The Rise of Iskander, by Benjamin Disraeli

About the Author Benjamin Disraeli is perhaps the best known and certainly the most colorful of Britain's Prime Ministers during the long reign of Queen Victoria. He was also a prolific writer. His novelistic trilogy: Sybil, Coningsby, and Tancred and later works: Lothair and Endymion would alone earn him a special place in English life and literature, but it is his career as the leading Conservative of the century and writings and speeches on events of the age that earn him a special place in the pantheon of parliamentary politics.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. There are people who can't be vulgar for trying By H. Schneider There are 4 Henry James stories in this volume of 1896, all previously published in different magazines. I am happy to report that this story collection, properly entitled Embarrassments, is a major recovery after the previous dreariness of a story book called Terminations. James was back to his wicked, funny best, with a light hand.'The Next Time' is a farcical tale around the question whether literary quality requires or maybe even guarantees lack of success. Narrator is a critic whose praise is considered fatal for market success. Main character is a writer who tries desperately to be popular but cannot do it. His wife says of him: one has to think him a great man, because otherwise one would be ashamed of him. Funny and acidic. This must be 'about somebody', and I am rather certain it is about his own self. James is probably both: the failing writer and the 'Kiss of Death' critic.'Glasses' is a portrait of a pretty and naive young woman, narrated by a painter for whom she sits. She seems to lack social intelligence. She is a gold digger with dubious prospects. The narrator's rumor sources are particularly nasty here. The lady has the added problem that she tries to hide the fact that she needs glasses, which makes her sound a bit stupid by today's standards. But what could a poor gold-digging girl do at the time. (I do remember hearing unfriendly sexist comments about girls wearing glasses during my youth.)'The Figure in the Carpet' is another hoax, narrated by a young literary critic. He is mesmerized by a novelist's claim, made to himself, that there is a mystery to be found in that man's books, a secret. He starts looking for that secret, together with a friend and colleague. James pulls our legs nicely here. The joke is of the kind found in the Aspern Papers. We walk away empty handed after several hopeful approaches to the `figure in the carpet', the secret pattern. We will never know.'The Way It Came' is a sophisticated and subtle ghost story. Or is it a story of insane jealousy? Well, maybe both. The text is allegedly a part of a diary by an unspecified woman diarist, introduced by a doubting editor. This device of the text in the text is not often used by James. The diarist tells us of her broken engagement with a man who loved a ghost more than her. That's at least how she saw it. Is she an unreliable narrator? We will never know.

The Diamond Caper (Thorndike Press Large Print Mystery Series), by Peter Mayle

Review "As always, Mayle has a perfect command of his setting and his characters... Readers will want to take their time with this delightfully breezy and delicious new caper. A votre santé!" —The Examiner"Soaked in sun and sumptuous feasts, The Diamond Caper is rich with Mayle's signature style, which celebrates all that is Provencal with humor and a deft hand for storytelling... Sam and Elena are interesting characters to visit with, realistically drawn and complex. The accompanying cast is equally intriguing and memorable... A Provence that fairly pops off the pages, with descriptions of food rich enough to make any reader’s stomach rumble, and images of a beautiful Southern France that will leave them daydreaming of fine weather, feeling sun-drenched and lazy." —Portland Book Review"From the engaging first sentence... [The Diamond Caper] delights—more because of the French local color than any hardcore mystery solving... The book’s strength lies in the great descriptions of characters (“even [Sam’s] voice sounded suntanned”) and of all things French. As he does in his memoirs, Mayle excels at evoking French cuisine... Fans of his caper series will enjoy finding out how Sam and Elena’s romance develops." —Publishers Weekly“Mayle’s brilliant presentation of food and scenery will delight his readers.” —Booklist

