The Critic, by Richard Brinsley Sheridan

Review (in full The Critic, or a Tragedy Rehearsed) Burlesque drama in three acts by Richard Brinsley Sheridan, produced in 1779 and published in 1781. A delightful satire on stage conventions, The Critic has always been thought much funnier than its model, The Rehearsal (1671) by George Villiers. It is the story of Puff, a literary public-relations man who has written a preposterous historical melodrama that embodies all the worst features of conventional verse dramas--among them bloated emotions, contrived plots, and absurd madness scenes. The critics of the title include the empty and pretentious poet Sir Fretful Plagiary and the petty, malicious critics Sneer and Dangle. -- The Merriam-Webster Encylopedia of Literature

About the Author David Crane is an author and former economics editor of the "Toronto Star".

After you read this wonderful book, rockstars and their music will never be the same By Marcianne Miller How to Talk to Rockstars is not an auto¬biographic tale, but it does uncover the soul of someone, like author Alli Marshall (current Arts Editor at Mountain Xpress), who passionately loves music. “In my personal life music plays a lot of different roles,” she says, “motivation, inspira¬tion, mood enhancer. I have different play lists for whatever I’m doing.” She sees her novel as “a love letter to music and the power of music. In some ways, it’s my ‘thank you’ to all the musicians I’ve met over the years.”Rockstars is a “quiet” novel, meaning there’s not much action, no murders or kid¬nappings, in fact, no one even falls off stage. It is, however, an exciting, can’t-put-down read, thanks to its raw look at the inner workings of a creative person. Bryn is a rare heroine, a female music writer in an industry populated mostly by men. With no friends, female or male, Bryn spends most of her days, and nights, very much alone. Why did Alli make Bryn so soli¬tary? “The really wonderful thing about music and why so many of us gravitate to it,” says Alli, “is because it creates community. Going to a show, even just listening to music, you’re with other people. I wanted Bryn to be alone to underscore the role of music.” …In real life, being interviewed by Alli Marshall is an absolute must for any musician who wants to make an impact in Asheville. Alli usually interviews by phone, for a half an hour. But even after doing almost 500 (!) interviews, Alli doesn’t find it easy. “It still causes me a lot of anxiety,” she admits. “Sometimes I’m hyperventilating right before an interview.”When I asked Alli for her definition of a rockstar, she gave me such an extraordinary answer that it changed my whole conception of what music means to people “A rockstar is an archetype,” she says, “a persona and image, a kind of performance art created to remind audiences of our own inner wildness, the life of the soul that is greater than day-to-day mundaneness.” To follow that idea even farther, she adds, “I’d say a rockstar is almost shamanic, connecting to the creative source and channeling that energy to the audience… there is a sense of ritual around concerts and festivals. These are the places we go to escape our ordinary lives and participate in a dream of something more magnificent. It’s where we recharge, find community, feel free. And rock¬stars are the conductors of those ceremonies.”Her favorite rockstars of all time? Mark Bolan (1947-1977), the front man of English glam rock group T. Rex, was “the ultimate rock star,” a singer-songwriter, a guitarist and a brilliant poet. Then there’s Alabama-born blues legend Wille Mae “Big Mama” Thorn¬ton (1926-1984), who made “Hound Dog” a hit in 1953, three years before Elvis Presley came out with his version. “And, of course, Ja¬nis Joplin,” (1943-1970), the American singer-songwriter “Queen of Psychedelic Soul.”Her favorite current rockstars? “Britt Daniel of Spoon, out of Austin, Texas, is really incredible,” Alli says. “And Joseph Arthur (from Akron, Ohio) who performed here in the fall, is the most underrated musician cur¬rently, so talented, but never became famous and deserves more acclaim.” ”Favorite Local WNC rock stars? “Oh, Seth Kauffman of Floating Action in Black Mountain. His whole persona, how he appreciates creativity and the type of music he puts out — he’s just terrific. I’m a big fan.”Who do you want to interview but haven’t yet? “That would be Beck,” she says, the American singer-song writer, musician, and producer. “Our careers have taken similar turns — he started music when I started writing. And he doesn’t do a lot of interviews. We’d have a great conversation!”--excerpt from Rapid River Arts & Culture Magazine review, May, 2015 by Marcianne Miller

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Lyrical and deep By Cecil Bothwell While the title of this sweetly thoughtful novel is accurate enough, and the story offers entirely useful instructions for the would-be talker-to, it is misleading. Alli Marshall is a sharp-eyed observer of our interior worlds, our motives, our fears, our loneliness and loves. Her succinct descriptions of place and trajectory echo her long experience as a print reporter, self-edited for brevity and punch. In the telling of this tale about a music reviewer and musicians, a genre and a world that are so often taken up with surfaces, Marshall goes deep. And smart. To coin a phrase, a truly stellar first novel.

