It's a typical Ayris story, beginning with an almost forty year old man taking a holiday in Marrakech and rescuing a macaque monkey. As with many of his stories it takes the form of a journey and our hero meets a number of characters on his way. Stuart's books often seem to me to be like mythology for modern times. They are stories which you couldn't imagine occurring in real life but which are there to entertain you and to teach you something.I always enjoy the author's playful word-building. Not satisfied for his purposes with the existing dictionary, he creates compound words of his own with which to paint the scenery. If you've read his work before you'll love this. If you haven't, it's not a bad place to start.

But I think really this time, it is my favourite. There is something so...impossible to explain about Merzougaville, Baby, and, in fact, when I met Stuart Ayris at an author event last year and asked him, "What's the novel about?" his answer was, "It's Merzougaville, baby."Stu writes with a kind of comforting mania. He's a beat writer out of time; he doesn't tell a story, he pours it. It's like wine that could be cheap, could be the dusty vintage from the back of some posh cellar, but when you're halfway down the glass, grimacing and laughing and crying with your mates, no matter the vintage. It's all just wine.It’s all just words anyhow. It is what it is.Words, rhythms, Stu-logisms...I'm a fan, I cannot lie.Down below to my left there were valleys of orange and green, blue streams flecked with splashwhite and burble, shacks and specks and rocklined fields, dotpeople and flowers, all breathing and alive in this gaping glory between our mountain and all the others; all just a painting on the ground and no more, dropped from the high of the sky and unfurled into the world at the feet of these snow-topped cragwonder giants.It's Merzougaville,baby.

Pertinent and provocative By Book Lover Henry Ward Beecher (June 24, 1813 - March 8, 1887) was a theologically liberal American Congregationalist clergyman and reformer.One of his elder sisters was Harriet Beecher Stowe, author of Uncle Tom's Cabin.An advocate of women's suffrage and for temperance, and a foe of slavery, he held that Christianity should adapt itself to the changing culture of the times. He raised funds to buy weapons for those willing to oppose slavery in Kansas and Nebraska, and the rifles bought with this money became known as "Beecher's Bibles". Politically active, he supported first the Free Soil Party and later the Republican Party. During the American Civil War, his church raised and equipped a volunteer regiment.His writings are full of passion and conviction and mark a great contribution towards today's movement in ecumenical thought.

Amazon.com Review In an article published the day before his death, G.K. Chesterton called The Man Who Was Thursday "a very melodramatic sort of moonshine." Set in a phantasmagoric London where policemen are poets and anarchists camouflage themselves as, well, anarchists, his 1907 novel offers up one highly colored enigma after another. If that weren't enough, the author also throws in an elephant chase and a hot-air-balloon pursuit in which the pursuers suffer from "the persistent refusal of the balloon to follow the roads, and the still more persistent refusal of the cabmen to follow the balloon."

