The Heart of a Woman, by Baroness Emmuska Orczy

About the Author Baroness Orczy was born in Hungary in 1865, the daughter of Baron Felix Orczy, a landed aristocrat and well-known composer and conductor. Orczy moved with her parents from Budapest to Brussels and Paris, where she was educated. She studied art in London and exhibited work in the Royal Academy. She married Montagu Barstow and together they worked as illustrators and jointly published an edition of Hungarian folk tales. Orczy became famous in 1905 with the publication of The Scarlet Pimpernel (originally a play co-written with her husband). Its background was the French Revolution and its swashbuckling hero, Sir Percy Blakeney, was to prove immensely popular. Sequel books followed and film and TV versions were later made. Orczy also wrote detective stories which still prove popular and are equally acclaimed within this genre. She died in 1947.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. An excellent mystery By Esmeralda This is an excellent story by the author of the Scarlet Pimpernel, but of an entirely different type. An imposter interferes with a suite of lives and an earl and his friends and family must sort out the truth. Some delightful twists and turns in fin de ciercle London society.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. A must read for Orczy fans. By Heather S I am attempting to read all of her books. She takes you back to a time of honor and integrity when you handled your adversaries without compromising who you were. The Baroness Orczy can tell a love story without it being a sex story or a romance novel. There can be a crime and a mystery without extreme violence in her works.

"All ready, Miss Welse, though I'm sorry we can't spare one of the steamer's boats." Frona Welse arose with alacrity and came to the first officer's side. "We're so busy," he explained, "and gold-rushers are such perishable freight, at least—" "I understand," she interrupted, "and I, too, am behaving as though I were perishable. And I am sorry for the trouble I am giving you, but—but—" She turned quickly and pointed to the shore. "Do you see that big log-house? Between the clump of pines and the river? I was born there." "Guess I'd be in a hurry myself," he muttered, sympathetically, as he piloted her along the crowded deck.

This book by Jack London is like reading a first hand account (he was there) of the "Stampeders" and the hardships of getting to the Yukon looking for a fortune that few found. Easy, interesting read!

A lesser known (to me, at least) Jack London By Paulino Serrano Valero This is a very different work from the most famous books by the author, those which turned Jack London into one of the luminaries of literature in English. However, I found here everything "Londonesque" (please forgive the neologism) but the fast-paced action. This is a novel more along the lines of "The Valley of the Moon" than those of "Call of the Wild".Irrespective of this being the first Jack London's work you read, or your already being a fan of the great writer from San Francisco, you'll come back for more. Guaranteed.

By Ardy Jack London writes heroic novels set in environments few have experienced and none that are living today could remember. For that and the speed of the story it is worth a read BUT it is a disjointed and difficult read. The ending is absolutely lousy. I thought my kindle version had not been fully scanned...Frona and her father are part of a larger than life group of characters in the book. I got very annoyed with Frona after dumping Corliss and then stating she is 'not here to marry'. Then promptly gets engaged to St Vincent. One of his very much lesser lights. He might have got too caught up with his politics and too little caught up with the story.

Joseph Crosby Lincoln (February 13, 1870 – March 10, 1944) was an American author of novels, poems, and short stories, many set in a fictionalized Cape Cod. Lincoln's work frequently appeared in popular magazines such as the Saturday Evening Post and The Delineator. Lincoln was aware of contemporary naturalist writers, such as Frank Norris and Theodore Dreiser, who used American literature to plumb the depths of human nature, but he rejected this literary exercise. Lincoln claimed that he was satisfied "spinning yarns" that made readers feel good about themselves and their neighbors. Two of his stories have been adapted to film.

It is such a timeless classic. Placed picturesquely in the early 1900 New England area. About a little girl (Mary Agusta Lathrop--called Mary-'Gusta) who is left an orphan after her stepfather dies. Two of her stepfather's old sea faring business partners are left to take care of her.

In Where the Wind Can Find It, people are swayed off–course. From a ski resort to a church rectory, an outgrown hometown to the wilderness itself, Ben Nickol’s characters find themselves at the mercy of forces at once within themselves and profoundly beyond their control. This predicament, the kind that comes with everyday living, offers no clean escapes, yet whether it is the legacy of a gambler, the impulses of an adulterer, or the despair of a washed–up athlete, this debut collection explores what it means to plot a route through one’s own flaws and the long shadows of personal history.

While some reviewers place an emphasis on the common themes such as lying or falsity, I think a better common thread for these stories is a sudden, palpable existential doubt. Claire, the protagonist in Missing, throws herself into a search for a missing child, not because it’s her job, but because she longs for something to fill the void of normality. Leslie, the sloshed golfer in Knotted, acts more like Meursault than Tiger Woods. “I want to be what people are, which of course is what I am, what I’ve always been. I’ll do what she says, provided she does some of what I say, and maybe we’ll overlap enough to stick.” In Like Gloves of Air, the strongest story in the collection, John has an “episode” and his reality suddenly becomes unmoored. He commits acts of mindless criminality, neither joined nor separate from reality, but “absorbed in the membrane of things.” He doubts his sanity, “but even when weeks passed and nothing weighed any heavier on his mind than petunias or carrots, there persisted in him some gravity that was less knowledge than what lay under knowledge, the way living is less blood than what runs in the blood, the pulse.” At its best Where the Wind Can Find It captures that pulse. Nickol is a talent to watch.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Nice look at the Papal States -- from an 1850 viewpoint By Mark A. Trauernicht The book listed here is a reprint of Volume III (of a three-volume set) only. Not sure why the first two volumes have not (yet?) been reprinted by Kessinger Publishing. It was originally published in 1850.As such, this volume covers only the period from Alexander III (pope from 1159-1181) to the Revolutions of 1848-49 and their immediate aftermath. The reader should also be aware that this book, while very informative, is written in a florid, Victorian-style English typical for 1850. This can make for somewhat difficult reading for those of us used to more straightforward 21st Century-style prose.
