About the Author Sidney Lanier (1842-1881) was born in Macon, Georgia. After serving in the Confederate Army during the Civil War, he held a variety of jobs and traveled widely throughout the northern and southern states. In addition to earning success as a poet, Lanier received praise as a professional flutist with the Peabody Symphony Orchestra in Baltimore before he died of tuberculosis in 1881.

23 of 26 people found the following review helpful. An 19th Century Materpiece! By William Slater III Sidney Lanier was perhaps the greatest poet produced by the South during the the 19th Century. His descriptions of the nature and the Georgian Marshes of Glen, as in "the slant yellow beam of the sun doth seem like a lane from Heaven that leads to a dream..." and "belief overmasters doubt and I know that I know..." are words that feed the soul with the timeless nector of wisdom and humanity. I treasure this book and any student of the American South and/or of American Poetry will find Mr. Lanier's style of alliteration and assonance, together with his wonderful imagery to be a feast for the soul in solitude.

One of the great Southern poets By Charles van Buren I was taught in more than one class in more than one school, that the three great Southern poets are, in order, Edgar Allan Poe, Sidney Lanier, and Henry Timrod. I have not read or heard anything in the past 50 years to change my opinion. In fact, one of my favorite books is Lanier's retelling of the King Arthur stories. Unlike my experience with Henry Timrod, I discovered Lanier on my own by simply browsing through the stacks in our high school library. Lanier's poetry is excellent. Well it is unless you consider Richard Brautigan to be great literature, in which case I think we speak different languages. I for one have never sampled illegal drugs or regularly over indulged in alcohol.

About the Author Shauna Singh Baldwin was born in Montreal and grew up in India. The Tiger Claw, her second novel, was a finalist for the Giller Prize in 2004 and is forthcoming as a film. Her short stories have won literary awards in the United States, Canada and India. 5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. Brilliant! Baldwin's best. By Elaine Bergstrom First off, a disclaimer. I know Baldwin well, and she read portions of this novel in our Milwaukee writer's workshop when she wasn't traveling back and forth to India to research this project. Even so, I found it difficult to put down once I started reading the finished project for the stories of the two women who are central to the novel and the insight the book offers on the many religions -- Hindu, Muslim, Sikh and Christian -- of India and how they coexist and clash. But most importantly the often tragic plight of women in this male-dominated society is central to the plot. If you love well researched novels that open not only your heart, but also your eyes, read this novel. Highly recommended!

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Interesting By readtoescape This is my first time reading a book by Ms. Baldwin, having found the book featured at a book store. I really enjoyed this book, however I found it to drag on in parts that I didn't feel were necessary to the overall story. It was very emotionally challenging, but also educational, as I learned about the treatment of women in India, in different castes. Certainly reading this book prompted me to look into the plight of women in India today, as well as reading about the dramatic differences there since the time period featured in the early part of the book.I previously read the book Shantaram, so this was similar to that book in that it is a very detailed book about India, but very different in that it is focused on two women drawn together from very different backgrounds.I found the characters to be very interesting, especially the way the author weaved several stories into one at points, before having the characters break apart into their separate stories again. In particular I quite liked the character Anu, who I found to be multifaceted and a sympathetic heroine of sorts.Overall this was a good read, but you do need to be in the mindset to get into the novel, particularly aspects dealing with abuse and death. I would certainly read more from this author.

When a group of high school bullies lock Ella Raimi inside of a janitorial closet on a Friday night and leave her there she isn’t found until Saturday morning. Ella is in a state of shock when found and as she comes out of it she insists she OK and doesn’t want to involve the police about her bullies.Ella only has one friend, Kyla. Kyla stays with Ella after her incident and tries to care for her but shortly after the closet incident Ella begins to have horrible nightmares and find she wakes up to finding things have happened and no memory of them. Is Kyla somehow to blame? Is Ella doing these things in her sleep??An excellent psychological thriller that pulls you in from the first moments of Ella being locked up in the closet and won’t let go until the end. I did however figure out the ending fairly early on but even with guessing I still didn’t want to put the story down until done.Ella pulled me into her story from the first few moments just knowing that she would have such an interesting story to tell and definitely was not disappointed in the least. A rather emotional roller coaster that even when finishing a part of me is still thinking noooo I want to read more about Ella and what will happen. Always find it good to have a story or characters that it’s hard to let them go when finished.Great fast paced read that was tough to put down until finished.I received an advance copy from the publisher via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

