Cancer took Jeff Merrifield’s life, but the cruel disease never defeated him. Through three cancer diagnoses and excruciating treatments, Jeff maintained his determination and indomitable spirit, amazing those around him with his tremendous positivity.
Holding on While Letting Go is Jeff’s legacy, an inspirational memoir of his struggle told in his own words. Jeff proves that while nobody wants to receive a cancer diagnosis, it’s possible to be happy while dealing with the disease. He combines a sharp, often sarcastic sense of humor with brutally honest descriptions of his feelings, including his love for his family. Through his words, the son, brother, friend, and mentor he was shines through.
In the second part of the book, Jeff’s mother Sharon takes up the narrative, offering candid descriptions of the strain of care giving, the pain of hope turned to grief, and grief transformed to hope.
A cathartic labor of love, Holding on While Letting Go fulfills a promise made by a mother to her son: a promise to share his warmth, passion, and strength with the world. Ultimately, Jeff and Sharon’s story is one of triumph and the refusal to let a terrible disease overcome the joy of living.

Jeff touched the lives of many people and his legacy lives on in many ways.
Sharon Crislip, Jeff’s mother, is retired from Prince William County schools, and now has her own business under the logo of Coastal Creations. By Nittany10 Disclaimer: I was a long-time friend of Jeff Merrifield, one of the authors. This two-author memoir tells the story of Jeff, a beloved son, brother & uncle, a valued member of the middle school where he worked, and a good neighbor and friend who selflessly helped others in times of need. In 2009, when Jeff was diagnosed with cancer for the third time, he refused to become its victim and decided to author a book about his ordeal. The first part of the book is written by Jeff, who prevails against the deadly disease through his shrewd focus on the absurdities of modern medical protocols. Jeff's keen observation skills and witty barbs enable him, and his close-knit family, to bravely confront the cancer. In between delivering sarcastic quips about the inhumanity of hospital practices like puke-colored walls and butt-baring gowns, Jeff also gives practical advice to other cancer patients on coping with said atrocities. Although the cancer does eventually take his life, Jeff emerges as a survivor who refuses to stop living even in the face of horrific physical pain. The second part of the book is written by Jeff's mother, Sharon Crislip, who details the tragic loss of her only son. Her candid description of the challenges of trying to remain positive while wrestling with her own sadness and anger is heart-wrenching.And yet, Sharon soldiers on. In the five years since Jeff passed, Sharon has developed and incorporated an array of spiritual habits and activities that allow her to keep Jeff with her as she fully experiences the joys of living. Through a series of fascinating anecdotes, Sharon details the ways in which her desire to heal allows her to feel the presence of her son and propels her to forge new connections with people everywhere. In describing her own journey, Sharon also takes time to speak directly to the reader, giving specific, practical advice to those who are grieving. This is an incredibly sad book, but it is also funny and it's hopeful. Jeff and Sharon's story carries a positive message about the power of human connection and the ways in which the bonds between human beings fortify and strengthen the human spirit.

By Rita Wolfe A beautiful story of a Son who fought cancer 3 times with much courage and a sense of humor throughout that got him through the tough times. Wanting to share his story by starting this book, he sadly lost his third battle with cancer and his loving Mother Sharon promised to finish the story he started. A very touching, moving story from both the Son's side and then the caregiver, his Mom, that will have you smiling, laughing and crying throughout. Above all, it gives hope and encouragement to others who are fighting this terrible disease and encourages you to never, ever give up, but keep on fighting the battle and not let the disease control your life.

By Michelle Field This mother and son have unselfishly co-authored an intimate portrait of the human spirit prevailing in the darkest of days. A must read for anyone who has suffered great loss and is searching for a way back to a new normal.
