A Classic Rekindled By ernest schusky Ray Demallie is a leading expert on the Lakota Sioux, and we are lucky to have him adding his insights to the classic work of Mooney, as he did with Black Elk. The Sixth Grandfather: Black Elk's Teachings Given to John G. NeihardtMooney's work is a reflection of what the Bureau Of American Ethnology should have done more often--put anthropology to practical application. The so-called Sioux 'outbreak' at Wounded Knee was publicized as an uprising threatening settlement of the West. Evenually, the nation recognized that the event had been exaggerated and something like sentiment began to be expressed for America's Indians. Mooney's meticulous report (he worked on it for three years) backed up the growing popular view and, more importantly influenced Washington, so I consider it one of the first applied anthropology projects. Most other BAE reports must be considered ethnographies.Readers will get as a bonus extensive descriptions of other nativistic movements, providing a foundation for study of them as social movements.ernestschusky.com

Price This is supposed to be "the book" regarding the Ghost-dance religion, and it does span quite a long period of history before the Wounded knee massacre in 1890, however it is severely fragmented on kindle, and is from the point of view of the government and whites, not Indians who apparently refused to talk to Mooney during that time in 1890.I wished I had found out earlier, I could have returned it for a refund.

4 of 19 people found the following review helpful. interesting, though not clearly objective By J. Hale Mooney's study is often fascinating, although one has to wonder how objective and disinterested someone can be who refers to his subject as "this pathetic cult."

Not only will it help you understand the disease, but it will also shed light into what that person is dealing with. This book is also perfect for anyone who loves golf. The author is a fantastic golfer who has a lot of great stories to tell. If for no other reason, you should purchase the book to read David Feherty's introduction which details the demons that he has dealt with all his life. By Amy What a great story of hope and the importance of support from family and friends. Mental illness is a TERRIBLE disease but it can be dealt with and managed. Michael is a true testament to this. There is a lot of golf content in this book but do not let that deter you if you are not an avid player. It's well-worth the read, even if you have to buzz over some of the golf detail.

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. Unexpectedly Loved This Book - Quirky, intriguing with a bit of literary mixed in By BumbleB I was looking for Jessica's other books when I found this title in the Kindle Store. I tried the sample and within 2 pages I knew this would be a great read. Events immediately take a turn into the unexpected in the first chapter, and I loved seeing the world through the eyes of the protagonist. She asks herself alot of questions as she moves ahead to a new life and new experiences (I guess I can relate to that). The story isn't written strictly for commercial appeal. In fact this story has more of a literary style than the last 5-8 books I've read. I think the difference is those authors intended to write the next great book that sells (some were really entertaining, but didn't delight me or have intellectual appeal). Seeing Jessica's list of previous publications on her site, it makes sense that she's a writer with a story to unfold (not necessarily to craft for sales).I chose not to reveal what happens in the story to allow it to magically unfold its surprises. I find it interesting that the early reviewers are all from Massachusetts (?!) for some reason. Well, I'm from Montana...but oops!... I grew up in Massachusetts. Makes me wonder what that connection's about, but I think that readers from other places will enjoy this book, too. A whole-hearted five stars.

184 of 184 people found the following review helpful. Take a careful look at the Publisher before your buy "The Works of Rudyard Kipling" By Kiwi There's a reason for many of the negative reviews of the quality of this book. This is because the version of "The Works of Rudyard Kipling" published by General Books LLC is an el cheapo version, created using OCR scanning and an automated scanning device which can miss complete pages. Typos are frequent and there's no table of contents, also, there was absolutely no editing of the book. This is all stated on the publishers web site (google them and read - you'll be as interested as I was when you see all the disclaimers). The owner of General Books LLC (a company called VDM Publishing), is getting more and more notorious for these ripoffs - almost every review of their books (500,000 or so now listed on Amazon) by an actual buyer is negative, many are extremely so. Also watch out for any books published by Alphascript, Betascript, Fastbooks, Books LLC and LLC Books - all imprints of VDM Publishing. Unfortunately, Amazon is currently doing nothing to protect their customers from this Publishers misleading product descriptions. If you have bought a paper version from General Books LLC by mistake, you can return to Amazon within 30 days(but make sure you check Amazon's Return Policy for the details)

36 of 37 people found the following review helpful. iPhoners beware... By Will in Seattle Okay, maybe I shouldn't complain for a dollar, but the table of contents don't work! On the first page is a table of contents that divides the work into non-fiction, novels, short stories. That one works and takes you to the table of contents for those genres. But those sub-ToCs don't work, nor do any of the others (for example, when you get to the Jungle Book, it has a ToC, but it doesn't work)Since there is a lot of stuff here (which is great, for 0.99) it is very, very hard to navigate. I ended up walking around in the document until I found the stories I wanted and then used the 'Mark' function, which you can jump to from the 'Go to' menu. But that's a lot of work. Guess you get what you pay for.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Amazing! By Viviana Goldman This work is amazing! It can't be more beautifully written, and it is so universal and for our current time! Rape and women's abuse and violence is a very present issue in Argentina, where I live, and this work has been recently performed by a Spanish actress in our local theatre. I haven't been able to see this show but this is what made me discover and read the original work by William Shakespare, which I hadn't heard of before.I strongly reccomend The Rape of Lucrece for those who love poetry, subtlety and a smart treatment of current issues.