Unfortunately things are not going well when she is constantly bullied for being a charity case and being poor. Then the bullying turns bad when she is locked into a closet overnight and discovered by the janitor the next day. Although she tells everyone that she is fine, Ella is the furthest from that. She starts having nightmare and waking with scratches on herself. Her only friend Kyla is there for her but disappears in the morning. Then she wakes with blood covering her and when a student is found dead she is blamed.This is one amazing psychological thriller. I kind of had an idea of what may be happening but it didn’t really seem to fit. Besides the bullying, Ella has a great relationship with her mother and she can share with her the things that are going on. But the ending, it was great. I never expected it. With a couple good twists thrown in to keep me on my toes. I couldn’t put Dark Shadows down for long because I couldn’t wait to see what was going to happen next.This is a great thriller. I have not read any books by Toni Vallan but I will be sure to add her to my must read list. If you like a great psychological thriller you need to get this book.I received Dark Shadows for free from Mark My Words in exchange for an honest review.

Twists and Turns at every corner By Dee Ella Raimi is a very bright young lady who has received a scholarship to a very prestigious school for the elite, but despite this, she is constantly being bullied because of the fact that she is not as rich as the other kids who attend this school. Bullying takes a turn for the worse when she is locked in a janitorial closet overnight which seems to trigger nightmares and time lapses and things she cannot remember doing after she has gone to bed. As you read further into the story there are many details that seem to bring to light many reasons why this is happening, but even though you feel there is something big coming, you cannot quite pinpoint exactly what until the last page and then BAM what a twist!(no peeking!) I have to say that this is one of those books where I feel it would make a great movie, because you always feel something big coming and even though you think you know what that might be, you are quite surprised to find out what it actually is! Great job!!!!

In the case of Androcles and the Lion, the preface is Shaw's disquisition on Christianity -- he explains it and the Gospels, in his inimitable way -- for over a hundred pages. The preface to Androcles and the Lion is one of Shaw's masterpieces...and is MISSING from this edition. Could it possibly be that this is because those putting this travesty of Shaw's work out do not want Christian readers seeing Shaw's explanation?

By A Customer the story sets a scene of serenity, but later the plot thickens and complications trouble androcles and his lion friend, but old friends remain friends, and it is their friendship that saves them in the end.

Sanctity of forced conversions By Claude Lambert You can count on Shaw to depict conversion like this: there is a big fighter coming along and shaking you up until he converts you. Later on, we call the man a saint. It is outrageous, and funny. It is also mainly true: Europe was converted to christianity more by the will of kings and armies than by the internal musings of the population. Shaw has an explanation for miracles too. I do not think you need to read the preface to get the gist of what he says. Most of the prefaces of his plays are long, interesting and dated. There is no preface in this edition. Shaw makes his philosophical positions very clear in his work, for instance in the Preface of Mrs. Warren's Profession he says that he had "no respect for popular morality, no beief in popular religion, no admiration for popular heroics."But you do not have to share Shaw's views to enjoy the plays. Nowadays, you can like a cartoon from the NewYorker without betraying what you belive in, or enjoy any humorist you see on TV. We laugh because there is some truth behind what the humorist says. Usually, we don't change our political or religious views because of it.Enjoy the play. If you want to know more about what Shaw believed in, buy more books. Live a little. This is fun, you'll never forget Androcles and his wonderful lion.

