It skillfully and beautifully brings together pairings of beloved works of art and writing, reminding us we are all influenced in the way we live our lives by the ways in which others live and express theirs. It's a great book for personal pleasure and for opening the eyes of others, shedding a new perspective on how we see and think. Recommend to all without reservation! A great gift!

A lovely book to own, but also perfect as a gift for someone who has an appreciation of the world of art and culture. I greatly enjoy opening the book at random pages and sampling a poem and painting.

“He could not stop what he was doing. It was either sex or suicide.” It’s often said that we will likely never understand how a person becomes a serial killer. However, I believe we can. In fact, we must, if we are ever going to find a way to stop the sexual abuse of children. But it’s not only the victims we want to save. We also want to stop our children from transforming themselves into killers. —From the Introduction Arthur Gary Bishop and Westley Allan Dodd had many things in common. They were both psychopathic pedophiles and prolific child molesters who eventually turned to killing their victims. Both were executed for their crimes at their own request. Most importantly, both desperately wanted to know one thing before they died: How did I become a serial killer? This book is an attempt to answer that question.

5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. Insightful. A great read! By "Why" Quest This is Dr. Carlisle second book in his “Development of the Violent Mind” series. The first book was “I’m Not Guilty” about Ted Bundy. Once again the author has helped me see how a child could grow up to be a serial killer. For most of us that’s a very tough thing to get our heads around. In this book, “The Mind of the Devil”, Dr. Carlisle delves into two cases involving the molesting and killing of children. It’s tough reading about but so necessary to try and understand how something like this happens and hopefully gain some insight in preventing it.Dr. Carlisle takes us through the development of the two child killers, Art Gary Bishop and Westley Allan Dodd, step by step. You can see the process and the different aspects that come into play. There are crossroads both Bishop and Dodd arrived at along the way and, regardless of their circumstances, they both made decisions that ultimately led to the murders; by their own free will.Bishop and Dodd are somewhat unique in that both plead guilty and wanted to be executed as soon as possible. You can even see Dodd saying so in court in clips available on YouTube. That has always intrigued me. Both wanted to understand how they came to be serial killers and you can tell they were as candid with Dr. Carlisle as they were capable of being. It makes for some very fascinating reading! Dr. Carlisle’s honest quest to understand and share what he has learned is very apparent and I applaud him for it. Thank you, Dr. Carlisle!

39 of 42 people found the following review helpful. Not the Best Edition By D. Scott This is a wonderful book for anyone with a taste for humorous fantasy. The stories are short and well written. There are no illustrations in this particular edition. Be aware of that, if you like the book enough, and consider finding a more robust printing to love and keep on a book shelf. Ultimately, though, any reader will find an extremely enjoyable read here.

34 of 40 people found the following review helpful. Stories with a moral AND interesting illustrations By A Customer This book gives interesting stories with a moral at the end of each story and has illustrations on each page. The stories vary in length but can be read quickly due to the author's writing style. While different from "Oz" books, these stories are still a lot of fun.

Everyone should read this classic book of American fairy tales

PDF Ebook The Divine Comedy / La Divina Commedia - Parallel Italian / English Translation, by Dante Alighieri, Henry Wadsworth Longfellow

This edition gives a side-by-side parallel translation of Dante's Divine Comedy using Longfellow's translation. The Divine Comedy is an epic poem written by Dante Alighieri between 1308 and his death in 1321. It is generally considered to be the preeminent work of Italian literature and one of the greatest works of world literature. The poem is written in the Tuscan dialect, and the poem helped establish this dialect as the standardized Italian language. The poem is divided into three parts: Inferno, Purgatorio, and Paradiso. At the superficial level, the poem describes Dante's travels through Hell, Purgatory, and Heaven; but at a deeper level, it ia an allegory of the soul's journey towards God. In order to articulate this journey towards God, Dante uses on medieval Christian theology and philosophy, especially Thomistic philosophy and the Summa Theologica of Thomas Aquinas. Longfellow's translation is considered to be the best translation, overall. Longfellow, being a poet himself, was able to create a flowing translation that has not been surpassed.