Chapter 1   Why is it that bad news so often arrives on Monday mornings?   The call came at 6:00 a.m. local time, waking a reluctant Elena Morales from a deliciously deep sleep. It was her boss, Frank Knox, founder and CEO of Knox Insurance, and there was an undercurrent of tension in his voice. There was a problem, he said, and it was urgent. Despite the early-morning Los Angeles traffic, Elena was with him in his office by 7:30.   For once, his normally cheerful manner had deserted him. “I guess you’ve read some of this stuff already,” he said, opening the folder of newspaper clippings that was on his desk. “These jewelry robberies in the South of France are getting worse every year. And now it’s getting closer to home. A couple of hours ago, I had a call from our Paris office; one of their clients, Madame Castellaci, has just had a bunch of diamonds lifted from her house in Nice. She’s hysterical, and the office in Paris has been sent a claim the size of the national debt.” He paused to take a swig of coffee.   “What’s our liability?” Elena asked.   Knox’s eyebrows went up, and he shook his head. “We laid off as much of the risk as we could, but it’s still going to hurt us.” He took a deep breath. “We’re looking at seven figures. Two million, maybe three.”   “Do you reckon the claim’s valid? What do the police say?”   Knox shrugged. “Not much. From what I’ve been told, it seems to have been a professional job—no clues, no prints, nothing.”   “And what do our people in Paris say?”   “Help.”   Knox slumped back in his chair. Elena had never seen him look so despondent. He was planning to retire in a few months and enjoy a prosperous retirement, after thirty-five years of hard work. And now this. Even with the money he’d put away over the years, it was a blow. “Frank, what do you want me to do?”   “I’d like you to get over to the Paris office and go through everything they know,” Knox said after a deep sigh. “And then I’d like you to go down to Nice and grill the client.” He held up one hand. “I know, I know. The police will have done that, but sometimes they miss little things. It’s a long shot, but it’s all we’ve got.” He slid the folder of clippings across the desk. “Here—something to read on the plane. Good luck.” — Elena’s feelings were mixed as she packed for the trip. Normally, she would be delighted to be going once again to France. This visit, however, was unlikely to offer much in the way of enjoyment. Her colleagues in the Paris office would be distracted and anxious, and if Madame Castellaci in Nice was anything like some of Knox’s other clients, she would be bad-tempered and suspicious. Not for the first time, Elena was reminded of the irony of the insurance business. In theory, a mutually beneficial arrangement; in practice, a relationship in which, so often, each side distrusted the other. Cheating, misrepresentation, and blatant dishonesty—she had seen them all.   She tried to close her suitcase. As usual, it was overpacked; as usual, she had to sit on it to close the locks. She looked at her watch, saw that she had ten minutes before the car came to take her to the airport, and decided to call Sam Levitt, her partner in love and other adventures for the past several years. He was in Jamaica, “consulting” for his old friend Nathan, whose business—smuggling Cuban cigars from Jamaica into the U.S.—had run into a spot of trouble with one of the local protection rackets.   “Sam? Can you talk?”   “To you, my love, always.” Even his voice sounded suntanned, Elena thought.   “Listen—something’s come up at the office. I’ve got to go to Paris this afternoon, and then Nice. It’s a client who’s put in a claim for stolen diamonds, and Frank wants me to check things out.”   “You want me to come? I’m nearly done here. Another day or two of twisting arms and kissing ass should do it. Why don’t we meet in Marseille? I’ll call Francis and tell him to expect us.” Their good friend Francis Reboul had been a generous host over the years, and he was always happy to see them.   “That would be great. God, am I sick of the insurance business.”   There was a pause before Sam’s reply. “Give it up. Send me out to work and become a lady of leisure.”   