Through much of the 1980's & 1990's, Owen Levy got to know the divided city of Berlin inside out working as a film and music journalist. He was struck by the realization that a city so ravaged by tensions and division still boasted all of the underground cultures, scenes and venues usually associated with world capitols. He discovered a thriving gay scene: a growing, diversified group of men and women who defied Cold War tensions to put their own unique spin on life on both sides of the infamous Wall. Inspired by what he saw, Levy fused fact and fiction in this compelling new novel. ‘Goodbye Heiko, Goodbye Berlin’ is a moving if unconventional tale of unrequited gay love and transgender reinvention told against the backdrop of a rapidly reuniting nation. “Gay” and “Cold War” are rarely used in the same sentence. But, as Levy proves in gripping prose, they can co-exist. To his knowledge, this is the first novel originating in English to take readers inside the East Berlin cultural underground and particularly its gay scene. Gay lifestyles existed on both sides of the Wall, yet he couldn’t believe how vibrant and ‘normal’ Berlin gay life was even separated by the infamous symbol of division. The story's arc touches upon Germany's brief brush with East African colonization and its postwar legacy of humiliation and redemption. The book presents a unique way to discover a hidden history that is often unknown or simply swept under the rug. Fittingly enough legendary chronicler of gay Berlin between the Two World Wars Christopher Isherwood wrote in his preface to a 1954 reissue of “The Berlin Stories” that the politics of a Divided Germany was rich material for a younger writer as his own interests had moved elsewhere. As with his first novel "A Brother's Touch" set in post-Stonewall New York, Levy reveals secrets and rituals of Berlin's sexual cultural underground few outsiders experience.

From the Author NOTEFor those unfamiliar, Heiko is a traditional given name of Germanic origin and is the diminutive of Heinrich or Henry. Usage dates back to 13th Century Low German. During the years Germany was divided Heiko remained a popular boy's name in the East but far lesser so in the West. Acoustically the pronunciation (Hi-Koo) can be confused with Haiku, the short poetry form from Japan.

"The chance to hear you play-makes me feel part of something secret, forbidden--the East Berlin underground music scene. I mean like how cool is that! One day I'm going to do something really great. Make a name East and West!" His eruption into megalomania was surprising and seductive.The raw determination in his eyes incredibly sexy. Momentarily the Wall didn't exist. Clearly Heiko's drop dead looks and charisma would attract supporters to achieve whatever he wants. Only luck and timing mattered. Casually throwing both arms around me in spontaneous embrace caught me off-guard. This piece of dark chocolate started melting.

By Amazon Customer Goodbye Heiko, Goodbye Berlin is a great read for the LGTBQ community and anyone who wants a good book. I learned about Berlin during the Cold War and the Berlin Wall before and after the Fall. You get a sense of what the gay subculture was like on both sides of the Wall during that period. I've also learned more about the life of a transgender person and get a glimpse of the journey one goes through making a transition. Overall I enjoyed the book. I definitely would recommend this to be put on your must read list.

I especially enjoyed Levy's quirky writing style, which frequently omits determiners, pronouns and prepositions, which usually seem necessary, but here their absence creates a sense of light and open space for the narrative and its characters to move through. A bold, sensitive reminder of the importance of human connection. Sincerely recommended.

Fascinating place and time with interesting characters and an unexpected ending. As a straight man I easily related to the unrequited love story that is universal and has nothing to do with sexual orientation but everything to do with being human and caring for others. Highly recommended.
