About the Author Danielle de Picciotto is a traveler. Born in Tacoma, Washington she spent her early years all over North America due to her father’s position in the US Army until discovering West Berlin, Germany―a city which no longer exists. There she was able to interact with and influence its community for more than two decades, co-founding the Berlin Love Parade, expanding her field of artistic expression. With her husband Alexander Hacke, bassist of Einstürzende Neubauten, she decided to give up her house in Berlin to discover new horizons and has been traveling ever since.

I have come back to it again and again, picking it up at odd moments, studying the illustrations, reading it as a parable for the insanity of bifurcated existence as creative people desperate for freedom but tethered to the constraints of daily life. Those of us who are artists, musicians, travelers will especially appreciate the way the author indulges and divulges the details of her daily life and the risks that she and her husband took to wind up on the road. "We Are Gypsies Now" is a beautiful, rambling, work of poetry, image and storytelling which reveals what it is to actually be living in this world. Right now.

The book is beautifully illustrated in a truly unique style and contains perceptive commentary on worldwide issues such as gentrification, access to healthcare, homelessness, the commodification of art (and everything else), etc. and is beautifully illustrated in a truly unique style. Highly recommended for not only artists of all stripes, but anyone who wants to explore deeper meanings to their existence beyond money and material possessions.

A book about life on the road. Thoughtfully written and beautifully illustrated. The fact that even successful musicians need to become homeless now a days to survive is sad. Nobody that does not really have to would give up their home, it is neither a privaledge nor a fun ride. The fact that this author managed to write this book in a light mood is admirable, one can feel the darker undertones. I respect their courage.

From the Back Cover A bona fide classic, originally published in 1872, Mountaineering in the Sierra Nevada is still exciting reading. It describes the perils and pleasures experienced by Clarence King (1842-1901) while conducting the first geological survey of California in the 1860s. His language was equal to the marvels he found, and here with unfading brilliance are his accounts of scaling such mountains as Tyndall, Shasta, and Whitney. The chapters on the Yosemite Valley and surrounding High Sierras were written while he was surveying the boundaries of a newly designated national park. There are also delightful vignettes of western characters, including a Sierra artist and a family of Pike County hog farmers. King, who in 1879 became the first director of the United States Geological Survey, will always be remembered for Mountaineering in the Sierra Nevada, which was praised by Wallace Stegner, Van Wyck Brooks, and Henry Seidel Canby as a watermark of frontier literature.

About the Author Clarence King (born 1842) of Rhode Island rode horseback across the continent in 1863. In California, he was hired to work on Whitney's geological survey of the state, beginning the adventures recorded in this book.

By elcajonfarms This classic work by one of the great yarn-spinners of all time includes some wonderful descriptive information about California places and people in the early 1860s and some gripping, heartstopping tales about King's own mountaineering exploits. Even in his early 20s, Clarence King was recognized for leaderhip and intellectual ability. He served with the Army Topographic Engineers on the survey of the Western United States along the 40th parallel and was an intimate of Henry Adams and his wife in their small social/intellectual circle in Washington D.C. (See Patricia O'Toole's "The Five of Hearts"). He established his national reputation for being a shrewd, practical man of science when he discovered and exposed a stock swindle based on salted ore and fraudulent assay samples when asked to evaluate a mining promotion in Colorado. "Mountaineering in the Sierra Nevada" is a non-chronological, semi-autobiographical reconstruction of some of King's time (circa 1862-63) with Josiah Whitney's Survey, commissioned by the State legislature to catalogue and evaluate California geologic and mineral resources. It is an entertaining and engrossing narration of one foolhardy, death-defying exploit after another. Like those of John Muir (another classic, albeit overrated talesman of the Range of Light), Clarence King's numerous renditions of his own hairsbreadth escapes from impossibly precarious positions by the power of luck, pluck and sheer physical prowess, while entertaining and enthralling, were made possible only by his own chronic rash foolhardiness, if not by tremendous powers of exaggeration. A better man was his fellow draft-dodger (the Civil War was going on back East all the while they were dancing around in the mountains of California, after all), William Brewer. Brewer served longer, harder and more responsibly than King in the Whitney Survey. Brewer also wrote a factually more thorough and reliable description of conditions in the young state of California in a series of letters home to his family in New England (collected as "Up and Down California"), with none of King's histrionics but just as entertaining in its own way. King's book does include some unique insights. One is his near-comic description of the "Piker" rubes (from Pike County, Missouri), rural folk residing in the foothills of the Southern San Joaquin Valley, which can be read as a precourser of all hilarious mountain folk descriptions, from Li'l Abner through the Beverley Hillbillies to Deliverance. But truth be told (rarely enough, one suspects), this book is mostly about the indefatigable King and his own personal exploits in the Southern Sierra. As a result, this book makes for a slightly less than satisfying cud to chew over, but it tastes pretty good the first time on the way down.While King's literary talent was substantial, his writing (and indeed his entire public life and historic reputation) were seemingly unilluminated in any way by his own domestic arrangements. These included a life-long love relationship and common law marriage to a black woman, Ada, with whom he maintained a household including their several children. Not only did he keep the marriage secret from all of his prominent social contacts, but he kept his own notorious identity and true name a secret from his wife and children until just before he died. Still, under the constant strain of maintaining a double identity, he continued to support his family and maintained an exhausting schedule of international travel, geological consulting and writing until he died prematurely from consumption at the age of 59. (See Thurman Wilkins' "Clarence King"). You won't find any mention of King's real family in anything King wrote for public consumption, or even for the consumption of his well-placed friends. The more recent hagiographic reconstruction of King's relationship with his publicly unacknowledged wife, Ada, "Passing Strange: A Gilded Age Tale of Love and Deception Across the Color Line", by Martha A. Sandweiss, would be an excellent counterpoint to this mostly dishonest tale of self-invention and hyperbole.