116 of 118 people found the following review helpful. Excellent Kindle edition By Jeffrey Van Wagoner This is one of the most impressive free kindle editions of a book that I have read. It is taken from a 1902 printing (a 2nd edition) that was reprinted from the posthumous edition of 1777. It includes endnotes and an extensive index put together by L.A Selby-Bigge, a late fellow of University College, Oxford. There is a table of contents at the beginning with hyperlinks. The endnotes also have hyperlinks, which makes it easy to read the notes and jump back to the text. The index also has hyperlinks. This is the first kindle freebie that I have seen with these features. This is handy for this type of book. Note that Hume is Scottish and the book was originally written in English.I have always had an interest in philosophy and history and finally got around to reading this foundational work. The title describes exactly what this book is about. Hume starts by giving a brief introduction to philosophy and then jumps into the main questions. The biggie is where do ideas come from? How do we understand things? What is instinct, inspiration? It is interesting that his answers to these questions still hold up well to modern thought.Hume wrote this book at a time and place where Calvinism still held great sway and God was thought to be behind every thought and action. His ideas were radical and I was interested to see how he tried to delicately handle ideas that would potentially offend many of his readers.I highly recommend this seminal work to any one interested in philosophy and enjoys stretching their minds a bit. This is something I will refer to often. I continue to enjoy the access my Kindle gives me to great classics like this.

As Exciting and Thought-Provoking as Philosophy Gets By ctdreyer Hume, I and many others think, was the greatest philosopher to have written in English, and this is the book to pick up if you want to introduce yourself to Saint David's distinctive brand of classical empiricism. This is a must-read for anyone with even a passing interest in philosophy, and it's hard for me to see how anyone interested in the history of modern thought can avoid reading this book or the corresponding sections of Hume's Treatise.As is well-known, the Enquiry concerning Human Understanding was intended as an encapsulation and popularization of the views Hume defended in Book I of his magnum opus, A Treatise of Human Nature. Hume assumed that book's commercial failure could be accounted for by its length, difficulty, and lack of accessibility, and so, being a man who desired literary fame, he hoped to acquire commercial success by presenting the same ideas in a more appealing and accessible manner. Unfortunately, it seems Hume misunderstood what the literati of his day were looking for in a philosophical treatise. For the Enquiry, like the Treatise before it, didn't bring him the fame he sought. Still, Hume did understand what goes into writing excellent philosophical prose, and consequently this book is a much easier read than Book I of the Treatise. Indeed, this book constitutes an excellent introduction to Hume's thought, and, except for maybe Berkeley's Three Dialogues, I can't think of another primary source that would serve as a better introduction to classical British empiricism.Now, let's get to the ideas here. Hume, like the other classical empiricists, was primarily concerned with the psychological question of the origin of our concepts. About the answer to this question, the empiricists were all agreed--our concepts are furnished by experience, which includes both sensory experience and introspection (i.e., the experience of our own mental states). And the empiricists also agreed about the way we can justify our beliefs. Some beliefs are true (or false) in virtue of the ideas they contained, and we can know their truth (or falsity) simply by thinking about them; other beliefs are true (or false) in virtue of how the external world is, and we can know their truth (or falsity) only by drawing on our experiences of the world. According to Hume, all substantial conclusions about the world fall into this second category. That is, the truth (or falsity) of all substantial claims about the existence and nature of things in the external world can be discovered only by checking those claims against the evidence of our senses.The traditional way of placing Hume within the story of empiricism goes something like this. Hume takes up the empiricism of Locke and Berkeley and pushes it to its logical conclusion. Whereas Locke and Berkeley hadn't been wholly consistent empiricists, Hume, the true believer, demonstrates that classical empiricism leads to a pretty thoroughgoing skepticism. Since he's wholly convinced of the truth of his empiricist premises, Hume is willing to accept the skepticism that goes along with them. However, those who aren't convinced of that his empiricism is obviously correct think that Hume has actually demonstrated the implausibility of his empiricism. If this is where empiricism leads, they think, then it's clear that we need to reject empiricism. Indeed, some, like Thomas Reid, view Hume's arguments as constituting a reductio ad absurdum of his sort of empiricism. On this interpretation, Hume's philosophy essentially presents a dilemma for all future thinkers: abandon empiricism, or accept empiricism along with Humean skepticism.But a different view of Hume, one of Hume as proposing a wholly naturalistic account of the human mind, has recently emerged as a competitor to the general conception of Hume's place within philosophy sketched in the previous paragraph. This interpretation downplays Hume's skepticism and emphasizes his professed intentions to provide a positive account of the operation of the human mind that appealed to nothing beyond the evidence of our senses. According to proponents of this interpretation, Hume is most interested in a description of the operation of the human mind. He's describing what human nature allows us to know and what it doesn't allow us to know. Furthermore, he argues that our nature is such that, where it fails to provide us with the resources to acquire the knowledge we might want, it provides us with a natural habit of forming the right conclusions anyway. Even though our nature limits our knowledge of the world, it ensures that we possess the habits of mind needed to make our way in the world. Hume dubs all these habits of mind "custom."If this view is correct, then Hume has abjured many of the normative aims of traditional epistemological inquiry. He isn't attempting to show how we can answer a skeptic or why we have good reason to believe what we think we know. Instead, he wants us to stand back from our everyday beliefs and think about the natural processes that result in them. How, exactly, do our minds operate? How do we come to think what we do about the world? Hume thinks that this sort of inquiry will lead us see that, at some point, the explanation of why we think what we think reaches certain brute facts about the operation of the human mind. When we reach these points, there is nothing more to be said. We simply can't help thinking in these ways, and we lack the resources to demonstrate that these ways of thinking constitute an accurate way to represent the operation of the external world. And, Hume claims, it turns out that many of the fundamental elements of our conception of the world--the belief that things stand in causal relations to one another, the belief that we can know that there is a world outside our minds, the belief the future will resemble the past--end up not being open to ratification by experience. With respect to beliefs of these sorts, we ultimately have to appeal to custom in order to explain their existence and popularity. Hume, then, can be seen as demolishing the pretensions of reason in order to make room for a wholly naturalistic account of human thinking.