But Chesterton is also concerned with more serious questions of honor and truth (and less serious ones, perhaps, of duels and dualism). Our hero is Gabriel Syme, a policeman who cannot reveal that his fellow poet Lucian Gregory is an anarchist. In Chesterton's agile, antic hands, Syme is the virtual embodiment of paradox: He came of a family of cranks, in which all the oldest people had all the newest notions. One of his uncles always walked about without a hat, and another had made an unsuccessful attempt to walk about with a hat and nothing else. His father cultivated art and self-realization; his mother went in for simplicity and hygiene. Hence the child, during his tenderer years, was wholly unacquainted with any drink between the extremes of absinthe and cocoa, of both of which he had a healthy dislike.... Being surrounded with every conceivable kind of revolt from infancy, Gabriel had to revolt into something, so he revolted into the only thing left--sanity. Elected undercover into the Central European Council of anarchists, Syme must avoid discovery and save the world from any bombings in the offing. As Thursday (each anarchist takes the name of a weekday--the only quotidian thing about this fantasia) does his best to undo his new colleagues, the masks multiply. The question then becomes: Do they reveal or conceal? And who, not to mention what, can be believed? As The Man Who Was Thursday proceeds, it becomes a hilarious numbers game with a more serious undertone--what happens if most members of the council actually turn out to be on the side of right? Who and what are the true identities of the other days of the week? Chesterton unwinds the mysterious entanglements in his own inventive and lively way and then escalates the mounting nightmare of paradox and surprise, culminating in a shocking revelation. Kind of weird but worth it By Gary Bisaga I have just finished this book and have to say, I concur with Kingsley Amis (writer of the introduction) who said that it was the "most thrilling book he has ever read." Chesterton weaves together a combination detective story, wierd dream ("Nightmare" as he says on his cover page), and social commentary. It's certainly not an apologetic book (as C.S. Lewis said, one can't always be defending the faith, sometimes one has to encourage those already converted), but elements of Christianity do come through (especially Chesterton's sensible view that your faith should affect every area of your life and outlook to the world).The hero, Symes (who is called Thursday) is a detective and a Christian who provokes an anarchist and infiltrates a world-wide underground anarchist society. From there, I won't spoil the story but there are many adventures, twists, and turns. This part I thought very well written. Every new discovery Symes makes literally had me on the edge of my seat. Things become more and more bizarre (right in line with Chesterton's own description of his book as a "Nightmare") until a very bizarre ending that I confess I have still not fully absorbed.There is a great deal of symbolism and allegory in the book, which is not clear until at least a third of the way through the book. In this way, the book is similar to C.S. Lewis's book "That Hideous Strength" (the third book in his space trilogy that includes "Perelandra"). Like Lewis's book, "Thursday" starts off very realistic (although with some hints of the bizarre twists to come) and gets more and more strange as the book goes on.Two things that will be helpful to understanding much of the symbolism:(1) Read the afterword at the end of the book by Chesterton. Unlike Amis's introduction, I wouldn't read it before you start reading the book. I'd recommend reading it after about a third of the book, perhaps right around the time the Pole is "unmasked" (that is, around chapter 6).(2) Also helpful is Martin Gardner's commentary on the book. There is another edition of the book that has Gardner's comments, but the most important parts of his commentary are available on the Internet (just search ye shall find them). This lays out the symbolism in more detail than the former, so if you want to figure it out for yourself don't read this until the end of the book.Finally, after you read through the book once, think about it and read comments such as Gardner's, then go back and read it again. As Amis says in his introduction, you can read this book many times and get new things out of it every time.

Chesterton's classic novella tackles anarchy, social order, God, peace, war, religion, human nature, and a few dozen other weight concepts. And somehow he manages to mash it all together into a delightful satire, full of tongue-in-cheek commentary that is still relevant today.As the book opens, Gabriel Symes is debating with a soapbox anarchist. The two men impress each other enough that the anarchist introduces Symes to a seven-man council of anarchists, all named after days of the week. In short order, they elect Symes their newest member -- Thursday.But they don't know that he's also been recruited by an anti-anarchy organization. And soon Symes finds out that he's not the only person on the council who is not what he seems. There are other spies and double-agents, working for the same cause. But who -- and what -- is the jovial, powerful Mr. Sunday, the head of the organization?Hot air balloons, elaborate disguises, duels and police chases -- Chesterton certainly knew how to keep this novel interesting. Though written almost a century ago, "The Man Who Was Thursday" still feels very fresh. That's partly because of Chesterton's cheery writing... and partly because it's such an intelligent book.He doesn't avoid some timeless topics that make some people squirm. Humanity (good and bad), anarchy, religion and its place in human nature, and creation versus destruction all get tackled here -- disguised as a comic police investigation. And unlike most satires, it isn't dated; the topics are reflections of humanity and religion, so they're as relevant now as they were in 1908.But the story isn't pedantic or boring; Chesterton keeps things lively by having his characters act like real people, rather than mouthpieces. From Symes to the Colonel to the mysterious Sunday himself, they all have a sort of friendly, energetic quality. "We're all spies! Come and have a drink!" one of the characters announces cheerfully near the end.And of course, once the madcap police investigations are finished, there's still a mystery. Who is Sunday? What are his goals? And for that matter, WHAT is Sunday -- genius, force of nature, villain or god? The answer is a bit of a surprise, and as a reflection of Chesterton's beliefs, it's a delicate, intelligent piece of work."The Man Who Was Thursday" is a wacky little satire that will both amuse and educate you. Not bad for a book often subtitled "A Nightmare."

