It painted a rich picture of the lives of of Luce and her brother in Zambia from their lives in the suburbs to poverty and the harsh reality of the street. It takes the reader on an amazing ride touching on religious fanaticism, child smuggling and even magic. The plight of these children made me want to reach through the pages and comfort them. Although fiction and not a memoir it reminded me of Angela's Ashes and has to be one of the best books I've read in years.

This is a beautifully crafted tale, embedded in intrigue and mystery. It also carries an agenda: it exposes a plot of the modern day evil of the sale of body parts through the exploitation of complex third world conditions. The author, whose original home was Zambia evokes the magical ambience of this part of Southern Africa.The story builds up gradually as the young heroic Luse relates how she and her brother Joshua were kidnapped by an evil gang of Zambian officials and Chinese accomplices led by a charismatic evil priestess. Brainwashed by the priestess' apocalyptic Christianity hundreds of orphaned children are swept up from the streets and end up in a secret medical compound where ghastly operations to remove body organs are performed. The wicked band of wrongdoers are rooted in a mishmash of radical Christianity and African myth. This is the backdrop to the evil happenings. By sheer determination and intuitive knowledge Luse escapes and finds her way to the good and ethical Dr Georgia Shapiro and her friends, who are determined to fight the evil and bring the wrongdoers to justice.Tanvi Bush has created a delightful work, rich in description and atmosphere. Langfeld's theory of "inner mimicry" inspires KINETIC KALEIDOSCOPE: EXPLORING MOVEMENT AND ENERGY IN VISUAL ARTS By Gail Herman Herbert Sidney Langfeld's contribution to aesthetics was quite revolutionary in 1920 when he published his book THE AESTHETIC ATITUDE. To say that viewers of artworks could have kinesthetic reactions as well as visual perceptions was a new theory. I use his concept of "motor attitudes" and "motor responses" to give students in-depth experiences when viewing artworks. Langfeld discusses 'Einfuhlung' which is a German word he says is difficult to translate. You can think of it as "feeling into the artwork." The closest word to 'einfuhlung' in English might be 'empathy.' His work so inspired me that I developed a system of viewing artworks by using motor responses to sense their energy. I call the system "kinetic energy in the arts" and this theory using Langfeld's idea of "inner mimicry" is published (2001) in KINETIC KALEIDOSCOPE: EXPLORING MOVEMENT AND ENERGY IN THE VISUAL ARTS. 14 of 14 people found the following review helpful. This book has made a Jack London fan out of me. By R. Beach This is a fascinating, fast-paced story about Man just before he became Man. I loved being taken back to our origins by the totally plausible "time-machine" of genetic memory as presented by Jack London. The story literally shows us the stuff our dreams and we ourselves are made of. This is the first Jack London I've ever read and I'm looking forward to more. I somehow missed having to read Call of the Wild in my school days. I find the style crisp and concrete, and the "far out" premise of the story very believable. I would recommend this to any thoughtful junior high school student and to all adults.

12 of 12 people found the following review helpful. Very unusual, very interesting By Tom Bruce I have never read a book quite like Jack London's "Before Adam." It would be interesting to learn what his target audience for this book was -- young teens, high school students, adults? In it, London sets the premise for the reason of common dreams we all have, such as the dream of falling through space. He attests that it comes from our pre-man existence when we lived and slept in trees and falling meant almost sure death. He takes this theory a giant step forward through the narrator of the book who claims he has pre-historic dreams in which he sees himself as a pre-historic tree and cave dweller named Big Tooth. He creates a fascinating world for Big Tooth to inhabit, and delves into early evolution and survival of the fittest. There are a few holes in his logic, but mostly the story holds together well with several exciting chase sequences. The world of Big Tooth is horrifying, and I think for young teens who are susceptible, it could induce additional nightmares beyond falling. There are dramatic scenes of killing, torture, wife beating, and mass exterminations which are quite explicit. I'm glad I read it, for the book has given me much to think about.

