way in which Balzac combined the best elements of Romanticism and Realism to form his own unique literary style. If you've never read Balzac before, this is the best place to start. If you're already familiar with this great author but you haven't yet experienced this masterwork, buy it, borrow it, or download it now.

14 of 14 people found the following review helpful. Classics in Translation By Passage Pere Goriot is a great novel, though what I loved as a college student is not what I loved upon re-reading. As a younger reader I loved the sacrificial devotion of the father for his daughters. As a mature adult, I was disturbed, finding it what we now would call enabling and infantilizing.The characters are so well drawn, as are the times, the era, the city of Paris in all it's glory and misery. These are what make the book greatThe problem is the translations of many of these free books. They are translated by more than one person, and it's very obvious. Some sections are fine, others very poor and hard to follow. So we aren't getting a fair shot at reading the novel as it was written. It's too bad, because these erratic translations may turn some readers away from the classic,novels of the 18th and 19th centuries.

By Godspark Balzac guided European fiction away from the overriding influence of Walter Scott and the Gothic school, by showing that modern life could be recounted as vividly as Scott recounted his historical tales, and that mystery and intrigue did not need ghosts and crumbling castles for props. Maupassant, Flaubert and Zola were writers of the next generation who were directly influenced by him, and Marcel Proust (that other weaver of a great tapestry) acknowledged his influence.He is worth reading for pleasure as well as for his influence on European literature.

Set in a plantation in the Solomon Islands, it is blatantly racist towards the natives and started off with describing a disgusting disease which had infected many of them. Even the British plantation owner, who was the only white man there, had symptoms of the disease but he still needed to maintain discipline over his black workers who were recruited for five-year stints and paid very low wages. I cringed at the description of the disease and I cringed at the description of the discipline, but frankly, I couldn't stop reading.Written in 1911, this is a novel about a time and a place. It is also a story of a romance. And a story about a young beautiful liberated American woman named Joan who was raised free and wild in Hawaii, taught to captain a ship, handle a rough crew, and resist marital entanglements. When her ship runs adrift on the plantation owner's property, he naturally falls head over heels in love with her.What follows is nothing short of high adventure and I can well understand the title of this short 190 page novel. There are worker uprisings, long treks through the jungle, murder, revenge, a duel between two white men and a wild assortment of shady characters. The story moves fast and gives quite a sordid picture of life in the Solomon Islands at time. It is a hard life for everybody and yet, as Jack London describes it, is also a life of high adventure as well as a great example of the work of this author.

If you're a Jack London fan you will not be dissapointed By Phil Jack London’s detailed knowledge of the subjects he writes about astounds me, this level of detail can not be dreamed up, it must come from his real experience and to have been out amongst the world that he writes about is what I find most amazing as are the characters he discusses – never a dull moment. If Jack London were alive today I’d absolutely want to spend some time with

An average length book full of interesting facets and offshoots of activity that flow out into what I think is a masterpiece of story telling. The title, "Adventure," is most cleverly chosen and fits perfectly the "drift" of the narrative. I enjoyed it very much.

Max is "cheerfully self-sufficient" (often to the point of rudeness), a womanizer, a "chameleon," and not above lying, which makes Don so very curious that from the first day Max moves in next door, Don begins spying on him. What intrigues Don most is the number of affairs Max has--but only with obese women. Don becomes so inquisitive that he begins to watch Max's sexual encounters via a peephole. Soon, however, our protagonist noticesthat his friend is attracted to a certain kind of woman--the heavy kind! As the young professor voyeuristicallywatches his friend move from relationship torelationship, he begins to question his own rathermundane existence, and by the end of the novelhe has become obsessed with his friend's lifestyle.I am a lover of BBW (Big Beautiful Women) myself, so I was instantly attracted to the subject matter.Although the climax of the story is somewhat troubling(suffice it to say that it appears the author "punishes"the colleague for his tastes), I thought the treatment oflarger women as objects of desire was otherwise fair.As more and more women rightly rebel againstAmerica's renewed "corset culture" (i.e., one thatdemands that women be ever slimmer, to the point ofceasing to menstruate), I am happy to see at least onework of professional fiction that celebrates fleshywomanly beauty. Perhaps "Flesh" will bring even moreFAs (Fat Admirers) out of the closet than are currentlyemerging on the internet, no longer afraid to confess tothe fetish that dares not speak its name