Whether they are true stories, well that's for you to decide. But really, it doesn't matter. You'll read of him dangling from the edge of great cliffs and running from wild west bandits, all the while keeping the reader wondering how he'll ever live to tell the tale. Overall the book is a collection of stories by a man who loved the Sierra Nevada, for it vast wilderness was his playground.

Bold Tales, Well Told By Kurt Harding Mountaineering in the Sierra Nevada is essential reading for anyone who both loves those mountains and wants to get a glimpse of life there before it reached the level of settlement it has today. Whether or not all the stories here are strictly factual, they are often both gripping and entertaining. Additionally, they bring the reader some sense of what rural central California life was like at that time.Clarence King was a gifted wordsmith. His hilarious, politically incorrect descriptions of western characters are reminiscent of some of the best incisive commentary of Mark Twain. Then his descriptions of climbing in the mountains are so intense that you may even wince as you are carried along as he describes some of the most hair-raising brushes with death. Those who have been where King describes will certainly feel what King has written as they read along.One reviewer, though entertained, seems to doubt what King says. I don't. Though there may be a little hyperbole in King's description of events, the reader should remember that at that time the average guy was far more physically fit than the average guy today. You had to be or you didn't make it, because every day in the wilderness was fraught with challenge and physical danger.All in all, you could say that this book is a collection of bold tales well told. I particularly like the stories of his crossing the desert coming to California, of the hog farmers, of his escape from determined bandits, of his ultimate conquest of Mt Whitney, and of all the colorful characters he meets in his path both in the Sierras and at Shasta.And though some might take him for a bigot because of some of his comments about the natives, remember that he saves the sharpest point of his pen for the most worthless characters of his own stock who abound in the California of his day. Whatever you think about what King has written, once you pick this up you'll find it hard to put down until you've finished the last paragraph.

You can read history books about what the Nazis did to Jews but the personal story of how one family survived and prospered is truely inspiring and helps you gain new insight into the tragic events that took place. The reader is exposd to the decisive and quick major decision making by Ralph's father in the face of extreme uncertainty that saved the family. For transparency purposes I must advise that I worked for may years with Ralph at Avery Dennison and now live near him in Santa Barbara but in 35 years of friendship I never knew the full story until reading his book. If you are inerested in well writen biographies about how families and people survive awful events and then move on to succeed in life, this is a must read.

By Santa Barbara Jim Ralph Baxter has had an amazingly interesting life. I have waited for this book for many years. Ralph's individual story is captivating. The history of his family had a tragic ending in Germany but his life in the United States has given a very positive uplift to a family history that could have had an awful ending.Rolf Bachrach was born in Germany in 1925 but his family fled the NAZIs. His parents took him and his brother to England. His father had the wisdom to emigrate to the United States in 1941 and change the family name to Baxter. Ralph was an officer in the U.S. army during WW II and graduated from Cal Berkeley with an engineering degree. After concluding his very successful business career, he moved to Santa Barbara where he has been a generous philanthropist who has shown great concern for both individuals and the community.

