By Chloe Although I do not often read poetry, I've read all of Woody Barlow's novels, thusly was eager to see how he handled poetry. A Voice From the Void is a wonderful compilation of beautiful words that made me think. From Vietnam to current day use of drones, you may not agree with all viewpoints expressed, but all are poignant and the flow from one piece to the next felt flawless.Barlow put together an eclectic mix of vignettes that broach such a wide variety of subjects, readers will surely find something special. Succinctly written words within each piece were quite touching and certainly left this reader pondering the past and future.Of the fifty pieces, I had several favorites, but off hand remember One of Many Lovers, Mother, The Veteran, The Party, Serenity, and of course, Writing. If you love poetry you'll be pleasantly surprised, and if you haven't indulged in prose for sometime, A Voice From the Void will awaken your poetic soul.

I read it from cover to cover three times, and each time, it left me in a deeply introspective mood. Woody Barlow bared his soul with his poetry, and it stuck a resonating chord in mine. He covered a wide range of topics in a way that evoked emotional memories from my past, especially about Viet Nam, lost loves and loved ones, the wonders and beauty of nature, and empathy for those less fortunate than I was. I highly recommend it.