Thanks to Moldenhauer and the many others who assisted with this work, scholars and general readers now have, at long last, a critical text of Thoreau's beloved nature essays, a text that reproduces as closely as possible Thoreau's authorial intentions."--Laura Dassow Walls, New England Quarterly"We are grateful to Moldenhauer and Princeton University Press for their continuing dedication to providing modern readers with editions of Thoreau's writings that are sound, beautifully-produced and enduring pieces of scholarship in their own right."--François Specq, Transatlantica"Because of Moldenhauer's hard work, we know, in so far as it can be known, that when we read his text, we are reading Thoreau. The text is pure Thoreau, but Moldenhauer deserves a world of credit for making it what it is."--Robert DeMaria, Amherst Magazine"These essays are bound to have a growing impact on American culture. It is a pleasure to have them in this historically informative and scrupulously edited new edition."--David M. Robinson, Thoreau Society Bulletin

'There was an excellent wisdom in him, proper to a rare class of men, which showed him the material world as a means and symbol… he had in a short life exhausted the capabilities of this world; wherever there is knowledge, wherever there is virtue, wherever there is beauty, he will find a home.' —Ralph Waldo Emerson, from his Biographical Sketch

From the Back Cover 'There was an excellent wisdom in him, proper to a rare class of men, which showed him the material world as a means and symbol... he had in a short life exhausted the capabilities of this world; wherever there is knowledge, wherever there is virtue, wherever there is beauty, he will find a home.' Ralph Waldo Emerson, from his Biographical Sketch A selection of ruminative nature writing on walking and the beauty of New England, here Thoreau's characteristically wide-ranging and philosophical style offers a multitude of fascinating observations. Excursions presents Thoreau's most studied and expansive collection of writing on the natural world. An early advocate of conservationism, he discusses here, in mesmerising prose, the complex but essential relationship between man and nature. This edition includes a remarkable Biographical Sketch by Thoreau's great contemporary and mentor Ralph Waldo Emerson. This choice collection of Thoreau's nature writing includes the essays 'The Succession of Forest Trees', 'Walking', and 'Autumnal Tints' - each one an explorative reach into the heart of the natural world. Thoreau's travels through the woods of New England are not only physical journeys through some of the most awe-inspiring landscapes in America but also spiritual excursions of the mind. Henry David Thoreau (1817-1862) was an American author, naturalist, transcendentalist, tax resister, development critic, and philosopher. His many publications include such classics as Walden and Civil Disobedience. Jeffrey S. Cramer is Editor of Walden: A Fully Annotated Edition and I to Myself: An Annotated Selection from the Journal of Henry D. Thoreau, both published by Yale University Press.

For Thoreau fans By Schuyler This is not a book for the first-time or even second-time reader of Thoreau, but for Thoreau fans, especially those familiar with the Princeton University Press edition of the Writings of Henry David Thoreau, the publication of this book is an event. The Princeton series, for those not familiar with it, is the definitive edition of the writings, with exhaustively researched texts and detailed textual introductions and notes, in this case for each of the essays included in this volume. "Excursions" is a welcome addition to the series. There are relatively few notes identifying named individuals and quotations in the text, and for that kind of annotation I would recommend the Library of America edition of the Essays and Poems, another excellent volume.

Dahle I enjoy reading Henry David Thoreau and have a number of his books and articles on my shelves, but since buying a Kindle, I thought it would be nice to have some of his works available on the Kindle, and it is, but I think maybe it's worth it to pay a little bit for a version that has a clickable table of contents and so forth.

Varied Collection By Amazon Customer This is a collection of essays and travelogues written by Thoreau reprinted mainly from journals such as the Atlantic Monthly to which Thoreau was a frequent contributor. The contents are:--A Yankee in Concord--Natural History of Massachusetts--A Walk to Wachusett--The Landlord--A Winter Walk--The Succession of Forest Trees--Walking--Autumnal Tints--Wild Apples--Night and Moonlight--May Days--Days and Nights in ConcordThe first essay is a longish travelogue about a short trip to Quebec City, in which Thoreau describes his experiences during the trip, such as how he traveled, with whom he stayed, and notes on the flora and fauna he encountered along the way. The other essays are more concerned with the observations of Thoreau as a naturalist, while there is often a significant philosophical content as well.Certainly, Thoreau was very observant, and the scientific accuracy of essays such as The Succession of Trees is remarkable, given what was generally known about the topic at the time. On observation, Thoreau writes "Wisdom does not inspect, but behold....We do not learn by inference and deduction and the application of mathematics to philosophy, but by direct intercourse and sympathy." On enjoying the golden colors of the fall, he notes "Wealth indoors may be the inheritance of few, but it is equally distributed on the Common." He instructs "Objects are concealed from our view, not so much because they are out of the course of our visual ray as because we do not bring our minds and eyes to bear on them; for there is no power to see in the eye itself, any more than in any jelly...There is just as much beauty visible to us in the landscape as we are prepared to appreciate,--not a grain more." All in all, this collection of essays is well chosen, and includes many of Thoreau's well-known short works.
