Two Tents is Jim Haskell’s memoir of section hiking the entire Appalachian Trial over two decades and his self-discovery as a husband, father and man. It depicts how Jim’s childhood fantasy evolved into an achievement for his lifetime. Jim relates his adventures with bears and perilous cliffs; his memories of spectacular thunderstorms and sunsets; his stories about the diverse people and places he encountered along the way. He also serves up a generous helping of the 2,200-mile AT’s nearly 100-year history, including his insights into the trail’s two “feuding founders.” The stories in Two Tents are true. However, Jim uses a fictionalized two-day hike with a character named Rex to relate his experiences through a series of vignettes. “Though the device is unconventional in what is, for the most part, a nonfiction book, the ploy works,” stated the Bangor Daily News in the fall of 2015. “The author is able to frame the real tales he shares with readers through trailside ‘conversations’ with Rex.” Two Tents appeals to hikers and non-hikers alike. The Maine Sunday Telegram’s review in December 2015: “You don’t have to be planning a hike on the Appalachian Trail to enjoy Two Tents; Jim Haskell gives you the highlights and much else beside. So put your feet up and relax.”

Haskell I was curious about this book for a couple of reasons including the last name of the author matching mine. Secondly, I have done some hiking in the White Mountains as a camp counselor back in the late 60s which included segments of the Appalachian Trail. At first I was a little put off by parts of the book since parts were fiction in terms of the arrangement of the story and protection of identities of strangers met on the hike (which is explained in the beginning). So parts of the book rated a three -- enjoyable but somewhat difficult to see where it was leading. The last part of the book was excellent starting with the history of the Appalachian Trail and using some of Jim Haskell's considerable history skills and Phi Beta Kappa scholarship (Boston University). His description of unexpected obstacles, rescues of hikers, dramatic weather events, swollen rivers, failures in preparation, and encounters with bears, were some of the highlights. The triumph of the last day which completed the trek was also heart-warming and shared with a number of his supporters -- both family and friends. His hike was completed about five years before he finished the book and since he did the trail in segments it is a different tale than what would have been told by a through-hiker.

Setting a Life Goal and Achieving it in Hiking Boots By Amazon Customer You never know what kind of day you'll have when you set out hiking.Rainfall makes trails unpassable, mapped routes get altered after the guidebook's published, and what looks like an easy descent can become a near death experience.Haskell tells of his own 21-year long quest to hike every mile of the 2,000-mile Appalachian Trail in sections of 2 weeks or less while managing a marriage, working at a nonprofit and raising a son. At home he read trail guides and planned hikes, packed freeze-dried meals and secured rides. When hiking he experienced the fleeting joy of a ridge-top Shenandoah sunrise, the serenity of solitary days in the woods and the raw fear of finding trail in waist-deep unbroken snow. Unforgettable people drop into the story, sharing rides, tips, equipment and campfire stories. With each hike he added more miles to his list. This is not a book of self-revelation disguised as a hiking account, but it's a story of a person with a goal who set out to achieve it and didn't let go. Haskell shares his mistakes and those moments he received 'trail magic,' those unasked-for bits of good karma that come just when you can't make your way forward. Section-hikers don't get the respect that thru-hikers do, but arguably it's more fun to take time to explore the land you're moving through, stop and visit a Civil War site or an aboriginal settlement. And shower, sleep in a bed and eat fresh food before returning to the trail. The world of AT hikers is a world unto itself, a unique place whose inhabitants take trail names, share deeply personal stories and trade practical info on trail facilities. Once in a while they carry each other out on stretchers. It's never boring, and neither is this highly readable account of taking on a challenge to get from Maine to Georgia one step at a time.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Disappointing By jlvickerysr I have read several books about the AT and this one was a disappointment. The author spent too much time with self indulging stories about his personal life off trail and not enough about the AT experience.

