2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. A mulligan stew with a few choice chunks By Karl Janssen The problem with Revolution and Other Essays is that there's too little "Revolution" and far too much "Other". This collection is a hodgepodge of Jack London's early nonfiction writings, in which he waxes poetic on subjects various and diverse, among them architecture ("The House Beautiful"), globalization ("The Shrinkage of the Planet"), literature (Maxim Gorky in "Fomá Gordyéeff" and Rudyard Kipling in "These Bones Shall Rise Again"), zoopsychology ("The Other Animals"), and the rise of Asia as a world power ("The Yellow Peril"). Uncharacteristic of London, the majority of these pieces are written in rather decorative prose, adorned with flowery language and gratuitous literary references. Even diehard fans of London will find most of these essays too esoteric in subject matter and too antiquated in style to be considered a necessary read.Fortunately, a few worthy pieces redeem this volume and elevate it to the realm of readability. The title piece, "Revolution", is a state-of-the-union address for socialism in the year 1905. It serves as a stirring call to arms to the world's 7,000,000 comrades, and a warning to the uninitiated that the revolt of the working class is imminent. "What Life Means to Me" is a mini-manifesto of London's political thought. In it he provides an abbreviated autobiography charting his gradual transformation from a naive child with grand illusions to an educated socialist confronting the hypocrisy of a capitalist society. The only piece of fiction in this volume is a masterful short story entitled "Goliah". It's a sci-fi thriller about a seemingly omnipotent mystery man who appears on the world stage, cripples the military forces of the superpowers, and demands that society reorganize itself into a rational utopia. It is an audacious and exciting tale which bears some similarities to London's brilliant novel The Iron Heel. With the exception of the pieces I've singled out above, Revolution and Other Essays is a volume casual readers of London would do best to skip. "The Somnambulists" and "The Dignity of Dollars" will also be of value to those with a fervent interest in London's politics, but if you're looking for a really good collection of London's political writings, I would suggest War of the Classes. For those who are only interested in London's fiction, just read "Goliah".

The Lost Girl, by D. H. Lawrence

Review “[Lawrence was] a writer with an extraordinary sense of the physical world, of the colour and texture and shape of things, for whom the body was alive and the problems of the body insistent and important.” —Virginia Woolf

From the Publisher Under-appreciated until now, The Lost Girl is perhaps D.H. Lawrence's most beautiful, thoroughly contemporary, love story. This captivating novel charts the journey of a woman caught between two worlds and two lives-one mired in dreary, industrial England and a life of convention, the other set in the vibrant Italian landscape holding the promise of sensual liberation. Alvina Houghton is fading into spinsterhood when she meets Naples-born Cicio, a vaudeville dancer who draws her into a dance of seduction, reawakening her desire as she defies her stifling upper-class life.

Truly compelling in it's intricate details of a young woman trying to find herself. Literally. She goes on the 'universal' self journey and discovers that she was lost and finally finds her identity and sensuality in the man she loves. D.H. Lawrence has a wonderful way of not wrapping up the ending in a nice, neat little package. As always, Lawrence is the ultimate man of mystery, sensual needs and desires. A "must read" for those who love to read Lawrence and for those who never have!

13 of 13 people found the following review helpful. Soul Searching By A Customer Just like SISTER CARRIE, THE LOST GIRL is about a young woman searching for her place in the world. Meaning, floucing from one man to another, flirting, playing, getting engaged then dashing away for fun. And just like JEANNIE GERHARDT, this old man gets herself in trouble. But the most fascinating part of this book is it's glimps into her background. How she was brought up in a wealthy and rich household, only to try out different occupations against her father's wishes, then ends up as a lower classed female in life. Very tragic.

16 of 18 people found the following review helpful. A Wonderful Find By Rhett Clements This book was given to me on the last day of High School in 1972 by a girl friend. I've kept this book ever since and it ranks up there with my all time favorite books even though I agree with one other reviewer that this is not the best example of Lawrence's work. However, with that said, this book also has a heart and tenderness that really meant something to me. I'm amazed no one has ever written a screenplay of this work since it's worth it. It was the only book Lawrence ever won a prize for, which says something about it. Take a chance and read it.