The Divine Comedy / La Divina Commedia - Parallel Italian / English Translation, by Dante Alighieri, Henry Wadsworth Longfellow

About the Author Dante Alighieri was born in 1265 in Florence to a family of minor nobility. He entered into Florentine politics in 1295, but he and his party were forced into exile in a hostile political climate in 1301. Taking asylum in Ravenna late in life, Dante completed his Divine Commedia, considered one of the most important works of Western literature, before his death in 1321.Henry Wadsworth Longfellow was born in 1807 in Portland, Maine, and he became a professor of modern languages at Harvard. His most famous narrative poems include The Song of Hiawatha, Paul Reveres Ride, "The Village Blacksmith," "The Wreck of the Hesperus." From his friend Nathaniel Hawthorne, Longfellow got a brief outline of a story from which he composed one of his most favorite poems, 'Evangeline'. The original story had Evangeline wandering about New England in search of her bridegroom. One of the first poets to take the landscape and stories of North America as his subjects, Longfellow became immensely popular all over the world, and he was the first American commemorated in the Poets Corner of Westminster Abbey. He was given honorary degrees at the great universities of Oxford and Cambridge, invited to Windsor by Queen Victoria, and called by request upon the Prince of Wales. He was also chosen a member of the Russian Academy of Sciences and of the Spanish Academy. He died on March 24, 1882.

From Library Journal Far away from his snowy Yukon adventures, London set this 1913 novel in the warmth of California's green hills. It follows Billy and Saxon Roberts, who, after becoming disillusioned with labor difficulties, strike out on the road north to find a place where they can live close to the land. 26 of 29 people found the following review helpful. WARNING! By mbystrytsky@hotmail.com This book is a reprint of the 1913 edition published by Cosmopolitan Magazine. IT IS NOT A COMPLETE VERSION. Some parts, I think the most typical for Jack London, are absent. (For example sport games and fighting in Weasel Park, Chapter IV, are not present in this edition.)I think the version can be used to comparative analysis by specialists in history of literature but if you want to take pleasure in reading I strongly recommend you to purchase another edition.

15 of 17 people found the following review helpful. What a great book!! By Dave I read this book after biking through a lot of the California towns London mentions. I pedaled through Glen Ellen and saw some of the missions. Since I am male, I could relate to the character of Billy. He is an early 20th century renaissance man. I never got bored with this book. It has a lot of personal meaning to me. I come from some of the "old stock" Billy and Saxon refer to. Tons of detail. I had to read it twice to get all the details. If you like northern California and want to know what it was like 100 years ago, read this.

11 of 12 people found the following review helpful. A Testament of Love By A Customer As in many of his books, Jack London enraptes the reader, but this time in a story of love. It is extremely refreshing because it shows the good side of true love without that sickening sweetness so many love stories have... I read this book a few years back and read it again just recently. I am SIXTEEN. This book is definetly one that many can enjoy, no matter your age.

It is about the slaves that lived on and about my Great x3 Grandmother's plantation in Richmond, Virginia.Sallie May uses the speech pattern of the African- Americans from the pre-Civil War south. Allot of this may sound degrading or racist by today's stranded. And I think in certain areas it is. But I cannot condemn her for conveying what was normal world view to her. This was written in the 1870's , years after the war ended. I am told that she wrote this in rebuttal to "Uncle Tom's Cabin".MER

“Bill, in A Gift To Self, has an incredible ability to touch the deeper threads, the soul, of life through his words. He reminds us that only through all the twists and turns of living does one truly find themselves.” – Timothy Welch of Recovery Reflections

It has taken over 8 years to create and compile the poems and stories that make up this book. Many of these stories and poems were inspired by work that was done with a client who was struggling with a life-threatening illness, a difficult loss, a destructive and seemingly impossible behavior in their lives that needed changing, or an issue of abuse or trauma. Thus, many of these poems and stories address the issue of being in recovery. However, all of the poems and stories have a spiritual element.

