The author’s first cat, Taxi, taught her to keep her chin up as she watched him struggle to live. The fan blades of a swamp cooler had hacked him almost to death. Thus begins her memoir of seven decades of learning from cats who have taught her that the impossible becomes the possible when she follows their example.

Love etches its way around the words and the pages, a love that never descends into the mushlands of sentimentality or melodrama. It is clear-eyed from the opening lines: “Taxi gave up one of his nine lives to the blades of a swamp cooler that almost hacked him to death. He was our first live-in cat, Papa’s and mine.”Rhutasel Jones is a seasoned author, who keeps her writing tight, heightening emotions with her poetic style. There is something immeasurably moving about her memoir, as though grief always hovers, threatening love, yet love comes to the rescue each time. She is especially powerful describing childhood and adolescent years and her relationship with her father, Papa. She is wonderfully poignant, guiding us through the nuances of grief, whether it is for a beloved cat or for a family member. What did she learn from her cats over seven decades? I will leave that for the author to describe, the silences of her feline companions that always say more than if they were able to talk. I highly recommend this memoir, immersed in the beauty and ambiance of the American Southwest, from Abilene, Texas to Albuquerque, New Mexico, to the towns south of the border.

What a wonderful teacher she had; she was soon learning how to gain perspective from the personalities of her cats in reflection of her own life's story, weaving several stories within the story. Her storytelling is truly a gift. Shortcomings become strengths and personalities are then so well understood, conquering what others may see in her cats as weaknesses. You won't be dissappointed with the intertwinings of her life and lessons learned, connecting the reader with her journey. Unpreditable.

Reading "The Teacher Who Learned from Cats" is like sitting around and listening to family stories By Dyanna Monahan Reading "The Teacher Who Learned from Cats" is like sitting around and listening to family stories, you want it to keep going on. The love shared by this family for each other and for their cats is wonderful. This story from life as a young girl with Papa and Taxi to her life with David and Wizard and Larry, Honda and Suzuki is a journey filled with love. This book is a great read for everyone, cat lover or not.