Designed to be used by both casual and serious students of philosophy, this edition contains the text of Hume's Enquiry Concerning Human Understanding (EHU) and a series of other sections that provide background and further directions for studying Hume. Included are an excellent precis of the EHU, a first rate annotated bibliography concerning works by and about Hume, considerable background material on Hume, and excellent notes to the text of the EHU.The EHU is a concise and charmingly written presentation of Hume's views of the nature and particularly the limitations of human knowledge. The EHU presents Humes basic concepts of human thought, human pattern recognition, and then proceeds to Hume's revolutionary analysis of the problem of induction. Hume exposes our limitations in establishing certain cause and effect relations. Hume's analysis of this problem and its corollaries leads to ultimate skepticism about our ability to know the external world with certainty and undermines much of the basis for religion. Hume presents his ideas in an attractive style that owes much to famous 18th century essayists like Addison.A fundamental work and very readable work.

For professional engineers and anyone who regularly deals with regulatory agencies, I highly recommend it. It should be required reading for anyone who serves on a regulatory board or commission or who works for a regulatory agency as an example of what can happen when things get out of hand and an agency loses sight of its primary mission.Being the memoirs of one individual, the book naturally gives only one side of the story. Even so, the situation the author describes must be pretty bad.

Through much of the 1980's & 1990's, Owen Levy got to know the divided city of Berlin inside out working as a film and music journalist. He was struck by the realization that a city so ravaged by tensions and division still boasted all of the underground cultures, scenes and venues usually associated with world capitols. To his knowledge, this is the first novel originating in English to take readers inside the East Berlin cultural underground and particularly its gay scene. Gay lifestyles existed on both sides of the Wall, yet he couldn’t believe how vibrant and ‘normal’ Berlin gay life was even separated by the infamous symbol of division. The story's arc touches upon Germany's brief brush with East African colonization and its postwar legacy of humiliation and redemption. From the Author NOTEFor those unfamiliar, Heiko is a traditional given name of  Germanic origin and is the diminutive of Heinrich or Henry.  Usage dates back to 13th Century Low German.  During the years Germany was divided Heiko remained a popular boy's name in the East but far lesser so in the West.  Acoustically the pronunciation (Hi-Koo) can be confused with Haiku, the short poetry form from Japan.