Elena was prevented from pursuing this seductive suggestion by the arrival of the driver. “Got to go. I’ll call you from Paris.”   In the car, she went over their brief conversation. Was Sam serious? She wasn’t always sure. He had wanted her to come down to Jamaica with him, but work had made that impossible, a disappointment for them both. One day soon, she promised herself, you’ve got to get a life. A new life. According to Air France, she had ten hours and forty-five minutes to think about it before arriving in Paris.   As a small consolation, she was in business class. Comfortable surroundings and a decent glass of chilled Chablis restored her spirits enough to do a little homework, and she opened the folder of clippings that Frank Knox had given her.   The thefts were listed in chronological order, starting in 2002 with a relatively modest haul, valued at three million euros, from a jeweler in Cannes. In 2005, two million from a jeweler in Saint-Tropez. In 2009, fifteen million from Cartier in Cannes. In 2010, seven million from a jewelry wholesaler near Marseille. In 2013, a million from the safe in a Cannes hotel bedroom, a two-million-euro necklace stolen during a celebrity party at the Cannes Film Festival, and, to top them all, one hundred and three million from an exhibition of “Extraordinary Diamonds” in, yet again, Cannes. Elena was shaking her head in disbelief as she put down the folder. All that money for fragments of what one article had described as metastable allotropes of carbon.   Much to Sam’s relief, Elena’s taste in jewelry was limited to Mexican silver and old gold. She had seen far too many diamond necklaces on the wattled necks of elderly socialites, and this had effectively cured her of diamond envy. As she had once said to Sam, she would prefer to put that kind of money into something practical, like a town house in Paris and a Bentley. Or the house they had seen on their last visit to Marseille. A friend of Francis Reboul’s had shown it to them: it was small, built in the early 1920s, and perched on a spur of rock. They had instantly fallen in love with it. The sweeping view of the Mediterranean was enough on its own, but there were other attractions. It was a short and picturesque walk from Reboul’s home at Le Pharo, and an even shorter stroll would take them to the delights of Le Petit Nice, whose three Michelin stars made it Marseille’s most decorated restaurant.   The asking price for the house was, as Sam had said, enough to make a billionaire’s eyes water. But they had to have it. Sam raided what he called his slush fund, Elena sold her stocks, and long-distance negotiations between L.A. and the owner’s lawyer in Marseille began. And continued. And went on. And on. The problem was that the proprietor, a seventy-five-year-old widow from Paris, had thought it necessary to obtain the agreement of her extended family to the sale. Children had to be consulted. Grandchildren had to be considered. Even cousins, who under French law might have had some distant claim to the proceeds, could not be ignored. Back and forth went proposals and counterproposals between members of the family until Elena and Sam had almost given up.   A ray of hope had finally come the previous week in the form of a letter from the owner’s lawyer. It was possible that the sale could proceed as soon as he had received written confirmation he was awaiting from the family that the sale would not provoke legal complications. Sam had called Reboul with the news, and he had agreed to contact the lawyer and try to move things along. And that was where the matter stood, promising but unresolved.   Thoughts of the house turned to thoughts of the future. A place in Marseille, however idyllic it might be, was of little use to someone who was stuck in a Los Angeles office. Elena had often wondered how long she could put up with her job, even though it paid very well. These last two years, she would have left several times had it not been for her loyalty to Frank Knox. Now that he was retiring, Elena could leave with a clear conscience. Yes, she thought, Frank’s retirement was definitely a signal for action. She closed her eyes and lay back in her seat, her head filled with thoughts of life with the Mediterranean as a neighbor.