"Fat Bottomed Girl, You Make the Rockin' World Go Round" By Cliff Burns David Galef has a keen sense of humor--FLESH exhibits his observational skills and knack for creating fully fleshed (!) characters, damned and redeemed by their flaws and innate humanity. Anti-fat bias? I read this novel from cover to cover and back again and could find no such thing. It is a book about fetishists and bent desires and is written with such obvious affection toward its subjects that anyone looking for an ax to grind had better check another tool shed. FLESH is achingly funny and its rather jaundiced depiction of academia reminds me of a terrific Richard Russo offering I read some years back. An erotic and knowing novel by a writer who has only gotten better over the years. Check out his new book HOW TO COPE WITH SUBURBAN STRESS and you'll see what I mean. A courageous and literate author.

They inhabit a world of academia, in a sense 'anycampus, USA', although actually set in the venerable halls of Ole Miss, USA. Don is something of an outsider, originating in New York, but the real outsider is Max. We are taken on a whistle stop tour of the dramatis personae of the campus and the town, a bit of voyeurism into their features and foibles, but the keenest quarry of our looking in is Max, right down to Don's peephole into his apartment.So what is it about Max?? Well, a little like this preamble, following theexplicitly up front announcement of the title, we are only slowly andgradually ushered through to the centre stage - that Max is an FA and hisattention is on big women. So what's an FA? Certainly the phrase doesn'tappear in the book. A for Admirer is the more general currency. Could beAdorer...maybe Appreciater is best. No matter - the etymology and theliteral rendition is already unimportant; it's shorthand for men with ataste, in the words of that FA blues, for Big Legged Women.Flesh is a pacy, piquant and perky novel. Witty and entertaining. Itsvignettes of 'scripted' conversation and 'screenplay' action at the severalcocktail type agglomerations of the characters which pepper the booksometimes verge on the hilarious and appear, here at any rate, as a forte of the author. But this is the stuff of many a novel and even many a good one - but not for this is the book remarkable, No, it is for its contribution to thegenre, indeed for its launching of the genre that FAs will be interested in it,and perhaps celebrating it. After all - they (you?) may have read the pieces in FAmags, and seen the pieces on FA websites, but before this had they ever seen a mainstream FA novel? I think not, and for this alone the author is to be congratulated. Perhaps a case of one small step for FAs, one giant step for mainstream publishing.In a way the sheer title and the main feature of one of the centralprotaganists remain the most remarkable things about it. The distinguishing marks of the book unfold gingerly - perhaps we're witnessing a sort of tentative coming out on the part of the author. Indeed, as he grows bolder, so each successive flame of Max's emerges with greater girth than the last. There are sorties into the territory of the wordsmithing of voluptuousness, although these too remain tentative and ambivalent - FA's will find them alluring, while for others they will remain descriptive and non-committal - Beatrice -'the whole of her was substantial, she seemed to overflow her boundaries'; Helen - 'her breasts warped the design of her T-shirt like twin Mercator projections'; Bibi - 'hard to tell where her bust ended and her belly began...she clamped his hand ...between her armpit and the fleshy swell of her upper arm'. And these too come with accelerating frequency in the latter part of the book.Finally, there is the sting in the tail at the end of the narrative, andhaving already said that, I'll resist saying any more to give the endingaway. (Yes, for those who've already read it, pun intended.) The endingitself has to be, at least, controversial. There's a dark humour in it thatfrom the fat apologist's point of view could be thought regrettable; but thebook wan't written as a polemic, and as a mainstream publication perhapsinevitably it would conclude with a catchy and dramatic rather than a happy ending.For readers left wondering about the author's personal views on fat issues,here's his statement: "I believe that fat people - or large-sized, orwhatever term you prefer - are still some of the most discriminated against people in civilized countries that ought to know and behave better."

Accurate and brutally honest interpretation of CID undercover operations in Europe. Probably make today's RAOs shudder just a tad. Bill Ivory is a bona fide legend in CID and deservedly so. Fun read that brought back lots of memories. However, the editing, grammar, and spellcheck would not have passed a team chief's review, let alone an experienced OPs officer.

