This is another great book by Baroness Emmuska Orczy, the British-Hungarian novelist, creator of dozens of historical novels of the times of the French Revolution in the XVIII Century. She is best remembered for her main character, Sir Percy Blakeney, AKA The Scarlet Pimpernel, who rescued French aristocrats from the French Revolution:

Each story has it's own set of characters and are basically unrelated so you don't have to read them in order. The Baroness has an easy to read style with enough description to create the scene that draws you into the story. I enjoyed each one

Not a mind-blowing story and, of course, it's bathed in olde-timey ideas about love (i.e., you know your true love on sight and fall helplessly in love after only a few words are spoken, etc.) but the "tangled skein" of the story was quite interesting and it was a fun alternate look at English history.

I loved the characters and story, and it kept me on the edge of my seat. The Scarlet Pimpernel is one of my favorite books, and Orczy did not disappoint in this book either.

Bud Simpson By xyztpl This is not just a review of John Ford's "Deer Diaries', I could say exactly the same things about any of the three books he has written! Five star all the way! Interesting, humorous, well written, or any other good cliche. But, these are not cliches when it comes to John's books. They are inadequate at times. Easy to read, factual, a true peek into how the Maine Warden Service operated not too many years ago before political correctness and politics entered the game. Totally enjoyable! All three of his books, that is !!!

I have shared the first two with friends where we now live who don't know John and all enjoyed the emotions of laughter and sadness that came with John's working life as a warden.I think you have to know John to some degree, to fully appreciate, that you are getting the real John Ford in how he speaks in normal conversation as well as his emotions in the wilder and crazy situations. There is no doubt in my mind that as John was writing the drafts of these stories, he was reliving the emotions of the actual events.Of course like any profession, you have to have walked in those shoes to fully appreciate the events and years John, Judy and family look back upon.Although we are both retired from law enforcement from different states, we have known each other over the years and I wish we had the opportunity to have shared similar events.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Life was simpler By George Godding Great read, enjoyed the location descriptions along with the event description. Having been born and raised in Waldo County, but joining the Army and living in Washington State for the past 54years, I was able to really visualize the locations John was describing and it made the book that much more enjoyable. His description of his Warden career makes one realize how much simpler life was in those years as compared to now, when we are supposed to live with"politically correct" decisions. It sounds like hunting in Maine has changed from how I remember it, where I spent hours and hours with my Grandfather and his close friends hunting together, in the woods, not driving around in vehicles, I'm sorry to say, not only a Maine change, but also Washington State and probably everywhere.Well written, good humor, but still a message of changing times well pointed out.

It has innumerable errors, no working Table of Contents, no working footnotes, no reflowable text, etc. (Don't take my work for it. Download the sample.)The exact, same text is easily available elsewhere for free. The current cost of the Kindle version is ridiculous considering the little effort it took to generate and the inconvenience of having to decipher the OCRed mess.Having read the book several times, I believe it to be of sufficient value to have available for reference and reading wherever I may take my Kindle. So if it is worth your time and effort, create your own copy of the book. I am.

With big letters and short 23 lines per page, this number may get divided at least by two to get a feeling of the real length of this book. The author is putting the Bible text of the New Testament into the context of his branch of culture, which is geographically the same as Jesus', while the Christian author was a youth in the 19th century, before he migrated into the US. "Syrian" in 1916 gets a bit lost in time warp translation, in today's world, it would be better termed "The Palestinian Christ". The insight of Abraham Mitrie Rihbany is invaluable in overstanding many text passages of the Bible, the modern Westerner would be lost without. This book has directly influenced the work of Rocco A. Errico (e.g. Let There Be Light: The Seven Keys). We read about the more intense emotional and theatrical state, less inhibitions (both for better and for worse), the holy duty of hospitality, the sin of hording dunza (money), a melancholic view on the good old ways of agriculture and an attempt of a mystical approach to the nonexistence of genders. Which, well, doesn't really live up to non-discriminatory expectations in a modern sense... I was a bit surprised to read the term "Mohammedan" so often, considering that the author used to live this close to a predominantly Muslim society (which doesn't appreciate that term). Overall very recommendable nevertheless and complementary to Errico's books.

A Thoughtful Look at Christ Through the Eyes of a Syrian By Bijsmom This book offers fascinating insight into the culture and thought processes of the people of Jesus' time. For those of us in the West, many things get misinterpreted or misunderstood when we look at the Bible though a 21st Century, western lens. Always good to hear from someone else's perspective and understanding.

A poor boy falls in love with a privileged young woman and learns a bitter lesson about the haves and the have-nots in this dramatic tale from the Pulitzer Prize-winning author of The Late George Apley.

