Michael, Brother of Jerry, by Jack London

About the Author Jack London (1876-1916), an American novelist and short-story writer whose works deal romantically with elemental struggles for survival. At his peak, he was the highest paid and the most popular of all living writers. Because of early financial difficulties, he was largely self educated past grammar school.

London draws heavily on his life experiences in his writing. He spent time in the Klondike during the Gold Rush and at various times was an oyster pirate, a seaman, a sealer, and a hobo. His first work was published in 1898. From there he went on to write such American classics as Call of the Wild, Sea Wolf, and White Fang.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Not for the faint of heart By Mokadi Jook This is a wonderful book, as is its prequel, Jerry of the Islands. It's a great dog story. But be warned, if a child is to read this book it should be under the guidance of an adult prepared to explain the extremely racist characters and situations. The story is no fluffy puppy story. It is exciting, the locations exotic, but some of the situations are brutal - it's a Jack London story after all, and the 'N' word appears at least a million times. Still, I'm not one for censorship, and it is a great opportunity to talk about just what happened to people of color, how they were treated, and why they might be justifiably angry about it.

Morscher I happened across this book while looking for stories about Irish Terriers. I wouldn't normally read Jack London; his stories always seemed more to my brother's liking. However, this book quickly grabbed me because a lot of it is written from the dog's perspective. And those passages are spot on. Michael reminded me so much of my own Irish Terrier and how he thinks and reasons. It really got to my heart. When I finished reading, I made a donation to the ASPCA. And although I don't know much about Jack London, I'd bet he had an Irish Terrier himself, for sure.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Not as good as "Jerry" but a treat for Dog Lovers and London Fans By John A. Lefcourte Less engaging than "Jerry of the Islands" but a good read. A must for Irish Terrier owners.Caution, this is London's expose of the brutal training methods used by the trainers for the animal acts of the time. Half the book is descriptions of the typical abuses, some suffered by Michael, some by the animals around him.This was London's last book and he was sick, tired and depressed during this time of his life. It's not among his best but it is powerful stuff, as is all of London's writing.

I then sat down intending to spend just a few minutes reading a chapter or two. Before I realized it, I had read the entire book! Lance writes in a very clear, simple, and personal style. In a very straightforward manner, Lance tells the story of his journey of faith, as he seeks to find spiritual truth and salvation in a world filled with religious confusion, until he finally meets someone who will simply sit down and study with him straight from the Bible. As you read his story, it seems to draw you into his world, as though his experiences are your experiences. If you are someone who is on a similar journey, looking for spiritual answers, then I strongly encourage you to read this book!

He went from group to group, sometimes believing, sometimes doubting, and always questioning what he saw. He kept going back to the Bible to weigh the truth in the beliefs.This made me stop and question my beliefs enough to "look it up" and either confirm or question. Lots of room for discussion, questioning and study. The author was not the only one "transformed".

His passion for God's word is so inspiring. He wrote this book so that anyone can read it and understand. So simple, yet the journey of his life so far is complex. Don't miss "Break Out: A Criminal's Journey to Eternal Freedom" By Donna Collins Tinsley My newest book review: "Break Out: A Criminal's Journey to Eternal Freedom"I was familiar with some of Jed's story before I read the book, having walked the streets of Daytona with him when his ministry sponsored Motel Church a few years ago. But I especially loved how the story ended in "Break Out: A Criminal's Journey to Eternal Freedom" by Jed G. Lindstrom and Larry J Leech II. One of the most beautiful and profound statements he made in the book was this: “I know every precious life is immeasurably valuable. The addict in a mansion and the broken soul under a bridge are comparable in the eyes of God. He has no favorites. God loves us all too much for us to be thrown away by any other person. What man throws away God raise up to a living testimony of His power and love.”Someone once said to me when I told them about Jed and Lets Go Ministry, “His story is just like the story of hundreds of addicts.” I didn’t have a good answer for them then, but now after reading the book, I do. I say Jed and the power of the Holy Spirit working in this man’s life makes his story shine. And isn’t that what this world with the darkness and pain that is all around us needs? A shining light to help lead us?Another person that met Jed said “I knew I wanted to get to know this man because something was shining from him.” I recently learned that when he first came into our town he made sandwiches and gave them out to the poor. We all go through difficult times and challenges where it can feel like we are alone but once you accept Jesus as your Saviour you will never feel alone again. Reading Jed's story reminds us to never give up on anyone no matter how bad the situation is. Jed's tragic beginning will bring you to tears but the transformation of his life will inspire you. This book is a wonderful gift to give to everyone you know!

This book reveals the greatest love of all and the truth that He is always seeking us out to redeem us from that which is destroying us. Jesus is real and Jed is one of many who are a witness to that awesome truth. You will not be able to put this book down!

In The Egoist, his comic masterpiece, George Meredith takes the traditional marriage plot of English domestic fiction and turns it on its head. The novel describes the repeated and disastrous courtships of Sir Willoughby Patterne, the egoist of the title. Three women become engaged to Sir Willoughby, but, despite his aristocratic arrogance and the manipulative power of his wealth, each is finally able to see him more clearly than he sees himself.

The introduction to this edition provides context for the novel from Meredith’s own life, his theory of comedy, and his understanding of Darwinian thought. The appendices include reviews, other writing on comedy, and historical documents on women, sexual politics, and the theory of evolution.

A long, painful yet amusing, instructive story of the resistance of his fiance, who was somewhat coerced to the engagement, at the end of which the egoist lets her go and everyone is happier, even the egoist who preserves his lordliness by losing gracefully.