"What makes tonight really special for me?"  Heiko's grey-blue eyes brightened. "The chance to hear you play-makes me feel part of something secret, forbidden--the East Berlin underground music scene. I mean like how cool is that! Even better you're someone I feel a real connection. Can't wait to see what else you can do." Ignited with boyish enthusiasm he declared, "Yes I do many things!  One day I'm going to do something really great. Make a name East and West!" His eruption into megalomania was surprising and seductive.The raw determination in his eyes incredibly sexy. Momentarily the Wall didn't exist. Clearly Heiko's drop dead looks and charisma would attract supporters to achieve whatever he wants. Only luck and timing mattered. Casually throwing both arms around me in spontaneous embrace caught me off-guard. This piece of dark chocolate started melting.

By Amazon Customer Goodbye Heiko, Goodbye Berlin is a great read for the LGTBQ community and anyone who wants a good book. I learned about Berlin during the Cold War and the Berlin Wall before and after the Fall. You get a sense of what the gay subculture was like on both sides of the Wall during that period. I've also learned more about the life of a transgender person and get a glimpse of the journey one goes through making a transition. Overall I enjoyed the book. I definitely would recommend this to be put on your must read list.

I especially enjoyed Levy's quirky writing style, which frequently omits determiners, pronouns and prepositions, which usually seem necessary, but here their absence creates a sense of light and open space for the narrative and its characters to move through. A bold, sensitive reminder of the importance of human connection. Sincerely recommended.

Fascinating place and time with interesting characters and an unexpected ending. As a straight man I easily related to the unrequited love story that is universal and has nothing to do with sexual orientation but everything to do with being human and caring for others. Highly recommended.

ONE OF THE MOST INFLUENTIAL "CLASSICS" OF PHILOSOPHICAL APOLOGETICS By Steven H Propp William Paley (1743-1805) was an English Christian apologist, philosopher, and utilitarian. He also wrote The evidences of Christianity. This was his last book, first published in 1802.He begins with his famous "watchmaker" argument, in which he supposes that if he "pitched my foot against a stone, and were asked how the stone came to be there, I might possibly answer, that for any thing I knew... it had lain there for ever... But suppose I had found a watch upon the ground... I should hardly think of the answer which I had before given... Yet why should not this answer serve for the watch as well as for the stone...? For this reason... that when we come to inspect the watch, we perceive... that its several parts are framed and put together for a purpose... This mechanism being observed... the inference we think is inevitable, that the watch must have had a maker---that there must have existed... an artificer or artificers who formed it for the purpose which we find it actually to answer, who comprehended its construction and designed its use." (Pg. 9-10)He then points out that "Nor is any thing gained by running the difficulty farther back... by supposing the watch before us to have been produced from another watch... and so on indefinitely... Contrivance is still unaccounted for. We still want a contriver." (Pg. 16) He poses the objection, "Why resort to contrivance when power is omnipotent?" He says, "one answer is this: It is only by the display of contrivance that the existence, the agency, the wisdom of the Deity COULD be testified to his rational creatures." (Pg. 34)Later, he deals with counter-argument (that would become stronger with the 1859 publication of Darwin's 'Origin of Species') that such contrivance might have been produced by chance: "Universal experience is against it. What does chance ever do for us? In the human body... chance... may produce a wen, a wart, a mole, a pimple, but never an eye. Among inanimate substances, a clod, a pebble, a liquid drop might be; but never was a watch, a telescope, an organized body of any kind... the effect of chance." (Pg. 49)He further argues for the "goodness of the deity" based on the fact that "the Deity has superadded pleasure to animal sensations beyond what was necessary for any other purpose, or when the purpose... might have been effected by the operation of pain." (Pg. 295) His ultimate conclusion is, "The marks of design are too strong to be gotten over. Design must have had a designer. That designer must have been a person. That person is God." (Pg. 285)Paley's book is essential reading (even if one is only reading it with a desire to refute it) for all philosophers, theologians, and scientists.

