About the Author
Pamela Browne Miles was born and raised in the Midwest, married young while in college, obtained a teaching degree in art and social studies, and spent the next number of years raising four wonderful children. She has had an exciting life filled with a variety of adventures. She has worked in education and politics, and has traveled widely.
She is a devoted Christian who loves her Lord and has participated in numerous short-term mission trips all over the world. These trips prepared her for sharing the Gospel in a very remote location. Living in Africa for a year was one of the highlights of her life. She now resides in South Carolina where she is close to two of her adult children and their families. She continues to serve the Lord in outreach ministries of her local church. Her husband of over fifty-five years, Corbin, suffers from Alzheimer's Disease and resides in a nearby nursing home.

Miles Having just retired at 55 years of age, my Parents decided it was time to do something really meaningful with their lives. The kind of thing that 30 years of working for "The Man" makes you want to do. So, they volunteered to go anywhere in the world that they were needed. Now, like most of us, they had to have secretly thought, "anywhere, of course, except Africa." But, that wasn't their choice and very soon they were on their way to Tanzania, Africa to work in a hospital and teach children.This book recounts their tales, on a week-by-week basis, of the year they spent getting there, living there, working with the native people and others from all over the world, and falling in love with Africa. The book intertwines weekly emails they sent back with connecting narratives, creating a page-turning adventure that introduces us to who they are, who they came to know and love there in Africa, and why you may want to volunteer for such a life changing adventure sometime in your life. You won't want to miss this story -- it's a great read.

By Amazon Customer An interesting account done in email plus commentary format. However, this tends to lead to some unnecessary repetition. The account however is personal and gives a clear picture of the adaptation needed to move from a first to third world life and how through this faith and fellowship are essential. It makes one realise the need for prayer and correspondence for those on the mission field.

The format of weekly emails home, from a Christian with a good sense of humor, gives a great armchair view of their experiences. Their coping with 3rd world day-to-day life with Christ-like charity, is an eye-opening reminder of a Christian's life.