39 of 41 people found the following review helpful. It's not a novel By Michael Reid This wonderful novel is not a detective story; not an allegory; especially not a work of theology. I haven't the audacity to attempt to define what it is. Chesterton did, however, and it's right there in the title: "A Nightmare". The story unfolds as a dream does, illogically and vividly. I approach it (and I have read it many times) as a prose poem, and a picture painted with words. Certainly it shows GKC's intensely visual imagination, and his ability to create a landscape in the mind. It is also an extended commentary on the Book of Job; in both, a mystery is answered with a greater mystery. Thus the enigmatic ending. GKC was a modern mystic, who saw creation as a pageant to be lived - and loved - rather than a propostion to be solved.

However, what struck me about this memoir is that there are really two stories occurring. One aspect of the narrative reflects the education and professional ascension of a brilliant doctor, but the parallel narrative is the story of a man’s life who happens to be a doctor. With unflinching self-awareness he shares his life story, often with incisive, self-deprecating humor, reflecting on the difficult childhood and inattentive parental presence that infused him with a robust competitive spirit and the drive to overcome all challenges to succeed. Brilliance, vulnerability, success and failure are shared with equal alacrity. He gives ample credit to his wife, and his family, for being the ballast that allowed him to pursue research and work with such unwavering focus; work that ultimately extended the life expectancy of cancer patients worldwide. His humanity, his faults, his self-awareness, his tenacity and his compassion resonate on each page, yielding an inspirational story of achievement that illustrates how one individual’s journey in life can impact thousands.

A Must Read for Cancer Patients and their Families By Valery Satterwhite This story of one doctor’s excruciating journey through his own experience with cancer and the quagmire of today’s medical system of patient care is gripping as it is gracious and generous in the insights and information shared. I recommend this book to anyone going through treatment or for any of their loved ones. Patients will learn how to direct more of the treatment they get. Loved ones will learn how they can contribute to the health and well-being of a loved one under a doctor’s care. It awakened me to the disconnect between todays medical training and the impact cancer has on the body and patient experience as a whole. Ample doses of active listening, honest and frequent communication and well-considered advice is as important as the technical aspects of the medical treatment process. When patient education and social network support are integrated into the culture of medicine Peter Kennedy’s legacy will be honored for its profound contribution to all in the battle of survival and recovery.

Not always "easy" reading, but pulls you into his world, his life, his profession and the life he has built with the challenging tools he was given. The heart of this physician is larger than the physical man himself and the world he brings to you and pulls you into along with your mind and heart is amazing.