There are also poems and stories that speak to those who struggle with belief, trust, faith and hope. How does one find wholeness again? How does one learn to celebrate again? These and other existential questions are addressed throughout the book.

From the author: "This is clearly more than a book of poetry. My intention was to develop a book of material that would offer hope and inspiration to those who struggle with issues that keep them from knowing their best self."

A Gift to Self, by William Stephenson PhD

About the Author Dr. William Stephenson recently retired from the mental health field where he served in a variety of areas, including counseling those struggling with a life-threatening illness, people with complicated grief, as well as with the homeless and those with a chronic mental illness. His success in counseling was his commitment to the whole person and including or developing a support system for the client to better succeed. In addition to his private practice, Bill has also worked in the public sector and most recently for a large health insurance company, traveling all over the United States to bring a higher quality of mental health and recovery services to their constituents. Bill is married to Carol and together they are active in a local church. Many of his poems reflect his strong commitment to a faith-based way of life. Bill continues to speak and lecture on mental health and recovery which is also prevalent in his poems. Bill is writing a new book entitled, Conversations With My Soul: Uncommon Psalms. It will be published in 2016.

Bill has put together a wonderful collection of poems and short stories on life By JAXPO Dr. Bill has put together a wonderful collection of poems and short stories on life, love, success and defeat. Many of the poems will raise your emotion and tip your heartstrings as he describes the many difficulties that people endure on life’s path. The basis for much of his writing comes from his personal experience in leading people through the dilemmas of life. The central message that one gets when reading his work is that recovery works and that a new beginning is just ahead. It is a hard book to put down as many of the verses touch you on an emotional and spiritual basis and you want to read more. Thanks Bill for this very enjoyable book

The care that he takes in his work, and the stories he tells are, without a doubt, some of the most touching and heartfelt on the site. I’ve purchased his book and perused it, looking for signs of hope in the universe, a light in the darkness, that spark that seems to emanate from him… it’s all there. Bill has a special way of creating this spark to build and renew life’s fire, where earlier only small embers were smoldering from hope grown cold. He has a way of reaching into your heart and pulling out what little belief and desire you have left, warming it, and gently replacing it so that it can grow in its own home, safely, securely… and at its own pace.If you need hope, I wholeheartedly suggest you buy his book today.

Like touching a flower, if I hold it too long it will disintegrate in my hands. It took awhile to read the whole book because I wanted to savor each line. Each page awakened my soul, my senses, my life. I have written all over the pages as if I were going to answer a friend's letter. I wrote questions and then I wrote my own answers. It has become a journal in a master book. Dr. Stephenson's spirituality is without fear or judgment and his emphasis on forgiveness will apply to everyone who reads his book. I highly recommend this book to everyone.

But none of them are at the level of these old ones, i.e. Richters'. With this book and it's thorough, extremely clear and concise instruction, you'll be a complete pro in a few weeks. Also the quality of the book itself is astounding, not the reprints, thought. If you can, get the original book. Made to last lifetimes. They don't make them like these ones anymore.

When the anxiety of materialistic excess overcomes your soul, and you hear a cry from deep within, what do you do? Author Mark Kacik traveled the remote back roads of Asia in search of a peaceful mind, a deep understanding of self, and an alternative to his hectic and materialistic American lifestyle. Probing remote footpaths and following the breeze of his soul, Kacik serendipitously encounters Buddhist masters in out-of-the-way temples and monasteries, where he is given deep meditative exercises and lessons in awareness, consciousness, and mindful living. Follow Kacik’s spiritual odyssey as he travels through the timeless deserts of India, the frigid Himalayas of Nepal, scorching Vietnamese jungles, and the culturally rich Korean mountains and has surprising and sometimes terrifying adventures. Meet the incredible people he comes face-to-face with who lead lives so amazingly different from his own. Caves, Huts, and Monasteries is more than a travelogue: The vibrant descriptions of faraway jungles, mountains, and deserts, along with jewels of advice gifted from masters of various Buddhist traditions, speak to the heart of spiritual seekers of any faith tradition. Kacik shares the teachings that affected him most deeply; those that helped evolve his perception of self, and taught him that peace can settle in the wailing soul that remains open and still. Because all of us get stuck; all of us sometimes want to scream; all of us have heard our deeper self crying for more substance in our lives. "

