By A Customer It has been noted many times that artists are usually not the most pleasant human beings to be around; Maugham's novel is, among other things, a compelling examination of why this is so. The obsessed artist who dominates this book, Charles Strickland (based on the notorious Paul Gauguin), walks away from his cushy middle-class existence in England to pursue his dream to paint, amid frightful poverty, in France. Strickland is an unforgettable character, an inarticulate, brutishly sensual creature, callously indifferent to his fellow man and even his own health, who lives only to record his private visions on canvas.It would be a mistake to read this novel as an inspiring tale of the triumph of the spirit. Strickland is an appalling human being--but the world itself, Maugham seems to say, is a cruel, forbidding place. The author toys with the (strongly Nietzschean) idea that men like Charles Strickland may somehow be closer to the mad pulse of life, and cannot therefore be dismissed as mere egotists. The moralists among us, the book suggests, are simply shrinking violets if not outright hypocrites. It is not a very cheery conception of humanity (and arguably not an accurate one), but the questions Maugham raises are fascinating. Aside from that, he's a wonderful storyteller. This book is a real page turner.

By Mary Whipple When he first meets Charles Strickland, a London stockbroker, the young narrator of this novel thinks of him as "good, honest, dull, and plain." When Strickland suddenly abandons his wife and children and takes off for Paris, however, the narrator decides he is a cad. Though he has had no training, Strickland has decided to become an artist, a drive so strong that he is willing to sacrifice everything toward that end. Anti-social, and feeling no obligation to observe even the smallest social decencies, Strickland becomes increasingly boorish as he practices his art. Eventually, he makes his way to Tahiti, where he "marries," moves to a remote cottage, and spends the rest of his life devoted to his painting.Basing the novel loosely on the life of Paul Gauguin, Maugham creates an involving and often exciting story. His narrator is a writer who feels impelled, after Strickland's death and posthumous success, to set down his memories of his early interactions with Strickland in London and Paris. Because the narrator never saw Strickland after he left Paris, he depends on his meetings with a ship captain and a woman in Papeete for information about Strickland after Strickland's arrival in Tahiti. The ship captain is described as a story-teller who may be spinning tall tales, a constant reminder to the reader that this is fiction, and not a biography of Gauguin.By depicting Strickland as a "dull, plain" man suddenly gripped by an obsession so overwhelming that nothing else matters to him, Maugham involves the reader in his actions, which even the narrator claims not to understand. The least convincing aspect of Strickland's characterization is the narrator's observation that Strickland is completely indifferent to his wife of seventeen years and his children. No confrontation between Strickland and his wife appears, and one wonders if perhaps Maugham found himself unable to depict such an abandonment realistically. The story moves quickly, however, and whatever is sacrificed in the characterization is more than recouped in the plot and its development.Straightforward in its story line, the novel is romantic in its depiction of the artist in the grip of an obsession, his subsequent abandonment of civilization and return to nature, his suffering of a long and terminal illness (during which he paints his masterpiece), and the fate of this creation. Good, old-fashioned story-telling at its best, this uncomplicated story, written in 1919, still has broad appeal. Mary Whipple

The Language of Passion By A Customer Maugham takes a fascinating look into the life of Charles Strickland, a man who gives up his comfortable life as a stock broker, breaks the social contract, abandons his family, and takes up painting. These changes condemn him to a life of poverty and disdain by most who know him. The story is related by an aspiring writer who never seems to be able to quite get the painter to admit he is either remorseful of all the human wreckage he's left in his wake, or so uncomfortable in this new life that he's sorry for having made such a hash of his it. Despite his lack of satisfactory answers, the writer continues to be fascinated by Strickland, who has found a means of expression that transcends language. Strickland understands the writer well enough, having lived in his culture. The writer, on the other hand, cannot possibly understand Strickland, having never been so passionate about anything in his short life. It is this passion that both draws others to Strickland, and causes him to reject outright everything they hold dear. The book raises several intersting questions: Who makes the social contract anyway, and did Strickland knowingly sign on, or was he simply incorporated into it by society? Would it have been acceptable for Strickland to abandon his family to become a priest, missionary, or some other more acceptable form of aesthete? While the book is loosely based on the life of Paul Gaugin, it is really more about W. Somerset Maugham and his search for beauty and truth. In his fictionalized account of that search, Maugham shows us that while the search may be noble, the journey is not necessarily beautiful to everyone, especially those not involved. Strickland's single-minded search is especially ugly to those who at one time meant something to him, as they are informed dispassionately and without malice they mean nothing to the painter except a meal or a small loan. As he draws ever nearer his language of painting, Strickland gradually sheds even these occasional interactions, to a point where even his very life has no meaning except in the context of his art. This book is a must-read for anyone contemplating a life in the arts. While Strickland is a thoroughly dislikable character, he is one without artifice, totally lacking the ability to say anything other than what is true to him. He is a man consumed by his passion, completely lacking the need for approval. Maugham as usual creates a work that is both powerful and thought-provoking. "Moon and Sixpence" satisfys on at least two levels; as a cracking good story, and as a philosophical treatise on art, beauty and passion.