This story is part history and part memoir. It concerns my father, a Presbyterian minister, and what he went through during the period 1957 to 1970, when he gave himself wholeheartedly to move his middle-class, Midwestern congregations into action on behalf of the oppressed. In the course of events, my father was arrested, with twelve other white ministers from the North, in 1964, in Pike County, Mississippi, while protesting the county’s refusal to register black voters. He spent one night in jail. The protest was in and out of the national news quickly, but it had a large impact on the town to which he returned, Athens, Ohio. He became the locus of controversy, a stand-in for the civil rights movement, and his church became the stage on which the struggle was played out in Athens. The story begins in Westerville, Ohio, in November 1957, with the performance of a minstrel show. It was a fundraiser performed by local citizens to benefit the varsity sports teams of the local college, Otterbein, and it was performed in Otterbein’s auditorium, just down the street from First Presbyterian Church, of which my father was pastor. He thought minstrel shows were self-evidently bad and that it was his duty to say so. He wrote a column in the local newspaper upbraiding the citizenry for supporting the minstrel show. He was not naive. And yet he was surprised by the reaction. Public opinion strongly favored it. Members of his church were scandalized not by the minstrel show but by his speaking against it. With the brouhaha that followed publication of his newspaper column, my father gained three things: a reputation as an advocate for civil rights, the understanding that his ministry would provoke conflict, and his own commitment to go ahead with his eyes open. He was eventually forced to leave the Westerville church. His next pastorate was at First Presbyterian Church of Athens, a small city with a large university some eighty miles southeast of Columbus. He arrived in January 1963 resolved to engage the congregation and himself in the civil rights movement as deeply as possible. This story tells the story of my father’s attempt to do this, and its consequences. I’ve been telling this story all my adult life—every month or two for the last forty-five years, I’d guess, usually a three-minute version. Besides being a kind of personal cornerstone story for me, I’ve always thought it had merit on its own as an exemplary story of the 1960s, the decade in which I passed my adolescence. Ever since then I’ve been promising myself that I would some day take the full measure of this story. This is it.

About the Author I was born in 1951, the height of the baby boom, and was raised in small Midwestern towns. I came of age in the 1960s in Athens, Ohio. I graduated with a degree in English from Brown University in 1974. I lived in New York, N.Y. from 1977 to 1985. I was employed by U.S. Department of Labor as a workers’ compensation claims examiner (the same job Franz Kafka had in Prague in the 1880s). During the same period, I volunteered at a neighborhood center for the Latin American community near Times Square. Friendships I made there, especially with Salvadorans and Guatemalans, radicalized me. In 1985, I moved to Nicaragua to work as a long-term volunteer with Witness for Peace. In 1986 and 1987, I worked with my future wife, Maria Arroyo, in a development project for war refugees in Nicaragua. We coordinated the construction of houses, schools, latrines, cooperatives, and water systems for a thousand families in ten refugee camps. In 1988 and 1989, Maria and I lived in the state of Chiapas in southern Mexico. I wrote a book about our two years in Nicaragua while Maria worked at a cultural center for indigenous peoples. Maria and I were married in March 1989, and in June of the same year, we were sent by the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) to work for ISER, a religious studies institute in Rio de Janeiro. Our son Daniel was born the next year in Rio. In 1991, we moved to the sertão, the semi-arid region of the northeast of Brazil, to work with CEDITER, a religious NGO that defends the rights of landless peasants. In March of 1994, we adopted our second son, Luiz. During our four years with CEDITER, we lived in the small rural town of Rui Barbosa, Bahia, and served as advisors to unions of rural workers, associations of small producers, and groups of landless families. I have told that story in another place. In early March, 1995, we returned to the United States for an indefinite period to have diagnostic studies done and treatment prescribed for our son, Daniel. When we found that Daniel had autism, we decided to stay in the United States. I worked on the staff of the national offices of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) from 1996 until 2010.

I was one of the 4 on the Session of 12 which voted to terminate him as our Pastor. A small group of us continued to nurture him. But he was an injured man who sought to tell the truth. Peter has lived a similar life in other cultures. He has the spirt of his father and mother who now rest in piece. I feel Tully blessed to have known this wonderful family. Jon K. Shallop, PhD

By Doug Yeager This is a compelling story that traces the effect of the Civil Rights movement on small town America, how it played out in a particular Church and how the pastor became the locus of controversy as a stand-in for the civil rights movement. This struggle was played out in Athens, and this book gives an honest assessment of the cost of this struggle to those involved. ,

A little lamb who's lost in a wood By Michael Hersh This is a very compelling book that provides an x-ray of how a sincere individual minister grappled with the conflict between serving the pastoral, social and political needs of a congregation while remaining true to his theological beliefs and loyalty to the fundamental doctrines of his church during the Civil Rights Movement. It presents a case study, based upon documents and interviews with those involved in the conflict, told in moving prose that gives us insight into what we mean by "organized" religion. If you believe that religious institutions and spiritual leaders have a role to play in social justice movements, this is a must read.