A valuable source By mike Though written in the late 1800's, this book provides many insights into the current clash between science and religion, including intelligent design. I won't go further with my personal views, only say that this book helps clarify many aspects of the issue.

0 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Evolution Inserted Sideways By William H. Stokes Natural Theology is a product of the age. It protests too much. A very detailed exposition of animal characteristics and environmental adaptations is given and when read with 21st century eyes reads like an argument for Evolution with God attached to protect the book from the censors and the author from disrepute. I have the same opinion about Descartes who had to adopt a religious veneer as protection from the times he lived in. It is certainly a compelling read however you approach this classic work!

Megan Chaskey, the author, is an award-winning poet as well as musician, healer, teacher, and Naam yoga practitioner—and these are only some of her creative and spiritual ventures. Born into an educated and artistic family, it’s clear that this environment nourished her own creativity. But it’s also clear that that creativity stems from a much older spiritual journey that has its origins and deeper purpose beyond this world.On the surface, Birdsong Under the Wisdom Tree is a combination of memoir and poetry that takes us through the author’s growth and development as a poet and person, from her girlhood to various roles and adventures as a young and, later, mature woman. In this way, it will speak to many age groups and especially to artists. But the experience of the book is more than its surface content. Rather, it’s like the song of a poet’s soul witnessing and experiencing life in its many facets while never losing her wonder and innocence.This is not a book to rush through. Take your time. From the Author The confluence of the Yellowstone and Missouri Rivers is a region of the USA steeped in histories of the mountain man, fur traders and the northern upper plains nomadic tribes. I joined a veterinary practice there in 1960. Our clients were determined, independent-minded folks who expected their veterinarian to be physically tough, knowledgeable about all species of animals, and skilled in the practice of the profession. Our animal patients were usually stoic but never embarrassed by anything they did or done to them. The characters in this book are those people, those animals, and that time and place.

About the Author After private veterinary practice for ten years, David R. Gross, DVM, PhD taught and did research at Texas A & M University for sixteen years, was director of the Cardiovascular and Thoracic Surgery Research Labs at the University of Kentucky for five years. He retired in 2006 after twelve years as professor and head of Veterinary Biosciences, University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign. Now living in Seattle, he writes and is active in social action causes.

I read it it one sitting and could not put it down until I finished. The Author seems like a kind and witty man and he make you feel like you right there with him as he makes his Vet rounds and meets the people of Sidney, MT and environs circa 1960.I highly recommend this book for all types of readers, not just animal lovers.

Gross is incredibly knowledgeable in his field as evidenced by the wealth of his professional publications. Now he casts his pen to a memoir reminiscent of James Herriot, but on American soil.Fresh out of veterinary school, a young doctor cares for animals in the Yellowstone Park area in the 1960s. The memoir is a leisurely-paced book from a kinder time in our history, chock full of fascinating animals, people and memories. The author easily draws you into his world in this captivating story. Animals Don't Blush chronicles the experiences of a well trained veterinarian with high integrity and a good marriage to a great cook. Dr. Gross cared as much about the homesteader owners as the animals he treated. The book's special quality is its emphasis on the bond between animals and the people they love. Explanations of the technical details of the medical treatment of animals take the memoir to a higher level. Gross’s book, Animals Don’t Blush, takes us through a year in the life of a new vet. Right out of veterinary college and newly married, Gross accepts a position as associate veterinarian in remote Sidney, Montana. Dr. Marcus Schultz’s small veterinarian practice was growing. After an initial interview, Gross spent the day assisting Dr. Schultz’s in taking blood samples from thirty-five cows and an angry, uncooperative two thousand pound bull. The day ended with a verbal analysis of the day’s event, a salary negotiation, and a handshake. Dr. David Gross would begin his life as a country vet on June 9, 1960. This book was a joy to read. I laughed, cried, and hoped the story would not end.