I must say I was pleasantly surprised and found my self unable to put the book down. It was such an adventure into the Asian world of Temples, Monasteries and other prayer practices in the Buddhist traditions. I must say I did not realize there are so many different forms. I practice Centering Prayer or also called Contemplative Prayer. Mark's book helped me to more focus and deepen my prayer experience. Mark visits about four or five counties exploring their temples and monasteries so you get a real flavor of the many forms of prayer practiced in the Buddhist traditions of that area. You learn to quiet your mind on a deeper level so the universe or God as you perceive can talk to you or just be in the quiet. In our everyday hectic American lives this is a refreshing book to read. Highly recommended.

Schmidt This amazing book is an adventure story of Mark's soulful process toward enlightenment. His words so inspired me to practice with determination. His easy to understand explanation of Buddhist teachings and terms were very helpful in broadening my religious world view.

Engaging first person experience of the many faces of Buddhism in Asia By Tom Stoddard Caves, Huts and Monasteries was a surprise Christmas gift in 2015 from friends who have been spiritual partners for the past fifteen years. I’m usually a bit dubious about books that others select for me and happily I was amazed how beautifully this work fit into my own spiritual practice. I have been a serious meditator since 2001 and have practiced Vipassana meditation since 2009. After reading the introduction I wanted to dive in and push right through to the end and yet something told me to take a slow deliberate journey of discovery as Mark did on his many months’ travels. I used the book as a mini retreat and read one chapter every several days and allowed the truths to settle in and be diffused into my daily living and interactions with others. That approach was well worth the patience and yielded wonderful results in my practice: a greater appreciation of the many faces of Buddhism and a deeper understanding of the idea “one goal many paths”. Mark writes what could be called a travelogue on one level and indeed it is an exciting adventure of navigating many different countries, societies, customs and Buddhist practices. I’m a traveler myself and I found his level of detail about the people, places and practices fascinating and richly rewarding. On the other hand it is a handbook, a guide to the many spiritual practices and the wisdom of a number of Buddhist schools that have evolved over two millennia. I believe that the more we delve into these different schools the more we realize that at their core the teachings of Gotama the Buddha are there: Perform no unwholesome actions, perform only wholesome actions and purify the mind. This is a joyous read and perhaps the best non-fiction book I’ve read in many years. As I understand it the question Mark asks of himself and perhaps we ask ourselves, is it possible to practice in Caves, Huts and Monasteries with highly evolved masters, developing calm and insight, and then return to hectic, active lives in the west and maintain the practice or does one need to become a monk or a nun and live apart. He does not give us his answer, so I can only hope that he will give us his answer in a follow on book.

Long This was a very interesting work done by the author in his quest to find the where about of a certain play and sonnet writer, the great William Shakespeare. So much research had to be done in this information gathering and being that it was pre computer age it had to have been a daunting task. I learned a few things reading this, it was not always merry, in merry ole England at the time Shakespeare lived. It was “war” and not on the world stage but the theater stage. Rival theaters going at each other, lots of what we call today “mudslinging” being done by the different houses. So where was Shakespeare, doing his best to mingle with the important people, taking inspiration for his work from conversations held by the fireside with cronies at a favorite pub, more or less. It never dawned on me that the discourse in one of his plays was the actual way people talked back in the day. Of course, I should have known. I think the best piece of information gleaned from this gem is that the author made note of Shakespeare starting out writing comedy, then tragedy and ending up somewhere in the middle. This would be an especially fine read for someone that dotes on Shakespeare and his age and can't get enough of him.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. A vital resource By Gide Wilder Much respected and for good reason. Speculation on this period is just that and could only be so. But Acheson's guesses inspired others.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Good scholarship By D.Damant A little careless sometimes -one glaring case of mistaken identity but on the whole convincing theories . Worthwhile read altogether