Kenneth Eugene Peltier, Sr., was born the tenth child of a family of 12, January 6, 1923, in Shawnee, Oklahoma. He was destined to be one of the "Greatest Generation." He helped his family through tough times, played sports at Shawnee High School and got married while still a student, a marriage that was to last 46 years. After Pearl Harbor he entered NYA welding school then worked in the shipyards in California. While there heplayed semi-pro football. He joined the navy and was on the carrier USS Franklin when it was bombed, killing hundreds of his shipmates. At the end of the war and back in Shawnee Kenneth ran a grocery store then was at Tinker AFB until he retired. He was involved in Potawatomi Tribal affairs. After the death of his wife he married again and told her of growing up in the country, playing football, life in the navy, raising his four children . . . the highlights and sad days of his life. She transcribed the stories, making copies for his family. At his death it was obvious his story, one of so many of his generation, needed to be told. He was an ordinary man who led an extraordinary life.

The Strains were a prominent family in Greencastle Indiana in the early years of the 20th Century. When the US entered the First World War, three of the nine siblings, Fred, Evan and Jim joined to serve their country. This is their story as told in the many letters they sent home to their family. Interspersed with pictures of the central characters and their families, reproductions of holiday programs, and 64 postcards of towns and attractions in France, this volume will be of interest to historians, veterans, and the thousands of Strain family members scattered across the country. Edited with commentary by their descendants, Carl E. Strain and Dorothy Strain Bagshaw.

This collection assembles four of Blackwood’s greatest stories: “The Insanity of Jones,” “The Man Who Found Out,” “The Glamour of the Snow,” and “Sand.” The son of a preacher, Blackwood had a life-long interest in the supernatural, the occult, and spiritualism, and firmly believed that humans possess latent psychic powers. The autobiography Episodes Before Thirty (1923) tells of his lean years as a journalist in New York. In the late 1940s, Blackwood had a television program on the BBC on which he read . . . ghost stories!

About the Author Algernon Henry Blackwood, CBE (14 March 1869 – 10 December 1951) was an English short story writer and novelist, one of the most prolific writers of ghost stories in the history of the genre. He was also a journalist and a broadcasting narrator. S. T. Joshi has stated that "his work is more consistently meritorious than any weird writer's except Dunsany's" and that his short story collection Incredible Adventures (1914) "may be the premier weird collection of this or any other century".

For fans of Ashton Smith, of Machen, and of Lovecraft there's eldritch and otherworldly horror. But beyond that Blackwood's works are unique in their ability to evoke an almost spiritual sense of awe.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. what is sanity? By chrisam This is the main issue of this great collection by Blackwood. One can't be sure whether the weird stuff is really happening or if the trappers are losing their minds in the woods. Four mind-blowing tales by a master of horror.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Read on a stormy night when everyone is gone. By Amy Michelle Mosier Okay, I didn't read the first nor the last story (a bit too long for my taste). I did read The Man Who Found Out and The Glamour of the Snow. Both deliver enough spooks to make it worthwhile. The Man Who Found Out is about a mysterious set of tablets and even though this was written like a hundred years ago, it still stands out for being unique in the way it sets the mood and in the unusual and funny way it ends. I was not expecting that ending. The Glamour of the Snow, although the story tells you what is happening, it still is unnerving to think that the main character is just going along with this stranger, not thinking about the possible consequences. Both stories leave a lot of room for your imagination; they are open-ended in their conclusions and while that may not suit everyone, I was impressed.

This little book is intended as a memorial to the women who came in The Mayflower, and their comrades who came later in The Ann and The Fortune, who maintained the high standards of home life in early Plymouth Colony. There is no attempt to make a genealogical study of any family. The effort is to reveal glimpses of the communal life during 1621-1623. This is supplemented by a few silhouettes of individual matrons and maidens to whose influence we may trace increased resources in domestic life and education.

The Mayflower Women By Bloomsbury This book was somewhat amateurish in its presentation, but very interesting.A good description of the long sea voyage, with all the hardships faced by the passengers & crew. It's more of a collection of known facts rather than a narrative, but a very good starting point for those interested in the topic. More background could have been given, after all the women boarded the ship fully grown, each with their own personal histories.Well worth reading.

The deeper the darkness, the brighter the light.

