Railroad Ties; Broken Hearts and Mended Lives is the embellished true life story of a brother and sister growing up in America sandwiched between the Greatest Generation and the Baby Boomers. The narrative opens in San Francisco shortly after the bombing of Pearl Harbor. We join Luana and Jimmy as they embark, hand in hand, guided by destiny and challenged by fate, on their shared journey through this life, where situations take them and the times demand they go. The author, Luana Lundquist-Rowland is a Jungian trained and California licensed marriage and family therapist. Her medium is Sandplay Therapy. Her specialty is children. In her thirty years of practice she has written hundreds of case histories. Now at long last she crafts her brothers and her own. As Luana sits at her desk across from an ebony framed photograph of her brother and herself as adorable children she takes pen in hand and begins writing Jimmy’s obituary. What starts as a reverie of their often bewildering early life experiences, becomes a tender tale of strength and weakness, betrayal and forgiveness, broken hearts and mended lives. What emerges is Luana’s growing understanding for and then acceptance of Jimmy’s untimely death as a result of his life-long addiction to alcohol, as an inevitability. The narrative begins as the young children are escorted to the Southern Pacific Train Station in Oakland, California. They are upon arrival deposited in the capable hands of kind eyed porters. This sixteen hour journey sets the stage for the bond of love that binds these two for a lifetime.

By Thomas B Pryor If one accepts Railroad Ties for what it is – a candid, detailed diaryesque memoir (the author began her diary at the age of ten) of a bright, interesting child growing up in a struggling, middle-class home full of children (only one of whom was a sibling) in northern California and Oregon during the 1940’s and early 1950’s – the story evokes a most enjoyable resonance. My wife (a retired college professor) and I (a retired lawyer) - both of whom were born in 1933, a few years earlier than the author - had never heard of Ms. Lundquist-Rowland or her book. Nor would we have, had not my son (who has a law degree) and his wife (a psychotherapist) who live in California given an autographed copy to my wife for her 83rd birthday on January 1, 2016. Within three days my wife, who had just finished the book, handed it to me and commented that I “needed to read this.” I did so; and it was a most pleasant experience. The book provides an unpretentious, detailed description of mid-century, middle-class family tensions, conflicts, living habits, cuisine, grade-school through high-school challenges and angst told from the perspective of a bright, interesting, energetic, thoroughly life-engaged child with which two contemporaries (my wife and I) living through much of the same experiences during roughly the same period of time some 2,000 miles away could resonate.Whatever this book may mean to others, it had for us a delightful resonance with a bygone era in our early lives. The book is descriptive rather than analytical; notwithstanding that the author is a licensed psychotherapist the book is a child’s memoir – indeed, it reads like a child’s memoir - and it does not pretend to be otherwise. It candidly, intimately and believably portrays the angst associated with childhood and maturation into young adulthood in a bygone era. For this purpose – evoking the nostalgia of childhood and maturation into young adulthood in middle-class America during the 1940’s and 1950’s – it is an enjoyable read.Thomas B. Pryor

This author writes in such a way that the children's suffering enters between the lines, leaving the reader emotionally impacted without fully understanding why. When the archetypal Wise Old Woman makes her early appearance, the reader senses her important role but only gradually comes to realize that she holds the story as well as the essentially mother-less children. Luana Rowland, herself a psychotherapist, has written a must-read for those concerned with children and their development.

We are all connected to our place in history. This story captures the sites, sounds and colors of the post Depression era into the 1950's through the life and struggles of one very real family. This gentle, loving remembrance has helped me reconnect with my own history.