Paris’ second collection of poems, Grateful in Body, Family & Spirit, is a three-part collection chronicling her battle with illness, the support and love of friends and family, and her reliance and growth in Faith. Paris was diagnosed with a debilitating chronic illness, scleroderma, at age 14. Her poignant poems regarding her illness ring with truth and strength. In some ways, it has shaped her life and those around her. A grateful support system: grateful for life, grateful for love, grateful for one another. And, the only way to truly get through all tragedies in life, be it health, heartbreak, or death, Paris writes boldly about her growth and faith in her relationship with God. Though this is Paris’ journey and observations, readers will find themselves in these glimpses of human frailty and strength.

She had delayed, because of the dew-wet grass, in order to put on her overshoes, and when she emerged from the house found her waiting husband absorbed in the wonder of a bursting almond-bud. She sent a questing glance across the tall grass and in and out among the orchard trees. "Where's Wolf?" she asked. "He was here a moment ago." Walt Irvine drew himself away with a jerk from the metaphysics and poetry of the organic miracle of blossom, and surveyed the landscape. "He was running a rabbit the last I saw of him." "Wolf! Wolf! Here, Wolf!" she called, as they left the clearing and took the trail that led down through the waxen-belled manzanita jungle to the county road. Irvine thrust between his lips the little finger of each hand and lent to her efforts a shrill whistling. She covered her ears hastily and made a wry grimace. "My! for a poet, delicately attuned and all the rest of it, you can make unlovely noises. My eardrums are pierced. You outwhistle——" "Orpheus." "I was about to say a street-arab," she concluded severely. "Poesy does not prevent one from being practical—at least it doesn't prevent me. Mine is no futility of genius that can't sell gems to the magazines." He assumed a mock extravagance, and went on: "I am no attic singer, no ballroom warbler. And why? Because I am practical. Mine is no squalor of song that cannot transmute itself, with proper exchange value, into a flower-crowned cottage, a sweet mountain-meadow, a grove of redwoods, an orchard of thirty-seven trees, one long row of blackberries and two short rows of strawberries, to say nothing of a quarter of a mile of gurgling brook." "Oh, that all your song-transmutations were as successful!" she laughed. "Name one that wasn't." "Those two beautiful sonnets that you transmuted into the cow that was accounted the worst milker in the township." "She was beautiful——" he began. "But she didn't give milk," Madge interrupted. "But she was beautiful, now, wasn't she?" he insisted.

When all seems lost, when all the world has crumbled away, what will rise in its place? Corporate America has fallen, taking the rest of the world down with it, genetic engineering and bioterrorism having come together to wipe out nearly the entire human race. The few survivors have no choice but to rise from society's ashes, but with resources growing scarce and some unable to let go of the past, the future of the human race skates on a razor's edge of uncertainty. In this highly anticipated conclusion to the World-Mart trilogy, George travels beyond the districts, to the deviant shanty-towns and beyond, to a place he'd nearly forgotten--and to another he never could have imagined existed. And what he finds along the way will change everything he'd thought about the world--and the end of the world--as he knows it.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. A worthy follow-up to World Mart By Nick Stevens I read World Mart a couple of years ago and always hoped for a follow-up and Leigh Lane has delivered a fantastic one. World Mart ended on a fitting note for a dystopian novel (spoiler alert: nothing good!), but left it to the reader to infer what ultimately happens to George and what’s left of his family. Aftermath satisfying ties up the loose ends and takes the story to new places. As if it could not get any worse, the highly stratified, post-apocalyptic, corporate-controlled world of World Mart has ended. The population has been almost completely wiped out, except for a few corps and deviants. Will they put aside their prejudices and (often rightful) hate and bind together to survive? I will not give anything away, but let’s just say, the more things change, the more they stay the same. A really great and fast-paced read.