For more than a decade, Minister Analiese Wagner has felt privileged to lead her parishioners along a well-lit path. Her commitment has never been seriously tested until the frigid night she encounters a homeless family huddling in the churchyard. Offering them shelter in a vacant parish house apartment and taking teenage Shiloh Fowler - a girl desperate to rescue her parents - under her wing, she tests the loyalty and faith of her congregation.

Isaiah Colburn, the Catholic priest who was her first mentor and the man for whom she secretly longed, understands her struggles only too well. At a crossroads, he has suddenly reappeared in her life, torn between his priesthood and his growing desire for a future with Analiese. Divided between love and the vows they've taken, both must face the possibilities of living very different lives or continuing to serve their communities. With a defeated family's trust and her own happiness on the line, Analiese must define for herself where darkness ends and light begins.

9 of 9 people found the following review helpful. Heartwarming and inspiring By K. Branfield The Color of Light is another thought-provoking and poignant addition to Emilie Richards’ wonderful Goddesses Anonymous series. In this outing, minister Analiese “Ana” Wagner’s judgment is called into question when she steps in to help a homeless family. As if she does not have enough on her plate, she is surprised by the sudden reappearance of her longtime friend and mentor Father Isaiah Colburn. Although they have been out of touch for several years, they easily pick up where they left off but Ana is disconcerted by the realization that she is still in love with Isaiah. Unbeknownst to Ana, Isaiah is close to finalizing a decision that will change the course of his life. Both of them are at a crossroads that leaves each of them questioning whether they have chosen the right path and if not, what comes next for them professionally and personally? While Ana is not having a crisis of faith, she does begin to question whether or not she wants to continue her career as a minister. She is continually butting heads with some of the church’s leadership and members of the congregation and her days are filled with putting out fires and juggling meetings. Her decision to help the Fowler family is met with resistance and Ana is frustrated by some of her parishioner’s lack of compassion for their situation. Trying to get the family some assistance is a burden she willingly takes on, but Ana is coming dangerously close to burning out as she devotes most of her time to helping others.Isaiah is also having trouble reconciling the demands of priesthood with his personal life. He is on a sabbatical to try to decide whether or not to leave the priesthood when he reconnects with Ana. Although he is close to making a final decision about his future, both Isaiah and Ana are concerned about the effect his choice will have on the future of their relationship and their careers. The story arc about the Fowler family is particularly heart wrenching. A job loss devastated the family and they have been trying to get back on their feet for quite some time. Much of the family’s care rests on the shoulders of fourteen year old Shiloh due to her father Man’s depression and her mother Belle’s poor health. Ana steps in to help Man find work and get Belle some much needed medical attention and as their lives finally begin to turn around, Shiloh discovers she can rely on her parents to take care of her after a traumatic incident. The Color of Light is a very heartwarming and inspiring story. As in previous installments of the Goddesses Anonymous series, Emilie Richards raises awareness of social issues in a realistic and straightforward manner. There is also a strong spiritual element to the storyline that is quite thought-provoking. All in all, it is an absolutely delightful story that tackles some real life problems with a great deal of compassion that old and new fans are sure to love.I received a complimentary copy for review.

Learning how to listen By m. e. berg One of the most interesting things about this book is the number of different stories that are intertwined.basically, this is the story of a woman who is an unmarried minister and a longtime friend and mentor of hers who is a Jesuit Priest. There are also a family who are homeless and indigent because of the economy where they had lived and how they gradually found themselves individually and as a family. There are also the members of her congregation and a group of women called the 'Goddesses'. But mostly it is a moving story of redemption and learning to list to yourself, to your friends and enemies and to your God in whatever form you worship. This book is moving and sensitive and made me think and feel in ways I frequently forget to do

Staley First, let me say that Emilie Richards is one of my favorite authors and that I love the Goddess series. This book sucked me righn and continued with this series of stories about these women. I was completely engaged in the story and the characters. This book centered around Annileese (spelling?), the minister of the group and I was curious how her character would be handled. I grew up in a pastor's home and most of the time pastors and their families in fictional settings, whether TV or books or movies, resemble nothing close to reality. In this case, however, the character was realistic and really represented why people go into ministry. And, it was a great story about real people who love and help each other.
