In this play, three young men wake up in an isolated house on the edge of the city. Outside is a heavy snowfall; inside, the men gradually come to realize they have no food, no heat, and the pipes are frozen. Not only are they snowbound but all the doors of the house are locked and can't be broken down. Part psychological thriller, part ghost story, this is a modern tale, full of tension and mystery. It questions contemporary Ireland and the current lost generation of young men who find themselves trapped by the expectations of society, family, women, and self.

5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. "Things never changed since the Time of the Gods: The flowing of water, the Way of Love." By Crazy Fox As of 1897, Lafcadio Hearn had already published several books eloquently introducing Japan to the English-reading world, capturing an unfamiliar glimpse of the country and its culture at a critical juncture during the Meiji years in the process. What was there left to glean? A rich harvest, in fact. "Gleanings in Buddha-Fields" is an elegant and evocative and yet imminently informative collection of diaphanously linked essays. The variety of Hearn's points of focus flow with a peculiar rhythm all his own--literature, travelogue, folklore, or the oxygen-thin heights of Buddhist philosophy--but the undertow remains his abiding interest in Japanese religion and spirituality in its many differing manifestations. From themes of karma and rebirth in contemporary love poetry and working songs to heady explications of Nirvana and Emptiness, from the old cultural capital of Kyoto to the bustling commercial center of Osaka, Hearn unfolds this topic delicately in a seemingly rambling roundabout manner in rich (sometimes just a bit overly so) language crafted to entertain, inspire, and perhaps even enlighten. Many works written about Japan by Westerners in Hearn's time hold interest nowadays merely as historical fossils of cultural interaction and tend to be embarrassingly unreliable, something not true of Hearn and his work here, combining as it does a scholarly knowledge unusual in his day, a keenly discerning eye just as rare today, and most of all a genuinely deep and abiding regard for the nation he ended up adopting as his own.

Zack Bonnie was fourteen when his parents sent him to a "Troubled Teen" facility. The author takes readers there, in a thrilling psychological read. Sequestered where bizarre cult-like techniques become the norm, see for yourself exactly what the controversy is about. Should we mold a child's behavior using the tools of brainwashing? With coarse, brutal dialog and authentic source materials, this nonfiction memoir, the first in a series, exposes the secrets and tells it all. Dead, Insane, or in Jail: A CEDU Memoir is named for the range of options open to the author at 14, if he ran away from the cult his parents inadvertently inducted him into. This is the first time he has told his story. And it’s a doozy. Too many people can relate to this account, unfortunately. Although Rocky Mountain Academy has closed its doors, several hundred residential teen-treatment programs, religious reeducation camps, and places that commit spiritual assassination still operate without oversight in the United States. Imagine (or remember) being a confused teenager. Now imagine that the only solution your parents can devise is sending you away to be “fixed.” Zack’s touching, true account of being trapped in the “scared straight” industry just might be the book your reluctant teenage reader has been seeking. Barbara J. Danis Literacy Specialist / Coach Zack Bonnie’s work is a gift to those interested in the history and dynamics of coercive residential teen-treatment programs. With gut-level insight, humor and frankness, he describes the inner experience of a precocious 14 year-old who was engulfed and overwhelmed by these bizarre, yet legal, forms of psychological abuse. Marcus Chatfield, Author, Institutionalized Persuasion It is sad the abuse of teenagers to tough love programs by mis-informed parents and politicians did not end with the revelations concerning the concept originator Synanon. To be stopped eventually, stories like this must keep being told. Paul Morantz, Esq. Author, Escape: My Life Long War Against Cults It’s often hard to describe how traumatic and damaging “troubled teen” programs for young people are. This important perspective from someone who lived it offers a vivid portrait of hell that is sold as therapy. Maia Szalavitz Author, Help At Any Cost: How the Troubled-Teen Industry Cons Parents and Hurts Kids In the tradition of Darkness At Noon, Zack’s history puts the reader into the life that too many “survivors” experienced, and he does this in a finely crafted page-turner. Philip Elberg, Esq. Zack Bonnie’s memoir is a riveting tale of shame, intimidation, coercion, and frank abuse in the name of “treatment.” The continued existence of programs like CEDU should be considered a national disgrace. Christopher Bellonci, MD Zack Bonnie’s book sheds light on the larger concerns of many families, then and now. Well-meaning parents are vulnerable to programs like Rocky Mountain Academy. Although it was closed years ago, many more such facilities have been established. These schools and programs take good money from families, and harm their children, all the while masquerading as therapy programs. I join Zack in advocating for regulation and reform so that facilities like RMA can no longer manipulate and harm entire families. Robin C Bernhard, LCSW, MEd, BCN Thank you, Zack. Your book succeeds on so many levels – as autobiography, as social criticism, as just a good story – I hope you make a million dollars. John Bodine, Rocky Mountain Academy Alumnus

