It's the 9th of August 1990. The sky is clear, and the view from Mount Agassiz East Ridge in Utah's High Uintah Mountains is stunning, several lake-filled basins were in full view. Suddenly the air explodes. A bolt of lightning struck Layne Oliver in the back of the head, hurtling him twenty feet down the two hundred-foot cliff face of Agassiz's East Ridge. Pebble in a Pond is about the ripples, "good and bad," created by the decisions we make, the actions we take, even the words we say. The day Layne was struck by the lightning bolt he went against his own rule of always following his gut instinct and didn't leave the area. His life seemed to have always been full of struggle. Reflecting back, he realized that each challenge prepared him for the next one, that there were always good things to learn from the bad experiences. Life is full of challenges; however, you gotta have a reason to survive that is more powerful than the reasons you may have to give up.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Inspiring and interesting story By M. Zodda I'm friends with Layne Oliver and have known him for a number of years. I didn't get a copy of this book from Layne as I didn't want to be obligated to write a review if I didn't like it. That said, I very much enjoyed the book and found it to be a compelling story and easy read. I recommend the book and trust that most will find Layne's story to be inspiring and interesting. Many memoirs are written by famous people who seem larger than life and whose life story can't really connect with regular people who lead common lives. What Layne's book brings home is that a regular Joe, like you or me (or Layne), can be put in the situation where our only choices are to overcome or give up. Layne let's us know that we, too, can overcome no matter how daunting the problem. He also reminds us of the second and third order effects of our actions and inspires us to be our best selves. Layne's story is not heavy on moralizing and not overtly religious. Layne loves to talk and reading his book is like sitting down and having a conversation with this impressive man.
0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Don't buy it By H. Droitsch I thought it was poorly written, and dwelt overlong on the writers experiences as an electrician in the National Guard. His passages on climbing and testing out equipment, even the detailed medical events, were more informative. He came across as extremely arrogant, even while he was undergoing life saving operations. Someone in our book club recommended this book without having read any of it, and she ended up apologizing to the group (while laughing hysterically) for her choice. It should also be said that the author used the exclamation mark almost 3 or 4 times a page, sometimes more often. I suspect that he either self published, or dictated it to someone else, Either way, there was next to no editing. Note also that I was the only one who purchased it (unfortunately) and since it was $22 in paperback I passed it around to others in the book club so we wouldn't all have to bear the expense of a book we didn't really like to begin with.

It is good to know we are not alone when it comes to heartache and tragedy. It flowed easily and will stick with me for a long time to come. I admire Mr. Oliver for his willingness so share his life with the world. I have already recommended this book to over 25 of my friends and family.