5 of 6 people found the following review helpful. One of London's "Individualist" stories By Bobby Newman Jack London was a complicated individual who has left critics baffled at times. London was an avowed socialist, yet in Mutiny of the Elsinore, we read an emphatic discussion of how/why the "ruling classes" are the ruling classes, and that this is just as it should be (contrast this, for example, with London's The Iron Heel). The Elsinore story is similar to London's The Sea Wolf in that we see the gradual "manification" of a too-wealthy and too-underworked "aristocrat" who must discover his manhood on a voyage around The Cape that goes hopelessly wrong. It is an exciting adventure story, set against the backdrop of the "Superman" period of London's writings. There are some serious flaws in the book, however, with a sub-plot about a revengeful first mate that simply never gets resolved or mentioned after a big build-up. A suggestion of cannibalism is made (where are the mutineers getting their food?) but this is also never explained. Three myserious sailors join the trip on the Cape, but who they are and where they really came from is never fully developed. Still, if you enjoyed "The Abysmal Brute" and similar London stories, you'll enjoy this one. Just don't expect much sympathy for the masses (e.g., People of the Abyss). You won't find it here.

Coming back to it after nearly 40 years, I still do; but it also raises questions about Jack London and what was going on in his head when he wrote it.Published in 1914, only two years before his death, The Mutiny of the Elsinore isn’t the most famous of London’s books and it’s not seen as his best. But there’s still a lot to enjoy. The book’s plot (without spoilers) is as follows: In March 1913 and a successful but world-weary young playwright, John Pathurst, seeks refreshment and inspiration by going round the Horn as a passenger on a windjammer from Baltimore to Seattle. He knows the Elsinore may take months over the voyage, but that’s fine. He has paid highly for his passage, and is accompanied by his manservant; he intends to be comfortable. But the rounding of the Horn is drawn-out and dangerous, and the ship is nearly lost. Moreover the regime aboard the Elsinore is harsh, and the crew are a bunch of no-good lowlifes who will eventually mutiny against it. Pathurst’s luxury passage will turn into a nightmare.The long voyage south-east towards West Africa and then south-west to the tip of Argentina is used to build up character and tension, so that by the time the Elsinore gets stuck in westerlies off the Horn, you know there’s a disaster waiting to happen. It helps that London does a fair job of evoking what life in a windjammer must have been like. He can do this because this book was drawn, at least in part, from life. In March 1911 London and his second wife, Charmian Kitteredge London, took ship in Baltimore on a windjammer, the Dirigo, bound westward on the same route.The windjammers came into service in the last quarter of the 19th century. They were the last of the age of sail; iron- or steel-hulled, they were designed to carry bulk cargoes that were not time-sensitive and could be carried more cheaply than by steam, by using the prevailing winds. The Dirigo was one of the finest, built in Maine in 1894 to an English design. London and Kitteredge boarded it in Baltimore very much as Pathurst does in the book, and Kitteredge later described the voyage in a memoir of London that she published a few years after his death. The Elsinore is clearly the Dirigo and the novel includes a number of incidents that that are in Kitteredge’s account. Most are trivial (London/Pathurst’s fox terrier, Possum; an attack of hives; the chickens in the hut amidships). One or two are major. For example, in the novel, the captain dies on passage off the Horn. On the Londons’ real voyage he did fall sick there, and died shortly after the ship reached Seattle.The captain and mate in the book also seem to match those of the Dirigo. The captain, according to Charmian Kitteredge, was: “The fast disappearing type of lean New England aristocrat, who always presented himself on deck immaculately attired... The calm kingliness of his character was in cool contrast to that of the Mate, Fred Mortimer, hot-hearted, determined, all-around efficient driver of a crew that was composed, with a few exceptions well along in years, of landlubbers and weaklings.” London takes these two officers and exaggerates their characteristics, and those of the crew too. The latter board in Baltimore: “ ... for’ard of the amidship house I encountered a few laggards who had not yet gone into the forecastle. These were the worse for liquor, and a more wretched, miserable, disgusting group of men I had never seen in any slum. Their clothes were rags. Their faces were bloated, bloody, and dirty. I won’t say they were villainous. They were merely filthy and vile. They were vile of appearance, of speech, and action." And later: “I ...wondered where such a mass of human wreckage could have been obtained. There was something wrong with all of them. Their bodies were twisted, their faces distorted, and almost without exception they were