Perhaps the clearest tribute is that I've never been to Rome, raised children, nor tried to write a novel, yet still found this book to be wonderfully compelling. "Four Seasons in Rome" is alternatively hysterical and poignant, and always beautifully written. Doerr - an accomplished fiction writer - couldn't have made a smoother transition to a new genre. In fact, his nearly super human powers of perception are especially well-suited for describing and bringing to life the sounds, smells, feel, and wonder of everday Rome. A perfect reminder of the beauty of the seemingly mundane. And a perfect summer read for just about anyone.

I don't read much -- I have a really short attention span -- but anything about Rome usually catches my attention. I've been there a few times and have absolutely fallen in love with that city. Some travelogs about Rome are too highbrow for me, or a little too intellectual, so I'm always searching for non-fiction that conveys a real sense of the city. This book did it. It's very easy to read, and the author so perfectly nails the details about the city (and even gave me a few clues about new things to go and see that I haven't seen before!). The way he describes the nuances of each season makes me crave a return trip. It's a beautifully-written book, for anyone who loves Rome, or for anyone who's curious about visiting this most amazing city.

It is a relatively quick read, which is good for busy people - you won't be able to put it down.Anthony Doerr recognized a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, that happened to come along at a most inopportune time, and grabbed it. On the day his twin sons were born, Mr. Doerr received notification that he had received a grant to study or work at pretty much whatever he wanted for a year in Rome. Luckily his wife Shauna also must have recognized the necessity of grabbing this chance while it was available, and so they packed up their babies and traveled from Boise to Rome. Lucky for us, he decided to spend part of his time constructing this memoir.After reading Doerr's elegant, evocative prose, it's easy to see why the powers-that-be decided that his gift should be nurtured. He is just as awed by the adventure of raising his children as by the experience of living in Rome. Unlike other books in this very broad genre of expat memoir, Doerr does not focus on the quirks and foibles of the Italians. Rather, he describes his own little circle of family, friends and acquaintances and frequently lapses into long lyrical musings on historical events, nature, or whatever happens to strike his fancy. "The Biggest Funeral in the History of the World," aka the funeral of Pope John Paul II, is not treated as a gigantic pageant, despite the hyperbolic title. Through Doerr's eyes it is a profoundly moving and inclusive experience shared by millions.I loved this book. It is the kind of book you want to urge your friends and loved ones to read, to give as a gift. I look forward to reading much more from this gifted and warm writer.

About the Author George Bernard Shaw was an Irish playwright and a co-founder of the London School of Economics. Although his first profitable writing was music and literary criticism, in which capacity he wrote many highly articulate pieces of journalism, his main talent was for drama, and he wrote more than 60 plays. Nearly all his writings deal sternly with prevailing social problems, but have a vein of comedy to make their stark themes more palatable. Shaw examined education, marriage, religion, government, health care, and class privilege. He was most angered by what he perceived as the exploitation of the working class, and most of his writings censure that abuse. An ardent socialist, Shaw wrote many brochures and speeches for the Fabian Society. He became an accomplished orator in the furtherance of its causes, which included gaining equal rights for men and women, alleviating abuses of the working class, rescinding private ownership of productive land, and promoting healthy lifestyles... He is the only person to have been awarded both a Nobel Prize for Literature (1925) and an Oscar (1938), for his contributions to literature and for his work on the film Pygmalion (adaption of his play of the same name), respectively.

I was most impressed with the author's ability to successfully create a colorful (as in inflection-filled) and thus dynamic commentary. As to the somewhat transparent but, as highlited in the title, central topic, socialism, I feel this book has equally shown the positive and the negative consequences of its application all the while keeping true to its satire.

An Unsocial Socialist By A Customer Shaw's last, and in my opinion, best satire, An Unsocial Socialist is a wonderful book that is sadly not well known. The plot is pulls you in and the book spawned an equally great play, "Smash". I couldn't put it down until I finished it.

