Shakespeare (1564-1616) was the greatest playwright and poet in the English language. This edition of Shakespeare’s "Hamlet" is from “The First Folio,” published posthumously in 1623. "Hamlet" was written in early 1600 and was set at Kronborg Castle in Elsinore, Denmark in the Late Middle Ages (14th–15th Centuries). Shakespeare’s telling of the story of Prince Hamlet was derived from several notable sources: • Books III and IV of "Gesta Danorum" (“History of the Danes,” 1200 CE) by Saxo Grammaticus (acquired surname because of his eloquent and flawless Latin); and • Volume 5 (1570 CE) of "Histoires Tragiques," a French translation of Saxo by François de Belleforest. Saxo’s "Gesta Danorum" was the first important work of Danish history and tells of the rise and fall of their great rulers. Saxo’s account of "Amleth" is thought to be the source for "Hamlet." In Saxo’s version, King Rorik appoints two brothers, Orvendil and Fengi, to rule Jutland. Orvendil weds the King’s beautiful daughter, Geruth, and they have a son, Amleth. Fengi, lusting after Orvendil’s new bride, kills his brother, marries Geruth and usurps the Danish throne. Subsequently, Amleth suspects his life is threatened and, in an attempt to prevent his murder, mimics madness. He seeks to revenge his father’s death and become the rightful ruler of Jutland. This annotated version of Shakespeare’s longest play has 297 endnotes that reference historical and mythological explanations as well as definitions of “Early Modern English.” The editor was determined to remain as close as possible to Shakespeare’s poetry and the timeless rhythm of his writing. Even though his stories are still relevant to 21st century audiences, he wrote for the seventeenth century Elizabethan audience, who had to have been familiar with the history and geography of Europe’s Middle Ages. He gave its less educated sword fights and its more educated a wealth of allegory and metaphor.

The Tragedy of HAMLET, Prince of Denmark (Annotated) by William Shakespeare, by Williiam Shakespeare

About the Author Arguably the greatest English-language playwright, William Shakespeare was a seventeenth-century writer and dramatist, and is known as the Bard of Avon. Under the patronage of Queen Elizabeth I, he penned more than 30 plays, 154 sonnets, and numerous narrative poems and short verses. Equally accomplished in histories, tragedies, comedy, and romance, Shakespeare s most famous works include Romeo and Juliet, Hamlet, Macbeth, King Lear, The Taming of the Shrew, and As You Like It.

Like many of his contemporaries, including Christopher Marlowe, Shakespeare began his career on the stage, eventually rising to become part-owner of Lord Chamberlain s Men, a popular dramatic company of his day, and of the storied Globe Theatre in London.

Extremely popular in his lifetime, Shakespeare s works continue to resonate more than three hundred years after his death. His plays are performed more often than any other playwright s, have been translated into every major language in the world, and are studied widely by scholars and students.

2 of 3 people found the following review helpful. You will be absorbed into the story By bernie This really is "The Tragical History of Hamlet Prince of Denmark" and not only the Prince but also his family. Not only his family but his friends. The tragedy started in the previous generation. Will it end with Hamlet? Many people are interested in dissecting underlying themes and read more into the characters actions than was probably intended. Many of phrases from Hamlet now challenge Bible for those popular quotes that no one remembers where they came from. The real fun is in just reading the story and as you find that it is not as foreign as you may have thought; you see many characters like these around you today.A synopsis, Old Hamlet conquered Old Fortinbras seizing Fortinbras' land. Now that Old Hamlet is dead, Young Fortinbras wants his land back and is willing to take it by force. Meanwhile back in Dänemark Prince Hamlet who is excessively grieving the loss of his father, the king, gets an interesting insight from his father's ghost. Looks like Old Hamlet was a victim of a "murder most foul"; it appears his mother and uncle were in cahoots on the murder. On top of that they even get married before the funeral meats are cold. The story is about Hamlet's vacillating as to what to do about his father's murder. However he does surprise many with his persistence and insight. You will find many great movie presentations and imitations of the story; this is an intriguing read but was really meant to be watched.William Shakespeare's Hamlet (Two-Disc Special Edition)
