As the acknowledged founder and philosopher of the Parents' National Educational Union (PNEU), Charlotte Mason (1842-1923) was revered by her followers as a saintly Madonna figure. She died in 1923 at the peak of her fame, having achieved mythic status as the Principal of her House of Education and wide recognition after the introduction of her liberal educational programmes into state schools. Yet her early life and heritage remained shrouded in mystery. Drawing upon insubstantiated sources, the official biography released in 1960 confused rather than illuminated Charlotte's background, contributing to several enduring misapprehensions. In her new and definitive biography, Margaret Coombs draws on years of research to reveal for the first time the hidden backdrop to Charlotte Mason's life, tracing the lives of her previously undiscovered Quaker ancestors to offer a better understanding of the roots of her personality and ideas. Coombs charts her rise from humble beginnings as an orphaned pupil-teacher to great heights as a lady of culture venerated within prestigious PNEU circles, illustrating how with determination she surmounted rigid Victorian class divisions to achieve her educational vision. A thorough analysis of Charlotte Mason's educational influences and key friendships challenges longstanding notions about the roots of her philosophy, offering a more realistic picture of her life and work than ever accomplished before. With a growing following in the USA and Australia, Charlotte Mason's ideas have a clear relevance to the continuing educational debate today. Admirers of her philosophy and scholars of the history of education will find much to enthral and instruct them in these pages.

By Carroll Smith Margaret Coombs has done an incredible amount of work digging into numerous archives in England, Northern Ireland and Ireland to uncover the life and origins of Charlotte Mason. She has brought to life the early years of an educator that so many of us admire. From humble Quaker beginnings to a nationally known educator in the UK, Charlotte Mason achieved much. Her ideas are still living on especially in Canada, Australia and the US. Margaret's biography connects many dots in the life of Charlotte Mason that will enable us to admire her work and her life even more. This is a must read if you are interested in the life of Charlotte Mason. It is a ground breaking work that hopefully future biographers and educational theorist will draw from and build upon to gain further insight into Mason's life.

By Jack Beckman As one who has explored the life and work of Mason, I found Coombs' book to provide key insights to her as-to-now illusive background. The author's well-researched and documented narrative opens up a clearer and more cohesive story of Mason's early life We now have a more complete picture of what has been ambiguous and confusing as to Mason's parentage, place of birth, and seminal influences. Moving beyond the model of panegyric that accompanies much of what is written about Mason, Coombs manages to create a narrative fulfilling to those who reside in higher education. The book is redolent with documented evidences from a variety of archival sources that clarify and support the themes and tropes of the narrative. "Hidden Heritage" will certainly find a place in my taught course on the educational thought and practice of Charlotte Mason.

This is a wonderful book which reads like a novel By Victoria Waters This is a wonderful book which reads like a novel. When Margaret Coombs encountered Charlotte Mason while studying Victorian parenting, her experience and education made her aware that there were elements in the official Charlotte Mason biography that simply did not add up. When she finally had time to investigate fully, she learned that her hunches were indeed valid and that there was even more to the story.Mrs. Coombs shows us the Irish immigrant girl in Birkenhead, from a prominent Quaker family down on its luck, struggling to support herself through pupil-teaching. She shows the competent and ambitious young schoolteacher fighting, both for herself and her disadvantaged pupils, in a class-conscious society. This book helps us understand both why Miss Mason hid her background once she began moving among the rich and famous and why she was so energized when a way was found, in the Liberal Education for All movement, to bring her ideas to the lower-class children that she had once taught – and that she herself had once been. This book also provides a wealth of clues to further study of the social background to Charlotte Mason's life, especially as it relates to education and women. It is well worth the investment in every way.