Dead, Insane, or in Jail: A CEDU Memoir, by Zack Bonnie

About the Author Zack is taking on the world of the Troubled Teen Industry. In this, the first book in a series, Zack takes readers into the inner workings of the facility where he lived, and the impact the school had on his hyper-stimulated young mind. Sudden incarceration at age fourteen at a weird "emotional growth" facility for troubled teens in Northern Idaho, is in this expository description. Zack Bonnie's has fast-moving, plot-driven memoir, with vivid characters and telling details, where even simple English words take on sinister meanings. With the publication of his book, Mr. Bonnie is becoming an advocate for change in the Troubled Teen industry, and hopes to help kids and their families find alternatives to facilities like the one he describes in his memoir.

I promise you that once you start reading this you will either not want to put it down, but have to, or want to put it down but won't be able to. Intense, honest...insane. incredibly well written. You feel like you are there...again, or for the first time.

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. Well done Zach By Angie As a fellow survivor of an abusive treatment program (WWASPS) I was deeply moved by this stunning work. Zach takes us back, over 28 years ago, as he describes in incredible detail his experiences in being the victim of CEDU and SUWS. For anyone remotely interested in the dark underbelly of institutional psychiatry and the horrors of the troubled teen industry, I highly recommend this book. Parents, educational consultants, fellow survivors, therapists, and regular people with consciences need to read this and understand the incredibly traumatic effects these programs have on young people.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Intense, disturbing and a must read! By margaret turner The story line of this compelling memoir inspired me to write a review. The author adeptly peels away layers and layers of secret spiritual abuse often witnessed in the same manner in which cults are shaped. As disturbing and distressing as it is to read, it is a daring and courageous move by the author to expose many harmful practices still permitted to be applied, under the guise of treatment today. As a sociologist who had heard of ritualistic attack therapies, I thought I knew what I was getting into when opening this book. I am reviewing it because I was inspired by the encompassing messages embedded in Mr. Bonnie's memoir. I learned what goes on behind closed doors revealing untold human rights violations for children. I encourage all those interested in changing the trajectory of prisons for profit to read this powerful book. Institutions like CEDU must have regulatory eyes over their shoulders at all times or be shut down completely.Margaret Turner, Ph.D.

This collection of poetry explores the concept of time and how it affects people in different ways. Humans are always caught somewhere between the memories of yesterday, the moments of now, and the wonders of tomorrow. This is how they were born to live; bound in the reigns of a little thing called time.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Reads like a draft with much room to improve. By Josh Dale I don't believe the Kindle version varies from paper but there is plenty of white space. Enough to elaborate more on potentially riveting memoirs. Normally, the shorter the work, the more impactful each word (and even punctuation) becomes, and there is just not much of that here. Simply put, I couldn't find much depth in this poetry chapbook.

Michael, Brother of Jerry, by Jack London

About the Author Jack London (1876-1916), an American novelist and short-story writer whose works deal romantically with elemental struggles for survival. At his peak, he was the highest paid and the most popular of all living writers. Because of early financial difficulties, he was largely self educated past grammar school.

London draws heavily on his life experiences in his writing. He spent time in the Klondike during the Gold Rush and at various times was an oyster pirate, a seaman, a sealer, and a hobo. His first work was published in 1898. From there he went on to write such American classics as Call of the Wild, Sea Wolf, and White Fang.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Not for the faint of heart By Mokadi Jook This is a wonderful book, as is its prequel, Jerry of the Islands. It's a great dog story. But be warned, if a child is to read this book it should be under the guidance of an adult prepared to explain the extremely racist characters and situations. The story is no fluffy puppy story. It is exciting, the locations exotic, but some of the situations are brutal - it's a Jack London story after all, and the 'N' word appears at least a million times. Still, I'm not one for censorship, and it is a great opportunity to talk about just what happened to people of color, how they were treated, and why they might be justifiably angry about it.

Morscher I happened across this book while looking for stories about Irish Terriers. I wouldn't normally read Jack London; his stories always seemed more to my brother's liking. However, this book quickly grabbed me because a lot of it is written from the dog's perspective. And those passages are spot on. Michael reminded me so much of my own Irish Terrier and how he thinks and reasons. It really got to my heart. When I finished reading, I made a donation to the ASPCA. And although I don't know much about Jack London, I'd bet he had an Irish Terrier himself, for sure.

A must for Irish Terrier owners.Caution, this is London's expose of the brutal training methods used by the trainers for the animal acts of the time. Half the book is descriptions of the typical abuses, some suffered by Michael, some by the animals around him. This was London's last book and he was sick, tired and depressed during this time of his life. It's not among his best but it is powerful stuff, as is all of London's writing.