under-sized.”Long before the mutiny of the title, life on the Elsinore becomes a struggle of two worlds – the gracious, comfortable world of the officers and crew in the poop, dining pleasantly every night, the Mate, Pike, playing classical gramophone records with enthusiasm; and the forecastle, full of degenerate wretches that Pike controls with an iron fist and great savagery. Bit by bit the Elsinore seems to appear a microcosm of a divided, unfair society. Is this what Jack London was trying to say in this book?Maybe, but there’s something not quite right here. Pathurst is the narrator, and his sense of superiority expresses itself in a belief that the Captain and the Mate are superior beings, and the crew scum. His class is thus destined to dominate. Moreover a number of the crew meet with nasty ends even before the mutiny. During it, two die quite horribly, torn apart by giant albatrosses: “A great screeching and squawking arose from the winged things of prey as they strove for the living meat. And yet, somehow, I was not very profoundly shocked. These were the men whom I had seen eviscerate [a] shark and toss it overboard, and shout with joy as they watched it devoured alive by its brethren. They had played a violent, cruel game with the things of life, and the things of life now played upon them the same violent, cruel game.”Oh dear. Men born to rule over their inferiors, and nature red in tooth and claw. It’s the narrator’s voice, but London seems to use it with great enthusiasm (with references to the captain as a Samurai warrior, and occasional references to Nietzche). It’s just a little too genuine, and Pathhurst’s views are not discredited by the way the book ends. Jack London was a socialist all his life, but was there also a whiff of fascism about him?George Orwell thought so. Writing in 1940 about an earlier London book, The Iron Heel, he commented that London was “temperamentally ...very different from the majority of Marxists. With his love of violence and physical strength, his belief in ‘natural aristocracy’, his animal-worship and exaltation of the primitive, he had in him what one might fairly call a Fascist strain." In The Mutiny of the Elsinore, I think I see this; it’s also evident in his earlier and greater book, The Sea Wolf. However, Orwell didn’t say London was a fascist. Rather, he thought these traits made London better able to understand the nature of the ruling class, and that far from espousing fascism, he understood its dangers before it existed (The Iron Heel, published in 1908, describes a fascistic dystopia). It is more likely that London is using Pathurst to warn how the ruling class really think. Still, the earliest Nazis were pretty good at appealing to a certain type of person on the left as well as the right. Reading The Mutiny of the Elsinore, you do wonder whether, had London lived into the Fascist era, he might have been swept up in it all.That apart, The Mutiny of the Elsinore is quite a book. Some have accused London of being long-winded, but he isn’t here. To be sure, he takes time to ramp up the tension before the mutiny, but that works. The description of the ship as it fights to round the Horn is also excellent, bringing forth a picture of a great steel ship, its sides streaked with rust, burdened by a cargo of thousands of tons of coal, wallowing in the huge seas as the sun comes and goes behind fast-moving, hostile clouds. The crew are also well-drawn. Now and then they do get close to caricature, but most work well. In particular, there is a frail man with a twisted spine who radiates malevolence; he is also very well-read, and it is easy to see where that malevolence comes from as he compares Pathurst’s lot with his own. Several of the crew are clearly “bad lots” and there is a reign of terror in the forecastle, from which the officers mostly dissociate themselves. By the time the ship reaches the Le Maire (or Lemaire) Strait at the southern extremity of Argentina, several of the crew have gone mad, or killed themselves or someone else.Perhaps London exaggerates somewhat (he’s writing a novel, after all). But life on a windjammer was indeed hard. To compete with steam, they sailed on small margins; the crew were paid little, the food was bad and the ships were sometimes worked with too few men. London is not exaggerating about the difficulty of rounding the Horn, either. Now and then a skipper just gave up, turned round and sailed east around the world instead.You can still see the Tall Ships, as they are now called; a number have survived as training ships for navies, and every now and then they foregather somewhere and are a tourist attraction. New Yorkers can see two moored at the South Street Seaport. But their time as trading ships was really over by 1939. The Mutiny of the Elsinore is a striking account of how it must have been. Maybe it raises doubts about how London saw his fellow-man. Maybe it doesn’t. In any case, London is not the only person whose attitudes now look suspect because of events that he pre-dated, and would not have condoned. Like The Sea-Wolf, Jack London’s The Mutiny of the Elsinore is a rattling good read and a vibrant picture of an era that has passed.

