M. B. Leibowitz grew up in a warmly loving family that chose to live in places where every person was treated fairly according to his or her actions rather than appearance, ancestry, religion, or life status. He chose his friends accordingly.
He attended public schools with strict standards, especially for writing. Whether classwork, homework, tests, or term papers (even for science subjects), any error in grammar, spelling, or punctuation cost points. Essays were longhand (pen on paper), and crossouts were frowned upon. Beyond the classroom, his guidance and inspiration came from reading well-written literature — classic poetry, fiction and science fiction, biographies, history, philosophy, and several sciences. All these influences show in his writing. It is well beyond sixth grade English, but you won't need a dictionary to understand him.
It took a lifetime of love and loss both to know what to put into this book and to acquire the skills and software needed to adapt pictures for the purpose. It’s a fascinating read, mainly because it’s not what you’re expecting, I guarantee. It’s much meatier than a run-of-the-mill book of love poetry.It’s easy to tell that this work was put together with extraordinary care, with beautiful illustrations and background material that add even more layers to the poetry. Photos and biographies of poets are included. M. B. Leibowitz’s own poems are wonderful additions to this work. You have the choice to skip all the background material and read just the poems, but you’ll be missing a lot.Please don’t be misled by the faded-looking text in the “Look Inside” feature. It must have been poorly scanned. The printed book is far higher quality.For transparency, let me say that I was the proofreader for this book and was given a hard copy after publication. Working on this book was a pleasure, and the book will remain one of my treasured possessions.Anyone who wants a beautiful book of poetry dealing with love and life, look no further. Get a copy of this book. Enjoy it with a good cup of coffee and a box of tissues, and share it with the people you love.