They initiated David Ring's career as an international speaker, simply by helping to fill a small high school auditorium with people ready to hear his story. How did David Ring, a boy who lived every day with the debilitating affects of cerebral palsy, arrive at this point? Well, you'll need to read The Boy Born Dead, published by Baker Books and written by David Ring with John Driver and David Wideman, to find out.Although you may not guess it from the first few pages of David Ring's story, this book was definitely not a light and carefree read, nor an easy story to watch unfold. It was, however, powerful. The story's chapters jumped back and forth from the time of David's childhood to the time of his teenage years. However, none of it was revealed through David Ring's perspective, but rather from that of his best friend, David Wideman. Although this may be an unusual technique for a biography, it provided an appealing voice and interesting outside-looking-in perspective that would have otherwise been lost.This book was a roller coaster of emotions, from heartbreaking to hope-filled. At times, the descriptions of the horrible abuse David Ring suffered were almost too much. They bothered me a great deal, and I considered closing the book permanently. Then a scene of faith and hope would come along, and I would be convinced to continue reading. 4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. Inspiring!! By Rachel Dodson Such an amazing story! I first heard David speak when I was a young teenager and I was overwhelmed by his story. Reading this book has only fueled my interest. This book is through the eyes somewhat of his friend David Wideman. They met each other in 1968 and through many different events became lifelong friends. As I said before David's story is not new to me but, this book brought to life a lot of things I didn't know about him. Him losing his parents at such a young age and being abused are just a couple of the things he went through as a young teenager. His story has touched my heart yet again. I found myself tearing up at several points of the book, just from the sheer volume of emotional distress he seemed to be in at any given time. I enjoyed seeing this story through the eyes of his friend because it gives a different perspective on his life. We also see how his friend learns form his story as well.This book actually reads more like a novel than the biography/non-fiction book that it is. I actually found that to be quite a refreshing writing style. I am not saying that to say that it seems fictional, I am simply saying that the co-writer of this book does well in writing the chapters of the book to make them seem as if you are watching a movie or play. Reading this book has blessed my heart and I highly recommend it.I was blessed with this book by Baker Publishing in exchange for my review. A positive review was not required.

Barriga I am the type of person that has complained about some of the most trivial things in my life which is a total waste of time I know. And after reading the amazing story of The Boy Born Dead: A Story of Friendship, Courage, and Triumph by David Ring, John Driver, and David Wideman I think I need to change my viewpoints. Life can be extremely harsh for some of us while others make it seem harsh. I know I am the latter which is pathetic when I think about it as I write this review. The extreme way David Wideman began life and subsequently endured following his birth is remarkable. I devoured each and every single page and can only hope that his lifes story be made into a movie down the road. I cannot believe he battled through so much dark to make out into the light and be the beacon of inspiration that he is today to so many individuals. Many people would have easily quit life early on, but through his strength he made it through and we now have one of the most insprining stories to read. This is a book that must be read. I received a copy for this review from Baker Books and all opinions are my own.