The Mad Atlas of Virginia King By ivani The Mad Atlas of Virginia King, a non-fiction novel by Jacksonville, Florida author Tim Gilmore, is as unique and mesmerizing as the protagonist Virginia King herself.Gilmore sets the book’s tone by opening with Walt Whitman’s 1855 preface to the original Leaves of Grass. Next, a few lyrics from “Roadhouse Blues” by The Doors: Ashen lady...Give up your vows...Save our city...Right now. And then, the Reverend Tom Are’s eulogy: “It seems to me that Virginia King served as something of a prophet in our town.”Turn the page and the unexpected foreword by Hurley Winkler includes quirky illustrations of Miss Virginia King wearing her pillbox hat, a scowling face, and her determined hunched-back walk around the town.Tim Gilmore spent countless hours at the Jacksonville Historical Society researching Virginia’s handwritten, “often inaccurate notes” about Jacksonville. These notes were found in binders covering 8,558 pages tucked away in dusty shelves. Virginia’s book titled, Interesting Facts about Leading People and Families of Duval County: Also, Where Progress Has Changed a Lot of Homes and Buildings, was originally published in 1968. However she continued to publish longer and longer editions up to 1977.Gilmore examined numerous, blurry and fading photos of buildings and residences taken by Virginia with her Brownie camera throughout the years. Many of these photos along with her handwritten, very specific notations on each picture, are found throughout The Mad Atlas of Virginia King.There are several hand-drawn maps and drawings of residences by Kiley Secrest illustrating where Virginia King lived from 1915 to 2001.When I started reading The Mad Atlas of Virginia King, it felt like a daunting task trying to follow the author’s factual documentation of Virginia’s different addresses and residential dates. Being new to Jacksonville, it was difficult to visualize the multiple locations listed. But soon Gilmore’s descriptions began to take form. Virginia was a little girl. She had seizures. She was and “odd child, and an old child too.”And suddenly, it’s the 1920’s and the little girl Virginia vanishes from the pages. Gilmore’s stream of consciousness rudely interrupts. He’s buying wine at a local package store. But the interruption doesn’t last and Gilmore returns back in time. It is now the 1960’s and I get a glimpse of Virginia’s apartment. It’s 1974 and Virginia moves again. However, the author’s jarring presence is back. It’s 1992. Gilmore is at a party at the very apartment Virginia once lived. Rats are fed to pythons. And then it’s 2015 again. There’s an old man with a filthy beard spewing profanities from a porch.Before I even realize it, I was hooked. I didn’t see it coming: Virginia, Jacksonville, Gilmore were all connected. They were one. There was a pattern. Although a very convoluted pattern, I enjoyed the ride. Page after page, photo after photo, Gilmore brought to life the eccentric Riverside character children laughed at, adults shunned, and very few people loved. Gilmore masterfully followed her obsessive footsteps as she wandered the city on foot year after year. Walking. Documenting. Photographing. And desperately longing to keep her past intact. If not for Tim Gilmore’s dedication, Virginia King’s legacy, like the beautiful, decrepit buildings she could not save, would be lost forever. But with each sentence, Gilmore rebuilt, reconstructed, and resurrected the unloved and unlovable Virginia King. By touching “the same page Virginia touched...these two people so unlikely to have met” became one. Although, “she’s gone...and only the city remains”, Virginia King—“a prophet that saved the city”—lives eternally.

By haley I was required to read this book for my American Lit class in college, and though I had heard that James was a bit verbose and that the plot of the novel was purportedly about the life of a telegraph-girl, I nevertheless enjoyed it thoroughly. The novel centers on a young girl who works at the sounding board of an English store. Because she is the main operator, she is privy to all of the customer's private affairs, for she transcribes all of their personal notes. Some of her insights regarding relationships and the often-intimate details of her state of mind seemed to articulate some of my own thoughts. The "hook" of the plot(as concern other female-heroines of her time) revolves around her intense fatuation with a male customer, with whom she eventually falls in love. "In the Cage" is taut, well-written, and eerily similar to the trials and tribulations of everyday life in the present era.