Young Sam and Elena are back in the South of France to renovate their newly purchased house and investigate the theft of millions of dollars of diamonds from a private home which shows no signs of forced entry. Along the way there is much eating and drinking and socializing with the wealthy in this sun soaked land. There is also an interesting explanation of the French passion for boules. While the mystery of who stole the damonds is thin it is all great fun and makes a perfect beach or plane read.

8 of 9 people found the following review helpful. The Diamond Caper By Sandra In this tale, Sam Levitt and Elena Morales are involved in yet another mystery. Diamonds are missing from the very wealthy mansions in the Cote D’Azur, France, and they are on the scene to check it out. No forced entries are found in the houses. No alarms were set off in these highly armed homes. It’s the perfect mystery. This is a classic Mayle mystery! There are plenty of vivid descriptions of French scenes, French traditions, and French foods and wines. Oh, yes, and then there’s the mystery. If you have never read Peter Mayle’s mysteries, there is just one warning. Much of the book is dedicated to beautiful France and its wonderful people, not to the mystery. I loved every moment of this book! His humor and his charming characters steal my heart every time! If you are looking for a heavy-duty mystery, this may not be the book for you. If you want a glimpse into a world of simple pleasures, this might be your cup of café au lait!

He needs to retire Sam and Elena and get back to writing books with a plot. Hotel Pastis, A Good Year, All Things Considered, etc. were pleasant reads. the Diamond Caper is not.

The collection is very brief but there are aspects of her poems that are endearing. The thoughts are uncomplicated and sincere, and one of the finest aspects of her writing is to include just a touch of humor that balances the emotional content of the poems. The following is an example of her art:The Knight of My DreamsI do not go out on Friday night.I sit at home and I wait.I wait for the knight of my dreams. To arrive.I wait and I wait for the one,That when he appearsAll my dreams will come true,All the pain will be gone,All the daily graynesswill be covered with sparks of joy,And everything will be wonderful. When he finally arrives,I will open the door,And say:"Why do you always have to belate?”This is a little celebration for Revital – not only in that it is her debut publication, but also it brings joy and warm feelings with her readers. It is potent, as it reminds me, as the father of a daughter, of how complexly sensitive a woman can be, and, as the father of a son, how deeply sensitive a man can be as well. It saddens me that we who love a child might also be the cause of her or his pain. Revital’s voice, however, is the resilience that each of us needs to surmount the painful wounds. She attributes her triumph to her feelings for her lover and partner, but it must have started with her, or at least she had to be receptive, and perhaps also it partakes of her parental heritage and will be their parental bequest.

THREE ESSAYS ON AREAS AFFECTING SCIENCE AND RELIGION By Steven H Propp Baden Powell (1796-1860) was an English mathematician and Church of England priest. He was also prominent as a liberal theologian who put forward advanced ideas about evolution. He held the Savilian Chair of Geometry at the University of Oxford from 1827 to 1860. He wrote in the Preface to this 1855 book, "The three following essays, though somewhat connected in subject, are yet each distinct and complete in themselves, having been originally composed at different times and with separate objects." [NOTE: page numbers below refer to a 503-page paperback edition.]He states, "The unity of sciences is not impaired, but insured and promoted, by those mutations which any of its branches may seem to have undergone. All real science is in a state of perpetual change. These changes have now and then been fundamental and revolutionary, and similar fluctuations are perpetually going on in lesser details. But this in no way makes science itself unstable or fluctuating. The change is always of one character, and that no other than the very nature of the inductive philosophy requires: a change from anomaly to regularity, from heterogeneity to analogy, from confusion to order, from interruption to continuity, from artificial dogmatism to the simplicity of nature." (Pg. 59)He says, "the earth, during all these incalculably long past periods, was nevertheless in a state of preparation for man's habitation; and thus, although the planets may now be destitute of inhabitants, they may possibly be only undergoing similar changes anticipatory to a similar result; and thus, if the uninhabited state of the planets be admitted, we must still enlarge our ideas; we must embrace in our view not merely the PRESENT moment of time, but the whole expanse of the past and the future, and thus regard all worlds as equally RELATED, actually or prospectively, to the destinies of moral and intelligent beings." (Pg. 229)Later, he adds, "The earth certainly was for myriads of ages destitute of human beings; it existed, therefore, in vain for man. Hence, it is an undeniable parallel, if the planets are now uninhabited, and therefore useless, so was the earth for an unlimited number of ages in past epochs. If the one be a contradiction to final causes, and to be rejected as inconsistent with the Divine beneficence, so must the other be: yet this other we know to be the fact." (Pg. 261)He rejects "the monstrous assumption, that because the privileges of redemption are granted to the inhabitants of this earth, they are therefore NOT GRANTED to those of any other worlds... it may be asked in vain what particle of proof can be alleged for denying [redemption], with respect to the possible inhabitants of other worlds? Let those who propose this objection propose a single argument from the reason of the case... or a single passage from the New Testament in which such limitation or exclusion is asserted... But this they do not attempt, nor do they seem to perceive that the attempt is necessary to establish their cases." (Pg. 289-290)He observes, "some of the arguments most commonly adduced, whether in support of the 'immutability of species'... or against their 'mutability' as 'contrary to experience,' or in favour of interruptions of natural order from apparent gaps in the geological series, are all destitute of foundation, fallacious, and untenable. On the other hand... there is still no POSITIVE EVIDENCE to establish [transmutation] as a demonstrated theory. Yet as a mere philosophical conjecture, the idea of transmutation of species under adequate changes of condition, and in incalculably long periods of time, seems supported by fair analogy and probability." (Pg. 425-426)Of attempts to harmonize the Bible with science, he notes, "Most rational persons now acknowledge the failure of the various attempts to reconcile the difficulty by verbal interpretation: they have learnt to see that the 'six days of thousands of years' have, after all, no more correspondence with any thing in geology than with any sane interpretation of the text. And that the 'immense period in the beginning,' followed by a recent literal great catastrophe and final reconstruction in a week, is, if possible, more strangely at variance with science, Scripture, and common sense... they proceed altogether on wrong grounds and in a wrong direction, and thus remain under the domain of the same radically mistaken prepossessions, which lead to not less unhappy misconceptions on other allied topics... [they should] learn to apprehend clearly the distinct grounds on which science and Christian belief respectively repose." (Pg. 458-459)This book will be of interest to those studying the history of religious reactions to science.