The title says it all, David Ring was born dead, he was pushed over to the side while they tried to stabilize his mother. He laid there without oxygen for 18 minutes. It's a true miracle that he survived, the doctor didn't give him much hope, but his mother knew that if survived laying there dead he was going to make it.It was suggested more than once that David should be made a ward of the state so he would be institutionalized. But his mother wouldn't have any part of it. She was an extremely strong woman and she took care of David the best way she could. She tried to get help for him as far as his education was concerned, but his cognitive skills were great, he suffered physically. He walked in a slow shuffling gate and had a hard time with his hand coordination. David was too smart for the special ed classes but had a hard time in the regular classes because he was extremely slow in writing and getting his assignments done. The other children were cruel and he as bullied so badly that he hated school. Even some of teachers were just awful, they were impatient with him and made it almost unbearable on him.His mother neglected her own health, she knew she was sick and by the time she sought treatment it was too late. She passed away and left David in the care of his oldest sister. Things were not working out so they just passed him around amongst themselves until finally his youngest sister's family took him in they had him living in a dark basement in an abusive situation. He wouldn't speak to anyone after his mother passed away, he just withdrew, he was so depressed and often thought of suicide.The first day he went to school in Liberty Arkansas, his sister and her husband dropped him off at the bus stop. He caused quite a stir when the other students notice him all hunched over and shuffling the bus stop. There were a few comments made within the students that were waiting and one of the town bullies decides to have some fun with him. So he pushes him and knocks his books out of his arms. John Driver, the preacher's son who never rides the bus was there because his dad had an early meeting and didn't have time to drop him off at school. John wasn't going to stand for this helpless boy being bullied so he takes the bully on himself knowing he will get the bad end of the deal. When he returns home from school that afternoon, his father is waiting for him on the front porch, this isn't a good sign. David's sister witnessed the fight and stopped by the church to tell John's father what an honorable thing John did for standing up for her brother. She also explained the details of David's situation. John's father shares what she told him and suggests that John visits David the following Saturday. John reluctantly agrees.Needless to say, the first visit didn't go very well. John wasn't going to hang around this dark basement while this boy lay on the bed not even looking at him. So he starts to leave. David says his first words to John and he stays. This friendship got off to a rocky start. John enlisted help from his two best friends, but it still wasn't helping David. David could be verbally abrasive and push people away. But John still stuck by him, he knew that it was the right thing to do.After a life changing event, David's life changed for the better. He finally felt the love that thought he would never have since his mother passed away. John's family took him in as their own and he felt they were his family. This is such a beautiful testimony, it's will make you cry, laugh and touch your heart in ways you can't imagine. It's a story of heartbreak, love, faith and true friendship.This story is told by John Driver, it's well written and the story itself is just beautiful. This is one of those books that can't help but make you feel loved.

Collection of poems By ellison Written in two section the first is about social issues such as treatment of parents, the ol' days, and supporting the troops. The second section is about love. Insightful and touching.They are poems/songs. Recommended.

Great Read By Amazon Customer I have been privileged to have read this book of poetry and it speaks to the simplest of puppy love to the deepest love the God can give one person for another. Good not great By Toni Lamen When speaking of true love I certainly would not have said that love has flaws and then said that God is love...this implies that God has flaws although I'm sure the author did not intend this. Overall it was very simple writing and was good but not great

7 of 8 people found the following review helpful. Symbolism in Need of an Image By Rod Zinkel The book is 60% poetry and 40% notes by Yeats, so it is a mix of verse and prose. It may be better to start with the notes as Yeats explains the Irish mythology he draws on and the symbols he uses. In the poetry Yeats repeats certain images too much, so that it seems repetitive. These images, already established as symbols, (e.g. the rose, dreams, sleep, the wind, hair), become rather ineffective as they immediately prompt symbolic or abstract thought. I no sooner read the image then question what it means. Poetry engages the reader first by its literal meaning, there is vitality in original imagery, which is lacking here. The one poem in this collection that does engage is "Aedh Tells of the Rose in His Heart," which I would rank as the best poem in the book. I also found "Valley of the Black Pig" interesting as Yeats writes of the mythological more than folklore, which is the subject and style of the other poems.

They start with his later poems and work their way backward and I assume find that it becomes more intellectually or culturally challenging as the read his earliest works. In this collection, Yeats demands that the reader acquaints himself with Celtic lore and symbolism and if the reader does not, than this collection will be an infuriating experience.For the modern young reader who may be fascinated by mysticism, magical realism, cultures outside the classical European experience, he may find that acquainting himself with Celtic history before he reads the collection will be most a rewarding manner to approach this collection.Remember there were several decades between this collection and "Sailing To Byzantium."