You were there By Retired The unnamed main character of Henry James’ 1898 novella In the Cage is a postal clerk who reads the telegrams upper class residents send to each other – making dinner appointments, coordinating vacation schedules, arranging trysts – and has decided that one of them, the Captain – who has manners, speaks well, dresses to the nines – is simply the most attractive man she has ever seen. And, (shades of a Woody Allen movie) in spite of being engaged to one Mr. Mudge, she lets her feelings run rampant.She begins to walk out of her way going home to pass by the apartment building of Captain Everard on the chance that they might meet.Meanwhile, she learns more of the life of the beautiful people from her newly rekindled friendship with Mrs. Jordan the widow of a bishop, and in her youth the neighbor who shared the poverty that she, her sister and mother lived in. Now, with her booming business – taking care of the flowers in the apartments of the well to do – Mrs. Jordan is able to fill in some of the picture the heroine desperately wants to be part of, even offering her a job – which she declines.Then, on one of her evening walks home she miraculously does meet the Captain. This chance encounter allows them to converse outside the formal confines of the postal substation in the tonier part of London that she works in – and at the end of their conversation she tells him that she would do anything (in the sense of “take a bullet”) for him.The highpoint of her life – far exceeding the proposal of marriage that she gets from Mr. Mudge while on a week’s vacation in the autumn of the year – is the appearance of the Captain at the postal substation who asks her to retrieve a telegram he sent sometime in August. With a feeling of complete control over the fate of the Captain, she is able to tell him the content he is so interested in.Later, Mrs. Jordan tells her about the Captain who, it turns out, has been blackmailed, apparently, into marrying one of his consorts whose husband has just died; and, most likely hers and the Captain’s paths will never cross again.She now accepts her fate – a life of marriage to the dependable and devoted Mr. Mudge.In the Cage illustrates clearly why James is called the novelist of the psychological.He draws with superb detail:The infatuation the heroine has for an essential stranger.Perhaps you remember sitting on your bicycle parked in front of the house of the schoolgirl you thought was perfection but who never acknowledged your existence (except years later when she offers you a ride home from church in her brand new Chevrolet Impala – and you don’t ask her for coffee – some chances really only do come once in a lifetime).The superiority she feels toward her fiancé, her friend and her coworkers.Everyone knows the feeling of intellectual – even moral – superiority to the guy standing in front of you on line to the theater who strikes up a conversation with you and you immediately realize that this person is not someone who has been or ever will be part of your world.The envy she has of the upper class people who patronize the postal substation.Who hasn’t wished they were walking into their office, with a handful of messages and a sign on the door that says: “See my secretary for an appointment.”Her control when she is able to repeat from memory the message that Captain Everard needs to retrieve.Who has not felt the power knowing you have what someone wants – a word, a key, a nod, a gesture pointing them to the service others must still wait for; or, the relief whensomeone solves your problem, like the cook’s pass to pay for your breakfast tomorrow because you forgot your wallet today when he says: “I know you – you’re in here all the time.” And, you thought he never even saw you let alone remembered you.The ennui when Mrs. Jordan reveals the Captain’s true story.Who has not been punched in the gut of learning the truth about someone that is not the truth you had constructed in your mind – maybe a growing relationship that is suddenly cut off, leaving you with no address, no missive, no nothing – literally falling off the face of the earth (and you thought she liked you, wanted you, enjoyed your company but, in fact, you were probably just a diversion).The impression you get as you read some of the longest sentences you will ever read is that to take out even a single word would somehow detract from the whole which is indeed great. It is James’ perfect sense of the human condition that makes the story so appealing. In the Cage is nothing more or less than a perfect mirror.Look at it and smile.

By DDTMom Helena is not only an amazing healer, but a wonderfully instructive writer whose prose is smooth and well written. Her illustrative life story gives us all useful and needed lessons for living our life to our highest potential. She is refreshingly not afraid to speak her mind, has a wonderful sense of humor, and what she says contains truths which we all need to be reminded of. But she is not at all patronizing in her guidance! I highly recommend not only reading this book (the 2nd edition is even better than the first), but consulting with her at her website, www.activale.com.