By Michael Melcher I was actually looking for a straightforward set of plot summaries summaries that I could read prior to attending an opera performance. As a reference, however, this book falls way short of the mark. In Kindle format, at least, it is almost impossible to go from the table of contents which is in paragraph form directly to a specific opera. Furthermore, I bought this book prior to attending a performance of La Traviata, and found that there was actually no prot summary given. Instead, I was informed that the story essentially follows the plot for the French play, Camille. Bravo...I guess I am now looking for a book on plots of the plays. My recomendation is that you don't waste your money. Amazon lists two other offerings related to describing the plots of the operas and they are free.

Beyond Dna: Inheriting Spiritual Strength from the Women in Your Family Tree

Who is your hero? Is she a politician? An actress or artist? Is she a spirited evangelist at your church? We all have strong, female role models that we look up to, admire, and respect; however, most of those role models exist outside the framework of our families. What about our own mothers, grandmothers, great-grandmothers, and beyond? What heroic traits exist in our own hereditary lineages, and why aren't we more aware of them?

Author Selena Post spent seven years researching her ancestry; Beyond Dna: Inheriting Spiritual Strength from the Women in Your Family Tree is the culmination of her findings. Post looked at fifteen women in her lineage, and by observing their lives-and the historical events in the background-she was able to understand their spiritual strengths and weaknesses, as well as how both affected their lives and the lives of their offspring.

It's important to gain insight from those we know and love. Although not a guidebook for family tree research, Beyond Dna shows Post's process as she discovered the inspirational lives of her ancestors. Post's newfound knowledge changed her life and taught her how to live as a godly woman. What spiritual gifts exist in your family, and how will your legacy affect the young women to come?

About the Author

Two years before men walked on the moon, Selena Post began her career in aerospace at Houston's Johnson Space Center. Three decades later, she had specialized in computer security and managed a program that received national recognition. With each job assignment, her tasks increasingly included motivating coworkers toward excellence. Career achievements, even in rocket science, benefit mankind in this earthly, temporal life where everything will end.

A Christian since the age of ten, she sought a unique venue to inspire women toward more eternal goals. Women can influence countless generations by attaining personal spiritual strength, then providing positive spiritual leadership for their children and grandchildren.

Seeking role models for her own spiritual journey, she discovered evidence of faith among her ancestral women. By studying the lives of her ancestors, and seeking evidence of their worship, Bible study, and prayer habits, she learned how they endured life's challenges. By evaluating the evidence of faith in previous generations, Selena found successful women to emulate. Inspired by what she found, Selena insightfully motivates women to supplement traditional genealogical research to identify their own spiritual history.

