The writer of Exodus tells us that when Moses went up the mountain to meet with God, the people stayed below, and when Moses returned, his face shone so brightly that the people could not bear to look at him. The Gospels tell us that Jesus led his three disciples up the mountain where his face shone like the sun and when they heard the voice of God they fell to the ground overcome with fear. Most of us, like the Israelites in the wilderness and the disciples on the mountain, are not able to gaze directly at the sacred. The following offerings of words are not first accounts of face to face meetings with the holy but are rather glimpses out of the corner of the eye, whispers of the transcendent. To be brushed by the sacred is to feel the hint of wings and the rustling breeze in a stand of pines. I have come to suspect that the sacred is most mercifully revealed in the ordinary and offers us enough raw presence to startle the soul and race any heart. These various pieces rise out of the everyday and are intended to be as accessible as a child’s drawing or a lover’s kiss. Accept them in the spirit they are offered and discover perhaps that the sacred is closer than you imagined.

I cannot help but read 3 or 4 because they lift one up to the "third heaven" so to speak and give one new insights on how to better live each day on earth through the heart, mind and spirit of a spectacular poet and human being. I am going to tell all my friends that this is a must read and contemplate book. Thank you, Lee!

Gelston Reverend Lee Beckes' book is a collection of distinct writings printed in congregational newsletters spanning twenty-eight years. These writings give assent to Shelley's assertion that poetry strips the veil of familiarity from the world. (".. that Mystery would find a home here wooing us to a knowledge deeper than fact or formula.") Lee Beckes beckons us to join him at the banks of life's ever-flowing stream, to stand at the confluence of vitality and intentionality and gaze deeply into the fusion of power and meaning, "the breath of life" undergirding the depth of the "ordinary." (".. we who long to hear the reconciling phrase must find the necessary language.")In reading BRUSHED BY THE SACRED I am reminded of the words of one of the greatest Americans, Frederick Douglas, who said that "knowledge leaves a person unsuited for slavery." As previously stated in various ways, familiarity "obscures from us the wonder of our being." Lee Beckes would have us see through its illusions.James Gelston