5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. A Worthwhile Read By Matthew Rozsa As a student of American history, I found "Presidential Problems" by Grover Cleveland to be an enjoyable treat. The book is hardly flawless, of course; the prose (much like the rest of President Cleveland's writing and rhetoric) tends toward the monotonous style used by many nineteenth-century attorneys, and the material itself wastes a valuable opportunity to plumb the mind of its subject (unlike the great presidential memoirs of men like Ulysses Grant and William Clinton). Nevertheless, it effectively and often captivatingly explores four of the subjects that were grappled with by one of our nation's most underappreciated Chief Executives (the reassertion of Executive prerogatives through the repeal of the Tenure of Office Act, the government intervention in the Pullman Strike of 1894, the selling of bonds as a means of extricating our nation from the depression of 1893-1897, and the first significant flexing of American military muscle during the Venezuela Boundary Crisis). In doing this, it helps the reader understand how S. Grover Cleveland strengthened the office of the presidency, brought integrity back to an institution that had been corrupted since 1869, sought to apply a political philosophy that could best be described as proto-libertarian, attempted to deal with some of the nascent issues that arose as America left behind the prejudices of the Civil War era and began to focus on the issues of the Industrial Age, and overall left an indelible imprint on the White House during his eight years in power. I have always deemed it a shame that President Cleveland is best remembered for having served two inconsecutive terms; while this piece of trivia should serve as a fair indication of the success of his first administration, it is nevertheless a grave injustice that such an important historical figure should have settled into an undeserved obscurity. While this book may not be accessible to all, it is a must-read for anyone who wishes to learn more about the presidency - and especially from the perspective of one of that position's most important leaders.

About the Author "Monsieur Cadichon: Memoirs of a Donkey" was written in France by Sophie Feodorovna Rostopchine, the Countess de Segur, in the early 1860s after The Fleurville Trilogy and has sold millions of copies. It is still regarded as one of France's most loved children's stories.

About the translator: The Australian version of "Cadichon" has been lovingly translated by Australian Stephanie Smee, a former lawyer and NAATI translator. Stephanie was raised by French-speaking and French teaching parents and has completed an Honours degree in French at the University of Sydney.

Childhood in France in the 19th century By EAVG Having avidly read the entire works of the Comtesse de Ségur as a child, and re-read them with great pleasure countless times, I cannot rate them at any less than five stars. It does need good knowledge of French, but for any student of French, child or adult, I would highly recommend these books as they are fun to read, not too difficult and a great lesson on how to write extremely realistic dialogue in admirable French. Although the author was Russian born, her French could serve as an example to many contemporary French people who seem to have forgotten their spelling and grammar. One of my particular favourites is "Les Nouveaux Contes de Fées", some highly original fairy stories, all of which I remember with affection after all these years.If you have by any chance some of the books by Mme de Ségur in the early 20th century edition of the Bibliothèque Rose, you can cling on to them as they are worth a tidy amount of money.

By Andrew From Rubble to Royalty is an excellent book!It’s hard for me to put into words exactly why it stands out as different than so many of the other books that I’ve wound up being led to read related to this topic – but I believe it is the fact that Tammy is so open not just about what happened, but that she shares in such a totally transparent manner about the entire process of healing emotionally and spiritually that truly doesn’t get spoken about as much in many other books.Just the things on Page 226 alone, which are so raw and true, are outstanding by themselves (as an example).Faith, healing, trust, seeking and understanding truth, and relationship are all a process. How approachable this process and relationship with God is as His children, is clearly visible thanks to Tammy’s transparent and vulnerable sharing of her journey and relationship with God. What is also clearly visible is the faithfulness of God, and how approachable He Himself is.There’s a sense of wholeness in what Tammy has written to be able to talk so openly about all that she shares, and for that – congratulations Tammy. Praise God for His story being told through you and through this book.

Healing Through the Grace of God By EB Tammy Kennedy's new book, From Rubble to Royalty, is an inspiring story of her difficult journey from an abused, broken child to a caring and compassionate adult. Like The Glass Castle, the book is riveting! This true story is much more frightening than any fictional horror story could possibly be. Tammy's alcoholic mother betrays her time and time again. And yet, Tammy is amazing and resourceful in her ability to use humor and perserverence, to become healthy. It is through God's grace and Tammy's forgiveness of all those who had wounded her that she finds inner peace. Her story will serve as a wonderful source of redemption for many other wounded souls who yearn to heal.EB

By michelle this was a good book. two sisters look so much alike that they switch places. one marries and the other, older sister, takes on her persona of wild child. the husband of the one that got married is under the impression that he married the "mature" sister, he was wrong:). altogether a cute book. the only thing that was a little hard to follow were the names of all the men in love with the single sister. i just pushed through and figured it out. this book also had some sinister stuff happening, which went just far enough, any more and i wouldnt have liked it. i dont like gruesome books or mysteries. enough of that goes on in real life, i read for enjoyment:)4 stars because of the confusing mens names and also because i think that they could have done more with the married sister.