With this book, documenting stories of fifteen women in her own ancestry, she describes an engaging process for women to learn of the spiritual giants in their past, then provide spiritual guidance for the eternal benefit of future generations. Selena provides insights to facilitate genealogical research while encouraging spiritual stamina among her readers.

Selena has retired from aerospace four times, and lives in Houston, Texas, where she attends Second Baptist Church.

It was obvious that the deep faith of the females honored in this book was passed on from generation to generation. I believe readers will be encouraged to be more aware of how their behavior is observed and duplicated by others, and also encouraged to learn more about their own family's history. The author's talent for research was mind boggling.

An Excellent Read By newbeehive I had a friend give me this book to read, and I must admit, my first thought was that it might not be something that I could relate to in my own life, as I had few spiritual mentors in my family as I was growing up. As I began to read it, however, the Lord used the very weaknesses of some I read about, to encourage me to see beyond the weaknesses in my own family and to appreciate the women God had placed in my life over the years. Strength sometimes comes from being at our lowest ebb, and I learned much from reading this wonderful collection. The author portrayed each lady in such a way that I felt I knew each of them by the end of the chapters. I was so touched by it, I have purchased my own copy and plan to share it with others!

The most important statement in the book was made bythe author when she stated that her own mother did the best she knew how and she realized her mother was the mother God had given her. Thatreally made me do some soul searching.

As a young professional woman, Kelley Corallo appeared to have it all.

An excellent student through both high school and college, she was the perfect image of the girl next door. She seemed to juggle a budding career and a full social life with ease…But nothing was quite as it seemed. In fact, she was falling apart.

After months of ignoring the signs and symptoms that something was wrong—and attempting to self-medicate with alcohol—Kelley experienced a psychotic break that landed her in the psychiatric ward.

Wide Awake tells the harrowing story of Kelley’s eight-year struggle to understand her diagnosis and addictions, including the ways in which they masked past traumas and prevented her from becoming her true self.

Written in a bold, vivid style, this memoir perfectly evokes the isolation, confusion, and fracture of a person in an acute phase of mental illness. Kelley's story will ultimately empower anyone who has ever felt hopeless, misunderstood, and alone, but been too afraid of mental illness's stigma to take the first step toward getting help.

Kelley did an amazing job at putting on paper the complexities of her mind and her daily challenges, in a tender and hopeful way. She teaches us about mania, depression, medications, addictions and all the other things associated with being bipolar, simply and transparently. 2007 was a horrible year, followed by even more difficult years, but she truly has grown and blossomed into a very wise and loving person.

Eric Miles Williamson has collected glowing critical praise for this novel, which Newsday hailed as "exceptional" and "a remarkable literary debut". East Bay Grease is an authentic look at surviving an impoverished and neglected childhood by whatever means necessary.

In late 1960s Oakland, young T-Bird Murphy's life is more miserable and frightening than most kids can imagine. His mother spends her time with the local Hell's Angels, drenched in alcohol and drugs. His father is a volatile ex-con. Struggling in a community plagued by gang violence and racial feuding, T-Bird picks up a trumpet and finds solace in the soulful wailing of jazz music.

This powerful novel pulls no punches, offering a rare glimpse into a world typically ignored. Narrator Johnny Heller beautifully captures the transformation of T-Bird from a scared kid into a confident, trumpet-blowing young man.