Meraki is a unique collection of poetry that hints at the darker side of love, exploring the destruction love can create. The poems in this collection are weaved with words, soft dreams and fairy tales. Meraki is the perfect accompaniment to a Sunday morning and a cup of coffee, but would also be paired well with a glass of wine and a soft rain.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. and just everything about it is wonderful and magical By Evelynn Before I get started with all that I want to say about Michelle's Meraki, I want to direct your attention to the absolutely jaw-dropping cover. Just look at it! And marvel in its wonderfulness. and just everything about it is wonderful and magical. If you're one for beautiful little sketches, Meraki definitely is the anthology for you. The sketches are placed mostly in the beginning of the book, and are connected to the poetry that follows them. They're beautifully drawn, with a simplicity that makes them all the more enchanting. They're almost like little previews into the pretty poems.Okay, now the actual writing part. I really, really love Michelle's writing. It's so exquisitely descriptive and i love the metaphors and descriptions. She really does a good job on capitalizing on the small, seemingly insignificant aspects of life and transforming them into something wonderfully sweet or heartbreaking.Technically speaking, Michelle's anthology isn't without errors; there were definitely a few I could spot while reading, and sometimes in attempting to either keep the flow or poetic nature of the writing, the structure isn't all correct. There are a few awkward bits here and there in the syntax and building of the sentence and phrases, but they don't detract too much from the reading, and have no effect on the overall impact of her message.I really like how she addresses a myriad of different aspects of life in such a short, succinct manner. Michelle doesn't only address the sweet, floral side of love, she also takes the reader for a whirl into the darker side of life. Even if you aren't the biggest fan of poetry, I think Michelle's anthology is definitely worth a peek, for all the small, powerful moments she gifts you with her words. Meraki was a dream to read, and I most certainly will be coming back again and again to revisit Michelle's amazing poetry.

Modern Poetry that Brings Vitality to Life By Chase_Books 'Meraki' as it states in the beginning of this vitality filled prose, says, "to do something with soul, creativity, or love..."'Meraki' by Andrea Michelle is such a beautifully worded story of poems that bring to life the essence of what it means to be a human being. She has crafted each word, each sentence, each thought in the most precise of way as to lend the read an emotion that we all feel day-in and day-out throughout the banalities of life, by bring the story of love and hurt, heartache and passion all within the realms of our existence.David Foster Wallace said, "Fiction's about what is it to be a human being."This book does just that. Nature's Pandora's box is full. If the lid is opened, it will overflow everywhere. Creator's creation has to swallow the joy and pains, happiness and sorrow, good and bad which go hand and hand. This is the vast universe. The fate rocks the cradle up and down and the river of lullabies flows. A little paint and a small brush are enough for a writer to create his own world of literature. The impressions in my eyes and ears or on heart are the imprints in my writings.

Kelby is a phenomenal storyteller with characters who are well-developed and fascinating. This is a complex novel, written in non-linear fashion, so it takes full concentration to stay with it, but you will be glad you did. Wonderful novel.

The formal playfulness of Christopher Carter Sanderson's novel, THE TOO-BRIEF CHRONICLE OF JUDAH LOWE, is visually apparent at a glance. It consists of two parts, each composed of a series of short fragments. The first part, 79/79/'79, has 79 titled sections of 79 words each, and is set in 1979. The second, @1000thenovel, is set in 1980, and consists of roughly 1000 tweets of 140 characters each; the story also has 140 characters. The book is far more, however, than a formalist game. It is a deeply affecting Bildungsroman in which an adolescent explores many different windows into himself and his emerging world, and where the unity and plurality of experience are vividly encountered together. It's a masterful experiment in the best sense, and a deeply affecting story.

The Too-Brief Chronicle of Judah Lowe, by Christopher Carter Sanderson

Review "... a coherent picture of a set of students who slack off and show initiative in roughly equal measure... Stand-out tweets often showcase condensed metaphors...Moe... is well-realized: both emblematic of his time and an outlier.... An unusual bildungsroman... transcends the limitations of its formats."  --Kirkus Reviews"What's amazing (& heady as a mile high cocktail) isn't only the book; it's that it's flying 2 us First Class, tweet by tweet."          - Sonia Taiz, author of IN THE KING'S ARMS and MOTHERING HEIGHTS"Twitter users are following the story. Tweet by tweet.... like a series of typical tweets that arise out of the consciousness of the central characters. This is a brilliant scheme for reaching an audience that increasingly immerses itself into short bursts of thought through Twitter, text messaging, Facebook..."                                     - Kevin Bates indiebookwormreview.com"...unlike any other novel you've ever read... Actually, when you think about it, what better medium could one find to impart information about teenagers than Twitter... you wouldn't want to be left behind with all the other clueless old people if the trend catches on, would you?...Try it."          - Jean F. gather.com "Read @1000thenovel, nerd-cool, first novel written all in tweets, set in a preppy 80's High School." - Fiona Walsh"...first novel published in tweets by brilliant Christopher Carter Sanderson. Follow. Read. Digest."                   - Mary Sparr, Young Mary's Record of Wild And Beautiful Things

From the Author The truth, 140 characters at a time. Looking back without lying about the shattered fragments of 1979 and 1980. Drop in again and again; the chapters are short. Memories before social media, barked out on social media... that somehow captures the quality of that time better than anything could have then. Jump in.

From the Inside Flap "...1979 and 1980... Conceived together, as in this remarkable novel, the eternal and the transient may make us feel that as the past is radically specific, mortal, and lovable, so is the present and the future. - Jacob Smullyan"
