Excerpt from Autobiography of Andrew T. StillI will inform the reader at the outset that this book is written to state facts, without being confined to exact dates and figures. Events that have made lasting impressions on my mind, stated as correctly as possible from memory, are narrated here without regard to the rules of fine writing. I never kept any notes of my life, therefore the stories may appear disconnected. When I tell you of an event it will be the truth as I remember it, regardless of how it may look in print. I want to avoid "biography" as I write, for the reason that "biographies" are so nicely worded that the reader often has to ask whom the narrator "is giving a write-up." Notwithstanding I am often told that I ought to get a professional "biographer" to write my life, I have concluded to write it myself. When I read about the battles of the Rebellion, "How Major A. T. Still charged on rebels with uplifted saber, urging his men to victory," I begin to doubt professional biographers, for I know there was not a saber drawn nor was there any yelling during a hard fight of two hours' duration between thirty thousand combatants on each side.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. 3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. a wonderful visit with still By Sylvia Hawley Of course, I am so grateful to the existence of osteopathy and all works of the old doctor plus the great findings of his student, william sutherland. Even so I did not expect the autobiography to be such a glorious window on the frontier boyhood, the issues in border states in the middle 1850s and the personal tale of the doctor and his discoveries, trust in a benevolent creator and endeavors to bring his findings to othersThis is a touching story and inspiring, and most especially the first 170 pages. Then the story merges with sometimes wildly metaphoric flights of illustrating the natural laws of good health. These too are mixed with more immediate and grounded expressions of the genesis, practice and proofs of an approach that refuses pharmaceutical interventions. For me, the charm of the personal story is the great value here especially as that of a pioneering healer. Most excellent. Also I recommend The Cranial Bowl by Sutherland and the biography by his wife, With Thinking Fingers. Her story is a great treasure, detailing how Sutherland created cranial distortions on himself to learn to treat them. Exceptional work all around.