6 of 6 people found the following review helpful. great first novel By A Customer I read East Bay Grease with growing admiration for the language, courage and honesty. By the time I finished the book, I had tremendous respect for the writer. That he lived through the world he describes is a triumph. That he subsequently wrote such an eloquent novel is a testament to the power of art, and to Mr. Williamson as an artist.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. A Child Transcends Hell By T. Hover I found this novel exhilarating. T-Bird Murphy is the fat smart kid without a father in a dangerous neighborhood, with an abusive mother who eventually abandons him. His first job is to learn to survive in a situation in which he's often got no food, the power to his home is cut off, and gang members are preying on him daily. He learns to fight back against the people who are victimizing him and stop the physical torment, but the victory is emotionally and morally complicated, and ultimately teaches him empathy. He grows further in his understanding of people and the world around him as he starts to become an artist--a trumpet player in a Mexican band.Williamson borrows from Joyce's Dubliners and Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man in depicting the world and events of the novel from the perspective of T-Bird's own changing level of emotional and intellectual maturity. Some reviewers here have mentioned that in parts of the novel, the emotional reaction to tragedy seems muted or absent--I believe what they're missing is that Williamson is filtering the experience through young T-Bird's head. A 10 or 12-year-old poor kid in a violent neighborhood tends not to react to events with poetry. Instead, T-Bird's emotional reactions to events often come out as subsequent action. I found it a real treat to be trusted to get into this character's head this way.As T-Bird grows, Williamson's language changes and develops into full-out poetry, at the same time as T-Bird's emotional reactions get more direct and his understanding of the world matures and gains complexity. The novel ends with an homage to Joyce's story The Dead, in a scene in which T-Bird achieves transcendence over the negative forces around him. It's a beautiful riff on another artist's work for the purpose of a completely different kind of effect. When I closed the book, I felt blown away. This is one of those books that reveals more on every reading. I recommend it highly.

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. "East Bay Grease" Rings with Realism By Hal E. Whiteside Eric Miles Williamson does a great job of describing real life for the have-nots. Most people, especially today's youth, don't know what it's like to have to work like T-Bird had to in order to survive on his own. Forced, as he expected and accepted, to leave home the day after graduating from high school. T-Bird is much smarter and more talented than his environment and low expectatious family will allow. Williamson gives us insight to what the Oakland scene is really like and how difficult it is foreven an intelligent kid to escape.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. this is a woodworking book, not poetry...a fraud By H. I don't know how this got past Amazon, but I guess that's what customer reports are for (I'm going to call them about this), but this is NOT a book of poetry by Sarojini Naidu, or indeed a book of poetry at all.It is a book about woodworking, with woodworking diagrams all throughout, perhaps as some sort of joke, or a lame way to try to make $0.99. people are so strange. So please don't buy this if you're looking for poetry.

From the Inside Flap Playing Cards are the most globally recognized artifact, virtually every home has some decks of Cards. These Cards were invented by wise-men in the 12th/13th Centuries (A.D.) to conceal an ancient Astrological system. Then they gave them to the ordinary people, to play games with, by which they hoped that the symbolism that they had encoded would remain intact. Which is what has happened, today's Cards have very few differences from their originals - the printing and technical standards have improved but that is about all. In fact, any changes in the design or format of these cards has been met with commercial failure and total non- acceptance by the general public. Although this is basically true, there is an exception when it comes to the Court Cards. Originally, these were single figures with full bodies and legs, however, by the 19th Century they had become double-ended, with just the upper half of their design being shown; it is said this was done to facilitate their recognizability when held fan-like in one's hand, the same reason for adding the indices in the top and bottom corners. However, there is an important point regarding the 12 Court Cards in that they have "Dual Rulerships" within the ASTRO- CARDS System having both a Number/Planet-Suit/Element and a Zodiacal Sign function.

The ancient system that these wise-men were trying to protect was a complete Astrological Data Bank and Operating System, compiled in Atlantean days and preserved in Egypt after the collapse of Atlantis. The FOUR Suits are the Elements, FIRE, EARTH, AIR and WATER; the THIRTEEN Cards per Suit encompass both the SOLAR-12 and the LUNAR-13. The total number of Cards - 52 - equals the number of weeks in a year, when multiplied by the SACRED number 7, we get 364 (also when the number 13 is multiplied by 28, the number of Lunar days in a month, we get the same 364), add the JOKER which represents 5/4 or 1 1/4, we get 365 1/4, the average number of days in a Solar year. It has been found that the Cards not only have an Astrological function but that they can be applied to any number of occult systems, either divinatory and/or cosmological, which brings us to this book.

