The world of BDSM is not foreign to me, yet there were so many attitudes and practices I had never come across before. As an older woman myself I have to say Joyce Snyder had a hell of a lot of chutzpah and energy to explore this colorful lifestyle, these outrageous men, and do so with an open mind, a tongue in cheek and no harsh judgment of her screwball slaves and their erotic desires. I would recommend this book to anyone who wants to have their mind blown in a cheerful and humorous way.

By Julie Jewels Congrats to New Yorker Joyce Snyder for changing her dating life so drastically at age 60 and for spending the past five years dating submissive men. She has had her share of experiences and then some--she's gotten her apartment cleaned, her toes polished and plenty of attention lavished on herself. Snyder, a former erotic magazine editor, has a writing style that is sharp-tongues and witty and often the reader finds themselves on the floor with laughter. This is such and extraordinary book both in subject matter and writing style. Only a New Yorker could come up with something so freaky and fresh!

By Peridot Joyce Snyder's fascinating, sometimes horrifying and occasionally arousing inquiry into the world of BDSM* and her potential as a dom in that world—dominatrix—definitely took me far from my personal reality. Joyce is an absolute original, and this partial autobiography is a perfect example of her one-time friendly advice to me regarding writing to a deadline: “just hold your nose and do it! “ Joyce lives her own advice as she introduces us to the real people that she first met while researching BDSM practices for a porn magazine she was asked to revive into profitability. She is merciless in describing herself to the reader, and in immersing herself—and us--into their worlds, particularly the world of the submissive man. To get there she engages in BDSM speed dating, attends conferences and seminars on its practices and tries them herself. Some she likes. Some make the reader gasp with disgust. Some are outrageously funny. Joyce is poised and cool throughout, reporting it all, including the back-stories of the people involved. No real names are used except hers.I gave a copy of the book to a friend who gave it back, saying ‘fetishists can’t have relationships, they objectify.” Late in the book, Joyce’s description of the “Ronin” proves her point. My husband asked, “If we go to Joyce’s for dinner will she have a naked man with a collar serve us?” Hmmm. I’m still glad I read it—she has gone where few women dare, and told the tale.