Excerpt from Fyodor Dostoyevsky: A StudyRussia was preparing to celebrate the centenary of the birth of Fyodor Dostoyevsky on October 30, 1921. Our writers and poets hoped to do honour in prose and verse to the great Russian novelist; the Slav peoples had arranged to send deputations to Petrograd, to pay their homage in Czech, Serbian and Bulgarian to the great Slavophil, who was ever faithful to the idea of our future Slav confederation. The Dostoyevsky family, in its turn, proposed to mark the occasion by publishing the documents preserved in the Historical Museum of Moscow. My mother was to have given the world her memories of her illustrious husband, and I was to have written a new biography of my father, and to have recorded my childish impressions of him.It is unlikely that any such festival will take place. A terrible storm has passed over Russia, destroying the whole fabric of our European civilisation. The Revolution, long ago predicted by Dostoyevsky, burst upon us after a disastrous war. The gulf which for two centuries had been widening between our peasants and our intellectuals, became an abyss. Our intellectuals, intoxicated by European Utopias, were advancing towards the West, while our people, faithful to the tradition of their ancestors, had set their faces to the East. The Russian Nihilists and Anarchists desired to introduce European atheism into our country, whereas our deeply religious peasantry remained faithful to Christ. The result of this conflict is now before us.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Fyodor Dostoyevsky: A Study (Classic Reprint), by Aimée Dostoyevsky

From the Author “In reading biographies of my father, I have always been surprised to find that his biographers have studied him solely as a Russian, and sometimes even as the most Russian of Russians. Now Dostoevsky was Russian only on his mother’s side, for his paternal ancestors were of Lithuanian origin. Of all lands in the Russian Empire, Lithuania is certainly the most interesting by reason of its transformations and the various influences it has undergone in the course of centuries.”

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Dostoyevsky Unclothed By Avid One This is a biography of the famous Russian novelist Fyodor Dostoyevsky written by his daughter Aimee. The preface indicates the biography was originally supposed to be part of a large Russian centenary celebration of Fyodor's birth on October 30, 1921. However, the Communist Revolution, which Aimee calls the "terrible storm" passing over Russia, interrupted those plans. Aimee then published the book in Europe hoping to suggest fresh critical studies of Fyodor's works in the process. The biography is not exhaustive and obviously it is totally sympathetic but it is not at all disappointing. Aimee does provide fresh, intimate details about the background, experiences, thoughts, ambitions, political views and relationships that helped shape and launch Fyodor. She also provides surprising critical and equitable analysis of events, relationships and the political turmoil in Russia and Europe during the period of Fyodor's life. In some respects, this may be a more critical analysis of Fyodor than you're likely to find anywhere else.Throughout the book, Aimee provides erudite observations about the connections between world events and Fyodor's stories. She may, for example, describe the Lithuanian mindset or compare and contrast the Russian moujik's peasant outlook with that of Russian nobility or aristocracy and then link it back to some character in a Fyodor novel or some influence on him that appears in a narrative. For instance, she briefly refers to the notorious and sensational murder of a Petrovosky Academy professor by some revolutionaries, known at the time as the Netchaieff Case. She says the incident made a deep impression on Fyodor and provided the subject for his famous novel, The Possessed. In another place, Aimee says that Fyodor liked to read the monologue of Marmeladov in Crime and Punishment to his salon students. She says that "all the religious philosophy of our childlike people is contained in this chapter of Crime and Punishment". Even while truthfully admitting Fyodor had a serious gambling problem, Aimee acknowledges Fyodor had always been deeply religious from his Siberian exile to the end of his days. She says no writer of his time had such a Christian culture as Dostoyevsky. "All his works were saturated with it and it is this which gives them their power".Such gems throughout this biography, in addition to its first hand accounts, chronologies and cultural artifacts should be indispensable to understanding Fyodor and his writings.