From the Back Cover A facsimile edition of a rare 1908 Metaphysical publication on the Pyramid Symbology hidden within our regular PLAYING CARDS. Also includes information on other PYRAMID SYMBOLS, such as the SQUARE and COMPASS, the MALTESE CROSS, and DICE amongst others. Plus the KEYSTONE as related to the SPHINX.

Fascinating unusual subjects By PattyLu One subject in this book is the origin of the designs of the kings, queens and jacks in our usual playing cards. It seems that every tiny item in the picture has a history and meaning which I found interesting. Also covered is information on the construction of the pyramids, along with other subjects.

It's author believes that nothing in her big fat Bible says a saint has to be a wet blanket. It's OK to tickle somebody's feet and be holy the same day. Think three or four more. Go have a nice day. Tomorrow sample it again.

By Amazon Customer Provocative, disturbing, rewarding, I cannot believe anyone reading Bawdy and Soul will come away with no opinion. I read through it more than once, and it hit me differently each time. I wanted to compose my comments, but it took me some reflection to put it to words.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Powerful, Poignant, Playful Praise! By Patrick “Bawdy” is defined as, “humorously indecent talk or writing”. But do not let the “bawdy” half of Jane Wenninger’s “Bawdy and Soul” throw you! This is no regular form of bawdy. We almost need a new word; one that can captures the reverent playfulness that “The Rev” delights the reader with in this very personal collection of poems and flash fiction. After all, does “Bawdy” really capture the fun of the good man “doing the romantic wrestle with his chubby church wife”? There is nothing offensive in the carnal carnival of marriage!Bawdy was also no doubt chosen by The Rev due to the linguistic play on body. Selections like “The Invisible Me” and “Senility” reveal a woman who is so at ease with her genuine self, physically and spiritually, as she rhythmically echoes the words of St. Paul, “Therefore we do not lose heart. Though outwardly we are wasting away, yet inwardly we are being renewed day by day.” Here and in many places in this erudite gem, Jane presents theological truth as doctrinal dance.“Bawdy and Soul” also reveals the character of a woman who has learned much from personal pain, gain, struggle, and reward. Read and re-read “”A Serpent. God’s Gift.” Her approach in life is somewhat like those wild storm chasers who drive around and get all excited when they come across Cumulonimbus. She discovers wonder in the center of the tornado, finding the view from the inside well worth the damage on the outside. I felt compassion as I read allusion to physical abuse. I felt marital bliss at the deeply spiritual commitment between this woman and her husband, and saw the glow of the familial treasure hid away in her heart. Here are a few quotes from her work that I will think often upon, Lord willing! “What transforms belief into faith is loving God enough to do what He wants.” “Come to the Master’s feet”. “Replace yourself to surpass yourself.” “Temporary trouble begets glory.” “I’ll practice love, ‘til I share it right” (my absolute favorite!).The back cover of the book offers that in addition to other personal responses to these writings, “You may even deepen your spiritual craving”. And that it did for me. It made me want to love more, trust more, and share more. Buy one for you, and ten to give away!

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. I was pretty eager to dive into this collection of work By WZL I recently received a complimentary copy of Bawdy and Soul by Jane Wenninger in return for an honest review. “The Rev” and I have been bumping into each other at the same writing communities for about a year now, and I have had the pleasure of experiencing her work in the past.I was pretty eager to dive into this collection of work. Bawdy and Soul is a great book of poetry and prose, filled with good laughs and some quirky stories regarding faith and family. It’s a book that could probably touch a few people through its lighthearted content, even those who are seeking spiritual guidance through another person’s experience. Wenninger’s writing is charismatic and heartwarming. Was there anything to dislike about the book? While reading, I put my personal beliefs aside regarding faith as “The Rev” and I don’t necessarily see eye to eye. Her faith makes her strong, and I got a little smile out of the more religious-based poems. Bawdy and Soul isn’t a full sermon at church. It’s good natured. It can and probably will touch you in some way. The book is just the right amount of soul, and I’m happy to have had the chance to experience it.