Survival By Greg Hughes I only started reading Jack London's work three years ago, but I've had an interest in prehistoric times and evolution since I was ten. When I tried explaining to other children that humans and apes may have evolved from a common ancestor they just sort of sneered in disbelief. This was over a hundred years after Charles Darwin had died.Jack London's first SF novel "Before Adam" is an imaginitive, compelling read. Through his dreams, a twentieth century man "remembers" events from another time and place - a life lived at the dawn of time. The narrator "Big-Tooth" shows us the harsh brutality of prehistoric life, the endless struggle to survive, the constant danger posed by predators looking for food, and the menace of the "Fire Men" - a race more advanced than the species Big-Tooth belongs to, a race that have learned to use fire and kill prey with bows and arrows. It's very rare for anyone to live beyond middle age. Most people die violent deaths, either at the hands of a rival, or satisfying the hunger of a beast.This is not the first story with a prehistoric setting (Jack London was apparently accused of plagiarism by another author, Stanley Waterloo), but it's a wonderful book nevertheless. London later wrote a book with a similar premise called "The Star Rover", in which a condemned prisoner puts himself into a trance and experiences his past lives. It's possible that J.G. Ballard had also read "Before Adam" before writing "The Drowned World", another book about race memory and the retreat into prehistory. There's a lot of psychology in it.As a species we've certainly come a long way, or so we like to think. The slaughter initiated by the Fire Men looking for living space has been repeated time and time again. Our "intelligence" has enabled us to come up with more ingenious ways to kill each other, moving from bows and arrows to guns to weapons of mass destruction. From what can be seen on television or read in newspapers, it seems we're still a long way from "growing up". Jack London's novel should teach us not to be complacent.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. What made Mary contrary? By Kathleen Vincenz Mary was contrary because she didn't want to marry someone she did not love for money. Yep. That's what will make you contrary in 1914. Mary also didn't want her aunt to care for her--she wanted to be independent and marry a man whose dreams she could share in.I actually read this twice because I liked it so much the first time. The second time paled a bit, but that should be expected, after all it wasn't that great the first time. I liked Mary and I liked her romantic interest, Roger. I thought Roger a bit wimpy but again I am judging him from modern standards--we are not as scandalized by things as they were in 1914, which is for better or perhaps for ill.The book goes in ways that you don't expect and has a strong subplot about Mary's brother, reflecting on strength of character and how you can love someone despite their flaws. It also has a good cast of characters surrounding Mary, one with a Svengali relationship with an artist, asking the question can you be formed by how you act or dress?Really, this book has a lot to offer about everything: feminism, love, family, and virtue. It may be belittled as a romance, but it is as good a treatise on how to live your life as any boring philosophy book, with the added attraction of a mysterious young man renting the tower room. Who can he be?

The acquittal was a shock not only to Anwar—who expected to go to jail—but to most international observers who were convinced he would be found guilty.This book recounts both the first sodomy episode (1998-2004) and the Sodomy II trial (2008–2012). It then takes up the story after the acquittal, describing the events that led to the Malaysian Court of Appeal overturning the ruling in March 2014—convicting Anwar of the charge and sentencing him to five years’ imprisonment—the final appeal against the conviction in the Federal Court of Malaysia In October 2014, and the guilty verdict that was finally delivered on 10 February 2015. Anwar is now in prison serving a five-year sentence. The 2014 conviction ruled him out of contesting a by-election for the parliamentary state seat of Kajang and plans to become the chief minister of Selangor. At the same time his lawyer, Karpal Singh, was convicted of sedition, which disqualified him from parliament. Together, these events were seen as an attack on the key leaders of the opposition parties.

Brilliant and objective write up on the sodomy trial of Anwar Ibrahim By RobBuyer This is a splendid objectively written book by Mark Trowell that highlights the recent sodomy trials of Anwar Ibrahim, Malaysia's current opposition leader and former deputy Prime Minister. It reveals the inconsistencies of the prosecution and the pliant judiciary in sentencing Anwar to 5 years of confinement based on flimsy evidence gathering and illogicalities. It is a sad indictment of what the Malaysian judiciary has become, a tool of the ruling Barisan National party to suppress any semblance of opposition to its rule. What was not clear to me was how can a ruling of sodomy be applied when there was no proof of anal intercourse; questionable semen introduced into someone's rectum is not a proof.