As a young boy, Tom Michael walked with his father, Alfred, along the streets of Michael's Harbor, Massachusetts, and gazed across the water at the stately mansions on Warning Hill. Imagining the lives of the families inside those majestic homes was an enjoyable distraction, a cherished bond between father and son. Years later, after the shocking tragedy of his father's suicide, Tom holds the memory of those walks dear. When he meets and falls in love with Marianne Jellett, daughter of the self-made millionaire Grafton Jellett, he is thrilled to know one of Warning Hill's most prominent families. He is wholly unprepared for the pain that Marianne will cause him and for the discovery of a connection between the ruthless Grafton and his father's death. A mesmerizing tale of passion, power, and vengeance, Warning Hill was the first of John P. Marquand's novels to be set in the stratified New England landscape that defined his legendary career.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. A Quick and Enjoyable Read By Jerry B Schutz Warning Hill is another John P. Marquand novel about wealthy northeastern society. In this book Tom Michael comes from a family whose fortunes have been wasted away by a father who never learned the value of a dollar, nor how to produce more, so he turned to gambling, and when that didn’t work, to suicide to solve all of his problems. Tom fell in love with the girl from Warning Hill, where lived the rich. Her father was a self-made man that wielded the power of his wealth as do so many such people. He became class conscious, despite his own humble beginnings. At the time that Marquand wrote his novels such ‘telling on’ the rich was considered daring. No such attitude exists now, so that any value in reading Marquand lies in how well he told his story, both from the point of view of writing craft and storytelling. Having won a Pulitzer Prize for one of his novels, he was certainly esteemed by his peers, and I personally always enjoy reading his books. I find that he wrote well, and told good stories.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Victorian Socialist Romance By Dharma Enoch Strone is a book-loving rustic loner who lives in a remote hand-built cabin. He works as a mechanical engineer in the industrial town of Gascester. One evening he meets a poor factory girl, Milly, who has been abandoned by her friends during a walk in the woods. On the same day he is accosted by the Reverand Martinghoe who introduces Strone to his beautiful, widowed, wealthy sister Lady Malingcourt. Strone is bewitched by her lovely singing and the seductive manners of the jaded upper class widow. At the urging of the owner of the factory, Strone invents a Miracle Crane, capable of doing the work of hundreds of me. This makes him a rich man, able to pursue his socialist dreams of bettering the working class. Who will he marry? the lovely and lower class Milly or the bequiling and brilliant lady?Writing in 1902, Oppenheim uses Strone to vent pre-war socialist ideologies, lamenting the poverty of the working class, the indifference and greed of the wealthy, and the corrupt politics of the Labour Party. The story hinges on an assumed moral principle which is so absurd and anachronistic that it is difficult to sympathize with the characters. This is truly a Victorian romance."His opening phrases scarcely gave promise of anything of the sort. He was unaccountably nervous, over-anxious to do justice to the cause which was so dear to him, and at the same time horribly aware that he was not succeeding. Suddenly, however, after a somewhat prolonged pause a wave of memory swept in upon him. He remembered what he himself had passed through, the underworld of the great cities was laid before him. It stretched away before him, a ghostly panorama, its wailing rang in his ears, the death cries of its children shook his heart. Then, indeed, he straightened to his task. His speech was stilted no longer, his deep voice shook with passion. These rows of unemotional men, some sorting papers, some whispering, some giving him a laboured attention--they too must see and hear. And they did! It was as though a great canvas were stretched before them, and Strone, with the lightning brush of a great master, was painting with lurid touches a terrible picture, a picture growing every moment in horror, yet from the sight of which there was no escape. "It is like this," he cried, and the wan, starved faces of dead children gleamed pale upon the canvas; "Like this," and loathsome vice and unspeakable disease stalked before them, and shook bony fists, which seemed indeed to move on the canvas and threaten the spell-bound audience. "See!" And countless forms seemed to throng the canvas, an endless and awful perspective of suffering and death-smitten humanity. "Men and women like you and yours, born with an equal right to taste the sweetness of life, ground into the likeness of parasites and criminals by your accursed social laws. Murder is a terrible crime, but it is not only their bodies which you destroy, but their souls. God help those on whose shoulders the burden of these things must rest."There were statistics, a plain statement of the practical measures necessary and a brief but passionate peroration. A thrill went through the House when Strone spoke of himself, only newly come from that world for whose salvation he pleaded. All the sins of the universe, all that was ugly, and vicious, and detestable sprung from that pestilential under-current down which were ever drifting the great stream of lost humanity. Drink was an effect, not a cause. A miserable existence begat despair, despair drink, and drink crime. Let them awake from their indifference, their cynicism, or false philosophies, and strike a mighty blow at the great heart of the hideous monster. Life and freedom were gifts common to all. Those who sought to make them a monopoly for the rich must pass through life to the shadow of death with an appalling burden upon their shoulders. And more than any in the world, those men to whom he then spoke must face this responsibility. So he pleaded, no longer at a loss for words, passionate, forceful, touched for those few minutes at any rate with a spark of that Divine fire which carries words straight to the hearts of men, the gift of true eloquence. When at last, and with a certain abruptness, he resumed his seat, there reigned for several moments a respectful and a marvellous silence. Then a storm of cheering broke the tension, cheering from all parts of the House, led by the Prime Minister, joined in by the leader of the Opposition."