Brown I really enjoyed George Bernard Shaw's writing and I found this book was enlightening about socialism; both good and bad points. The characters are well developed and there are just enough twists and turns in the plot to keep it interesting. The descriptions of exporting jobs and importing goods in late nineteenth century England, and how it affects the rich and the poor, hits home for the USA today!

It is a clear, interesting, and enlightening view of the duties of an American Diplomatic Officer and the times he lived through. The crucial part that Belgium played in World War 1 and , of course, the action and attitudes of the Germans at that time are vividly portrayed. I found it one of the best diplomatic histories I have read.

About the Author Chris Dingman grew up in Lyme, New Hampshire, where he drew, roamed the surrounding woods, and first entertained the idea of God while listening to his mother’s Beatles records. He graduated summa cum laude with a degree in biology from Harvard University where he wrote for The Harvard Lampoon and also began writing poetry. After graduating, Chris has made a living variously as a comedy screenwriter, teacher, and private tutor in math, science and writing. He has released three CDs of original music as the singer-songwriter and guitar player for Crooked Roads. Inspired by Rumi, Billy Collins, William Carlos Williams, e.e. cummings, Antonio Machado, Federico Garcia Lorca, Kevin Dyer, Bob Dylan, Vincent Van Gogh, and others, this is his second book of poetry. Chris lives in Northern California. And Northern California lives in Chris.

About the Author Susana Moreira Marques is a writer and journalist. She was born in Oporto in 1976 and now lives in Lisbon, where she writes for Público and Jornal de Negócios. Between 2005 and 2010 Moreira Marques lived in London, working at the BBC World Service while also a correspondent for Portuguese newspaper Público. Her journalism has won several prizes, including the Prémio AMI—Jornalismo Contra a Indiferença and the 2012 UNESCO 'Human Rights and Integration' Journalism Award (Portugal). Now and at the Hour of our Death is her first book.Brazilian by birth, Julia Sanches has lived in the United States, Mexico, Switzerland, Scotland, and Catalonia. She obtained her undergraduate degree in Philosophy and English Literature from the University of Edinburgh and has a masters in Comparative Literature and Literary Translation from Universitat Pompeu Fabra. Her translations have appeared in Suelta, The Washington Review, Asymptote, Two Lines, and Revista Machado, amongst others. She currently lives in New York City.

It is filled with short stories, essays, poetry, and any other subject. The Tulsa NightWriters are a group of talented writers that have poured their hearts into this book. Some of the entries are by well-established authors, and others are by first-time writers. The layout of the book is perfect, and the subject matter is on target. I bought several copies to give as Christmas gifts. There is something in it for everyone.

Ranging from historical, western, and contemporary short stories to poetry and essays, there is something in this collection to fit your every mood. This is the perfect book to take along wherever you go, in order to squeeze in a quick poem about youth and summer or a flash fiction piece about faith and love. It's an absolute gem by one of the oldest writers clubs in Oklahoma, the Tulsa NightWriters Club. Over the past 65 years, this club has nurtured some of the finest authors in the country: Carla Stewart, Charles W. Sasser, Sara Sue Hoklotubbe, Dusty Richards, Mary Coley, Jackie King, and Radine Trees Nehring, to name only a few. The promising new writers you'll discover in these pages, some of whom have won multiple awards, may well be the literary giants of tomorrow. After reading the first short story in the book, "Sand Plum Summer" by Carla Stewart, I was hooked.

Her inner poetic world is amazing. Her poetic and literary universe carries the delicate fragrance of forgotten moments sparkling in a sunbeam, like particles of golden beauty embedded in the humbleness of our ordinary yet magnificent days.I was fortunate to read and hear (on CD) her splendid poetry and it touched me. In this collection of poems organised around three themes revolving around Light and its playful dances with shadows or the nightly darkness, the poet leads us gently to discover those moments we all experience but tend to be oblivious of soon after they've faded. It's like going for a stroll with a friend and chatting afterwards in the most gentle manner near a warming fire, recalling childhood memories. Beautiful poetry.