By Fred schmitt I've read a variety of Benjamin DeVos' excellent short stories in other publications, so I was curious to see if his poetry would maintain the same high standards. Happy to say it does! DeVos' use of words to develop images and story lines is so good...taking the reader along for a really interesting ride. Among my favorite lines are these gems..."Watch how things grow crooked when there's nothing to eat but each other", "He becomes his own best company in an empty room", and "Too many believe that flying is easy and jump before they're ready".These snippets obviously don't tell the whole story of this collection's excellence. I wholeheartedly recommend "Freaking out the Neighborhood".

With that said, I think that Ben did a really good job bringing Philadelphia to me. The opening piece about the Mayor was crazy, and seemed like an appropriate starting point for a twisted tale through the city. This book was dark, but the bits of light contrasted to grant insight into a place that I don't think many of us think about very often. My favorite piece was The Mailman's Wife, just because it was so heavy, despite being really short. The imagery in this book was incredibly vivid. If I had any complaints, it would only be that I wanted more. This book was a great debut for Ben, and I am super excited to see what he puts out next (I have really enjoyed some of the stories he has written, and would not mind a book of fiction, if possible).

This is a bilingual poetry collection in English (titled *Behind God's Back*) and Spanish. The original poems were written in Hungarian and translated into English by Paul Sohar. Many of the poems relate to the author's tour of the Hungarian diaspora in South America. Sándor Kányádi was born and educated in the Hungarian community of Transylvania, Romania. He garnered every important prize in Romania and Hungary in addition to the prestigious Herter Prize in Vienna. His work has been translated into most European languages, including English: *Dancing Embers*, (selected translations, Twisted Spoon Press, 2002) followed by an enlarged edition *In Contemporary Tense* (Iniquity Press, 2013). The three poets responsible for the Spanish translation first came to know Sándor Kányádi's poetry through English translations. The Hungarian titles are included for Hungarian readers who may want to look up the original text. He is still active, except his reading tours are closer to home now, but he still recites his poems and the Hungarian classics from memory.

The idea is surprising, the result exhilirating. The volume also includes Paul Sohar's English versions, which have a beautiful easy flow to them. And of course Kányádi's poems themselves are lovely, dark, and deep.

Latin America's great poet rendered into English by the world's most celebrated translator of Spanish-language literature.

Sor Juana (1651–1695) was a fiery feminist and a woman ahead of her time. Like Simone de Beauvoir, she was very much a public intellectual. Her contemporaries called her "the Tenth Muse" and "the Phoenix of Mexico," names that continue to resonate. An illegitimate child, self-taught intellectual, and court favorite, she rose to the height of fame as a writer in Mexico City during the Spanish Golden Age.

This volume includes Sor Juana's best-known works: "First Dream," her longest poem and the one that showcases her prodigious intellect and range, and "Response of the Poet to the Very Eminent Sor Filotea de la Cruz," her epistolary feminist defense―evocative of Mary Wollstonecraft and Emily Dickinson―of a woman's right to study and to write. Thirty other works―playful ballads, extraordinary sonnets, intimate poems of love, and a selection from an allegorical play with a distinctive New World flavor―are also included.

Review “Grossman [renders] Sor Juana’s rhythmic gifts in smart and elegant measures.” (Booklist)“Edith Grossman is a marvel. With the greatest artistry she has given vibrant, contemporary voice to Sor Juana, legendary proto-feminist bard of seventeenth-century Mexico, capturing the wit, tenderness, and religious fervor of her work.” (Susan Bernofsky, translator of Kafka’s The Metamorphosis)“Her language is a lesson in speaking to the moment and to the centuries both, and Edith Grossman captures its suggestiveness with a calm elegance.” (Alberto Ríos)“Impressive… This careful book may ignite new attention to Sor Juana in English, for which Grossman will deserve even more praise.” (Publishers Weekly)

About the Author Acclaimed for her best-selling translations of Cervantes, Gabriel García Márquez, and Mario Vargas Llosa, Edith Grossman has received many awards including the PEN/Ralph Manheim Medal for Translation. She lives in New York City.

This is a book – though not in the conventional storytelling sense. It doesn’t tell a tale from beginning to end, it’s more a case of dipping in here and there; sometimes at the beginning, most times somewhere in the middle and occasionally, just occasionally, at the end of the beginning. In fact, you could say it’s a collection of little stories from various times in various lives. In this ‘book’ you will find prose with strategically placed line breaks – which, for the sake of calling a spade a shovel, we will refer to as ‘poetry’. You will also find a collection of words which became sentences which then became a paragraph, or six, this we will call ‘prose’. And then there’s the ‘in-between’ – these are the inner workings, thoughts that are thunk and things you ought not to put words to. I hope you enjoy this collection of words, and if – for some inexplicable reason – you do not, then please send me a poem or piece of prose stating your reasons. ‘Timony Souler

I can't recommend this enough By Jim the Viking This collection of short pieces is simultaneously heartbreakingly beautiful, frighteningly dark, and refreshingly cathartic. Like the best poetry, like the best prose that examines the self, you find yourself caught up in the words and struck by the sudden realization that, although they are personal to the author, they're also entirely applicable to you.I can't recommend this enough.
