1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. An exciting vision or a nightmare of a dystopian future By Theodore A. Rushton For those who thought the 'Master Race' idea was buried in 1945 Berlin, the 1997 dystopian film 'Gattaca' and recent genetic advances are reminders this idea is still very powerful. This brief but powerful 1912 book is Scott Nearing's blueprint for an American Super Race by favouring those with superior intelligence and preventing inferior people from breeding. Granted, most people agree parents should be able to "design" children free of crippling diseases. But what of assets such as blue eyes, blonde hair or naturally enhanced breasts? When Nearing wrote, methods to deter "inferior breeding" were cruder; but he argued the benefits of specific government 'Super Race' policies in America would far outweigh limits on the right to bear inferior children. Nearing argued for a master race; modern genetics may make it possible for those who can afford it. The issue is no longer if we can design superior children, but whether we want the richest 1 percent (or 10 percent) to gain such powers for their good and our evil. There are three billion units in our DNA - - the instruction book of human life. What happens if we get "just a few" wrong in any manipulation? People spent 5,000 years subject to the rules, whims and rages of self-appointed superior kings, nobles, presidents and priests. What did the best and brightest of the past do for society? for themselves? Will genetically enhanced rulers be better? The second question is whether government or anyone can prevent such genetic manipulation. In a perfect world with ideal plans, genetic planning may be good - - which is the basis of Nearing's argument. In reality, as Richard Feynman said, nobody has ever figured out the cause of government stupidity, and until they do and find the cure all ideal plans will fall into quicksand. Yet, people are almost certain to try. Nearing asserted the benefits of such manipulation; others question the cost of creating a master race. His book is more relevant now than when written.
